Dixieland Delight

Sparks Excitement in UA Students

BY IVAN WHITE

A

labama has many traditions, from the Houndstooth apparel passed down from the Bear Bryant era, to the singing of Rammer Jammer after every victory. However, there is one tradition that while arguably one of the most underrated, the University of Alabama student body has taken and made their own. That tradition would be the singing of the song, “Dixieland Delight,” at select home games inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The 1983 hit song was written by Ronnie Rodgers and originally performed by the band Alabama, who hail from Fort Payne, Ala. Tyler Feagan, a junior at Alabama, said it is a sign of things to come and that the fall season is just around the corner. “This song means that it is time for football, and not just any game but a major game,” Feagan said. “Sometimes when I hear ‘Dixieland Delight’ play over the P.A. at Bryant-Denny, I feel like I could even play for Coach Saban.” That is just a taste of what this song means to the university. There are also other factors that go into making this song so legendary at the university. “When you hear that song playing you get an excitement going as if it were a holiday, only because you just never know when the next time you will hear that song playing inside the walls of Bryant-Denny,” junior Will Crowe said. This statement tells a little of what adds to the nostalgia of the song. Historically, this song has been predominantly played during the third quarter of a major game in BryantDenny, one exception being the 2012 Iron Bowl in which “Dixieland Delight” was played in the fourth quarter, and where the Tide won, 49-0. “Back in 2012 against Auburn, it meant so much to sing and hear that song. It was an introduction, something that I had never been a part of ever before,” Crowe said. The song can be compared to snow in Alabama - you never know when it’s going to happen, but you know that there is always a chance. The origins of the student-embraced lyrics only go back as far as the 2000s. The song quickly caught on and has since been a cherished tradition. “I don’t really remember the first time I really heard the song or who originally introduced me to the lyrics, but that doesn’t matter, I just know that when I hear the intro for this song it’s time for Alabama football, and hopefully a Tide W,” junior Carter Hanthorn said. The song “Dixieland Delight” is more than just a song to the University of Alabama student body, it is a tradition that marks a major game for the Tide in which they will need all of the 100,000 in attendance to help lift the Tide to victory. So next time you have the chance - and the privilege - of being inside Bryant-Denny Stadium, just remember: when you hear the start of “Dixieland Delight” and watch the student section erupt, just know that you are about to take part in a tradition that you will be able to share with generations to come.

Big The

Three

from the 2012 Class

By LARRY BURTON

As

is usually the case, in 2012 Nick Saban was doing his job recruiting top talent and shaping future teams and that year’s class looked to have three big stars that would not only help Alabama in terms of the top recruiting class challenge that he usually wins, but also help the Tide win games in the future. Those five-star football players had a lot in common. They include Landon Collins, a five-star athlete who starts at safety for Alabama and is considered one of the best safeties in the SEC and T.J. Yeldon, who starts at running back and is considered one of the best running backs in the SEC. The third one was Eddie Williams, of Panama City Beach, Fla., also a five-star athlete who played quarterback, safety, cornerback, running back and receiver for Arnold High School. Today he is back in Panama City Beach (although exploring going to junior college) while awaiting trial for assault and robbery as well as a gun charge. He applied for youthful offender status which was denied and his records for now aren't available, but his story is quite public and serves as a story that

tell their recruits and players. It is a story of how a bad decision, made in a split second, can affect the rest of your life. Collins is a lock to sign an NFL contract when he hangs that crimson helmet in his locker for the last time. Likewise, Yeldon will be a millionaire by this time next year. By this time next year, Williams will likely be incarcerated and serving an undetermined sentence on his charges. His dreams of being lifted into the air by his teammates after a game winning play are now only that, dreams that may haunt him in the late night hours. Maybe the same late night hours when Williams’ world unraveled due to poor choices. It was a Monday in the early morning hours (proving that nothing good happens to football players after midnight), when Williams, in the company of D.J. Pettway and Tyler Hayes, both fellow teammates, found a fellow student coming back to a dormitory at about 3:20 a.m. According to reports, Pettway stayed in the car while Hayes and Williams approached the student, who was then punched, beaten and robbed by the duo. Williams assaulted and robbed another student just

a little while later. Pettway, who according to statements stayed in the car during both incidents, was nonetheless booted from the team and spent a year at a junior college before pleading to be reinstated to both Alabama and the football team. Because he did not participate in the assault, he was granted a return, but for Hayes and Williams, the dream of playing on a national stage left as quickly as the blows they delivered to their fellow students. Somewhere, Williams watches each Saturday as his fellow recruits from the 2012 class play on national television. One can only wonder what goes through his mind as he watches the team he was supposed to be a part of. So many of the players on the team he knows as friends - some of the newbies, he doesn't know. But everyone on the Alabama team knows Williams. His story is told to every incoming freshman by the coaching staff, is still told among players who knew him and a message of his seemingly unlimited potential carried to those who didn't. It's not just a story of a player who committed a crime and lost his freedom. His freedom will at one point be restored, but his

It's account And just as this story doesn't escape ability. Or as Saban sometimes says, “it's the consciousness of any of the players on how you affect others in a positive way.” the team, Williams can't escape it either. This year, Saban has already recruited As he watches the team and sees the and gotten commitments from three more need for help in the defensive secondary, five-star athletes for the 2015 class. These he knows he did the wrong thing. But they also know and will continue to hear, about another five-star recruit that never got to start a game or never got to hear the cheers that rain down from 100,000 fans in BryantDenny Stadium just for him. It doesn't matter that this young man may well end up watching his fellow recruits from a jail cell or living room sofa. It matters that at least someone has the chance to learn from his mistakes. Since his arrest and release until trial, Williams has returned to Panama City Beach and according to locals here, has returned to his church. Supposedly Williams realizes the enormity of his mistake and not only the weight it brought down on him, but his school and team and the victims as well. Sometimes good things can happen from bad things. If everyone learns a lesson from this - if it keeps one star shining that may have blinked out - then this one fallen star may not have fallen in vain.

TEXAS A&M The Aggies have been in pretty good shape from an injury standpoint. As of Sept. 20, linebacker A.J. Hilliard is listed with an ankle injury and is out indefinitely. Run support has been better for A&M this year, but they need to stay healthy in the front seven to remain competitive on defense. Head coach Kevin Sumlin announced back on Aug. 20 that defensive back Victor Davis was suspended from the team indefinitely. Alabama

Through the month of September, the Tide has been relatively healthy. Defensive back Eddie Jackson has been the only real significant injury within a young secondary. Coach Nick Saban has hinted that Jackson could be available to play soon. Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin has made a splash on the Crimson Tide offense and looks to create matchup problems for opposing defenses.

Auburn Two players for Auburn were injured in their game against La. Tech on Sept. 27 and are listed day-to-day according to head coach Gus Malzahn. Linebackers Kris Frost and Cassanova McKinzey suffered undisclosed injuries and are needed for their veteran leadership. Jermaine Whitehead remains suspended as of Sept 29 with no word on future return. LSU The Bayou Bengals are hurting right now on defense and appear to have taken an even bigger blow. Defensive back Dwayne Thomas suffered an undisclosed injury and is likely to miss their Oct. 4 meeting with Auburn. Defensive tackle Quentin Thomas has an arm injury and is listed day-to-day. After some sluggish performances from their offense, coach Les Miles named true freshman Brandon Harris his starting quarterback against Auburn. Vanderbilt

The Commodores kicked off their season with a virtual mugging at the hands of Temple University. On top of allowing 352 total yards of offense, David Shaw’s team landed themselves in hot water with their opening night uniforms. The team’s slogan, “Anchor Down”, was embroidered across the backs of their jerseys, resulting in mass confusion amongst the officials. The NCAA later stated that, excluding the military schools, no team may put slogans on the backs of their player’s uniforms.

ecruiting services have been making negative headlines in the sports world recently. There is some confusion about what exactly these recruiting services are and what they do. It isn’t fair to paint all services with the same brush. Some “scouts” attempt to exert their influence to get prospects to go to a certain school. As with most things, there are good and bad sides. There are scouts accused of wrongdoing and on the other side there are scouts who honestly have the best interest of the high school athlete at heart. Where did these scouting services come from? The short answer is that, they’ve always existed in one form or another. High school coaches traditionally made highlight tapes and sent them to schools in an attempt to promote athletes. As recruiting has exploded, and turned into a major industry, services came to the fore. In major college athletics, many coaches are just as interested in the character of a recruit as they are in how many reps they can bench, or how fast they run a 40-yard dash. The legitimate, legal services try to provide this snapshot of a recruit. They exist to help college coaches sift through the thousands of recruits now receiving publicity thanks to websites such as Rivals.com and Scout.com. There is nothing wrong with colleges contracting out for scouting services, or access to a database of recruits if all rules are abided. According to a report from The Birmingham News, The University of Alabama spent $218,628 on recruiting services such as these from 2008-2010. The legitimate recruiting services exist to promote high school athletes. The services that cause headaches, not only to football programs but to the NCAA as well, seek to use a relationship with a high school athlete for profit. Recruiting services have changed the face of college athletics. They provide more detail then ever before and help high school athletes get scholarships that they would not have had an opportunity to receive in the past. Unfortunately, there are some people who choose to try to abuse this new, excellent idea for their own personal gain.

BY SCOTT HODNETT

he second day of the 2014 SEC Media Days was just underway and Steve Spurrier was on the podium. The entire media was anxiously waiting for a great quote from the South Carolina head coach. Almost like clockwork, the “Old Ball Coach” did not disappoint. When asked a question about head coach Nick Saban underachieving at Alabama, Spurrier had a few pointed comments. “I think they’ve had five of the No. 1 recruiting classes out of the last six years, which has got to make Saban the greatest recruiter in the history of college football,” Spurrier said. “Arguably, they’ve got the greatest collection of football players ever assembled for a college team.” Spurrier has been known for making controversial comments about other coaches and teams in the past, so this was no shocking development. However, a surprise did come less than an hour later when Alabama landed two hard commits for the 2016 class. That’s right, the 2016 class. A trend has emerged for Alabama recruiting over the past few seasons. Not just the trend of finishing as the top class in the land, but the trend of wrapping up nearly 90 percent of their classes months before Signing Day. Not every player stays committed, but usually commits stick around after pledging to the Tide. So when Saban gets

a player to commit, it is always a good sign. The 2016 Signing Day is nearly seventeen months away and these are still just kids, but a commitment is a big deal. Demetrius Robertson and Shyheim Carter are the two players that Saban got pledges from on that second day of Media Days.

and Notre Dame. Shyheim Carter is a 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back prospect out of Kentwood, La. He is another versatile player, but one would imagine him staying at the corner position in college. With his size and ability to gain even more weight, Carter could easily be over 200 pounds the first time he suits up for Alabama. Entering his junior season, he stands as a top-three corner in America for the 2016 cycle. He has yet to receive an offer from in-state LSU, so the Tide will more than likely have to hold off the home school. Carter already has offers from Clemson, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Mississippi State, and Georgia. Saban continues his process with recruiting major weapons for the 2016 class in Robertson and Carter. In August, the Tide also received a commitment from huge defensive tackle Raekwon Davis, out of Meridian, Miss. At 6-foot-7 and 315 pounds already, it is scary to imagine how much bigger Davis could become. Yes, these kids are still 16 or 17 years old and they could easily flip to other schools in the next seventeen months. However, one cannot deny the importance of how early Saban is getting these players to pledge. Spurrier's comments seemed to be immediately backed up that day in July. Saban may be the greatest recruiter in college football history.

Andre Smith championship team starts on the offensive line. The center draws a lot of attention, but left tackle is arguably the toughest position to play. A left tackle’s primary role is protecting a quarterback’s blind side and opening up holes in the running game. Hailing from Birmingham, Ala., Andre Smith was a physical specimen in high school. A former five-star recruit, Smith was a three-year starter at Huffman High School. He recorded 88 pancake blocks as a senior and was named Class 6A Lineman of the Year. Rivals and Scout.com regarded Smith as the No. 1 offensive lineman in the nation. Mike Farrell, writer for The Sporting News, called Smith “the best offensive line prospect since Orlando Pace.” Smith started his career at Alabama under Mike Shula and ended it under Nick Saban. In 2006, Smith started 13 games at left tackle as a true freshman. He led the team with 831 snaps and 62 knock down blocks. Smith logged a season-high in snaps against Arkansas (80) and scored his first touchdown on a lateral pass from John Parker Wilson in the 2007 Independence Bowl. He was named SEC All-Freshman first team at the end of the 2006 season. As a sophomore, Smith started all 14 games at left tackle in 2007. He guided

Alabama to six rushing touchdowns and 313 yards in its season opener against Western Carolina. Smith was the Tide’s main blocker for running back Terry Grant in its matchup against Vanderbilt. He helped Grant rush for 173 yards and Alabama defeated the Commodores 24-10. Smith ended his sophomore campaign as UA’s four-time Co-Offensive Player of the Week (Vanderbilt, Houston, Mississippi State and Louisiana-Monroe) and received first-team All-SEC honors. Alabama’s rushing attack was dominant in 2008. Behind Smith, Mark Ingram rushed for 728 yards and 12 touchdowns. Glenn Coffee recorded 1,383 rushing yards and 10 scores. Smith led the team with 103 knockdown blocks and seven downfield blocks in his junior season. He allowed one quarterback sack and was penalized twice. Alabama lost to Florida 31-20 in the 2008 Southeastern Conference Championship game, but Smith helped the Crimson Tide collect 136 yards rushing and 323 yards of offense. He was suspended from playing in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, but Smith declared himself eligible for the 2009 NFL Draft. Before entering the draft, Smith was recognized as a unanimous All-American in 2008. He was the Outland Trophy

winner and shared Jacobs Blocking Trophy with Arkansas center Jonathan Luigs. Smith was considered a top five pick by NFL analysts. He was taken as the sixth pick in the first round by the Cincinnati Bengals. Smith played seven games at right tackle. He broke his foot and went to injured reserve on Nov. 13, 2010. Cincinnati totaled 2,056 rushing yards in 2009 and 1,522 yards in 2010, but Smith’s breakout season came in 2011. In his return to the Bengals, Smith guided the offense to 1,778 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. The next two seasons had no drop off in production. Smith led the Bengals to 1,745 yards rushing with 11 scores in 2012. He re-signed with Cincinnati to a three-year, $18 million contract and guided them to 1,755 rushing yards with 14 touchdowns in 2013. Smith has logged 50 starts in 59 games for Cincinnati. He’s helped the team notch two AFC North Division crowns (2009, 2013) and four playoff appearances (2009, 2011, 2012-13). Cincinnati is a good NFL team, but right now they can’t seem to get over the hump and progress deep into the playoffs. With the weapons it has on offense and Smith leading the line, hopefully 2014 will be the season for the Bengals.

To Subscribe PLease visit Foster was redshirted in 2013, but brings a lot to Alabama t pays to be prepared, even when one isn’t called on

for the job. In the past, freshmen didn’t receive much field time. It was their job to learn the system and get acquainted with the team. Nowadays, coaches want bigger, faster and stronger players. With that being said, we are starting to see an increase of freshmen on the gridiron. A native of Monaca, Pa., Robert Foster eyes 2014 as his breakout season. Foster was a household name at Central Valley High School due to his ability to be an explosive yet versatile athlete. Foster is a former five-star prospect who was a three-year starter at Central Valley. In 2010, Foster caught 25 passes for 520 yards and seven touchdowns. He totaled 406 yards rushing with three scores as a running back. Foster recorded 37 receptions for 584 yards and five touchdowns as a junior in 2011. He collected 419 yards rushing and two touchdowns at running back. Foster put in 45 catches as a senior for 756 yards and 14 touchdowns. He totaled 549 yards rushing with 12 scores. Foster is an instinctive player on defense. In his senior season, he had 67 tackles, eight pass breakups and four interceptions. Foster’s efforts earned him a PSWA All-State selection as a specialist in 2011 and Pennsylvania Sportswriters Class AAA All-State honors in 2012. 247Sports.com rated Foster as the No. 1 receiver nationally. ESPN ranked him as its No. 2 receiver nationally and No. 1 receiver in Pennsylvania. Rivals.com placed Foster as its No. 4 receiver nationally.

as a receiver. He’s a physical presence at 6-foot-3, 191 pounds, and he displays balance and body control. Foster can create leverage inside as a slot receiver or burn defensive backs as a deep threat. He is a sure-handed receiver that’s deceptively fast. Alabama fans witnessed Foster’s playmaking abilities in the Tide’s 2014 spring game. Foster developed a connection with quarterback Cooper Bateman and caught four passes for 50 yards. Foster impressed teammates and coaches with his explosive play in fall camp. He’s learning from fellow wide receiver DeAndrew White on how to be a savvy route runner and coach Billy Napier is teaching Foster how to roll with the quarterback. White separated his shoulder in the aftermath of Alabama’s 33-23 victory over West Virginia. His two-week absence gives Foster a chance to step up and gain valuable experience. It will be tough competition for Foster against Chris Black, Cameron Sims, ArDarius Stewart and Raheem Falkins, but Foster possesses the “it” factor to get the job done. Blocking is the lone aspect Foster has to improve on. Whether it’s setting the edge for a running back or making a key block to spring a receiver free downfield, Foster must improve his technique. Amari Cooper and Christion Jones remain the marquee names until White’s return, but don’t overlook Foster. He is one of few freshmen at Alabama who have “game changer” written all over them.

Poetry Redshirt by Jessica Temple When I got the call, I told everyone it didn't matter if I ever got to play or not. I made the team. I was on scholarship. I was going to Alabama. All last year, I worked hard, trained hard, practiced, bulked up. Studied. Kept saying I was just so happy to be here. Happy to have a spot. Happy to have that crimson jersey with my name on it. But this year, I'm really in it. I'm third string, but the coaches have to know I'm ready. Saw me working my butt off all last year. Summer too. They'll have to see what I can do when it counts. I used to say, back home, I'd be happy anywhere, just wanted to keep playing a little longer, go to school. When I said I was so happy to be here last year, I really was. But now I can't settle

PIZZA

Ingredients 1 pound prepared pizza dough, room temperature, halved 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 1/2 cups diced pineapple (from about 1/2 pineapple) 1 bunch scallions, cut into 1-to-2-inch pieces 1/4 pound deli-sliced ham 3/4 cup shredded white cheddar cheese (about 3 ounces) 3/4 cup shredded Muenster cheese (about 3 ounces)

24

TDAL september/october 2014

Directions

Preheat a grill to medium. Shape each piece of pizza dough into a ball. Drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil on each of 2 rimmed baking sheets, place 1 dough ball on each baking sheet and turn to coat in the oil. Place a metal cooling rack upside down on the grill perpendicular to the grill grates (or use a grill basket); brush the rack with the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil. Working in batches, grill the pineapple, scallions and ham, turning as needed, until lightly charred, 5 to 8 minutes per batch; transfer to a plate as each batch is done. Cut the ham slices in half, if desired. Using tongs, remove the cooling rack from the grill. Pat and stretch or roll each dough ball into an approximately 8-by-12-inch oval. Carefully place each piece of dough directly on the grill and cook until marked and golden, about 5 minutes. Flip the crusts and top evenly with the cheese, ham, scallions and pineapple. Continue grilling until the cheese melts and the crust is cooked through, about 6 more minutes. (If the crust is browning too quickly, slide the pizzas to the outer edge of the grill.) Transfer the pizzas to a cutting board and cut into pieces. Arrange the shrimp on a grate, placing an aluminum foil protector under the exposed portion of the skewers to keep them from burning. Grill the kebabs until the bacon is nicely browned and the shrimp are cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes per side, 4 to 6 minutes in all, turning the kebabs to ensure even cooking.
