Experiences for Teaching Prayer by Joel Lurie Grishaver Are you tired of spending endless amounts of time on reading practice or prayer recitation? Are you wishing your could spend more time on teaching your students to understand the prayers? Here is the book you’ve always wanted. Experiences for Teaching Prayer will allow you to focus on the kavannah of prayer and create more enjoyable and meaningful experiences for your students. Experiences for Teaching Prayer is a compendium of experiential lesson plans for teaching the core liturgy. Activities include singing, dancing, technology, simulations and dozens of other activities. Each lesson is written to teach a big idea about the prayer. These activities were written for the classroom with 12-15 student, and all are adaptable to work with most student grade clusters. Experiences for Teaching Prayer includes additional material from the Torah Aura collection, including the prayers in Hebrew matching each movement’s liturgy, projectable versions of the prayers, and worksheets for some drill. This book is focused on sharing two or three activities per prayer-emphasizing the theme (or Kavanah) This is the stuff to be doing when not reading Hebrew out loud. It is a tract designed to make prayer more compelling. These are small events designed for classrooms with 7 to 15 students. They are designed to make the context of the prayers more compelling. We are aiming at events that take 15 to 30 minutes and have a single point to make. No matter how you are teaching the mastery of the prayers, these activities give you a fun way of focusing on one or more key ideas about each prayer. This is perfect enrichment for any prayer methodology.

 YOTZER OR  Yotzer Or is the first blessing before the  Shema in a morning service. Its theme is creation. It is paralleled by the       Ma’ariv Aravim in the evening.

BIG IDEA It is a sunrise prayer that comes from the Prophet Isaiah. Isaiah credits God for creating “good and evil,” the prayer rewrites this as “creating all.”

LESSON: “LIGHT AND EVIL” DESCRIPTION Students examine the way that the Rabbis transformed a verse from the prophet Isaiah into the  Yotzer Or. Evil is the key issue.

STEPS 1. The first blessing before the Shema is called the  Yotzer Or. It says: Who creates light and makes darkness, makes peace and creates all. 2. This line is taken from the prophet Isaiah 45:7: Who creates light and makes darkness, makes peace and creates evil. 3. What did the Rabbis change when they adapted Isaiah into  Yotzer Or? Why do you think they made this change? 4. Debate: Did God create Evil? Yes, says: “God wanted people to have free will. That meant God had to be behind all choices.” No, says: “God couldn’t be the source for evil.” 5. “All” still contains the idea that God “created evil.”

GOALS 1.  Yotzer Or is the morning bless that is one of two that precedes the  Shema. 2. It uses a metaphoric system that equates light with good and darkness with evil.

YOU WILL NEED 1. Copies of the first line of  Yotzer Or and the Isaiah passage (see pages 10–18).

The Hidden Light One the first day of creation God created light, but God didn’t create the sun, moon, and stars until the fourth day. The Talmud teaches that for three days a special light, one that came directly from God, filled the world. We are told that God hid this special light away and the righteous will get to use this light in the future. The Baal Shem Tov, the first Hasidic Rebbe, taught that this light is hidden in the Torah and that when we find it it helps us see from one side of forever to the other. Questions: How can light be hidden in the Torah? What kind of light is it that can help us see from one side of forever to the other? Now as a group, write a six line poem about someplace else that this special light is hidden.
