CEO’S MESSAGE Let’s maintain a “spirit of firsts”

Christian des Closières, CEO

THE “AAA CHALLENGE” HAS FOUR CATEGORIES: Growth Performance & profitability Visibility Agility

In recent history, Total South Africa has been setting benchmarks in the industry, making us a company of firsts in the energy sector. Since Total’s formation in South Africa, we have been recognised for our operational excellence and our ability to innovate and adapt to our markets. This could only be achieved by the fuel that keeps the engine of Total running – its people. We attract the best talent and we strive to create an enabling culture that fosters employee pride in belonging to Total. As we journey on “From Good to Great, Together” as part of our AAA roadmap of AMO, I want to encourage you to keep the “spirit of firsts” going. The three A’s (Accelerate, Agility and Audacious) are critical to the way we do business. I therefore want us to approach the AAA roadmap with a winning attitude. The aim of the

contents

roadmap is to transform AMO and accelerate its growth, both in terms of business development and other critical areas such as safety, supply chain, innovation, communications and talent management. For this new year, an AAA challenge has been created with four categories, namely: growth, performance & profitability, visibility and agility. This allows us a greater chance as

us to take a closer look at Agility and see how we can accelerate our growth. Agility calls us to be able to proactively identify opportunities and clearly understand the potential available to us. This means that we need to be efficient, effective and consistently seeking ways to be innovative. Agility prompts us to collectively put forth innovative ideas in a way that they will have an impact on the business, thus realising our target of

I want us to approach the AAA roadmap and AMO challenges with a winning attitude an affiliate to participate and showcase our knowhow. If we perform at our best in the categories as indicated already in our key initiatives, we can not only win the challenge, but also reach a milestone in our journey, “From Good to Great, Together”. As we transform Total South Africa, I would like

sustainable shareholder value. We need to be cognisant that the world is changing rapidly, and for us to remain relevant, the need to innovate and create is greater than ever. So for us to win the challenge, let us work as a collective, realise our interdependence and maintain a winning attitude.

Total South Africa has enjoyed a strong partnership with South African National Parks for many decades; this ensures that we continue to play a significant role in the preservation of our natural heritage. The annual Keep the Kruger Clean campaign was held in June to help raise awareness about the dangers of littering in the park. See on page 8 and 9 how the local community, park staff and learners joined forces in the clean-up this year. In his opening message in this issue, Mr des Closières talks about Agility and how we need to put forth innovative ideas that will have a positive impact on our business. Industry NEWS Stay in-the-know on industry developments with oil and gas updates from around the globe

Wiki-Solar, a leading authority on the use of utility-scale solar power, has ranked South Africa among the top 10 countries harnessing renewable energy from the sun. SA now has 15 solar plants connected to the national grid, with four large-scale solar plants having gone online recently, making up part of the first round of SA’s independent power producer procurement programme for renewable energy. A 2003 White Paper on Renewable Energy in South Africa set the target of 10 000 gigawatt hours to be produced by 2013 from renewable energy sources (mostly wind, solar, biomass and hydropower). According to figures released by government earlier this year, SA’s renewable energy programme has already attracted more than R150 billion in foreign investment.

02 POLLUTION COURT BATTLE Petrochemicals heavyweight, Sasol, is taking government to court in an attempt to have strict new air pollution laws scrapped. If Sasol wins, critics say it will set SA back 20 years in attempts to reduce toxic emissions. Sasol has argued that some new emissions standards are unlawful and that installing some of the equipment to clean up emissions requires long lead times, while the installation of other types of equipment would not be “reasonable or feasible in the South African context”. According to Earthlife Africa, Sasol’s challenge places the entire new set of air pollution laws under threat. “We’ve worked out that it would cost Sasol R25 billion to comply. Last year Sasol made a profit of R40 billion,” says Tristen Taylor of Earthlife Africa, adding that “Sasol will comply in the US but are happy to keep polluting Africa.” Sasol spokesperson Alex Anderson commented that Sasol has proposed to implement its own emission limits, based on an independent report.

03

GIVING IT GAS

According to South Africa’s Gas Utilisation Master Plan (GUMP), Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) and Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), gas is not only a favourable alternative energy source to coal, but could also become a major part of SA’s energy mix. The IEP reports that gas currently makes up an estimated 3% of the country’s total energy mix. Government’s National Development Plan (NDP) highlights the need for

4-5_NEW Industry update.indd 4

the diversification of SA’s energy production mix, the mitigation of the effects of climate change and the investigation of gas as an a energy source.Experts warn, however, that gas would need to be used as a complement to other energy sources and not in isolation, in order to avoid delays in the development of gas as an energy resource. The Department of Energy suggests that SA’s gas supply could at first require imports, which would likely come from Mozambique, Namibia and Botswana.

BRIDGING THE SKILLS GAP

SA is poised to become a major hub in the oil and gas industry in Africa, but faces a serious skills shortage, particularly at middle management and executive levels. Africa contributes about 11% of the global supply of crude oil and 6% of the world’s gas. A report released last year by PwC describes Africa as “the last true oil and gas frontier”. More than 4200 oil and gas blocks have

been identified on the continent. Major gas discoveries have been made in Mozambique and Tanzania, with exploration underway in Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan and Malawi. In SA, exploration is set to commence off the KZN coast, in the Karoo and in the Saldhana and Mossel Bay regions. To properly seize this opportunity, South African universities need

Companies in the industry can contribute significantly by offering mentorship programmes to upskill young people. Government also has a vital role to play by allowing foreign skilled management professionals into SA, to eventually transfer skills to local employees.

by announcing its funding of the second phase of the programme, until 2016. In partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education, Total South Africa brings Move-It, Moving Matters® to schools across Soweto.

THE BASICS The Move-It, Moving Matters® programme has been designed to

systematically grow and develop learners’ motor skills during the intermediate development phase (grades 4 to 7). The programme’s special challenges inspire active engagement and encourage all learners to participate in regular physical activity and understand the value of an active life. With a strong emphasis on the

development of complex movement patterns like balance, locomotion and muscle manipulation, the programme aims to help learners get the fundamentals right.

THE BENEFITS Approximately 25 000 learners across the country already benefit from the initiative – and with Total South Africa’s continued commitment, a further 11 000 grade 4-7 learners within 41 Soweto schools are now involved in the programme. Learners will spend at least one hour every week, throughout the school year, engaging in Move-It, Moving Matters® activities. “The Department of Education has welcomed this programme in our

schools and we have thus far seen the improvement in the development of our learners. We are excited to be partnering with the private sector in ensuring that learners in our schools are given an opportunity to advance in their growth,” says Tshepo Seate, District Director, Johannesburg Central District. Everyone involved in Move-It, Moving Matters® agrees on the importance of collaborating to make the initiative work. According to Dr Claire M. Nicholson, Director and Expert Advisor of Move-It, Moving Matters® and its associated Get Ahead Sports Programme (GASP™), “The success of the programme in Soweto is dependent upon the strong, committed

KEEPING IT CLEAN

Total South Africa is on a mission to help protect our country’s natural heritage June saw Total South Africa launching the 2014 Keep The Kruger Clean campaign in partnership with SANParks, proving its commitment to conserving the natural environment by reducing litter in the park. First initiated in 2008, SANPark’s Keep The Kruger Clean campaign encourages staff, community members and learners from schools situated close to the park to join forces in a day-long, annual clean-up to ensure that the Kruger Park – one of South Africa’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites – remains in pristine condition. During the 2012 Keep The Kruger Clean campaign, SANParks introduced the “Vukani the Vulture” mascot. This year, the mascot will continue to be visible throughout the park on all rubbish bins, as a reminder to the public to keep the park free of litter and waste. “Total South Africa regards South Africa’s natural heritage as one of our greatest assets. To this end, the company prioritises environmental conservation and is committed to preserving the natural environment for future generations,” says Christian des Closières, Total South Africa’s MD and CEO. This year, Total South Africa also presented the 2014 Kruger National Park’s Achievement

8-9 Keeping it clean.indd 8

Awards, which honour Kruger National Park service station dealers. The awards acknowledge the top-notch performance of Total South Africa service station dealers who work within the park and are committed to flying the Total flag high for park visitors from across the globe. “Total South Africa intends to continue to support SANPark’s various awareness campaigns and assist in educating the public about the importance of nature conservation through this partnership. We have enjoyed this relationship for many years now and through this collaboration with SANParks, we aim to contribute towards sustainable development by working smarter to protect our precious natural resources and to preserve our environment for future generations,” adds des Closières. By highlighting the importance of conservation and providing South Africans with the opportunity to appreciate the splendour and diversity of their country, and in fact their continent, Total South Africa aims to instill a culture of pride in South Africa’s natural heritage and a sense of responsibility for its ongoing preservation.

Nazlee Rajmohamed, General Manager Finance and IS, talks to @Total about her commitment to integrity, transformation and setting the highest standards

PLEASE GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF YOUR CAREER AT TOTAL SOUTH AFRICA... I joined the business in 2011 as an Internal Audit Manager. The role at the time included policies and procedures, enterprise risk management and internal audit. It was an external appointment with the mandate of changing the perception of the team from one of policeman, to that of value-added business partner. It was an interesting time as enterprise risk management was in its infancy. Two years later, I took over Purchasing. AMO had launched the OM plus optimisation project. Purchasing had to deliver a rather challenging level of savings in support of this. It was also the first attempt at implementing the BEE codes which had just come into effect. In 2005, I moved to Nigeria as CFO. This was an exciting opportunity. One of the highlights was presenting the annual results to an open meeting of shareholders. In 2008 I moved to Paris as Financial Controller for Asia Pacific. After six years away, I returned to South Africa in 2011 and took over as GM Finance and IS in 2012.

I believe leadership is about our communication and processing styles, rather than our gender

10-11_Spotlight.indd 10

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER? I particularly enjoyed my time in Nigeria. We worked really hard, but my lasting impression is of people with a deep capacity for happiness. The positive attitude to life which surrounded me, made working a meaningful experience!

WHAT ARE YOUR BUSINESS PRIORITIES FOR 2014? A large part of this year is dedicated to implementing the system change while maintaining our SOX B rating – SOX is an auditing act that protects investors by improving accuracy and reliability of corporate disclosures – and achieving an unqualified audit report. This is a key road map deliverable for 2014. The project is reaching the point where activities that began with the core team must now carry through to everyone in the organisation. We’re committed to maintaining the high reporting standards that we reached last year – we are grateful to all who helped us achieve this, and ask for their support again this year!

WHAT IS YOUR TEAM DOING TO REALISE TOTAL SOUTH AFRICA’S VISION OF MOVING “FROM GOOD TO GREAT”? Each of my team members has a role to play on our roadmap of 40 initiatives to take us “From Good to Great”. IS is committed to

helping business in launching new e-technology offers. Currently, they’re working on the loyalty offer and supporting the new TOTAL card rollout. They’re poised to take on any new initiatives the Business requires. As a team, our immediate focus is managing the impact of the Harmonie upgrade: before, during, and after implementation. We must ensure the integrity of our reports during this process.

HAVE YOU BEEN MENTORED IN YOUR CAREER? I have never been in a formal mentoring programme but I have worked with some exceptional leaders, so I have been exposed to skills and practices that I aspire to emulate.

WHAT TYPE OF LEADER ARE YOU? I think I bring the same expectations to the people around me that I have of myself: just as I challenge myself on performance and due process, I challenge everyone around me.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FACED BY WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP? I think as more and more women reach positions of power, the male/female workplace dynamics will work themselves out, but I believe that leadership is more about our communication and processing

2014/07/25 12:20 PM

11

styles, rather than our gender. I am very supportive of the leadership programme currently being rolled out. I think the insights we gain within the company will help us grow as people and leaders. For me, the most important trait in a leader is personal integrity. I believe that on some level we always pick up on the intention and integrity behind people’s actions.

WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED AND INSPIRED? The opportunity to make a difference is a real privilege. I am particularly committed to the transformation of the Finance leadership team. It would be a life-long source of satisfaction for me if one day, we had a black African GM: F&IS, who was recruited during my tenure. I believe that my role is to find professionals of the highest calibre. Total will do the rest in terms of taking potential candidates through the professional development processes.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A WORK/LIFE BALANCE? I’m not sure that I do, but I plan to address that after Harmonie go-live! Curling up with a good book and relaxing at home with loved ones helps.

Accordingly, preparations are already underway for the upgrade of these two service stations. Ten new bridges – three higher than 100 m and longer than 0,5 km – will be constructed. In total, the bridges will be more than 3 km long and will be linked to

approximately 100 km of rural feeder roads. In addition, permanent accommodation will be made available initially for senior construction staff, to be used at a later stage by operations and maintenance staff working on the project. These developments will have a direct effect on the Tlokoeng fuelfilling point. It is expected that the labour force will increase in 2015 and 2016, reaching a peak of between 2500 and 3000 labourers from 2018 to 2020, then decrease from 2021 to 2022.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Within the Total Group, the Compliance Department leads the fight against fraud and violations of competition law. The diversity of the countries we operate in and the wide range of third parties we work with expose us to considerable risks and require our constant vigilance. In addition, laws have become more stringent and sanctions are increasingly severe. The company can be sentenced to heavy fines and its image can suffer serious damage if found contravening the law. Beyond that, the risk concerns all employees, independent of their grade, because they can be held personally responsible. Adopting appropriate measures and maintaining a high level of integrity contribute to the sustainable development of our activities and the protection of our individual and collective reputation.

economic transformation and growth. I’ve become much more aware of Total’s contribution to the improvement of our relationship with our stakeholders.

spirit of giving and rewarding people for the work they put into their communities, especially in poverty-stricken areas in Swaziland.

HOW HAVE YOU TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTED TO YOU?

WHAT DOES “FROM GOOD TO GREAT” MEAN TO YOU?

HOW HAS TOTAL CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR GROWTH?

Total has exposed me to the “scientific” nature of the entire South African fuel industry’s value chain, and as such has really expanded my knowledge as a legal professional providing legal support services to Total’s main business team. This means the business gets improved support services. More knowledge of course means personal growth too, as an individual and an employee.

HOW HAVE YOU TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES PRESENTED TO YOU?

I’ve really used the opportunity to learn more about the petroleum industry and its importance as a major contributor to the country’s

18_in profile.indd 18

For me this means moving towards an environment that operates sustainably by creating a risk-averse approach, with zero tolerance for fraud and an atmosphere which is aimed not only at employee and shareholder satisfaction, but stakeholder satisfaction at large. It strives to create the utmost value-add for all involved.

“From my first year with the company, I started to grow academically, thanks to regular training and interaction with various people”

HOW HAS TOTAL CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR GROWTH? Enormously! I started out as an Administrative Assistant to the Territory Manager for Total Swaziland, and from my first year with the company, I started to grow academically, thanks to regular training and interaction with various people. Over the years I’ve learnt to multi-task, doing administrative work, working with dealers and being called upon to negotiate business with stakeholders, from high-ranking government officials to small businesses. I have learnt to become calm in a crisis, and have matured immensely. Playing the role of PR liaison for the company when dealing with CSI, promotions and sponsorship projects has taught me the

I managed to realise my potential and achieve my dream by furthering my education, and have just completed and graduated with an MBA. I’ve learnt to be self-driven, reliable and professional. I work well under pressure to successfully achieve goals, while observing business policies and procedures.

WHAT DOES “FROM GOOD TO GREAT” MEAN TO YOU? Actually, this expression sums up my career path with Total! I can proudly say that from day one, I’ve contributed significantly to the growth of Total Swaziland. My aim is to continue to grow and be an integral part of the Total business. I intend to continue to take the Total brand “from good to great” by offering excellent service to internal and external customers, and making Total visible in all corners of Swaziland.

Top Service Awards Making it personal with brand TOTAL The Total South Africa Top Service Awards, which honours dealers who have shown exceptional

performance, took place from April 1 to 3 in Cape Town. The message of the awards ceremony

was “making it personal”, the key to being the best Total brand ambassador possible. “Making it personal” starts by taking a look at our personal brand, which is about our personal reputation. How are we perceived

by others? What comes to mind for people when they think about us? How would we like to be seen? How we are perceived by others depends very much on how we act and how we present ourselves.

In the same way, the Total brand is shaped by how its representatives (that’s us!) act publicly, towards customers. If we are to create a positive perception of the Total brand, we need to step up and make it personal.

The “making it personal” message is not relevant only for dealers, but for all Total South Africa employees, in a personal and professional capacity. So, ask yourself: hat are you about? What do you stand for? What does your role and your W business unit stand for? hat are you good at? Every good brand carries with it the notion of W expertise, of being the best in its field. Find what you are good at, and do it with passion! What’s your style? This is not so much about what you communicate about yourself and your work, but how you communicate it.
