Stories We Pray Insights into the Inner-Work of Jewish Worship Joel Lurie Grishaver

Every prayer has a story. When the rabbis of the Talmud wanted to explain what a prayer means they told the story of the first time a prayer was said. They would root each prayer in the spiritual history of major Jewish figures. By knowing these stories, we get a sense of what each prayer should mean to us. By speaking of famous moments that were human breakthroughs with God, we get to look at our own relationship with God. Stories We Pray presents an introduction to almost every prayer in the siddur and stories that root the prayer in the heart. Here is an original way of looking at the liturgy and unfolding the meaning that is to be found there. Are you a rabbi, an educator, a camp person, a youth group leader, a Jew who wants to find prayer meaningful—here is a book that will expand your resources and understandings. Grade: 3–5. Format: Textbook and workbook. Subjects: Torah study, Bible heroes.

Being Torah brings students into Torah by inviting them to become biblical commentators. Based on a real translation of the biblical text, crafted specifically for third to fifth graders, students are drawn into the words of Torah. Using colored clues, they focus on the word clues embedded in the text—the number of times given words are used in a story, the changes between what one Purchase person says and what another person says that person said, and the parallel words that link one story to another. This is not a book about Torah—it is a book of Torah— making Torah study accessible. The Being Torah Student Commentary helps break down the biblical stories into a series of individual inquiries. The Circle of Jewish Life By Joel Lurie Grishaver

Grades: 4–7. Format: Textbook. Subject: Jewish lifecycle. Key Features—Empower students to meaningfully participate in the broad range of Jewish life cycle events. Chaptera include traditional texts, full scripts of life cycle ceremonies, art projects, and stories.Focus on diversity of Jewish life, with elements that address adoption, divorce, gay marriage, and mourning. Chapters on lifelong Jewish learning, aging, and conversion push learning about the Jewish life cycle beyond brit milah, b’nai mitzvah, and weddings.

Life cycle is important because it is a place where our students will encounter Judaism in real life. They will all celebrate weddings, become bar or bat mitzvah, and will face funerals. It is in those moments that the Jewish tradition can be a rich resource and make a difference. In order for that to happen they need two things: (1) They need to know the dance steps. That includes knowing the names, prayers, rituals, and vocabulary associated with a particular lifecycle event. But also (2) they need to have a sense of its meaning, of the values it actualizes, of the way it connects the Eternal to real life experience. The Circle of Jewish Life is the only life cycle resource that enables both of these. This is a life cycle book for the new millennium; one that describes Jewish life in the ways that our students actually experience. It contains both texts and activities. It enters areas where you need to go, ones that you’ve never had a resource for before: conversion, adoption, divorce, the meaning of growing old and more. The book is rich in Jewish texts, stories, and opportunities to not only learn the vocabulary of the Jewish life cycle but to enter into its concepts as well. Purchase

I Have Some Questions About God Rabbis Bradley Shavit Artson, Ed Feinstein, Elyse Frishman, Joshua Hammerman, Jeffrey K. Salkin, and Sybil Sheridan. Edited by Joel Lurie Grishaver

Grades: 3-4. Format: Textbook. Subjects: God. Key Features—Inquiry-based approach to teaching about God to young children. Stories from six incredible rabbis inform students’ exploration of theological issues. Award-winning illustration and design makes the subject matter approachable and teachable.

Children want to talk about God. They have lots of questions. Parents and teachers are often afraid to talk about God because they have their own questions. This book was written to let teachers and parents feel comfortable having the conversations that their children are seeking. Six wonderful rabbis were invited to write answers, many in the form of stories, to these questions. Exercises were added to expand the process and encourage children to reflect and share, looking at their experiences of God in the world. The end result, with beautiful illustrations by Michelle Noiset, is a collection of wonderful stories and hands-on experiences. If there is one experience (other than Israel) we want our students to have it is being part of a caring community. This book artfully helps each class build themselves into a sacred community. Community is not only the subject of this book, it is also the end result of the learning and experiences in this book. While covering topics like friendship, respect, responsibility, social justice, connection, celebration, prayer, peace, and Talmud Torah, the book directs students to build relationships via each of these categories. God: Jewish Choices for Struggling with the Ultimate Edited by Josh Mason-Barkin

Grades: 8–12. Format: Textbook. Subject: God.

Purchase

Judaism’s approach to the Divine is not a black and white matter. Finding belief is not about answering simple yesor-no questions. God is about asking tough questions, finding that there’s usually more than one “Jewish” answer, and trying to make a choice that fits. That’s why we asked forty rabbinical students, new voices in Jewish thought, and young Jewish educators to answer some big questions about God. They identify as Conservative, Reform, Renewal, Modern Orthodox, Reconstructionist, and non-denominational. They’re traditionalists and iconoclasts, activists and authors. This book is a compendium of their answers. Carefully edited and organized to be a text for the Jewish classroom, God: Jewish Choices for Struggling with the Ultimate is a resource for helping every student clarify and expand his or her own beliefs.
