Toronto Humane Society in the News
radio Heres what Toronto Humane Society news was buzzing in the media last month:
Keeping Pets Safe During Solar Eclipse
Prominent news outlets such as Time Magazine, ICI Radio-Canada, Global News, BlogTO, DailyHive Toronto, Toronto Sun, CityNews and Toronto Star highlight Toronto Humane Society’s tips to keep pets safe during the solar eclipse on April 8th

Preserving Bonds: Insights from Toronto Humane Society’s Urgent Care Foster Program Case Report
Toronto Humane Society’s Urgent Care foster program stands as a beacon of hope and support for individuals navigating crisis situations, offering a lifeline for their beloved animal companions. From housing instability to fleeing interpersonal violence or undergoing healthcare treatments, the program extends a compassionate hand to those in need, preserving the invaluable human-animal bond.
To evaluate the impact of the Urgent Care foster program, Toronto Humane Society’s Dr Jacklyn Ellis, Director of Behaviour, Dillon Dodson, Director of Social Work, and Larisa Nagelberg, Director of Strategic Initiatives & Mission Advancement, along with Rachel Bedder (Toronto Humane Society’s first social work student from the University of Toronto), published “Unleashing insights from Toronto Humane Society’s urgent care fostering program: a community case report” in the esteemed Journal of Shelter Medicine & Community Animal Health, published by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians.
More About the Community Case Study
The depth of impact rendered by the Urgent Care foster program is truly staggering, as reflected in the wealth of data analyzed in the case report. Over the study period, encompassing January 1, 2020, to October 1, 2022, 358 admissions were recorded, representing 328 unique animals from 244 families. Among these admissions, an astounding 74% resulted in joyful reunions between pets and their families a testament to the program’s efficacy in preserving familial bonds even in the face of adversity. This information is crucial as it is the first and only publication about
pet safekeeping statistics, and it is our hope that it will inspire and support other organizations to launch similar programs to assist families in need in their communities.
The report delves into the intricacies of the program’s operations, shedding light on key variables that influence outcomes Factors such as species, communication frequency, and medical or behavioural needs emerge as critical determinants of outcomes Through meticulous analysis, opportunities for program enhancement have been identified, paving the way for even greater impact in the future.
The significance of the human-animal bond cannot be overstated, and the Urgent Care foster program stands as a shining example of its power to heal and uplift. In times of crisis, when individuals are grappling with immense challenges, the presence of a beloved pet can provide solace and strength beyond measure By extending support to both humans and animals alike, the Urgent Care foster program embodies the ethos of compassion in action
As we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Jacklyn Ellis, Dillon Dodson, Larisa Nagelberg, and Rachel Bedder on this achievement, let us also reaffirm our commitment to fostering a world where every individual, regardless of circumstance, can experience the profound joy and comfort of companionship with their animal companions Together, let us continue to champion initiatives that uphold the sanctity of the human-animal bond and nurture a more compassionate society for all.

Jonathan Yim - A Dedicated Force at Toronto Humane Society
As an animal care volunteer working with cats and dogs, Jonathan has become an invaluable member of the team, contributing over 250 hours in just seven months and achieving advanced training in both Level 2 Feline and Purple Dogs His journey and commitment to Toronto Humane Society reflect his deep love for animals and his admiration for the people who work tirelessly to support them.
Jonathan's passion for volunteering at Toronto Humane Society stems from a lifelong love for animals. Despite always wanting a dog, his family circumstances didn't allow for one. This unmet desire found a fulfilling outlet through his volunteer work, where he experiences the therapeutic benefits of being around animals
Jonathan's connection with the animals he cares for not only fulfills a personal need but also contributes significantly to their well-being.
What keeps Jonathan coming back to Toronto Humane Society is a combination of the remarkable people and the animals he has grown to love. He values the hardworking, empathetic, kind, and humble nature of his colleagues, and he recognizes the ongoing need for more helping hands. The opportunity to care for the "doggos and cattos" provides Jonathan with a sense of purpose and fulfillment that keeps him dedicated to his volunteer role
Jonathan Yim's journey with Toronto Humane Society is a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated volunteers can have on the lives of animals and the overall mission of the organization. His story is one of love, respect, and unwavering commitment to making a difference, and we are immensely grateful to have him as part of the Toronto Humane Society family

Volunteer Reminders
Feedings Reminder: We'd also like to remind our volunteers to double check the food list before leaving food out for animals. There have been a few instances over the last couple of months where either animals were overfed or given the wrong type of food.
Making sure we leave the right kind of feed out is doubly important because digestive issues and allergies can cause significant difference in the animals' stress levels at the shelter.
Also ensure that you read the notes thoroughly on what kind of bowl/feeder is ok to use for the dogs
For example, the food list may say no plastic feeders – which is likely due to the dog being a habitual chewer and we don't want them consuming pieces of plastic
Summer Vacations: Many volunteers are off for multiple months this summer, so if you can pick up extra shifts, it will be helpful!
If you also need to be away, please remove your shifts ahead of time so we can get an idea of coverage. You only need to email Volunteer Services if you need to miss 3 weeks or more in a row just so we can make note of it For those of you away this summer enjoy your vacations!
Volunteer at the Community Fair and Wellness Zone During Pride Weekend
As June unfolds, Toronto Humane Society proudly joins the global community in celebrating Pride Month Pride Month is a celebration of the remarkable history and achievements of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities
It’s important to note that this Pride Month comes amid a troubling rise in hate and anti2SLGBTQIA+ legislation across regions. These actions threaten the hard-fought rights and wellbeing of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and undermine progress toward social equity and inclusion We stand firmly against homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia
Pride Month is not only a celebration but also a call to action. It reminds us of the ongoing fight for equity and justice. We must commit to supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, advocating for their rights, and challenging any form of bigotry or hate

Toronto Humane Society's Training and Behaviour Classes Helped Smokey Bear Settle into His Forever Home
We believe in the power of training and behaviour classes to transform the lives of both pets and their families. Our comprehensive training programs are designed to address a wide range of behavioural issues, helping pets settle into their new homes and fostering stronger bonds between animals and their human companions. One heartwarming success story is that of Smokey Bear, a 6-year-old Rottweiler, who found his forever home with Mike through a facilitated adoption in October 2023
Smokey Bear's Journey
When Smokey Bear first joined Mike's family, he was quite shut down and distrustful of people He exhibited signs of resource guarding with his food bowl, had difficulty settling at home, pulled on the leash, and showed reactivity to other dogs, some
people, and loud vehicles Understanding the challenges ahead, Mike and Smokey Bear enrolled into private training and behaviour classes with Toronto Humane Society to help Smokey Bear settle into his new environment and address these behavioural issues
Addressing Management and Leash Skills
During the initial session, Claire Blumenthal, CPDT-KA, FFCP, Senior Certified Trainer and Behaviour Education Associate, Public Training Services at Toronto Humane Society, provided Mike with management recommendations to prevent resource guarding in the home They also worked on leash walking skills to help with Smokey Bear's pulling and reactivity. Following this first session, Mike felt much more confident in
handling Smokey Bear on the leash and managing his food guarding at home safely.
Follow-Up Sessions: Behaviour Modification
Over the next few months, Mike and Smokey Bear attended several follow-up sessions withClaireThey focused on behaviour modification exercises for both resource guarding and reactivity. Smokey Bear's personality quickly began to shine through, and each day he became more comfortable in his new home.
After a few weeks of dedicated work, Smokey Bear no longer guarded his food bowl Mike could safely walk past Smokey while he was eating without any incidents.
By working on engagement and leash walking skills and incorporating daily sniffy walks, Smokey Bear's reactivity greatly improved. He started settling at home more easily and was able to ignore most dogs, people, and loud vehicles during walks Even during occasional reactive moments, Mike could easily redirect Smokey Bear and help him relax quickly.
The Happy Outcome
During a recent follow-up with Claire, it was evident that Smokey Bear is now living his best life. Mike and Smokey Bear have made an incredible journey together with the help of Toronto Humane Society’s Public Training and Behaviour program. They are now able to enjoy quiet time at home and many peaceful walks together
Join Our Training and Behaviour Classes
Smokey Bear's story is a testament to the transformative power of dedicated training and behaviour modification At Toronto Humane Society, we offer a variety of public training and behaviour classes designed to address the unique needs of each pet. From Strays to Superstars: The Journey of Trish Stratus and Her
Kittens
At Toronto Humane Society, every animal’s story i unique and heartwarming, showcasing the resilience and strength of animals and the unwavering dedication of our team and supporters And thanks to the support from ou dedicated team and supporters, 5 very preciou lives received the tender care, love, and suppor they needed. Here is Trish Stratus and her kitten’ story
Trish Stratus, a loving mother cat, and her fou kittens Jake the Snake, Macho Man, Mankind and Ultimate Warrior were brought to Toronto Humane Society under challenging circumstances The kittens arrived as neonates, tangled in dried
placenta, which led to injuries in three of them due to the entanglement of umbilical cords and placenta compromising the blood flow to their limbs. A few days later, Trish was brought in, completing the family.
Trish Stratus proved to be an exceptional mother She purred contentedly and seemed to enjoy interaction, showcasing her gentle nature. Trish fed her kittens well, requiring minimal supplementary feeding from their foster parent, even managing through the nights without
Trish Stratus and her kittens received the best possible care from our dedicated veterinary team. They were given vaccines and spay/neuter surgeries. Mankind’s injuries required amputation surgery but that never stopped this little kitten from moving and playing with the rest of his siblings.
After receiving excellent care and support, Trish Status and her kittens have been adopted into loving homes. This remarkable outcome was made possible by the tireless efforts of their foster parents, who provided around-the-clock care, our dedicated veterinary staff, and the generous support of our donors
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved Stories like Trish Stratus and her kittens remind us why our mission at Toronto Humane Society is so important. Your continued support allows us to care for and find loving homes for animals in need. Thank you for being a vital part of our community and helping us create more happy endings
Finding A Forever Home Through TikTok
Jace, a playful 8-month-old puppy with a big heart and an even bigger personality, was transferred to Toronto Humane Society from Six Nations along with a group of other puppies, on April 12th.
Despite his adorable appearance and playful nature, Jace faced challenges that led to him being overlooked for adoption. He had Cherry eye, a condition affecting the eyelid, and upon arrival at our shelter, he also tested positive for Whipworm, Coccidiosis, and Hookworm
Jace's luck began to change one Friday afternoon when our Social Media Specialist, Garine, embarked on her bi-weekly tour of the animals available for adoption on a TikTok live stream. As Garine showcased the adorable animals, someone in the audience expressed interest in Jace and requested more information about him
Quick to respond, Garine informed the viewer that Jace was still available for adoption and
encouraged them to visit our shelter at 11 River Street to speak to an adoption agent Little did she know, this simple interaction would change Jace's life forever.
Later that day, a young man and his mother visited Toronto Humane Society after seeing the TikTok live stream. Upon meeting Jace, they immediately fell in love with his playful demeanor and infectious energy Without hesitation, they decided to welcome Jace into their home and make him a part of their family.
Jace's adoption serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that social media can have in connecting animals in need with loving adopters. In a world where digital platforms play a significant role in our daily lives, leveraging social media to showcase animals like Jace can make all the difference in finding them the perfect forever home.
