The remarkable
José Carreras to play in Toruń One of the greatest tenors of all time will appear in Toruń during a concert taking place on July 31st. This one of a kind event will be a part of Toruń’s 777th anniversary celebration and will highlight such famous arias as “Brindisi” from the opera by Giuseppe Verdi, “La Traviata”, “Chitarra Romana”, and “Core n’grato”. The Spanish opera megastar will also give a duet performance with Justyna Steczkowska – Poland’s pop diva. Their version of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” is sure to bring the house down. Natalia Kovalowa, Ukrainian soprano, will be also featured during the show.

“The concert of José Carreras will prove that our European Capital of Culture aspirations have strong foundations” – explains Michał Zaleski, the President of Toruń. “As a result of this event the name Toruń will appear alongside such important centers of European culture as Berlin, Athens, Lisbon, Porto, London, Barcelona, Zadar, Zagreb and Sankt Petersburg, in which Carreras performed last year” – added Michał Zaleski. José Carreras, world opera star, performs at the most prestigious stages world-wide. He made his debut at the age of 11 on the stage of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. During his career he created outstanding performances in the operas by Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, and Richard Strauss. He is most famous for his Three Tenors concerts. The recording of the concert by Placido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti has become the best-selling record in the history of classical music.

Beautiful photographic exhibition, presenting all forms of art: theatre, music, painting and literature is promoting our region between the 7th and the 2st of July at the Berlaymont Commission building. The photos of young Polish artist Patryk Lewandowski are the best testimony of the cultural heritage of the cities from the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region: Toruń – the candidate city for the title of the European Capital of Culture – Chełmno, Włocławek and Grudziądz. The unique collage of photos is not only presenting the international events such as “Kontakt” Festival, the Music and Art Festival of Baltic Countries Probaltica but also shows the avant garde activities of the independent artists: poetic slam,

theatre workshops, billboard gallery. The photos reflect the unusual artistic climate of the atelier of different, well-known artists from our region such as the one of surrealist painter Zbigniew Stec or the atelier of Władysław Kozioł and Wojciech Kozioł, who make famous stained glass with the technique that has not changed since the Middle Ages.

San Fermín bonds Toruń and Pamplona together The joyful celebration of San Fermín held in honor of Saint Fermin, the co-patron of Navarre, bonds together Toruń and Pamplona – cities taking part in the European Capital of Culture 2016 bidding process. The historic agreement between two cities was made in 2008 at the EU Committee of the Regions headquarters in Brussels. The agreement provides guidelines for cultural cooperation and joint promotional activities. events – all take place in honor of the city’s patron – bishopmartyr Saint Fermin. The origins of this Spanish fete, happening between July 6th and 14th, date back to the XIVth century and commemorate the death of bishop Fermin. This is the reason for panuelos scarfs – one of the San Fermín’s symbols – being red, just like blood. During the fete Pamplona is full of tourists, all having fun in the streets, singing and dancing. Toruń’s vision of San Fermín brought the concert of a string quartet Quatuor Europe with Rene Mora, guitar virtuoso. The Leaning Tower of Toruń was the place where San Fermín festival has reached its end with an exciting samba show and the taste of Sangria wine.

Centre of science and technology in Toruń

“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” In Europe science centers that follow the motto of Confucius have been successfully operating for years. Their mission is to bring science closer to people and to increase awareness about its possibilities to improve our lives. In Poland it is a new trend, which Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region is more than happy to embrace. Toruń’s Science Centre will be opened in the building that in the past was a part of the industrial complex called the Rychter’s Mill. It was built from 1881 to the forties of the XX century. The building is impressive and its red brick construction blends perfectly with the Toruń’s gothic style.

The area of the Centre will be 5 square meters large and will have 7 floors. The exposition space will be centered around the 35 meters high Foucault’s Pendulum. The permanent exposition will compose of 100 interactive stands organized according to 5 themes: modernity, nature, idea, communication and children’s world. The joint theme will be called: A man and his interaction with the environment. The project is being financed by the European Regional Development Fund in the frame of Regional Operating Progamme 2007-2013 for Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region. In order to make the most of Toruń’s Science and Technology centre the local government of the Kujawsko Pomorskie region and the city of Toruń in June 2010 organized a trip of representatives of different regional institutions to the European Centers of Technology. The purpose was to learn on experience and expertise of the centers with tradition. The delegation visited Phaeno in Wolfsburg (Germany), Universum in Bremen (Germany), Klimahaus in Bremerhaven (Germany) and Technopolis in Mechelen (Belgium).

Artus Jazz Festival 2010 in Toruń From July 2nd till August 13th the beautiful gothic environment of Toruń hosts this year edition of Artus Jazz Festival. Concerts are taking place at the courtyard of the Old Town Hall which gives them a sense of something special. “Our goal is to satisfy musical tastes of our guests, people who want to listen to some good jazz” – said Bogumiła Przeperska of the Artus Court, festival’s organizer. The fourth edition of Artus Jazz festival begun with a concert by Paweł Kaczmarczyk and his Audiofeeling Band made of some top notch musicians. Joachim Mencel and Ania Szarmach are also featured during the festival.

In the picturesque scenery of the Lower Vistula Valley in Gruczno, the Festival of Taste is held annually. From 21st to 22nd August there will be the most important culinary event in Northern Poland. This is a unique opportunity to taste the regional dishes: honey, meats, wines, and liqueurs. During the festival there will be many competitions: Tincture, Honey, and Taste of the Year, Tournament of Cooks. The Festival of Taste is also a feast for the spirit. In one place you can listen to folk music, watch demonstrations of shepherd dogs, and cavalry maneuvers. There will also be a point of getting information about the region. This is the only event of its status in Poland.
