Our Mayor Welcomes You! Welcome to South San Francisco, we’re glad you’re here. While 2009 has been a year of many challenges given the lagging economy and the absence of a State budget, South San Francisco still has a lot on its plate. We are pleased to have Centennial Way, a bike path/linear parkway connecting the San Bruno BART station with the South San Francisco BART station completed along with our most popular new amenity, a dog park. We are pleased to have completed the South San Francisco portion of the Bay Trail this year. Thanks to South San Francisco Scavenger and HCP for their partnership in this endeavor! Other projects we are focused on include a new downtown parking garage due for completion in 2010, the El Camino Real General Plan Amendment and ongoing development east of 101 by SKS. South San Francisco has a long time commitment to ensuring our city is an enjoyable place to live, work and play. We enjoy working with the Chamber of Commerce to promote a strong economic base that benefits all of us. As you look at our history, you will find one of hard work, cooperation and a willingness to explore and embrace new ideas. Welcome to South San Francisco! While we anticipate the need to continue dealing with a stagnant economy, 2010 will see many projects coming to fruition. We will open a new Emergency Operations Center and staff continues to complete work on the General Plan Update. We are also excited about the renovations/expansions taking place at Bronstein’s Music, Buon Gusto Restaurant and DiNapoli’s in partnership with our Redevelopment Agency. These projects along with the completion of our downtown parking garage later this year should bring increased activity to the downtown business community. South San Francisco has a long history of working together to meet the needs of our local businesses and our residents. Our partnership with the Chamber of Commerce has been and will continue to be an asset to us all. This year I look forward to working with the Chamber and the local business community to focus on creating and keeping jobs. September Bocce Ball Tournament
You don’t have to be Italian to play Bocce! This game has been gaining popularity throughout the US in recent years. League or tournament play has 4 players on each team. A social game can be played between two teams with 1 to 4 players on each team. The object of the game of Bocce is for one team to get as many of their balls closer to the “pallino” than any of the opponent’s balls. This event is held at the Bocce Ball Courts in Orange Park, courtesy of the Italian American Citizens Club.
November Taste of South San Francisco
Local restaurants, delicatessens, and bakeries provide their special dishes and desserts for this event. It is held at the South San Francisco Conference Center.
December Santa Comes to Town
The First Saturday in December, Santa arrives on a fire truck at the steps of City hall. Children have the opportunity to take free pictures with Santa and receive a toy.

General Chamber Information The Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit corporation solely supported by its membership, the City of South San Francisco and activities that it sponsors. Members include business owners, managers and professionals. Members invest in the organization to support group efforts to make South San Francisco a better place to do business. The Chamber is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors and holds monthly meetings to set policy and direction for the organization. A Chief Executive Officer oversees office operation which includes full-time and part-time staff. The Chamber makes referrals, acts as a resource for community information, provides informational pamphlets and brochures about starting a business, offers free SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives) counseling to business entrepreneurs and has marketing material available to help the sales professionals.

2008 Mayor’s Award: La Tapatia Mr.Eduardo Haro, Mr. Humberto Campos and Mr. Rolando Conde, opened La Tapatia Delicatessen and Tortilla Factory for business in South San Francisco, in November 1976. Known far and wide as an excellent Mexican Delicatessen, you will almost always find a line at the counter. Their generosity within the community is extensive. All Souls Church and the Hermanos Program at Skyline College are two groups they are particularly fond of supporting, although they have also benefited numerous other community groups with their donations. La Tapatia has received many awards for their contributions to the community. They are mostly proud of having being recognized by the Sister City Committee in 1994 between South San Francisco and Jalisco Mexico. From the United States Department of Agriculture they received a Certificate of Appreciation for the Hispanic Heritage Month in 2001. A Certificate of Appreciation from the Sociedad Mutualista Mexicana Morelos of South San Francisco in 1992, and in 1995 from All Souls Church Equipo de Servicio Hispano.Â

Welcome to Our City History of SSF The early history of South San Francisco parallels that of the rest of California. The Ohlone Indians inhabited this area before it came under Spanish and later Mexican rule. This particular area was known as Rancho Buri Buri. Between 1856 and 1892, portions of the Rancho were purchased by cattle barons Miller and Lux who formed the town of Baden, and a group of Chicago businessmen, led by Gustavus Swift, who formed the town of South San Francisco. Swift also created the South San Francisco Land Improvement Company which in turn was the driving force for, and the economic support behind, the 1908 merger and incorporation of these two areas as the City of South San Francisco. At the time of incorporation, the population totaled 1,989 and there were 14 major industries in SSF. The city continued to grow and flourish with companies such as Bethlehem Steel, U.S. Steel, W.P. Fuller and Swift and Co. among many others. During the 1920’s, City Hall was built to house all City offices including the Police and Fire Departments and the “South San Francisco, the Industrial City” sign was installed on Sign Hill through the work of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1949, the City Manager/City Council form of government was adopted and under this leadership, the city expanded with the addition of the Oyster Point Marina, housing developments on the slopes west of El Camino and the creation of the Industrial Park by the Utah Construction Company. The population also continued to grow while maintaining the diversity that had always existed in the area.

As heavy industry moved out of the area, it was replaced by light industry and hotels serving the San Francisco International Airport. In 1976, Herb Boyer and Bob Swanson founded Genentech in order to explore ways of using recombinant DNA technology to create breakthrough medicines. This was the beginning of the biotech industry and earned SSF the title of “Birthplace of Biotechnology”. Since that time, many other biotech firms as well as large development projects such as The Gateway, Oyster Point Business Park and Bay West Cove have moved into the area. The residential areas have also continued to grow and prosper with new housing developments, parks, green areas, public art and a host of City services and community organizations such as North Peninsula Neighborhood Services Center, the SSF Health Center and many others. The SSF Conference Center opened in April 1993 to serve local businesses, visitors and residents. The Chamber has played an important role throughout the history of SSF and will continue to support local businesses and work to improve the community we work and live in.

Public Transportation The City has completed a signal coordination study along Oyster Point Boulevard, East Grand Avenue and Airport Boulevard. After it is implemented in late July 2009, travel times along these corridors will improve significantly. In addition, the City is undertaking a study to improve 22 intersections and streets in the East of 101 Area to relieve traffic congestion and accommodate anticipated R&D growth to the year 2020. Significant improvements are also planned, underway or have been completed for the area west of Highway 101. Below is a list of transportation services available now and some that are planned for the near future throughout the City: ›› Centennial Way (Linear Park & bike path) – Centennial Way bisects the City and is a Class I/II continuous bicycle and pedestrian path that extends for 3 miles between the South San Francisco and San Bruno BART stations. Safe crossings, including an in-ground lighted crosswalk, were installed where the pathway crosses City streets. It serves as a centralized spine, protected from traffic, with connecting arteries to schools, neighborhoods, parks and businesses. As you walk or bicycle down Centennial Way, you are surrounded by blooming flowers, wild grasses and sights of historical Sign Hill. No one was left out when Centennial Way was planned, including dog lovers. The linear park includes a dog park near Orange Memorial Park at West Orange Avenue. Along the trail, people are treated visually by beautiful lighting fixtures and site furnishings, as well as plaza areas with interesting features. ›› Shuttle Service – The City has the largest shuttle system on the San Francisco Peninsula linking BART and Caltrain to employers in the East of 101 area. The shuttle service is managed by the Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance. ›› SSF BART Station – BART has provided a great opportunity to link commuters from the East Bay to the Peninsula. ›› SSF Caltrain Station – South San Francisco’s current train station is located near Highway 101. The City is working with the Joint Powers Board to relocate and modernize the Caltrain Station to make it more convenient for employees in the East of 101 Area and residents near Downtown. ›› Water Transit – Ground was broken for the South San Francisco Ferry Terminal in October of 2009. When operating, the ferry service will operate between Oakland’s Jack London Square and South San Francisco’s Oyster Point Marina – the trip is expected to take approximately 25 minutes. Initial projections indicate that the ferry service will serve 700 daily riders, which will make the ferry an excellent alternative mode of public transportation for employees commuting to South San Francisco. Ferry terminal operations are expected to begin by mid-2011. ›› In 2008, the City adopted its Traffic Calming Program as a means to educate the public regarding traffic calming issues and methods, defining a process for handling traffic concerns, and providing a basis for prioritizing traffic calming projects.

Welcome to Our City Quality of Life The presence of nearby areas for recreation enriches quality of life by providing opportunities for outdoor activity and socialization. The City’s parks contribute to physical and psychological health. Community events such as art fairs, Farmers Markets, Halloween parades, and concerts in the park foster social and cultural enrichment and bring people together to build a sense of local community. Many city-wide events are offered during the year by the City, such as Day in the Park, the Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Extravaganza, Santa Comes to Town, the Fun Run, Youth Government Day, Arbor Day, Coastal Clean Up Day, and many more. In 2008 the city opened the “green” Joseph A Fernekes recreation building as an additional benefit to our City residents and visitors. The City’s Sculpture Garden showcases public art which defines safeguards and celebrates public space and the identity of the community. Public art beautifies and enhances the landscape. South San Francisco recognizes that childcare also enhances the quality of life in the community and has constructed a childcare facility in the City. South San Francisco is very unique in offering an Adult Day Care program to serve frail adults in need of assistance during the day. This provides respite so that care givers can work, and offers families another option to institutional care;
Bay Trail South San Francisco is extremely fortunate to have nearly seven miles of beautiful shoreline along the San Francisco Bay, and has planned for the improvement of this area in connection with the overall regional Bay Trail project. In October 2009, the City achieved its goal of having a continuous multi-use trail completed along the entire length. South San Francisco Scavenger and HCP brought this project to completion.
Retail South San Francisco is well served by 12 neighborhood and convenience retail centers. Currently, most viable neighborhood retail centers are in the size range of 100,000 to 200,000 square feet, anchored by supermarkets and often a drug store, and provide convenience goods and personal services. Recently, several regional retailers have either located or expanded in South San Francisco, such as a new Trader Joe’s specialty grocery store on McLellan Drive and Lowes on Dubuque Avenue. South San Francisco is currently conducting two studies along the El Camino Real. The Chestnut /El Camino Real Specific Plan envisions new commercial and residential uses. While the South El Camino Real study will promote commercial / residential mixed-use developments by providing design guidelines. Both these studies will ensure a vibrant retail future for one of the major thoroughfares in South San Francisco.

Welcome to Our City Hotels When visiting the San Francisco Bay Area, out of town guests have easy access to a wide range of accommodations to meet the needs of any event, conference, convention or meetings. South San Francisco hotels provide more than 3,000 guest rooms, from economy to deluxe.
Downtown Parking Garage The City’s downtown parking garage is currently under construction. The parking structure consists of a five level open-air concrete parking structure building and will meet the current ADA and UBC standards. There will be 254 parking stalls and approximately 14,350 square feet of commercial and office space on the ground floor. This will be the City of South San Francisco’s first city-owned parking structure and will include various “green” construction elements. Construction will take approximately 14 months to complete. The construction will use fly ash in the concrete mix, install energy efficient lighting and install geothermal loops for efficient cooling of the retail spaces. Traffic control devices will be installed along Miller Avenue and Fourth Lane for the safety of vehicles and residents during construction of the parking structure.
Downtown Enhancements Funding for Phase One of the Downtown Enhancement Strategy was passed by the City Council on May 14, 2008. This project will help beautify the downtown and attract more visitors to the businesses in the area. Phase one improvements includes consolidated newspaper stands, Historic markers, tables and chairs, benches and trash cans. Other enhancements such as flower planters, hanging baskets and banners will be added contingent on organized support from the downtown merchants.

Airport Museum Program Rotating Exhibitions The San Francisco Airport Museum Program features galleries throughout the terminals many are located pre-security and accessible to the public. The galleries display art, history, science, and cultural rotating exhibitions. Subject matter and content is balanced to address the interests of the diverse public audience served by the Airport. San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library & Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum Dedicated to commercial aviation and SFO’s role as the “Gateway to the Pacific”, this 11,500 square foot facility is modeled after the passenger waiting area from the Airport’s own 1937 terminal that no longer exists. Admission is free of charge. Both the museum exhibition and the 6,000 volume library are available to visitors Sunday through Friday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Closed Saturdays and holidays. Dr. Howard Cohen, Superintendent of Schools Welcome to all students, parents, teachers, staff, and community members to the 2009-2010 school year. I am honored to have been chosen as Superintendent to serve the South San Francisco Unified School District. South San Francisco schools have a very rich and deep history of community pride and engagement. I have had the opportunity to meet many teachers, staff, administrators and South San Francisco City Officials who attended South San Francisco schools and have returned to provide service to their home community. I am fond of saying that South San Francisco is the biggest small town I have had the privilege to serve. I have had the opportunity to visit all South San Francisco Unified School District school sites and many classrooms since the beginning of the school year and I find the students to be respectful, studious and highly motivated to learn. Our teachers are engaged with their classes and have been hard at work since the opening of our schools. South San Francisco Unified School District administrators are highly dedicated and committed to their schools. I find that school and district staff members are friendly, hard working and service oriented. My commitment to you is to build upon the successes that the South San Francisco Unified School District, the Board of Trustees and the staff have created; working with parents, community and employees to do all we can to prepare students to be successful. As wonderful and effective as our past has been, we have much hard work ahead of us in order to meet and exceed the challenges faced by our students, staff, parents and community. Our District is in Year 2 of not making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). The AYP is how the Federal Government measures the number of our students who are scoring Proficient or Advanced on the annual California Standards Test. The data shows that all of our schools are challenged, in particular, with meeting the learning needs of English Learners, Special Education students, and students considered to be in the low socio-economic class. Thirty percent of all South San Francisco Unified School District students are scoring below Proficient in the Basic category. This means we, as a District, have to improve learning for all of our students, regardless of ethnicity or income level. We have work to do. We have to eliminate the achievement gap for the above mentioned groups of students and raise the bar so that each and every South San Francisco Unified School District student is prepared for college, if they so choose, and prepared to begin a productive work-life as they continue to learn throughout their lives. We want every South San Francisco Unified School District student to have high level choices in their lives and to be prepared for work in the 21st century. I look forward to working with students, staff, parents and community as we create a Strategic Plan this school year (stay tuned for notification) and as we continue to provide district-wide researched-based practices known to be effective in improving teaching and learning for our students. The South San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education has been very proactive in strongly supporting the use of school and classroom-based student performance data, direct service for improving English Language Learning, and for focused improvement in the South San Francisco Unified School District instructional program. Toward this end, we welcome two staff members who will work primarily supporting schools and classrooms. David Laird is the Director of Student Performance, Program Evaluation and

Outreach to Educators Instructional Intervention (Assessment and Accountability) and Adolfo Melara is the new Assistant Superintendent for English Learner Services and Student Learning Support. Both staff members come with strong backgrounds. David has been with the District since October 2008 and has a doctoral degree in education and has a strong background in data analysis and instructional improvement. He was formerly the Senior Research Analyst for the Boston Public Schools and provided instructional support for the 143 schools in that district. Adolfo comes from the Stockton Unified School District where he served as Director of Elementary Education and Program Improvement. Adolfo, bilingual in English and Spanish, worked with twenty-four Program Improvement schools and was a key liaison with the Spanish speaking parents and community. We have much to do. I find the work ahead challenging and exhilarating. South San Francisco Unified School District Board of Trustees and staff are very responsive and eager to meet the challenges ahead. We look forward to engaging with all parents and community members in the South San Francisco Unified School District as we work together improving learning for all students.
Last year, the City established a pro-active relationship with the State of California Community College System (workforce training for biotechnology companies) to begin to introduce science and math education to local residents and schools. To date, the City and the Applied Bioscience Program for the Community College System has sponsored several workshops and career fairs. The workshops are meant to introduce workforce training and skills development strategies to interested residents, students and teachers, unemployed workers, and employees in the biotech industry. We are working closely with the School District and Skyline College to create a new biotech program curriculum that will encourage residents and students to find a career in the life-sciences industry and in-service training programs to help teachers learn state-of-the-art technology.

Library Services The South San Francisco Public Library is more than just books; we offer a variety of services and collections in 3 locations to meet the educational, recreational and informational needs of the diverse community of South San Francisco. In addition to thousands of great books, the Main and Grand Avenue Branch Libraries offer the use of computers with internet access, Microsoft Word and Excel, wireless internet access, subscription databases, audio books, DVD’s, CD’s and children’s CD ROMs. The Grand Avenue Library offers a large collection of Spanish language materials and a substantial local history collection with photographs, newspapers, yearbooks and many other documents. The members of this primarily Latino area asked for English and computer classes and homework assistance to help them succeed in the community. The City responded by creating the Community Learning Center. serving children and adults. What began as a dream has grown into an important and valued community resource. The Community Learning Center’s unique approach and accomplishments have been recognized with top awards by the South San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, KQED, San Mateo County Reading Association and the San Mateo County Children’s Initiative.

South San Francisco Real Estate Emerging Downtown Strategies South San Francisco has a traditional downtown that has not changed dramatically since the 1950s. Downtown South San Francisco currently serves as a neighborhood retail center, but has the potential to be a regional center. The downtown has a charming character and architecture that is characterized by activities such as civic functions, and residential and commercial activities. The City is working closely with the business community to create a pedestrian-friendly mixed-use activity center with retail and visitor-oriented uses, business and personal services, government and professional offices, civic uses, and a variety of residential types and densities. The current improvement projects include: ›› Implementation of the new Downtown Streetscape Improvements for Grand Avenue, including new “historical themed” benches, planters, murals, entry sign, newspaper racks, and a historical clock. ›› A new “historically-themed” Downtown parking structure that will replace aging surface parking lots, completion in 2010. ›› Plans to construct a new mid-rise market rate residential condominium at 418 Linden Avenue. ›› Construction of the Oak Avenue Apartments affordable housing project on Grand Avenue and Oak Avenue. The City has also approved a long-term strategic plan that would also enhance linkages between Downtown and transit centers, add new residential projects to support commercial businesses, and increase street connectivity with the surrounding neighborhoods. The Plan includes: ›› Caltrain Station Improvements: New pedestrian plaza, pedestrian tunnel, improved boarding areas, shuttle stop and bus pick-up and drop-off area, and retail/commercial space. ›› Redevelopment Projects on the 200-block of Baden and Grand Avenues: The Redevelopment Agency has purchased several properties on Baden Avenue to redevelop for a future mixed-use project. Improvements would include new pedestrian walkways, plazas, new commercial/retail space, office space and market rate residential units. ›› Potential High-Rise Residential Tower: The city is working with a development team to develop a mixed-use residential high-rise tower at the corner of Baden Avenue.

South San Francisco Real Estate El Camino Real: The Grand Boulevard The City is reviewing plans to transform El Camino Real into the “Grand Boulevard” that accommodates both its role as a regional corridor and a destination node for residents. The City has developed the South San Francisco BART station area as a vital pedestrian-oriented center, with intensity and mix of uses that complement the area’s new role as a regional center. Following the example of the Transit Village, the new General Plan Amendment would encourage development of a mix of uses, with pockets of concentrated activity that provide focus and identity to the different parts of El Camino Real. The current projects include: ›› The new Transit Village Plan in 2002. ›› The Transit Village Plan calls for high-density housing and retail uses near the South San Francisco BART Station. ›› Nearly 500 new residential units have been constructed next to the SSF BART Station since 2005, including Park Station and Archstone.
Additionally, the City envisions the construction of over 200,000 square feet of new retail commercial space and up to 2,000 new residential units along the El Camino Real Corridor by 2035. In order to accommodate the potential growth, the City is expanding the Transit Village Plan area to include another 55 acres, which will see new high-density residential projects, commercial-retail space, and new civil uses.
Long-Term R&D Building Boom Three decades ago, industry leader Genentech, Inc. began operations in South San Francisco with 2,000 square feet of space and four employees. Today, the city has nearly 13,000 biotechnology-related employees working for over 70 life-science companies. While over six million square feet of laboratory, office and manufacturing space are already in operation, South San Francisco is currently planning for another three million square feet of life-science related development in the next ten years. Since 1999, the City has approved nine major life sciences campuses, with over 6.2 million square feet on over 500 acres of industrial land. Despite the current economic recession, the city is still receiving development applications, totaling nearly 3 million square feet, for future life science facilities and campuses. The following table summarizes the key development activity and phasing on the existing and future campuses.

South San Francisco Real Estate Supportive City Services & Investment Expansion of biotechnology companies in SSF has been uniquely aided by the well-defined zone of industrial and commercial activity in the city, offering room for biotechnology companies to build and expand facilities without encroaching on residential areas. South San Francisco has invested over 250 million dollars to build public improvements that improve both the business climate and the quality of life for all residents and employees. This investment includes the new Centennial Park and bike path, Sister Cities Park, the Orange Memorial Park expansion, the San Francisco Bay Trail, new pump stations and sewer facilities, expanded water treatment facility, new streets, the Oyster Point Overpass and hook ramps, the future ferry terminal, and the future Caltrain Station improvements. South San Francisco is also the originator of the biotechnology One-Stop Permitting Process that continues to streamline approvals of costly building and renovations needed by this researchintensive industry. The Permit Center’s purpose is to make it easier for everyone to request permits. We have combined four Divisions into one building location: Building, Engineering, Fire Prevention, and Planning to make the permit process flow much quicker.

South San Francisco Real Estate Housing The City of South San Francisco offers a wide variety of housing — apartments, condominiums, townhouses and single-family homes. A home can be found to meet the needs of nearly every lifestyle. The downtown area features older homes, many having been built when the City was founded. Luxury townhouses, condominiums and apartments are located at the foot of San Bruno Mountain and near transportation corridors. Many families find a comfortable home in the hills west of El Camino. In 2001 the City of South San Francisco passed an Inclusionary Housing Ordinance to help ensure the availability of affordable housing. This Ordinance requires that 20% of all new developments be affordable to families earning between $56,560 and $114,000 annually. Business in South San Francisco Industrial Base Bioscience South San Francisco’s economy was historically based upon manufacturing and processing industries, many of which slowly gave way to warehousing and distribution businesses. The City’se industrial area remains active and attractive due to its proximity to the San Francisco International Airport. Growth has focused on the information-based economy, as more high-technology and service firms have located to the eastern portion of the city. With Genentech serving as a major high-technology/biotechnology anchor in East of 101, a significant cluster of bio-technology establishments exists today. The ability of the City to attract uses that generate economic benefits depends on maintaining a positive business climate and availability of land, particularly sites suited to the needs of large office or research and development campuses, or regional-scaled commercial centers. The number of bioscience companies in South San Francisco has more than tripled in the past ten years – from 20 firms in 1995 to 51 in 2000, to over 80 firms today. There are currently more than 15,000 men and women working for bioscience companies in South San Francisco, up from 7,000 employees in 2000 The number of employees at these firms is expected to increase significantly in the next ten years. More than 80% of companies surveyed plan significant workforce expansion over the next two years, with the typical firm planning to add 50 or more employees. Genentech alone will add 6,000 employees in SSF by 2016. . South San Francisco is expected to gain hundreds of jobs primarily due to the recent acquisition of Genentech by Roche, a Swiss drug making company. As green initiatives in South San Francisco continue to be developed, a new industry in solar and cleantech companies is rising. Recently in 2009 Solazyme, a synthetic biology company that creates clean solutions for renewable energy has come to South San Francisco and was recognized as a “Bay Area Green Business” by the Business Times in June.

The Biotech Capital of the World The Beginning – Genentech Thirty years ago, Herb Boyer and Bob Swanson had the incredible insight, bold genius, and unwavering commitment to start a different kind of company based on the belief that DNA technology would produce commercially viable, breakthrough medicines. On April 7th, 1976, the two founded Genentech in a semi vacant warehouse in South San Francisco, and in doing so, launched the biotech industry. Today, Genentech is among the world’s leading biotech companies, marketing and manufacturing nine protein-based products for serious life-threatening medical conditions, Genentech is using human genetic information to discover, develop, manufacture, and market pharmaceuticals that address significant unmet medical needs. Today, Genentech markets and manufactures 12 plus products in the United States. During the last two decades, these medicines have been used to successfully treat more than one million oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, and growth hormone patients worldwide. Currently, Genentech has 30 projects under way in its development pipeline including treatments for asthma and allergic rhinitis, non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, acute heart failure and psoriasis. Genentech employs 8,600 people; 6,000 in South San Francisco and continues to expand its employees base and campus. Its 450 scientists are among the top in their field, publishing 250 to 275 papers annually.
Expansion Since the beginning of Genentech, biotech has grown steadily in South San Francisco with over 72 biotech firms in a 2-square-mile industrial zone. The city’s biopharmaceutical community has also diversified to encompass a wide spectrum of bioscience related activities. This process of expansion has been aided and encouraged by the presence of companies like Elan Pharmaceuticals, Amgen, Cell Genesys, Theravance, Cytokinetics, Rigel, and many more.

Business in South San Francisco South San Francisco Conference Center & Meeting Rooms Located one mile north of San Francisco International Airport, 15 minutes from San Francisco, and five minutes south of Monster Park, The South San Francisco Conference Center is just east of Highway 101. The Conference Center offers a full service, state-of-the-art facility with 20,500 square feet of meeting and banquet space. It is ideally suited for board meetings, conferences, conventions, trade shows, and banquets. The Center has a glass- encased 4-story atrium lobby with a dramatic free form floating ceiling that provides 2,700 square feet of pre-function space flooded with light. Another 3,600 square feet of pre-function space wraps around the ballroom. The 13,400 square foot Grand Ballroom can be divided into as many as six different sound-insulated rooms, while the 3,000 square foot Baden Room can be divided in half. The new Oyster Point Room adds an additional 4,000 square feet of meeting space. The Conference Center works closely with the neighboring hotels, which offer 3,000 guestroom accommodations. City-Wide Events for 2010 Day in the Park This annual event, initiated in 1997, continues to expand and grow in popularity. Held the 3rd Saturday in September, in 2010 it will be held on September 18th. From 10:00 am to 4:00 pm a festival is held at Orange Memorial Park. Drawing an estimated crowd of 10,000 visitors, features include over 200 booths representing local businesses, non-profits, government agencies, schools, senior and youth groups, clubs, sports groups, crafters, and a host of others. Service clubs raise funds by selling delicious food, drink, and snack items throughout the day. The event includes a classic car show, an entertainment stage for young performers, public safety demonstrations, bouncy houses and face painting for children, and a host of other activities. Centennial Way and Centennial Way Dog Park Centennial Way, a 2.85 mile linear park constructed on top of the BART tube, was completed in May, 2009. The linear park is anchored by the South San Francisco and San Bruno BART Stations at each end. Separated from automobile traffic, the Class 1 trail creates a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly green belt that runs through the city like a spine, passing by several schools, through many neighborhoods, and adjacent to the flagship Orange Memorial Park. Safe intersections were designed where the path crosses streets, with enhanced plazas to denote entry points. Amenities include interpretive signage, kiosks with maps and way-finding information, benches, lighting, irrigation, landscape, trash receptacles, hundreds of trees, and a 1.7 acre dog park, complete with separate areas for large and small dogs, and a 10’ by 16’ foot dog sculpture. The Dog Park is located off of West Orange Avenue at the end of Memorial Drive. Ample parking is available at the Orange Memorial Park, immediately adjacent to the dog park. Centennial Way trail can be accessed just north of Tanforan at Huntington; Spruce Avenue east of Huntington; Orange Avenue at Memorial Drive; Chestnut Avenue at Antoinette; Mission Road at Oak; and just south of the South San Francisco BART Station at BART Drive. Look for the brown and blue kiosks at each entrance node that identify the trail. In addition to Centennial Way, the Bay Front Trail, hiking trails on Sign Hill, and a variety of other walking paths can be found in South San Francisco, and have been mapped on a Walking Guide, available on line or through the Parks and Recreation Department. Fernekes Recreation Building South San Francisco’s 21 acre central park offers a variety of amenities to the public, including a sculpture garden; five (5) lighted, well-maintained tennis courts; basketball courts; bocce ball courts; an indoor swimming pool; a picnic shelter and picnic areas that may be reserved for group use; two (2) baseball fields; soccer field; two (2) playgrounds; artist studios; pedestrian pathways; and the award-winning Joseph A. Orange Memorial Swimming Pool A well-maintained indoor municipal pool with large windows on two sides that afford a view of Orange Memorial Park, this facility offers adult lap swim, family recreation times, water therapy, swim lessons, and private pool rentals. Attractions & Events Orange Memorial Park Sculpture Garden Winner of the California Parks and Recreation Society’s prestigious Award of Excellence in park planning, this garden is a little-known gem located in the city’s flagship park. It is located in front of the tennis courts on Tennis Drive. The garden was designed specifically as a showcase for sculpture. A combination of pieces that were purchased as part of a permanent collection, including Safehaven by Jane DeDecker, Obelisk by Bruce Gueswel, and Stone Horizon by Bruce Beasley, as well as pieces on temporary exhibit through a “loan art” program, the Sculpture Garden is a dynamic outdoor gallery that is well worth a visit. Public Art Sites in South San Francisco Many wonderful pieces of art have been installed in public places in recent years that represent a variety of media and artistic styles. The City’s collection includes: a series of tromp l”oeil paintings by artist John Pugh tucked away in the downtown “Breezeway” in the 300 block of Grand Avenue next to Starbuck’s Coffee entitled The Doors of Avignon; a large stainless steel sculpture entitled Millennium by James Russell located at the intersection of Junipero Serra Boulevard and Westborough Boulevard; and a 92 foot restored icon on a hilltop park on Grandview Drive near Genentech called the Windharp. South San Francisco/San Bruno Water Quality Control Plant Have you ever wondered what happens to our wastewater? Well, if you are a resident of South San Francisco, San Bruno, or Colma, your wastewater flows to the South San Francisco/San Bruno Water Quality Control Plant. The Plant is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The Plant occupies approximately twenty acres and treats an average of ten million gallons per day. Treatment processes consist of: screening, grit removal, chemical addition to aid settling of solids, primary settling, aeration, clarification, disinfection and removal of chlorine prior to discharge. Treated water is pumped into San Francisco Bay via a submerged discharge line east of Point San Bruno. The facility also provides dechlorination for cities of Burlingame, Millbrae, and the San Francisco International Airport, prior to discharging their treated wastewater into San Francisco Bay. The plant is located just north of the San Francisco International Airport on Belle Air Road.
