Thank you for your dedication, and we wish you a joyful holiday season!
Laundry Bins
We have noticed that on occasion laundry bins have been left in the back hallway in front of the PVS door Please remember that we need to keep the hallway clear in front of that door for fire and safety reasons. Thank you!
Volunteer Spotlight of the Month
We are so grateful for all our volunteers; we rely heavily on your support to meet our operational needs. We want to take time once a month to extend our thanks to a volunteer who has had a positive impact at Toronto Humane Society based on staff/volunteer feedback.
This Month we would like to shine a spotlight on Heather I-W!
If you’ve attended one of our events in the last few years, chances are you would have met Heather and her magnetic smile. Heather, who has just surpassed her three-year anniversary volunteering with us, has become an invaluable asset at all of our events. She is effervescent, hardworking, and a joy to have.
In her time as a foster parent, Shastine took onBefore Heather started volunteering with us, she was already involved with Toronto Humane Society as an adopter. “All my first cats came from Toronto Humane Society on Wellesley Street More recently, I have adopted 4 birds from Toronto Humane Society on River Street.” She loves animals and has always wanted to donate her time, and once she cut back her working hours, it created the perfect opportunity for her As she puts it, “I just wanted to give back.”
Since starting with us, she has helped at numerous events and has learned a lot “I am so impressed with the updates at Purpose and Learning Days as the scope of what Toronto Humane Society can do is absolutely amazing.” She has also, “met lots of nice fur parents as well as awesome staff and other volunteers”
What keeps her coming back after three years is her love for animals, the friendly and helpful staff and the desire to help with the welfare of animals She also enjoys to hear some of the happy endings for animals. Finally, she said, “It is also a connection to the community.”
Well, Heather, we really appreciate all the help you have donated and dedication you have exhibited to Toronto Humane Society these past few years, and we look forward to many more years to come. Please join us in celebrating Heather this month!

Honouring and Remembering Justice Murray Sinclair: An Unparalleled Voice for Reconciliation, Justice, and Empathy
It is with profound respect and deep sadness that we reflect on the passing of The Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair, an Anishinaabe leader, former Manitoba judge and Senator, and Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Justice Sinclair, whose legacy of leadership and advocacy touched countless lives, passed away on November 4th, 2024, at the age of 73.
Championing Truth, Reconciliation, and Justice:
Justice Sinclair was a towering figure whose life was defined by trailblazing achievements and an unwavering commitment to justice, reconciliation, and compassion He served as Manitoba's first Indigenous judge and was also appointed to the Senate of Canada on April 2, 2016. From 2009 to 2015, as Chair of the TRC, he courageously led efforts to document and confront the painful truths and lasting impact of the residential school system an ongoing legacy that continues to affect First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. The TRC’s Final Report, which includes the transformative 94 Calls to Action, remains a cornerstone of Canada’s reconciliation movement Justice Sinclair’s reminder that "Reconciliation is not an Aboriginal problem it is a Canadian problem It involves all of us” urges all Canadians to act with empathy, understanding, and accountability, emphasizing reconciliation as a shared responsibility and a vital step toward justice and healing.
Justice Sinclair’s Advocacy for Animals
Justice Sinclair’s compassion extended beyond human justice to the welfare of animals as well as protecting all other elements of creation His commitment to humane treatment of animals
drew from his deep Indigenous teachings, which emphasize the sacred interconnectedness of all life. In his own words:
“The subject matter of saving animals, of protecting animals, is very dear to my heart because my teachings as an Indigenous person […] are very strong that we are closely connected to the earth, that we are closely connected to the water and closely connected to all beings and creation, including the animals.”
As a Senator, his legislative contributions, including the Free Willy Bill, which ended the captivity of whales and dolphins in Canada, and the Jane Goodall Act, aimed at protecting captive animals more broadly, underscored his dedication to ensuring the humane treatment of all beings
Carrying Forward Justice Sinclair’s Legacy of Justice and Compassion
Justice Sinclair was a beacon of inspiration for all Canadians His values and advocacy, particularly those rooted in the interdependence of all life and the importance of treating animals with mutual respect, profoundly resonate with our mission of improving the lives of animals and building a more compassionate world As we honour his remarkable life and achievements, we reaffirm our commitment to paying tribute to Indigenous histories, cultures, and worldviews; strengthening our relationships with Indigenous communities; and advancing his vision of a just, equitable, and compassionate world for all beings human and animal alike.
Meet Loonie and Her Pups: Our Latest Transfer
We’re thrilled to introduce you to our newest arrivals! On November 28th, Loonie and her litter of six adorable puppies, affectionately called “The Cash Pups,” joined us at Toronto Humane Society. Each pup is eager to find a loving forever home!
Though they haven’t faced the same health challenges as their mom, we’ll continue to monitor them closely to ensure they stay healthy and happy.
Loonie, their dedicated mom, tested positive for heartworm and Lyme disease. While she’s not quite ready for adoption yet, she’s receiving the necessary treatment and care to make a full recovery
Her puppies Cash, Peso, Doubloon, Yen, Crypto, and Rupees are about five months old and thriving Each has a unique personality, but they all share a common love for playtime and snuggles!
Loonie’s pups are ready to start their next chapter Loonie will need some additional time to complete her heartworm treatment, but with the right care and support, she’ll soon be ready for adoption as well
A big thank you to everyone involved in their transfer and for ensuring Loonie and her pups receive the best care possible!
Happy Tails Presented by Royale: Echo
In September 2022, Echo, formerly known as Susie, made the long journey from Austin, Texas, to Toronto Humane Society at just one year old. During her intake exam, Echo proved to be a healthy, good-natured dog, and it wasn’t long before she found her perfect match Less than two months later, she was adopted, and her new life began.
Now, two years later, Echo’s pet parents have shared an incredible update on their gentle giant:
“It’s been two years since we adopted Echo, formerly known as Susie, and we hardly remember what life was like before Echo is our gentle giant, always looking for a snuggle (or a treat). She welcomes everyone into our home like a long-lost friend and has made even the most non-dog people fall in love with her Must be those gorgeous golden eyes!
Two separate DNA tests confirmed that this girl is a Great Pyrenees and Shepherd mix, and we definitely have the best of both breeds in her.
Echo enjoys sunning herself in the backyard, playing with pup friends at the beach, and napping with her humans. She loves all living things except squirrels, raccoons, and cats. Thanks, Toronto Humane Society, for helping us complete our family!”
Echo has truly flourished in her loving home, bringing joy, love, and a whole lot of snuggles to her family From her warm welcomes to her backyard sunbathing, Echo has found her perfect place, and we couldn’t be happier for her. We are grateful to be a part of her journey and are thrilled to see her thrive.

From cookies to cakes, these homemade treats were a crowd favorite and brought smiles to everyone’s faces
We also want to give a special shoutout to our amazing photographer volunteers – Brandon and Dom All the pets in attendance looked absolutely adorable, and their families now have lasting memories to treasure for years to come.
