digital catalogue
Topic Records is probably the oldest independent record label in the world. The label has released ‘classic definitive folk music’ since its foundation in 1939. Topic has always had the underlying philosophy of making traditional-based music as widely available as possible. The aim of the label is now to make as much as possible of our vast historical catalogue available using digital distribution. One of the limitations of the digital distribution of music has been that the contextual notes, lyrics, photographs and sometimes the jokes – all of the the elements that make up a physical record package – are being lost. January 2013 sees us embark upon an innovative and ambitious project to rectify this. Initially we will make 84 archive albums available for digital download. Each album will have a newlydesigned digital booklet including all of the sleevenotes, artwork and photographs that were part of the original LP package. Wherever possible we will also add extra photographs and material from our vaults. Each month throughout the year we plan to release another ten archive titles, each with their own digital booklet. We will also begin a programme of publish also a programme of adding digital booklets to our current catalogue - in February we will publish digital booklets for each of the WATERSON:CARTHY albums. By the end of 2013, there should be about 200 historical albums available for download with digital booklets, plus booklets for over 100 currently available albums. Over the next few pages, you will see examples of the new booklet content and links to our website for each title.
