Edible Wild Berries: Iconic Canadian Food

Botanical Gardens and Conservation in the 21st Century

The fragrance of woodland strawberries, the tangy taste of chokecherry jelly and the deep rich colour of blueberry pie– for many Canadians, picking and eating wild berries is a cherished memory and much-anticipated activity. For thousands of years, these fruits have also been a key component of Indigenous peoples’ food systems, providing important nutrients and flavours, and contributing to local economies and culture. Nancy will present some of the most interesting wild berry species, describing their cultural significance, traditional harvesting and processing techniques, population threats and appropriate use in gardens.

Botanical gardens have a long and fascinating history, and are constantly evolving to address contemporary needs. In the past 40 years they have increasingly focused on plant conservation and human well-being. Conservation work by botanical gardens is as diverse as the gardens themselves and, among other things, includes seed banks, plant collections, ecological restoration and education on the importance of plant diversity for economic, medicinal and cultural purposes. David will present inspirational examples of botanical gardens that have embraced their new conservation role.

Thursday, Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m. Nancy Turner, University of British Columbia

TBG’s Urban Ravine Symposium: Explore, Restore and Celebrate Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, Toronto Botanical Garden

Thursday, Nov. 22, 7:30 p.m. Dr. David Galbraith, Royal Botanical Gardens

Urban ravines provide us with a quick escape from the stresses of city living. Shady trees, flood-protecting wetlands, colourful songbirds and bejeweled butterflies are just a few of the many natural treasures offered without cost. Ravines also provide numerous free recreational opportunities. However, decades of taking, and not giving back, have taken a toll on these treasured landscapes. Urban ravines are experiencing erosion, invasive species, flooding and encroachment at unprecedented levels.

These challenges and creative solutions will be discussed at TBG’s symposium. Through talks, displays, tours and networking, this event will contribute greatly to the growing enthusiasm and expertise for urban ravine restoration. Early bird registration in place until Friday, Sept. 21: $70 - $110 Regular registration starts Saturday, Sept. 22: $80 - $130
