Christmas fundraising update

TREES OF REMEMBRANCE Once again our Trees of Remembrance are at our supporting supermarkets and shopping centres. Please do say hello if you see our lovely volunteers who are at the tables. It is a chance to be able to remember loved ones and of course help hospice by donating when you place a bauble on the trees.

The baubles are available exclusively at Farmers stores at a cost of $10 each – the full $10 will be donated to support hospice services in our community. So please head into Farmers and purchase these beautiful pieces of art for your Christmas tree and help raise funds for your hospice.

Fantastically we have all Farmers stores raising funds for hospices throughout the country in the lead up to Christmas. As well as having the Trees of Remembrance in our 4 local stores, they will also be selling two specially designed, hand painted baubles.

Make sure you visit these local Farmers stores that are helping Totara Hospice this December: Farmers Pakuranga - Pakuranga Plaza Farmers Botany - Botany Town Centre Farmers Papakura - 46 O’Shannessey St, Papakura Farmers Manukau - Westfield Manukau

Greetings All, Kia ora tātou, Kia Orana, Talofa Lava, Malo e lelei, Fakaalofa Lahi Atu, Ni sa Bula Vinaka, Namaste, Ní hăo, Hola! Summer is on the way and with that, Christmas and the festive season. The holidays are a great time to connect with you all again and reiterate our appreciation for your support throughout the year. We really value our relationships with you, our communities, as we couldn’t make Hospice happen without you.

Additional news this year is that we will receive a long awaited boost of approximately $1m to our government funding. This will go some way to addressing the $3.5m shortfall that we currently manage with your help – our supporters and volunteers. When we say that we appreciate all you do and we wouldn’t be here without you - we mean it.

This time of the year also brings about reflection on what we have done over the months. Earlier this year we developed and implemented our 5 year strategic plan ‘Hospice in our Hands’. This has been a significant milestone for our organisation, detailing our strategic direction and associated priorities and objectives as your Hospice. Thank you for the feedback that you have given us over recent years, it has been invaluable in helping us prioritise our activities in order to continue to meet the needs of patients and families.

Totara Hospice South Auckland remains the lowest funded specialist palliative care hospice in New Zealand. As at Year End June 2015, we were funded only 49% of our costs - this equated to $7.77 per capita (the range nationally is $7.77 to $21.34). The Government’s Budget 2015, ensures that important steps are being taken to address the historic and significant shortfall in our

• We provided approximately 2,500 in patient bed days and accepted over 9,500 community visits/800 referrals for our community home based service. During 2015 I have also participated in some thank you events – for local businesses who support us, fundraisers and volunteers. We had fun, we shared information, and enjoyed reinforcing the meaning behind our relationships. I had the privilege of attending our Volunteer Long Service Awards, over 60 Totara Hospice volunteers were recognised for long service; some for 5 years and some as long as 30 years. This was an amazing event – their commitment is inspiring and reminds us of the legacy we hold.

Totara Hospice South Auckland remains the lowest funded specialist palliative care hospice in New Zealand

By the very nature of what Hospice represents, we recognise that our communities engage with us when they are at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives; facing the end of life. As such we respect the trust you place in us and recognise that your expectations are understandably high. ‘Hospice In Our Hands’ belongs to all who have a relationship with Totara Hospice; governance, management, staff, volunteers, the communities we serve, clinical network partners, funding organisations and sponsors. We are all needed and we all have something to contribute to securing our prosperous, sustainable and purposeful future in order that we remain accessible and free to those who need us.

funding and this cash injection brings us to a funding level of approximately $10 per capita. Although this is still some way from equity, we welcome the government taking clear action. All of this is important as last year saw the biggest demand for Hospice services in our history. Over the years the health system has predicted a growing need for palliative care. Our figures support that, this year: • 17% of referrals were for conditions other than cancer - renal, respiratory, heart, neurological and other chronic diseases. • The youngest person in our service was 16 years and the oldest 95 years.

So we are busy, we are energised, we have delivered another year of care and are about to commence a new one. There is no time more fitting to say thank you for caring and staying connected to us, and I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2016!
