DAY 1
PRIVATE THOUGHTS
14.20 hrs
Initially, I thought it was a strange place to be briefed for a top secret mission. However, now that I am fully aware of what is expected of me, I can see why the commander insisted on the basement of the embassy, with its solid bomb-proof walls and noisy generators to lock out any eavesdroppers. This suggests there could be a traitor somewhere within US intelligence.
An important priority will be to identify the traitor within US intelligence.
To be responsible for the future of the world and humankind is pretty scary. I could really do with some assistance with this one. I guess it’s time to call in a few favours from my MI5 and MI6 contacts. The Global Intelligence Organisation only deal with the big ones! Who is the enemy? Who are my friends? I just don’t know. It will be very important to keep ALL information secret. I must trust no one – just my instincts. I must destroy the enemy if humankind is to survive!

COMMANDER’S BRIEFING
Task and Available Information Classification: TOP SECRET – Priority Alpha
TASK: To identify unknown enemy and locate high-speed gyroscopic-powered experimental aircraft – GS1 – stolen from the US Air Force facility located near Menworth Hill, Yorkshire, England. This faster-than-sound single-seater aircraft can easily be adapted to carry a DIRTY BOMB. It was initially removed at night by road, and then was flown east 30 km out to sea. It then turned onto a heading of 180 degrees, at which time it was lost from radar.
BACKGROUND INTELLIGENCE: A mixture of human and electronic intelligence indicates that this is the work of a covert global network, who intend holding the USA to ransom. It has been suggested that global control of all major powers is their aim. To date, three informers have vanished following discussions with MI5 and MI6, who are clearly at a loss as to what can be done.
RESTRICTED - NEED TO KNOW ONLY PRECAUTIONS: No one must know of this secret investigation. Cover names and stories must be used at all times. Unlimited access is granted to the US divisions of MI5 and MI6, also GCHQ and the NSA. All information collated must be encrypted and usual scrambling defence systems on all telephones used during the operation. There are two aspects to the mission:
(a) Locate and destroy the mission control centre used by the enemy. Could be on an airfield or even out at sea on a ship. It is thought that the enemy operate through a sophisticated website, although we don’t know the domain name at this time.
(b) Locate and recover (or destroy) the GS1 high-speed aircraft. If destruction is the only alternative, it might be possible via the mission control website.
AGENT IN CHARGE: Major Jack Strong
BACKGROUND: 10 years Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Attached to US Seals and Rangers. 10 years

DAY 2
HOSTILES IN PURSUIT
06.00 hrs
There is a lot to take in from yesterday’s briefing, but one thing is clear – the enemy seem to be controlling their operations through a website. It makes good sense to confirm details of the site and gain access without delay. I shall speak with contacts in MI5 in the hope that someone has heard of this shadowy organisation. First stop – MI5, Thames House, London.
10.00 hrs
Outside Thames House, London No luck with MI5, although it’s thought there may have been some recent signals traffic concerning a new organisation. Apparently computer experts are being recruited to work on a special project. This could be the group of people we are looking for. I have been advised to visit GCHQ, Cheltenham, so the best thing to do is to head there immediately.
13.00 hrs
Outside GCHQ, Cheltenham I’ve been followed! An estate vehicle containing two men locked onto me near Swindon. I did the usual counter-surveillance, but another car seems to have taken over and tailed me right to GCHQ. If they are still waiting for me when I leave, it will be a job for the Special Action Squad. These guys never need to know what the mission is about; their brief is simply to watch our backs and get rid of the opposition. They are really good at what they do.
4
15.00 hrs
About to Leave GCHQ It was a good meeting, and I was given access to the recent new signals traffic. Someone is definitely recruiting computer experts – I am hopeful this could be the enemy. It looks like they are using a mixture of number and word systems, so all I have to do now is return to base to decode the encrypted signals. However, as I walked out of GCHQ, I was immediately aware of both pursuit vehicles. As I write, I can see that their occupants are watching me from across the car park. It’s time they were dealt with!
16.25 hrs
Lay-by, Birdlip Hill It’s a good job we have our own encrypted sat phones. In view of the potential for an official enquiry following this mission, I will record the details of the messages transmitted to and received from Sierra Alpha Control, and the hair-raising chase that followed! These are all in accordance with official guidelines: Transmitted – ‘Sierra Alpha Control, this is Uniform Charlie needing immediate assistance. Location 7 miles northeast GCHQ. It’s a disposal job – hostile hunting pack. Over …’ Received – ‘Uniform Charlie from Sierra Alpha. Helio en route. Remain within a radius of 5 miles current position. Will contact you asap. Over and out.’ 5
The backup helicopter arrived a few minutes after my call and hovered at 500 metres, out of sight of the enemy. As soon as the hostile vehicles were identified, a laser should have blasted from the helicopter, causing a technical failure and rendering the cars undrivable. However, things did not go according to plan. Unexpectedly, someone in a third hostile vehicle took a potshot at the helio. It took several hits and had to make a forced landing at the foot of Birdlip Hill. It was then up to me to take out hostile number three, and luckily my extensive knowledge of the area proved extremely useful. I coaxed the driver of the third vehicle out into the open, then, driving at high speed, tricked him into a side road … a side road that led to nowhere! The last I saw of him, he was plummeting off a 400-metre drop. Meanwhile, the helicopter became airborne once again and immobilised hostiles one and two. A police car arrived to assist the broken-down cars – or so the enemy thought. Our bogus police then executed a well-rehearsed routine, ‘arresting’ the opposition and seizing their vehicles. The prisoners will now be transported directly to their ‘new home’ – Interrogation Unit Moonglow. 6
17.30 hrs
Interrogation Unit Moonglow I am about to join our interrogation experts and start questioning the prisoners. We need to get as much information from them as possible in the hope we will be able to infiltrate their mission control, identify the traitor in the embassy and learn the location of the airfield on which the gyroscopic aircraft is hidden. These nasties will be held indefinitely and gradually drained of everything they know!
7
DAY 3
STEALTH EXPOSED
03.25 hrs
Interrogation Unit Moonglow
Must keep the enemy’s code book at the back of this dossier at all times. Am hoping it will provide the key to any codes I have to crack on this mission.
We have been interrogating the prisoners all night and have had some luck. Hidden in a secret compartment in one of the enemy vehicles, our technical search staff found what seems to be the enemy’s operational code book. It confirms that the enemy organisation operates under the name ‘Stealth’.
The ‘Mission Control Website Code’ in Stealth’s code book might help me crack this one. It will be a good idea to note any workings out at the back of this dossier.
09.00 hrs
Physical searches of the enemy agents revealed a piece of paper with the following sequence of numbers, obviously written in some sort of code: 23/23/23/./22/5/14/15/13/18/9/19/9/14/7/./3/15/13 I wonder whether I’ll be able to crack the code with the help of Stealth’s code book? If so, then I should be able to access their mission control centre via their website. These guys are proving tough to break. Time now to return to the embassy for a few hours’ sleep and leave the experts to do what they do best … interrogate.
US Embassy, London As I suspected, the sequence of numbers is written using a basic encryption method called a one-time pad. Decoding it has allowed me to access the secret
8
Must obtain the access code if I am to enter Stealth’s mission control website.
10.30 hrs
I am right! Using the Access Code Encryption System in Stealth’s code book does allow progression into their mission control site.
website that runs Stealth’s mission control. As expected, I cannot get past the introduction page because another access code is required. Our next move, therefore, is for the interrogation unit to give the prisoners a nice cup of coffee laced with truth serum. This usually starts to work after a very short while, so, with any luck, we should have a major breakthrough within the hour. The prisoners know a few tricks of their own, so it took a while to get the access code. Once again, they seem to be using a simple but tricky one-time pad system, as used by most secret agents. The numbers this time are: 7/8/25/23. These guys are very clever – must think ahead every step of the way! The next task is to confirm the identity of the traitor in the embassy. We have collected a considerable amount of information during interrogation, and some of it points to the inside informant being a woman who has access to intelligence reports. However, we must remember that this could be an attempt to lead us away from the real culprit. Catching the traitor in the act would be the best method of dealing with this problem. We will keep up the questioning and see what develops.
9
DAY 4
ON THE RUN!
09.00 hrs
Interrogation Unit Moonglow Early this morning, one of the prisoners escaped! After stealing a car, he drove towards the south coast, where there are several private airfields. Little did he know that a surveillance helicopter was hot on his tail. Intelligence agencies are capable of many tricks to flush out enemy spies within their midst. We decided to follow a simple, but often successful, method and deliberately allowed the prisoner to escape. Invariably the escapee makes contact with the insider and so reveals the traitor’s identity. This can sometimes provide considerable further information, especially if the identified internal spy is actually left in place and monitored along with the escaped prisoner. Let’s hope our plan works!
12.00 hrs Must check Stealth’s code book for the phonetic alphabets of the world – could help to reveal the traitor’s identity. Does the code name reflect the traitor’s initials? 10
We have been monitoring the activities of three members of staff suspected of being the traitor, and we now know that one of them, a man, met up with the escaped prisoner. Unfortunately, due to a technical hiccup with surveillance equipment, it was impossible to make a positive identification. However, we do now know the traitor’s code name – ROMEO SIERRA FOXTROT – which, along with the description from the following suspect report, should crack his ID.
14.00 hrs
Have discovered this icon on Stealth’s mission control website. I wonder what will happen if I input the traitor’s name?
Intelligence Code Centre, US Embassy, London At last we have identified the traitor. The description was not 100 per cent helpful, but the initial letters of his code name turned out to be the final clue. Out of the three suspects, one of them is now under 24-hour surveillance. By keeping watch on this person around the clock, we will be able to intercept useful clues and also feed him with ‘disinformation’.
