ïžïï ï ïžï¶ïïï© YOTZER OR ïžïï ï ïžï¶ïïï© Yotzer Or is the first blessing before the ï²ï®ïïï Shema in a morning service. Its theme is creation. It is paralleled by the ïï©ï¡ïïžï² ï ï ï ï¡ï©ïžïï²ï® ï ï Maâariv Aravim in the evening.
BIG IDEA It is a sunrise prayer that comes from the Prophet Isaiah. Isaiah credits God for creating âgood and evil,â the prayer rewrites this as âcreating all.â
LESSON: âLIGHT AND EVILâ DESCRIPTION Students examine the way that the Rabbis transformed a verse from the prophet Isaiah into the ïžïï ï ïžï¶ïïï© Yotzer Or. Evil is the key issue.
STEPS 1. The first blessing before the Shema is called the ïžïï ï ïžï¶ïïï© Yotzer Or. It says: Who creates light and makes darkness, makes peace and creates all. 2. This line is taken from the prophet Isaiah 45:7: Who creates light and makes darkness, makes peace and creates evil. 3. What did the Rabbis change when they adapted Isaiah into ïžïï ï ïžï¶ïïï© Yotzer Or? Why do you think they made this change? 4. Debate: Did God create Evil? Yes, says: âGod wanted people to have free will. That meant God had to be behind all choices.â No, says: âGod couldnât be the source for evil.â 5. âAllâ still contains the idea that God âcreated evil.â
GOALS 1. ïžïï ï ïžï¶ïïï© Yotzer Or is the morning bless that is one of two that precedes the ï²ï®ïïï Shema. 2. It uses a metaphoric system that equates light with good and darkness with evil.

The Hidden Light One the first day of creation God created light, but God didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t create the sun, moon, and stars until the fourth day. The Talmud teaches that for three days a special light, one that came directly from God, filled the world. We are told that God hid this special light away and the righteous will get to use this light in the future. The Baal Shem Tov, the first Hasidic Rebbe, taught that this light is hidden in the Torah and that when we find it it helps us see from one side of forever to the other. Questions: How can light be hidden in the Torah? What kind of light is it that can help us see from one side of forever to the other?
