The design was inspired by the construction of a kaleidoscope as well as one’s experience with the object. Three words were chosen to communicate the intended user experience. Perceive, reflect, and evolve convey the design solution in order to rejuvenate and modernize this retail company.

This project was inspired by the location of this boutique hotel, San Francisco. The foundation of this city was molded by the discovery of gold. The journey of this natural element inspired the design of the Halcyon Hotel; from its native origin, the earth’s core, to the surface of San Francisco. The refined minimalism of Halcyon compares to the natural qualities and characteristics seen in gold.

— When entering the Halcyon Hotel, guests are welcomed with contrasting golden and onyx hues. — With a minimalist approach on aesthetic, the incorporation of gold allows it to resonate within the space. — Material and furniture selections were inspired by the soft texture of gold, creating a comfortable and relaxing first impression.

During the Gold Rush of 1849, hard-rock mining was one of the primary ways people discovered gold. Tunnels were carved into the earth as a means of access, creating long narrow openings, called chasms. Chasm, Halcyon’s fine dining restaurant, is an elegant take on these passageways in the search for gold.
—The architectural forms were designed to resemble the archways made in passages of gold mines — Stuccoed arches and columns are accented with polished gold molding to continue the grand disposition into the restaurant hotel.
—Dark hues, rusticated surfaces, and minimal luminairs create a private fine dining experience and intimate atmosphere
16
The historic Gold Rush of 1849, and its discovery, caused a buzz of excitement to surge around the world. Influence by this enthusiasm, Rush Hour Bar and Eatery welcomes guests into a luminous and energetic space. The raw natural state of gold, with its nugget shape and radiant sheen, inspired the design for this interior.
—Design features such as dazzling tile, the light reflecting geometric accent wall, and interspersed golden elements reinforces the luminousity qualities of gold. —The organic form of the luminaires above the bar mimic the natural nugget shape of gold
18
Halcyon’s spa embodies the organic beauty of California’s riverbeds. The design of the spa was driven by the process of panning for gold.
— Gold is one of earth’s rarest materials. One quality that makes it unique, is its weight. This quality kept it stagnent in the California river beds in 1849. — This characteristic is represented in the gold material surrounding the steps of the mineral pool.
— A cornerstone of the space is the centerally located water feature. This biophilic space incorporates Minimo’s mineral pool. —By incorporating climbing vines, the lounge allows clients to escape to a natural paradise.

The refinery process of gold was the conceptual influence of the guest level. During the refining process, alloys are formed as a result of mixing gold with other metals. Metals such as copper and silver create alloy combinations that result in different shades of gold. The color properties of these metals, as well as the resulting shades of gold, are seen throughout the design.
Reacting to ocean currents gold, along with other metals, are transported to their final destination. The wallcovering in the single bed guestrooms is an abstract representation of this process.

The techtonic movements beneath’s Earth’s core lead to the development of many minerals. Gold is pushed through the cracks in the Earth’s surface. Therefore the movement and shifting on these plates led to the inspiration for Halcyon’s rooftop bar Tonic, and restaurant Plated.

The site location of this project is at a perfect middle point between the community of Starkville and the campus of Mississippi State University. From a literal perspective, the site location of this project meets at a point, emerging the idea of Vertex. The simple shape these three points made influenced the entrance faรงade as well as design elements in the interior.

Inspiration was derived from the different forms of how renewable energy is collected. Natural energy is harnessed from the environment and its natural elements. Similarly, employees use their environments to energize and renew themselves and work productivity.
During the workday, our brains go through three different modes: activation, focus, and rejuvenation.
-Collaborating at a white board -Socializing in small meeting space -Taking a moment for movement
-Using a private office for heads down time -Relocating to quiet zone in office
-Retreating to closed lounge/quiet room -Renourishment in the workcafe -Lounging in workcafe
This cycle we go through is similar to the different resources we use to produce renewable energy.
Wind turbines produce electricity through kinetic energy. Movement is the necessary element.
Hydropower conducts power through constant current. Maintaining a steady rhythm is the necessary element.
Solar power is a conversion of sunlight into electricity. Recharging through conversion is the necessary element.
