WE LOVE FASHION Love ’90s purism? Into the ’70s? Girly to the end? The great thing about fashion at the moment is that you can do it all. You can be it all. As our main Alice & Theo shoot - You Are - proves, this season’s trends aren’t just about clothes, it’s a whole state of mind. There’s never been a better time to try on something new. Have you got your flares yet? When you read Vogue’s Julia Hobbs’ love letter to the 1970’s most famous fashion export you’ll be rushing to get your hands on a pair. The flower power decade is having a moment in general - look no further than our ‘Bad Girlfriend’ trend for fun-to-wear folk prints and rock girl leathers. From LA, we have writer Phoebe Lovatt talking up the (very West Coast) Clean Living trend while from New York, Leandra ‘Manrepeller’ Medine riffs on the notion of the fashion rebel (she is). Here in London, Susie Lau and NEWGEN designer Molly Goddard talk girly, and why adopting pretty is a pretty smart move. Enjoy! RET URN OF WO R D S J U L I A H O B B S
Vogue writer Julia Hobbs gets nostalgic about her enduring love for flares and shows us how to wear them this time around It’s 1999 and my early teenage self is sitting cross-legged on the floor of a best friend’s bedroom, Mariah Carey’s Heartbreaker is blaring from a plastic stereo. Armed with kitchen scissors and a cheese grater we’re poised to hack the waistband off our brand new Madchester-style bellbottoms (I’d avoid trying this at home for risk of massacring — aka ‘customising’ — a decent pair of jeans, rather than personal safety per se). Priorities: first, that we should look identical; second, to expose a sizeable stretch of sub-navel midriff; and lastly, to conceal a decent height heel. Together we stomped our way through that summer, channelling the sugary psych-pop vibe of Crazy Town’s Butterfly video and sharing in the wonderful inaugural illusion of endlessly long legs. Fast forward to 2015 and, yes, I’m back listening to psych pop, thanks Connan Mockasin, but it was the thrill of dressing my way towards a sinuous figure that stuck and, subject to a few key concessions, I’ve embarked on a lifelong love affair with the funkish trouser. Sure, there are still days to keep it simple with a spray-on skinny, but there’s something indisputably soulful about the easy-going slinkiness of a kick flare. Rather than whittling your silhouette down to an androgynous straight line, the exaggerated curves of the Almost Famous cut offer fresh appeal this season. Take the new wave of girl crushes cutting loose: the perennially make-up free Camille Rowe riffs on Runaways’ frontwoman Cherie Currie’s glam rock look, collecting faded blue bootcuts to wear
with skin-tight tees and brown suede boots, while Selena Gomez and Karlie Kloss have put the model-off-duty uniform of drainpipe-jeans-plus-vest to bed – wearing body-con flares for airport runs. Flashback to a perma-smiling Jane Birkin sloping through passport control in her bellbottoms (wicker basket on arm) and you get why the look has stood the test of time. Get ready: the groupie’s favourite style piece has been remastered, placing the plump, perky bottom back in centre stage. Flares that pose a polished modern swagger have returned, give or take the frayed waistband.
Styling Day off: If there was a rule book on groupie style, chapter one would be all about downbeat and decorated denim flares. Up top, oversized is out. Instead, balance the volume of a wide leg with a second-skin tee — nautical stripes neaten up loose weekend flares, while a fitted denim jacket is the modern retake on Joan Jett’s boy-meets-girl ease. For day, pick a cropped flare that cuts off above the ankle and switch stomping platforms for lo-fi sneakers. Above all, invest in a sturdy leather boyfriend belt — the eye line, as all good groupies know, should be fixed around the waist. Polish up: Dark, floor-sweeping denim works best for evening. Go glamorous — your jeans should be skinny cut, flaring out just below the knee. Contrast deep indigo blues with a silky pussybow blouse and layers of lightweight necklaces, or embrace the glam rock possibilities: high-waisted trousers keep crop tops chic rather than cutesy. Steer the focus towards your footwear — shimmering platform sandals elevate petite frames and enforce a dance-floor worthy strut. For officepassable style, sharpen up with a crease-front flare and swap a knee-grazing belted coat (a favourite cover-up of Bardot) for a sharp blazer: your uptown muse is Lauren Hutton.

ME T MOLLY! baby’s dresses, which I then blew up so that they looked really strange. I became obsessed with the tulle material because it came in all these great colours and I love how it changes when you layer it. S: It’s the idea of girls playing dress up — like she hasn’t quite grown into the thing she’s wearing. M: Yes, that was definitely a big part of my SS15 collection. It’s this feeling of getting ready for prom but not being quite old enough to feel properly dressed up. That’s why it was really nice to style it with Alice (Molly’s sister) because she emphasised that by putting the dresses over T-shirts and jeans. S: You really feel that sense of rebellion. M: I like that, with our dresses, you can go and eat a pizza in them. S: They definitely feel special, though! For you, is it a conscious thing to be drawn towards something very feminine? M: I will always love the girliest stuff ever — pink and frills are my favourite things in the world! But that doesn’t mean there can’t be some edge too. S: The thing that I loved about your prom presentation was that the girls wearing your dresses were all your friends and so much of their personalities were injected into each look. M: We really thought about each dress and who would wear them. To see them wearing my dresses was such an amazing feeling. S: They were throwing some mad moves! M: I think everybody thinks that wearing a party dress is quite uncomfortable, but they would come up to me and tell me how comfortable they felt! I want girls to be able to run around in them. S: Tell us more about your AW15 presentation. M: There will still be smock dresses, but I want to make it a bit more grown-up. Maybe girls who are going to university as opposed to school — I’m into posh American art students! There’ll be some orange. A bit of velvet and woven wool. I also really love dress coats, too. S: Are you excited that you’re part of NEWGEN? M: I was so surprised and it’s all happened so quickly that I don’t even know what to think. I’m taking it a bit more seriously now and piecing together proper outfits as opposed to 20 dresses. S: University level grown-up? M: Yup, definitely. But there will still be lots of frills…

Susie catches up with dress obsessive and latest NEWGEN designer Molly Goddard for a chat about what it means to be ‘girly’ Molly Goddard knows how to thrill with frills. She made a mark with her BA collection at Central Saint Martins in 2012, consisting of the prettiest dresses made from metres and metres of tulle, adorned with crochet and smocking. Then midway through her MA course, she left to strike out on her own. In a surprise move, last September in a church in Mayfair, Goddard threw an impromptu prom party, with her gang of friends wearing her smocked tulle and cotton dresses in shades of mustard, pink and grey. They danced, drank punch and swayed together, resplendent in their Goddard creations. By the end of the evening, even the most tomboyish of the designer’s friends had been converted — her dresses were indeed fun to wear! Her friends weren’t the only ones who were impressed. Goddard then scored a presentation on-schedule at London Fashion Week as part of the NEWGEN sponsorship programme and, as a retail seal of approval, her dresses currently hang in super-concept store Dover Street Market. Beneath all the frills and the tulle, Goddard has tapped into an aesthetic of girliness that isn’t precious. You could well imagine girls wearing her dresses with plimsolls, jeans and a band T-shirt, shopping in the supermarket or hanging out in an old man’s pub. Her burgeoning brand perfectly represents the 21st-century license to indulge in all things girly without conforming to any outward notions of simpering femininity. At her studio near Ladbroke Grove, we delved into Molly’s tulle-filled world to find out more… Susie: I’ve known your work since your BA collection and you’ve really carved out a distinct aesthetic with these dramatic tulle-smocked ‘shells’, as I like to call them. How did that come about? Molly: It came from my baby clothes — patterns of 21

“This girl places as much emphasis on her inner wellbeing as her outer appearance.”
Zen Living The clean living girl places as much emphasis on her inner wellbeing as her outer appearance. That means daily meditation, gratitude journals, mindfulness exercises, perhaps even the occasional crystal… When it comes to her home, the theme is botanical bohemian: white walls, lush plant life, leather Ottomans, and an assortment of patterned rugs from her last trip to Marrakech.
Capsule Dressing Comfort is the essence of luxury for the clean living girl. That doesn’t mean she’s slobbing around in sweatpants — this look is all about sophisticated fabrics and relaxed silhouettes. Impeccable tailoring adds polish — she’ll pair a cashmere tank with sharp trousers, or sling a mannish coat over her silk dress — and glamour is all in the details. Think oversized sunglasses, barely-there heeled sandals, and rows of delicate gold hoops.
The New (F) it Girls A new clan of girls dominate our Instagram feeds. They’re the Scandinavian fashion bloggers with sunbleached hair and an impressive collection of vintage 501s. Or one of the clean living model crew that includes Jessica Hart, Karlie Kloss and Daria Werbowy.
Bare Beauty Suddenly, a full face of foundation just looks wrong. This girl invests in natural skincare, and saves make-up for sheer fun (which, by the way, she has a lot of). By day, she’ll get by with a swipe of rose gold highlighter and a slick of brow gel. By night, it’s bare skin with red lips, or a smudgy taupe eye. Brows are full, skin is permanently sunkissed, and nails are classic red or polish-free.
Daily Rituals How the clean living girl does her day-to-day: 1. A glass of warm water with lemon first thing 2. 20 minutes of meditation 3. Hot yoga to flush out the toxins 4. Body brushing
Global Nomad
5. A green smoothie 6. A streamlined daily uniform 7. A superfood bowl for lunch 8. A glass of organic red wine 9. A detoxifying Epsom Salt bath 10. Lots and lots of coconut oil
She travels light and seeks out destinations where she can keep up her meditation practice before an agave margarita on the sand. She’ll take a luxe ayurvedic retreat in Kerala over a shopping trip to New York any day (but Ibiza still gets a pass). Sayulita, Trancoso and Bali are at the top of her wanderlust list.
About Phoebe: Phoebe Lovatt is a Londoner living in LA, where she works as a freelance writer and editor. She is also the founder of The WW Club (thewwclub. com) an online/real life community founded to support girls working in the creative industries.

HOW TO BE A FASHION REBEL .......CIRCA NOW VE LO OM FR C NY
This is something Man Repeller, the website I founded in 2010 as a celebration of trends that women love but men hate, attempts to convey daily. Because to be in fashion in 2015 is not just to be concerned with how you dress, it is to encompass the larger picture of a lifestyle. Putting on clothes isn't quite enough, you've got to do it with great aplomb, with a sense of confidence that is propelled by the overarching question of “who cares?” Of course, how much we care varies from person to person -- this is fashion, after all -- but in our meditated choices, we emit a sense of confidenceas-set out-by-carelessness and spontaneity, two totems of genuine punk that lose their authenticity because of this level of deep-seated awareness. If you're looking for a particular example, might I suggest looking no further than my very own wedding, which occurred in 2012 in the hugely traditional ballroom you might expect a wedding to take place. To it, I wore a traditional Marchesa dress which would have abided by the rules of matrimony outfitting with its explosive tulle skirt and ruched bodice, but paired over it I went for a white motorcycle jacket. That and far too many strands of gold chains. And a flower crown. And sneakers. My nails were painted blue. It was obscene. It was my own form of rebellion. It didn't reject fashion, it just demanded that fashion support my choices and not the other way around. So maybe that's it, right? Maybe to be rebellious in fashion today is simply to stick up for yourself. To know yourself well enough to stick up for yourself. It is to exist to manufacture something so acutely unique, not even the most competent thesaurus could attempt to break it down.
WO R D S L E A N D R A M E D I N E
“Maybe to be rebellious in fashion today is simply to stick up for yourself.” What’s a fashion rebel these days? Let’s get a bit nerdy for a minute. If you look up the word ‘rebel’ in the thesaurus you get back ‘nonconformist’, ‘separatist’, ‘disobedient’ – synonyms that ring true with early subcultures and their unruly point of view. Always up for a steal, fashion co-opted the word when punk yelled its way onto the scene in the ’70s – integrating a rebel attitude into what we wear day-today. Precisely by gentrifying -- or fashionising -- the term, supported by designers like Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier and atypical dressers like, say, you and I, ‘the rebel’ has come to reflect an experience within the boundaries of popular culture. Because here's the thing about fashion: it is always concerned with what’s current. Any thesaurus will tell you this. It is conventional and it is trendy. It decisively runs counter to rebellion. Fashion and the non-conformist go together no easier, no better, no more fecklessly than do granola and pasta sauce. So how now, in 2015, do we resolve the grand inconsistency that is the pervasively popular ‘fashion rebel’? Frankly, by forgoing the words and considering the meaning. To be rebellious in fashion is to be neither disobedient or compliant. It is simply to think about what best suits you, no matter how off beat, and how to execute that vision most accurately. 23

Modern wardrobe staples for the discerning woman affirms Topshop Boutique’s new-term manifesto. Ineffably cool and irreverent, wry ’70s household prints sit with simple camis and mannish suiting. Belted waists worn loose and unrestrained signal domestic utility, with a twist. Cinematic yet understated, throw-on but never throwaway — wear with wit and intelligence

Mom: High-waisted, rolled-up jeans aren’t just for Moms anymore. This ’90s thowback is cool, comfy and perfect with a Breton crop and platforms. Hayden: Meet the ultimate boyfriend jeans. Offering a relaxed, loose fit, the Hayden looks like a one-off vintage find with its knee-rips and distressed finish. Jamie Flare — New: This season, you need a pair of flares. Tapping into the ’70s trend, our new highwaisted Jamie style offers an indigo wash and flares out from the knee — just the right amount. Wear it as an anchor to all your double denim looks. Girlfriend: Boyfriend jeans too baggy? You need a Girlfriend. Offering a slightly slimmer leg and cinched in at the waist, this style is a good option for dressing down your heels on a night out. Jamie: Our classic, ankle-grazing skinny jean that comes in every wash imaginable. Try a knee-ripped pair with a loose white shirt and skater pumps.
I
Joni: Looking for the spray-on effect? The Joni comes ultra-skinny with an ultra-high waist — only for the fashion brave! Wear them all summer with mini crops and ice-white pumps. Baxter: Want a skinny jean but with enough room to breathe? Then the Baxter is for you. On the generous side of skinny, this cut is all about laid-back cool, especially when paired with a sporty sweat and sliders. Leigh: If you’re not a high-waisted fan then go for the Leigh. These super-soft skinnies have a mid-rise cut that sits on your hips, working best with a simple tucked-in vest. Binx : Made from comfy stretch-denim, the Binx has all the features of high-waisted skinnies, but comes with a cool frayed hem. Take a tip from the catwalk and style them with your favourite denim jacket and suede mules. 45
