Grays Stick Technology Grays continue to invest in our research programme into both the playing characteristics of our composite and wooden sticks. This involves both laboratory and field testing of all our sticks to assess their playing characteristics. Grays have developed extensive expertise and technical data thus enabling us to create our range of composite and wooden sticks. This year we are introducing the latest Tri-Tec carbon fibre weave.

The research programme Grays research laboratory testing programme was done in conjunction with one of England's foremost universities. By using players of both international and club level we also conduct hitting tests using each model within our collection of sticks.

Reinforcement levels The research process involved hitting balls with each of our sticks whilst being filmed using special high speed cameras that had also been used extensively in ball speed tests. By filming each hit using 400 frames per second each individual swing speed and impact ball deflection speed was accurately measured and from this data the stick’s rigidity was established. By drawing together the data of the tests, Grays have been able to accurately assess the matrix formulae required in our composites and our wooden stick models.

This part of the testing is conducted in the laboratory in a controlled environment to establish the feel factor of receiving skills. This involved firing a hockey ball at each model of stick to establish how much rebound occurs when the ball makes its initial contact with the stick head. This process is an accurate simulation of ball receiving skills.

ENERGY REDUCTION HANDLE

The IFA absorbs the initial ball contact with the surface of the stick head and provides a softer feel. Our special combination of shock absorbing aramid and fibreglass fibres improves first touch control and creates a better feel. The textured finish helps give more grip and control of the ball, particularly on water based surfaces.

The Grays Energy Reduction Handle is designed to reduce the impact energy transmitted from the head of the stick through the blade and hands wrists and forearms. The thermo rubber sleeve around the handle helps to improve the players control and feel when both hitting and receiving, leading to improving a players first touch on the ball.

“TRI-TEC” THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY FROM GRAYS Tri-Tec is the latest development in carbon fibre technology from Grays and takes hockey stick technology to a new level. The new Tri-Tec tri-axial carbon fibre weave increases the carbon fibre consistency that helps generate improved performance - particularly in the energy transfer qualities when hitting the ball. The new three directional layering process also improves the energy absorption qualities of the sticks performance in that it improves the sticks’ handle and feel as each inter-connected carbon fibre strand is more efficient and consistent than uni - directional carbon fibre weaves.

DYNABOW...

New for 2013 the new "Mid-Bow" blade profile shape has been repositioned more in the mid section of the blade at 30cm from the base of the head. The curve height is 24.75mm. The uniform bow is shaped and contoured continuously along the handle to the head and is especially contoured to improve the angle at which the stick head comes into contact with the ball - it will help give players the technical edge in performing today's 3D hockey skills. Easily identifiable by its own unique new graphical design, the Mid - Bow blade profile continues to become increasingly popular amongst a new generation of players who have learned their skills exclusively on synthetic pitches. "Mid-Bow" will help players to: • Help control "flat", "sweep" and "slap hitting" techniques. • Help "extend the reach zone" over which you can dribble the ball freely using both forehand and backhand. • Improve the "first touch" control when stopping the ball at full stretch.

STANDARD... The "Standard" blade profile shape is the classic traditional straighter shape associated with Grays positioned in the mid section of the blade at 30cm from the base of the head. The curve height is 20 mm. It has a classic bow contoured along the length of the handle and blade. Carbon Nano Tubes are molecular scale graphitic tubes that are amongst the strongest of known fibres. We have now included “Carbon Nano Tubes” as part of our resin mixture formulae. This process has involved carefully adding these nano molecule particles into the resin mix as part of the all important lay up process. The Grays formulae is so important in creating the all important stick performance qualities of increased strength and feel.

When integrated within the formulae mix of the resin, these minute sized Carbon Nano Tubes allow THE CARBON NANOTUBE (CNT) greater impregnation of the resin into the surface of the reinforcing fibres themselves, resulting in greater tensile strength in the bond of the resin itself on the surface of the reinforcing fibres.

For 2013 we have updated the Dynabow models with a new updated pinstripe design look. The Dynabow blade profile shape has a precise curve positioned mid - lower blade to give players the combination for high level technical skills, excellent energy transfer when hitting and good response when using drag flick techniques. With the blade curve point positioned at 250 mm between the new Mid -Bow and Jumbow blade profile shapes, it has been introduced at the request of our top international players, who were looking for that little extra control and stick handling. A more “rounded” lower handle shape helps players rotate the stick more freely. It has been especially shaped to make sure that it complies within the 25mm bow limit specified by the FIH. GX Turbo Grays new “Twin Beam” technology Exceptional Energy transfer when hitting combined with torsional stability and feel. For 2013 Grays have re-launched the latest cutting edge GT Turbo range. The new rear spine profile has been increased to two parallel beams positioned down the rear spine of the blade increasing both the sticks core stability and energy transfer when hitting. The sectional powerveins are positioned diagonally down the rear of the blade to give even greater stability against the torsional stresses. This powerful combination creates great hitting sticks with exceptional feel.

Our hockey stick research programme has revealed that all sticks experience some rotational flex forces when hitting the hockey ball. These rotational forces are referred to as "Torque". Very simply torque flex is responsible for the loss of energy transfer through the impact zone. Grays “twin beam technology“ combines three important component features set out to give the model greater performance. 1. The Twin beam technology down the rear of blade profile gives central "core stability" to the rear of the stick and improves energy transfer.

2. The two-directional powerveins structure creates improved stability along the back of the blade of the stick and works against these rotational flex forces. 3. The special composite fibre matrix construction on these models have been realigned to take these forces into consideration.

3 dimensional control at your fingertips... The Grays Scoop range is designed for players who want that little bit of extra stick handling control when performing the very latest three dimensional hockey stick skills. Many of the latest dribbling skills now being used by top level players require them to lift the ball off the surface of the pitch to eliminate an opponent. As the name suggests the “scooped out” area positioned across the head allows players to do this, particularly when moving at full stretch. Players also find that the Scoop “cradles” the ball more easily. The positioning of the Grays “ Scoop “ is such that it allows the player to perform these new 3D skills but does not restrict their ability to hit or flick ball successfully without any loss of control.

Mid-Bow HS Our Grays new MID - BOW HS is the latest development from Grays. For 2013 Grays have launched the very latest cutting edge technology with the introduction of the Mid – Bow HS range. The new shape has been developed and features a new central spine profile positioned centrally down the rear of the blade and continues into the back of the head. In addition to the Grays stock colours which are highlighted in the following pages, there are also available a wider range of colour options, which can be customised to suit the needs of your specific team, club, university or school. “We've been working with Grays for the past 3 years and it’s worked really well. We have a sound and genuine business plan that we developed together with Grays and the kit retailer, Hockey Warehouse. We have stocked items, a webshop and have totally moved away from the old fashioned way of selling socks from your car boot and collecting cash in. Some kit companies promise big cash incentives, some leads times are over 8 weeks and minimum orders are ridiculous for clubs when a new member joins.
