A new and better paradigm is needed in Canadian health care. One that can meet growing demands of a rapidly changing society...
1
REHABILITATION IS THAT EMERGING PARADIGM! A growing body of research is validating the important role played by rehabilitation in contributing to improved health, improved living and improved lives. Studies show, rehabilitation is vital in successfully reintegrating patients into the community and the workforce, and in reducing mortality and morbidity. The effective use of rehabilitation services as part of disease management and clinical practice protocols is also contributing to shorter hospital stays, lower readmission rates, fewer visits to physician offices and emergency rooms, and reintegration into home and school. Our spectrum of rehabilitation care and research, from prevention to restoration to independent living, offers enormous potential to enhance patient outcomes and efficiency within the health-care system.
2
In 2015, the Toronto Rehab Foundation launched a bold $100-million fundraising campaign to awaken this emerging paradigm.
WHY?
ONE IN TWO CANADIANS WILL BE TOUCHED BY DISABILITY, either personally or through someone in their immediate family.
6
An estimated 1,000 CANADIANS ARE PERMANENTLY DISABLED EACH YEAR as a result of spinal cord injuries or diseases.
9
More than 50,000 CANADIANS WILL EXPERIENCE A STROKE THIS YEAR, AT A COST TO THE CANADIAN ECONOMY OF $3.6 BILLION in physician services, hospital costs, lost wages and decreased productivity.Â
As Canada’s leading academic research hospital, University Health Network (UHN) builds on the strengths and reputation of each of its programs to bring together the talent and resources needed to provide world-class care. UHN is home to the top rehabilitation research centre in the world: Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. Every day, the staff and researchers at Toronto Rehab are putting patients and people first. Philanthropy plays a vital role in providing the infrastructure that our clinicians and scientists need to turn their innovative ideas into home, community and hospital-based solutions. The incredible array of state-of-the-art services offered to patients and the extraordinary spectrum of research that Toronto Rehab conducts is translated into new technologies, therapies and products that play a pivotal role in improving health and empowering Canadians to live more independently and make better lifestyle decisions. The fundraising efforts of our Foundations are critical to ensuring UHN’s progress, development and success in delivering leading-edge care. In the years ahead, your contributions will be amply rewarded through Toronto Rehab’s impact on the health and well-being of all Canadians. Thank you, everyone, for your support and for helping to make incredible happen.

More questions to be answered, more patients to serve, more disabling injuries and illnesses to overcome and more problems to be solved. That is why Toronto Rehab has launched a historic $100-million fundraising campaign, representing the largest and most transformative rehabilitation appeal in Canadian history. We want to ensure that the best proven rehabilitation research, technology and care are available to our patients, and all Canadians, now and in the future. Toronto Rehab is moving from the most innovative rehabilitation hospital in the country, to one of the most important centres for the creation of medical advancements around the globe.
PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE:
To support our vision of emerging as a top tier rehabilitation teaching and research hospital, Toronto Rehab launched a Capital Campaign to redevelop the E. W. Bickle Centre for Complex Continuing Care, the Lyndhurst Centre for Spinal Cord Rehabilitation and the University Centre to accommodate future growth and provide a greatly enhanced patient and visitor experience. Together, we will build the best possible spaces for our clinicians, researchers, scientists and students to raise the bar of excellence in innovation and patient-centred care.
RESEARCH:
Toronto Rehab’s evolving excellence in rehabilitation medicine reflects a clear commitment to interdisciplinary learning opportunities in newly emerging fields of rehabilitation research. Research innovation, the heart of any leading teaching and research hospital, requires investments in program development to maximize the intellectual capital generated throughout the hospital. At Toronto Rehab, we know there are always more problems to be solved and more opportunities to prevent injury, restore function and help people lead more independent lives. So, in an effort to help combat some of Canada's leading concerns in mobility, aging and health, we have developed centres of excellence. As Toronto Rehab continues to evolve on the world's stage, these centres are essential to increasing the focus, intensity and outcomes of the research performed by our interdisciplinary staff community. We hope you will join with us as we continue to ask the toughest questions and find realistic, affordable solutions for all Canadians.
ENDOWED CHAIRS AND FELLOWSHIPS:

Exceptional researchers remain the bedrock of Toronto Rehab. With the support of individual and corporate partners, the endowed chairs and fellowships program will not only attract and retain internationally renowned researchers in a variety of disciplines, it will also strengthen Toronto Rehab’s core mission and enhance our competitive position and international visibility.
At Toronto Rehab, our community of researchers, clinicians, students and educators work together to optimize the three pillars of rehabilitation: prevention, restoration and independence. This collaboration is why Toronto Rehab is so successful in our field. But, with an aging population and a new set of complex health-care issues facing our nation, it’s time to think ahead.
BEST PRACTICE CLINICS:
At Toronto Rehab, bright minds are at work every day. Thanks to the close interactions between researchers and clinicians, we excel at bringing new discoveries in rehabilitation research and treatment to our patients as rapidly as possible. Clinical-Scientists take a unique, integrated approach that is essential to advancing science and medicine. The Clinician-Scientist Program (CSP) provides clinicians with the tools necessary to work as independent scientists in the field of rehabilitation science. There is nowhere quite as collaborative as Toronto Rehab. Our patients are benefitting each and every day from our research teams, labs and projects. This lab-to-patient approach attracts the finest scientific minds in the world to join our team. As a result, patients and physicians look to our clinics with confidence for state-of-the-art rehabilitation research and treatment. We need your support to stay at the forefront of research and patient care and provide best practice care to all Canadians who need our expertise.
EDUCATION AND SCHOLARSHIPS:
As a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto, Toronto Rehab trains the health-care providers of today and tomorrow. Toronto Rehab provides hands-on clinical training to more than 1,000 students each year, as well as training and support for new researchers. This makes it one of North America's largest research facilities specializing in rehabilitation science. Your investment in Toronto Rehab's Education and Scholarships program is an investment in the future. With your support, we will be able to increase our student enrollment and provide them with a higher quality of education, ultimately enhancing the quality of rehabilitative care for decades to come. With the growing demands of an aging society, the need to invest in our students is greater than ever. 27
I am proud to lead this Campaign and invest in Toronto Rehab, the World’s #1 Rehabilitation Research Centre and truly the place Where Incredible Happens. Advancing medical technology and supporting our aging population are among society’s most urgent and complex challenges. Producing advances in rehabilitation science to deliver innovative therapies and products requires ingenuity and expertise. Our $100-million Campaign is a pioneering investment in the essential work of building programs, spaces and research agendas that will transform countless lives by improving health, safety and independent living.
