GROUP C CARS AT LE MANS IN 2012 On the Saturday of the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours (16th June 2012), the magnificent cars of the Group C era will be vying for race honours in the annual historic support race run by Motor Racing Legends. The Group C cars last ran at Le Mans in 2010, when a front row of all Silk Cut Jaguars led a mind-boggling grid that included Spice, Sauber Mercedes, Nissan R88C and Porsche 962 among the front-runners. While the 2011 Le Mans Legend, last June, saw a star-studded field of 61 cars from the fabulously evocative 1949-65 era, such is the enthusiasm for Group C that they’ve been invited back for 2012. The grid of Group C cars which will take to the track just a few hours before the start of next year’s modern 24 Hours is being put together by Group C/GTP Racing. Says Bob Berridge of Group C/GTP, “We are committed to ensuring that Group C attends some of the major historic festivals held throughout Europe, and we are thrilled to be adding to this a support race for what is arguably the greatest race in the world, the Le Mans 24 Hours. Given the level of interest from ‘new’ Group C car owners, it looks certain that we will enjoy another significant increase in grid numbers for 2012.”

Mazda CX-5 MPa introduces 1,800 ultra-strong

Meanwhile, Duncan Wiltshire of Motor Racing Legends, the company behind the Le Mans Legend, the annual historic support race at Le Mans, comments, “While we like to pick a different era for the Le Mans Legend each year, there is no doubt that Group C cars have a huge following, and provide some tremendously exciting on-track battles for the hundreds of thousands of Le Mans spectators. We have no doubt that June will see another race to remember.” The precise entry criteria for the Le Mans 24 Hour Group C support race will be advised in due course but, in the meantime, potential competitors should contact Zoë Copas atGroup C Racing on +44 (0) 7824 393839. First car to employ ultra-high tensile steel components with a 1,800 MPa rating Stronger and lighter bumper beams save weight and boost CX-5's handling agility New production methods devised to exploit introduction of new steel Mazda Motor Corporation has become the first car manufacturer to successfully develop vehicle components using 1,800 MPa* ultra-high tensile steel. This super-strength steel will debut in the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV that will go on sale in 2012. Mazda's new production technology uses 1,800 MPa ultra-high tensile steel to fabricate bumper beams, which fit inside the front and rear bumpers and minimise damage in the event of a collision. The bumper bars are 20 percent stronger and 4.8 kilograms lighter than previous versions and are a key part of Mazda's nextgeneration, lightweight and highly rigid vehicle architecture. The new body-architecture was developed as part of Mazda's breakthrough SKYACTIV Technology programme and the CX-5's bodyshell incorporates a new energy absorbing structure as well as expanded use of high-tensile steel to reduce weight. The new bumper beams were developed in collaboration with Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd and Aisin Takaoka Co Ltd. The use of high tensile steel enables vehicle parts to be thinner yet still retain the same degree of strength as previous, thicker components. This leads to significant savings in vehicle weight. Reducing the weight of bumper beams is particularly important because, as they are incorporated into the body structure at the farthest point from the vehicle's centre of gravity, outside of the wheelbase and adding to the polar moment of inertia, their weight has a considerable effect on dynamic performance and responsiveness. They must also be

3

sufficiently strong to provide maximum collision protection. For these reasons, devising a method of massproducing parts using stronger (ultra-high tensile) steel has been a high priority goal. However, stronger materials are less pliant (more rigid) and therefore absorb less energy in a collision. To overcome this, Mazda conducted extensive research into how bumper beams deform in a crash, and created a new design that absorbs energy more efficiently. Additionally, in order to ensure the bumpers provide maximum strength in the CX5, Mazda collaborated with Futaba Kogyo Co Ltd to optimise the welding techniques used in manufacturing the beams and to establish a reliable production process. Going forward, Mazda remains committed to reducing vehicle weight and improving dynamic performance, while also maintaining a high level of bodyshell rigidity and excellent impact resistance, in order to provide all its customers with genuine driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance.

CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY AT CROFT FOR TOURING CAR FANS North East circuit puts 2012 BTCC tickets on sale at special preChristmas rate Croft Circuit has put tickets for its high profile 2012 round of the fender-bending Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship on sale at a special pre-Christmas rate. The North Yorkshire venue, just off the A1 near Darlington, has been allocated a provisional date of Sat 23/

Sun 24 June on next year’s BTCC calendar.

More top class motor sport to come at Croft in 2011

The annual fixture traditionally provides fans in the North East with their only opportunity of the year to see Britain’s premier motor racing championship in action on their doorstep. It is also one of the biggest sporting events for the region.

Having already hosted the BTCC plus its two-wheel counterpart, the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship and its own tremendously popular Nostalgia historic race festival, Croft still has two more big motor sport events to come in 2011. The venue has been selected to host the final round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship and British Rallycross Grand Prix on the weekend of 5-6 November. Following that on Saturday 3 December comes another major highlight – a stage of the world-renowned Roger Albert Clark historic rally that recreates and features many of the famous rally cars from the RAC Rallies of the Sixties, Seventies and early Eighties such as Ford Escort MkI and MkIIs, Porsche 911s, Lancia Stratos, Vauxhall Chevettes, Mini Coopers and Saab 96s.

Croft has just confirmed that tickets for its 2012 BTCC event ordered by 16 December of this year will cost just £20 (Sunday) and £30 (weekend). There will also be a discount on camping prices at £10 per pitch per night including unit, car and two people. Tickets to see the BTCC at one of the most popular fixtures on the calendar will surely make for the ideal stocking filler – those interested can place their orders by calling the Croft Circuit office on 01325 721815. Advance prices will rise following this promotion. Croft Circuit Manager Tracey Morley commented: “We hope fans will consider our offer when umm-ing and ahh-ing over their Christmas lists for friends and family. It seems some way off but these things come round quickly and it’s a great opportunity to save a few pennies at a time when we’re all tightening our belts. “We’re also of course very proud once again to be holding a round of the BTCC – it’s a massive event for the region and 2012 will represent the 16th consecutive year that the UK’s top championship has visited Croft. The feedback from the BTCC, its teams, drivers and supporting categories is that the event is one of the most enjoyable on their calendar which is high praise indeed for the circuit, our staff, marshals and fans.”

Nor is it over yet for two-wheel fans with a packed programme of race action scheduled for the weekend of 15-16 October from the visiting Derby Phoenix Motorcycle Club. Back on four wheels and following the much vaunted RAC Rally date will be the ever-enthusiastic Northallerton Auto Club’s traditional Christmas Stages event on Tuesday 27 December. With car and bike race meetings plus top rally and rallycross action yet come, there’s lots of action left on the 2011 calendar. What’s more the availability of cut price BTCC tickets pre-Christmas means there’s something special to look forward to in the New Year. And of course it’s the perfect tonic to those Christmas present buying anxieties!

Cholmondeley Pageant of Power

DATES ANNOUNCED FOR 2012 CHOLMONDELEY PAGEANT OF POWER The organisers of the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power have confirmed that next year’s Pageant will take place from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 June – a month earlier than the event’s usual July slot. The Pageant (www.cpop.co.uk) takes place on the Cholmondeley Estate in Cheshire, and the motorsport event celebrates power and performance in its many forms. In 2012, the fifth year of the event, the Pageant will feature a range of new displays on land, water and in the air, a theme for the motoring content and a series of mini-events in the build up to the Pageant itself. “Every Pageant has been a remarkable success and we’ve seen year-on year increases in visitor numbers, sponsors, exhibitors and the number of displays and attractions,” explains James Hall, Event Director at the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power. “This year we also added an additional day to pack it all in. The Pageant has grown very fast, but one element that has remained constant throughout the first four years has been the poor weather. Analysis of the last 10 year weather patterns show that in this region, July has been a third wetter than June and so the decision has been made to bring the event forward a month.” For further information on the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power and for video highlights from the 2011 event, please visit www.cpop.co.uk.

DRIVER BEHAVIOUR BASED INSURANCE IS KEY TO GETTING UNDER 21s INTERESTED IN DRIVING SAYS COBRA

The Auto Press

Cobra's telematics technology already powers three driver based insurance packages. These are: Pay HowYou Drive - the better your driving the lower your premiums Pay As You Drive - based on time, distance and location of journeys covered by the driver Pay Per Use - based on a driver's mileage Looking at the bigger picture, driver behaviour based insurance will also improve the driving standards among under 20s as the better they drive the lower their premiums, which fits in

RENAULT TRUCKS LAUNCHES A NEW SALES PACKAGE WITH FLEXIBLE BENEFITS

Manufacturers and insurers can change the face of insurance for young drivers One third of drivers without a licence cite insurance as their biggest enemy Cobra sees telematics as the answer to offering driver based insurance

Only one in three (35%) of 17-21 year olds have a full licence, and out of the 65% who don’t have a licence, 34% said insurance costs were preventing them from learning to drive according to the Department of Transport’s National Travel Survey 2010.

“It’s time for a major insurance rethink, especially for younger drivers,” said Cobra UK Managing Director Andrew Smith. “If insurance prices are deterring and preventing younger drivers getting on the first rung of the insurance ladder it’s time to change things. Telematics is a proven technology that is already available and both insurer and driver can choose the best options that suit their circumstances which will help dramatically reduce premiums,” he added.

“Different operators look for different packaged solutions to meet the individual requirements of their businesses,” says Nigel Butler, Commercial Director, Renault Trucks UK Ltd. “We recognise this and the new offer provides them with the flexibility to chose from a range of high quality added value products and services as best benefits their operation.” The new package is available from all authorised distributors in the Renault Trucks UK network. To find your nearest distributor, visit the Renault Trucks website at www. renault-trucks.co.uk or call the Renault Trucks hotline on 0870 60 60 660.

The UK motor industry could continue to lose its young car buyer base over the next decade if something isn’t done to reduce car insurance costs for the under 20s according to telematics provider Cobra UK.

Cobra believes it is time for insurers to switch to driver based rather than car based policies, powered by telematics technology which is already commercially available. It measures all key outputs from a car's journey in real time such as times and distances, fuel consumption, mileage, average speed, top speed, location, journey type, cornering dynamics and accelerations and decelerations.

EUROPEAN OEMS TO DEVELOP TECHNICAL REFERENCE FOR EV CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE The Renault Nissan Alliance, PSA Peugeot Citroën and Mitsubishi Motors announced that they have decided to develop and promote the technical reference for compliance of public recharge equipments for electric vehicles in Europe, based on the existing conformity brand “EV Ready®”, originally launched by Renault and Schneider Electric. EV READY aims at guaranteeing interoperability between the charging infrastructure and electric and rechargeable hybrid vehicles in the market across Europe by means of a uniform scheme which is intended

The Auto Press

to cover the requirements that have to be considered in addition to the existing standards. While keeping an eye on further development of IEC61851-1 ed2.1, which is currently in progress, the OEMs will aim to complete the development and the formalization of the certification requirements. The validation scheme will be detailed in the coming months. “EV Ready®,” first launched in June 2010, is intended from the beginning to be open to a larger audience and to become a recognized benchmark in the field of charging systems for electric vehicles. The technical coverage of “EV Ready®” goes from the low voltage transformer to the electric vehicle. At the same time the concept keeps a strong focus on economic performance and aims to maintain openness to innovations and any future developments. Today over sixty European companies ranging from energy providers, network operators, suppliers and installers of charging stations are already working to develop and adopt “EV Ready®”, and more are welcome. The validation scheme is currently based upon the principle of combined self-declaration of conformity and routine verification of compatibility with vehicles, and to move to a third party verification based on international verification of compliance by accredited laboratory is already considered for near future.

SHOW CAR HINTS AT FUTURE DESIGN FOR FIVE-DOOR VOLKSWAGEN up! MODEL Visitors to the Frankfurt Motor Show got the biggest clue yet as to the look of the production five-door up!, in the shape of the cross up!, one of six small car family concepts that were displayed alongside the threedoor city car model. The cross up! previews the five-door up! but with the styling cues of an SUV, including suspension raised by 15 mm all round. The most obvious differences when compared with the standard up! are of course the additional doors and the styling of the C-pillars. While on the three-door car the shoulder line and windows ascend towards the rear near the Cpillars, on the five-door the two elements form a straight line, creating a more upright appearance. Many of the styling elements on the cross up! (such as the wheel arch and side sill extensions and the black side protection strips above the sills) will be familiar to those who recall the last-generation Polo Dune, sold in mainland Europe as the Cross Polo. These styling cues give the vehicle a more rugged look, as can be seen in the eye-catching front bumper with silver cross-bar and integrated fog lights. The front air intake is also modified, with a honeycomb grille that is distinctly larger, especially towards the bottom. Underneath, there is robust silvercoloured underbody protection at both ends. Like the front bumper,

the rear bumper also gets a silver cross-bar. That colour is echoed in the matt silver roof rails and the light silver door mirror caps, all offset by the eye-catching Tornado Red paint of the body, which can also be found surrounding the Volkswagen logo in the centre of the 16-inch alloy wheels. On the cross up! study, the red theme continues inside the spacious interior where the seats have red centre panels, offset by grey side panels. The dashboard panel and upper door trim panels are also body-coloured. Other accents, such as the bezels of the air nozzles and the centre console, are designed in black piano paint, while the leatherwrapped steering wheel, gearlever and handbrake all have decorative coloured seams. Order books for the three-door up! will open in October with the first models arriving in the UK in spring 2012. The five-door model will follow later in the year.

between comfort and road holding. All occupants can enjoy a true sense of well-being thanks to the large panoramic glass sunroof, which fills the cabin with light during the day and is illuminated by integrated LEDs at night. A high level of specification includes GPS navigation with touch-screen, a reversing camera and USB/Bluetooth® connectivity for portable audio players.

Supply issues could drive used car values up driving. This new Citroën body style draws upon the brand’s technological excellence, combining the grip of an off-roader with the ride and driveability of a saloon. Ecologically considerate, the model also boasts some of the lowest CO2 emissions in its segment. Available with two and four-wheel drive versions in some markets, the New Citroën C4 AIRCROSS will be launched in Europe at the end of the first half of 2012. The car will go on sale in the UK during the second half of 2012. The styling of the C4 AIRCROSS draws upon the brand’s DNA, combining the vitality of other Citroën models in the range with the strong presence of an off-roader. The sculpted horizontal lines and aerodynamic vents of the front end accentuate the model’s compact appearance. The contours of the bonnet - visible from the driver's seat - the wide wheel arches and the reduced front and rear overhangs all combine to enhance the overall impression of robustness. The distinctive light signature at the front - illuminated both day and night - is created by LEDs integrated into the vertical vents. The shape of the large 18-inch wheels and the rear lights are directly inspired by the Hypnos concept car, reworked for optimal air flow and reduced CO2emissions. Seen from the side, the inverted shark fin at the rear also hints at the design of the Hypnos concept. The fin is decorated at the tip with a chrome compass motif to denote the model’s inclusion in Citroën’s SUV family. The sophisticated design includes indicator repeaters in the door mirrors, light guides in the rear light clusters

and a reversing camera built into the chrome trim on the tailgate. The New Citroën C4 AIRCROSS is fitted with a latest generationfourwheel transmission system, providing optimal handling in all conditions. This technology allows the car to be driven permanently in fourwheel drive mode, with the torque optimally distributed between the front and rear wheels. Using the single control positioned behind the gear lever, the driver can manually select one of the three transmission modes: 2WD, for optimal fuel consumption 4WD, which automatically distributes the torque between the front and rear axles ‘Lock’,which provides maximum traction in severe conditions. The C4 AIRCROSS fulfils Citroën’s ecological commitments with its HDi 110 engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. This model is one of the front-runners in its segment for low CO2emissions. In some markets this efficient Euro 5 engine will be available with four as well as two-wheel drive. The model’s compact dimensions - 4.34m long, 1.80m wide, 1.63m high - and 10.6m turning circle ensure outstanding manoeuvrability in the urban environment. The comfort of this 5-seater is worthy of the saloon segment above, while the 442-litre boot comfortably meets the demands of modern life. Serenely confident on the road, drivers enjoy a clear view from the raised driving position with the specially developed chassis and suspension delivering the optimum balance

Post-recession decline in new car sales could impact used car supply and push up average prices BCA 2011 Used Car Market Report The overall value of used cars sold last year reached a record breaking £35 billion as the used car market continued to lead the recovery in the motor industry. Figures released from the 2011 Used Car Market Report published by BCA and written by Professor Peter Cooke show that an extra 270,000 used cars were sold last year compared to 2009, generating an additional £800 million in value. Dealers’ and private-to-private used car volumes both fared well in 2010 – dealers’ sales were up by 3.9% to 3.67 million units, and private sector volumes 10.8% higher at 2.46 million as the market reached 6.6 million units.

The average used car selling price slipped year on year, however, from £5,422 in 2009 to £5,332 in 2010, reflecting the changing mix of the used car supply in the UK. The report highlights that the UK car parc is ageing as fewer new cars have been sold since the economic crash of 2008. Underlining this trend, it was improving sales of cars in the 6-8 year age group that helped used car market volumes rise by 4.3% last year. In contrast, sales of younger used cars – 0 to 2 years – fell back by 6.9% resulting in a reduced market share. Sales of cars in the 3-5 year age group also slipped – by 2.3% to 1.84 million. Looking ahead, the Report also suggests that a lack of supply of good quality 2-5 year old used cars is a significant concern for the UK motor industry. Since the 2008 economic crash, around 500,000 fewer new cars are sold every year and industry forecasts suggest this pattern is unlikely to change before 2012. As the BCA Used Car Market Report points out, you cannot remove over two million new car sales from the used car supply chain without creating waves in the marketplace. While the number of cars in the UK (the car parc) will remain around 30 million units for the foreseeable future, the parc is ageing rapidly and ‘younger’ used cars will become an increasingly scarce commodity. “The simple fact is the UK car parc is getting older, as fewer new cars are sold and both motorists and businesses have held onto their vehicles for longer” said Tony Gannon, Communications Director, BCA. “The average age of cars on UK roads rose

in 2010 to 7.25 years, which is a 14 year high. The trend for older cars is rising and we believe this could continue for several years to come.” Will motorists be able to source the cars they need? As well as analysing sales data for 2010, the BCA Used Car Market Report looks at consumer motoring habits and car buying behaviours. The findings of research conducted amongst 4,000 motorists* reveal that price remains the most critical factor for used car buyers, with 40% saying this would be their first priority. After make and model at 35%, low mileage is the third most important factor for used car buyers at 28%. Gannon commented “Low mileage is likely to become an increasingly desirable factor for used car buyers, because examples will be relatively scarce compared to five years ago.” What to buy next? The number of motorists who think they or a family member will ‘certainly’ or ‘quite likely’ buy a used car in the next 12 months, dropped two points in this year’s survey to 14%. Seven out of ten car owners plan to buy a used car next time they change, while the number of motorists thinking of buying a nearly-new car dropped one point to 6%, compared with 9% two years ago. The number of motorists inclined to by a used diesel has fallen from 28% to 25% year on year – although this will obviously be influenced by the growing number of diesel-engined cars entering the used market over the next few years.

not changing them until mileages are much higher.” The BCA report also suggests that families will be looking for smaller, more practical and economic vehicles as household budgets get squeezed. Petrol power remains preferable for most buyers when considering their next car and this could be at odds with the supply of used cars from company fleets and businesses which often run larger, well-specified diesel-powered models. Half of this year’s survey respondents feel the rising cost of fuel will force them to change to a more fuelefficient car and/or alter their driving habits. Indeed, the price of fuel has already reached the point (130 pence plus per litre) where a fifth of motorists say they will have to seriously consider one or both these options.

CUSTOM & HOT ROD FESTIVAL 2012 Beaulieu is pleased to announce that the 2012 dates for its popular Custom event will be 16th & 17th June. One of the newer events on the Beaulieu calendar, it has in four years, rapidly expanded to a colourful gathering of over 600 vehicles on the Sunday Drive-In day.

“Our research shows that motorists have several measures in mind to curtail their frontline motoring costs”, added Tony Gannon. “Top of the list is buying a car with better fuel consumption - at 27%. But demand for these types of vehicles could well outstrip supply, pushing up prices as a consequence.”

For 2012 the event is expanding under a new name, Custom & Hot Rod Festival, to include a custom motorcycle element as well as custom cars. Beaulieu is delighted to announce that the Custom Motorcycle Show, held for the first time in Bournemouth earlier this year, will be moving permanently to Beaulieu to join the event. Hundreds of world class custom motorcycles will be on show including over 70 bikes entering the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building. There will also be hundreds of trade stands including custom bike dealers, custom accessories and hard parts, plus the Vendors and Merchandise Village and a Ride-In on both days of the show.

“The next 12-18 months are going to be a very challenging period for the UK motor industry. The potential supply shortage of younger used cars over the next few years may create upward pressure on used vehicle prices, while economic pressures may lead to reduced demand which will push prices downwards. Which of those two levers will be the stronger remains to be seen?”

Beaulieu’s Commercial Director, Stephen Munn said “All the popular elements of the previous custom shows will remain, including weekend camping with evening entertainment, a Saturday Ride-out, trade stands and the Ride-In for custom vehicles owners. With the new additions to the show, we can promise a great weekend at Beaulieu for custom car and bike enthusiasts alike.” Since the events inception by Beaulieu, custom car club Victory Wheelers has helped to jointly organise

Car ownership patterns changing The BCA research shows that the economic downturn has had a marked impact on the pattern of UK car ownership. In 2011 5% fewer families (72%) have at least one car, compared to 2010. The biggest drop is in the number of two-car households which has fallen 4% year on year to 21%.

the weekend with the venue, with both organisations agreeing that the weekend element of the custom car show would be portrayed under the Victory Wheelers South Coast Internationals banner, although the event was entirely Beaulieu funded. The whole show has been a very successful collaboration between the two organisations. Unfortunately, due to Beaulieu’s wish to expand the show to include the custom bike element, and the Wheelers preference to associate the South Coast international brand with a custom car only event, the organisations have agreed to part company amicably after this year's event. Stephen Munn said: “We have enjoyed working with Victory Wheelers over the past three years; and thank them for the help they have given us in shaping the event thus far. We wish them well for the future of South Coast Internationals.” In response, Keith Ellis, current Chairman of the Victory Wheeler’s Club stated: ” Unfortunately, due to Beaulieu’s wish to expand the show to include the custom bike element and the Wheelers preference to associate the South Coast Internationals brand with a primarily hot-rod and custom car event, the organisations have agreed to part company amicably.’’

AA CHOOSES HONDA PAN EUROPEAN FOR TWO-WHEEL FLEET

“What this data suggests is that households have been making some hard decisions about what vehicles they need to stay mobile”, continued Tony Gannon. “With a drop in twocar families, this means the remaining car will have to ‘work’ that much harder. We are likely to see households keeping cars for longer and

colour schemes, the classic styling of the VT750S is complimented by the smooth performance of a thoroughly contemporary machine. All kinds of riders, including relative newcomers, appreciate its proportions and light, confidence-inspiring handling. The VT750S also packs enough punch to keep more experienced riders entertained and is versatile enough for a range of uses from daily commuting to quick weekend blasts for leisure and light touring.

AA Chooses Honda Pan European for TwoWheel Fleet

reached the end of their service and the AA has once again chosen Honda to supply the new fleet. In total, 50 ST1300 Pan Europeans, in the distinctive yellow AA livery, will be riding around the streets of London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Derby and Nottingham, as these areas are heavily congested areas and so best suit a mixture of two and four wheeled vehicles to service the AA’s members. The Pan European was considered the most suitable motorcycle for road-side assistance by the AA for a number of reasons, to include its good luggage capacity in the form of top box and panniers, as well as its superb versatility, performance and handling, coupled with great comfort for the rider. Steve Ives, the AA’s Chief Engineer, said: "We carried out an extensive evaluation of a number of different motorcycle models but the Honda Pan European tipped the balance on a number of counts. It has an exceptional carrying capacity as standard, so our patrols can carry extra tools and equipment without the need for pannier upgrades. Other considerations were its larger battery, which will allow us to charge car batteries using the bike, the shaft drive for improved durability, as well as its excellent handling and comfort for the rider.

Each of the special edition colour scheme VT750s are priced at £6,200 OTR, as is the current tri-colour machine, with the Graphite Black version available for £5,950 OTR. All four versions of this popular machine are available to order now from Honda (UK) motorcycle dealers across the country.

Honda VT750S ‘Special Edition’

HONDA ANNOUNCES VT750S ‘SPECIAL EDITIONS’ Honda (UK) is pleased to be offering two special edition versions of the classic and retro styled VT750S - the popular machine developed to deliver all-round riding enjoyment to a wide range of riders. Both special editions feature gleaming ‘Championship White’ body work which enhances the timeless, cool appeal of this stylish model and provides a stunning contrast to its black-painted V-twin engine and luxurious chrome-finished details.

"The Pan European is a very capable bike that will allow our motorbike patrols to respond to a wider range of breakdowns than before. We have always had great service from them in the past so look forward to welcoming the Pan back as the flagship of the AA motorbike fleet."

In keeping with the retro look, the tank of the first special edition is adorned with the original Honda wing logo in red, and paying homage to Honda’s racing heritage also features a solid red stripe down its centre, flanked with smaller pin stripes. The second special edition sports the tank stripes and wing logos in a bold ‘yellow/gold’ colour, reminiscent of Honda models from several decades ago. Both variants are sure to evoke a sense of nostalgia within those familiar with Honda models from yesteryear, whilst also having strong appeal to younger riders who appreciate the retro styling which is so popular today. Also available in striking Pearl Heron Blue with Shasta White (Tri-colour) and sophisticated Graphite Black

VOLKSWAGEN’S CITY SPECIALIST HEADS FOR THE BEACH Amid the raft of new car concepts at the Frankfurt Motor Show this month, one of the head-turners was Volkswagen’s bright orange ray of sunshine, the buggy up! concept. The buggy up! is inspired by the Californian beach buggies of the 1960s. These buggies, pioneered by people such as American Bruce Meyers, took the simple, reliable Beetle chassis and engine and replaced the steel bodies with glassfibre, creating agile, fun vehicles that perfectly reflected the care-free California in which they were created. That same California feeling is encapsulated in the lightweight steel construction of the two-seater buggy up!, which brings the beach buggy

a top 500 of the most highly rated brands. The past decade has seen Aston Martin transformed from a small-scale manufacturer of specialist sports cars to one of the world’s best-known luxury brands, boasting its strongest ever line-up. From the breathtaking One-77 supercar and the elegant yet brutal V12 Zagato to the Tailor-Fit luxury city car, the Cygnet, from the powerful Vantage range and new Virage to the exquisite DB9, DBS and Rapide, every Aston Martin expresses the core values of Power, Beauty and Soul. The Aston Martin range was expanded further at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, where the company unveiled the striking new DBS Carbon Series.

bang up to date. Based on the brandnew up!, the buggy up! keeps its city sibling’s (reinforced) underbody, running gear and drive technology, while the roof-less and door-less exterior is completely redesigned, and the ride height is lowered by 20 mm. Everything is different: the bonnet is flatter, the bumpers have been reworked and the rear has been completely redesigned. The buggy up! does not have any C-pillars, and neither does it have a boot like the standard up! model. The bootlid is constructed of two pieces: the main part of the lid lifts upward like a saloon’s bootlid, but the section above the bumper folds down, like the tailgate on a pick-up, making it extremely easy to stow bulky items. On top of the lid, there are also tie-down straps for luggage. Despite all these changes, there’s no mistaking the buggy up! for anything but an up!. Climb into the buggy up! and you’ll find specially designed neoprenecovered seats that are 58 mm lower than those in the production model. To match this, engineers reduced the basic angle of the height-adjustable steering wheel by four degrees to an angle of 21 degrees, creating a gokart like driving position. Passengers also get something to hold on to, in the shape of a sturdy handle on the dash panel, because you never know what lies over the next dune.

ASTON MARTIN NAMED THE COOLEST BRAND Aston Martin has been awarded the prize of the UK’s coolest brand, winning this prestigious accolade for an unprecedented fifth time in six years. Once again, Aston Martin has topped a poll which comprises an array of leading international contemporary design-driven brands, including Apple and Bang & Olufsen, as well as other leading automotive brands. Aston Martin was also voted the top automotive brand surpassing a host of other luxury and specialist manufacturers to complete a double success. Even if there are rainclouds over the next dune, that’s no problem for the buggy up!, because as well as a rudimentary fabric roof, the interior is completely waterproof. The seats have drains in them, as do the sills and the floor. Even the controls for the iPod-compatible infotainment system are waterproof, and you can remove the entire module – including the integrated loudspeakers – so that you’ve got a sound system for your beach party. All you need to add is your favourite Beach Boys tracks.

and Chairman of the CoolBrands Council commented: “Smooth, sexy and sophisticated; British built, high quality and hand finished, let’s be honest, young or old, male or female, opinion former or British public, who wouldn’t aspire to own what is truly the coolest car on the road. Number one in five of the last six years, this British icon is truly the coolest of the cool.” Since it was established in 2001, the CoolBrands initiative has been canvassing the opinions of experts and consumers to identify the coolest brand in the UK, based on factors including style, innovation, authenticity, originality and desirability. This year’s council of 36 influencers includes music artist Jessie J, DJ and Bestival founder Rob da Bank and actress and fashion designer, Sadie Frost. After 10,000 brands are initially identified, a shortlist of 1,500 brands is established and the panel and consumers then vote to produce

ŠKODA is continuing its growth offensive by introducing its sixth production model. Citigo is the name of ŠKODA's exciting new city car. of summer 2012. Offering impressive amounts of space and four seats, the Citigo will be launched in threedoor and five-door versions. “The Citigo is one of the pillars of our growth strategy. It paves the way for tremendous opportunities in a new segment,” said ŠKODA Board Chairman Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. “The Citigo is literally a ‘Simply Clever’ car. Despite its small size, it offers ample interior space; it is agile while frugal. Put simply: it’s an attractive choice offering many clever ideas. The car offers all of ŠKODA's values in a compact package and fits perfectly with our aims.” With the Citigo, ŠKODA is entering a new sector. “The demand for small cars with low fuel consumption, at a favourable price and with reasonable operating costs, is growing,” continues Prof. Vahland. “ŠKODA's new small vehicle is a reaction to this trend. We are entering new ground and the Citigo will attract prospects mainly in our European markets.” The designers have given the car a distinct look that defines this as a new ŠKODA. The finned grille set in

ŠKODA Citigo

a chrome-plated frame and precisely shaped headlamps give the car a typical ŠKODA look. The Citigo will measure just 3.56 metres long, 1.65 metres wide and 1.48 metres high. The ŠKODA Citigo is an ideal car in and out of the city. It offers a surprisingly generous interior space, something not usually found in a city car but typical of all ŠKODA models. This has been created with the clear and transparent arrangement of all elements. The car's long wheel base – 2.42 metres – provides enough comfort for four passengers even on long trips. The boot volume is a sizeable 251 litres, which can be extended to 951 litres by folding down the rear seats. The Citigo’s interior not only offers practical space but also a high level of quality and precision in its design. Front headrests integrated into the seats, as well as a number of other smart solutions, make the Citigo a ‘simply clever vehicle’. The interior design includes numerous storage compartments, cup holders and multimedia systems, as well as storage pockets on the sides of the front seats. In addition, a special bag hook

The vehicle boasts a number of solutions to help improve overall comfort. In the three-door version, the ‘Easy Entry’ system allows easy access to the rear seats. The front passenger's seat can be moved and folded forward to ensure easy access to the rear seats. For the first time in a ŠKODA vehicle, a portable navigation system is available. The device is fitted to the dashboard and can be removed easily and used on the go. Being an integral part of the vehicle's onboard electronics, the system provides not just navigation, but also hands-free calling with built-in Bluetooth and onboard infotainment. Using a 5-inch touch screen, the driver can view important information about the car (onboard computer, optical signals from the parking sensors, etc). The Citigo places great emphasis on safety. For the first time in a ŠKODA vehicle, the designers have used a Head-Thorax side airbag to protect the heads of both the driver and the front seat passenger. Along with a number of other items, this system is part of a safety package usually found on much larger cars. In addition, active safety is enhanced by the ‘City Safe Drive’, a new brake assistance system based on a laser sensor that is activated automatically at speeds below 30 km/h when there is danger of a collision. Depending on the speed and the traffic situation, this automatic braking solution may completely prevent a collision or at least reduce its severity. The risk of bumping into the car ahead is thus reduced significantly in city traffic. The Citigo is one of only two cars in the city car segment to offer the emergency braking functionality. Two new, three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engines will be available after the Citigo's launch (44kW/60PS and 55kW/75PS). The engines and the transmission have been designed to provide optimum economy in cities and their surroundings. Reaching the operating temperature even on short distances, the engines are highly economical. Two highly economical green engines will offer impressively low fuel consumption figures of 67.3mpg and 65.7mpg respectively; with emissions of just 97g and 99g CO2/km respectively. The fuel consumption and emission levels for the standard engines are also low – 62.8mpg and 105g CO2/km with the 60PS engine and 60.1mpg and 108g CO2/km with the 75PS unit.

the little book of trikes

THE LITTLE BOOK OF TRIKES Motor trikes have been around since the dawn of motoring, with many starting out as utility vehicles or prototypes of cars. But trikes haven’t died out or become mere relics of motoring history – companies all over the world still produce them today, and many will convert a motorcycle into a trike. Trikes are not only huge fun, but can also be a lifestyle choice. They are as diverse as the people who ride them, and this book illustrates the vast range of machines available. The reader will discover a plethora of trike designs and layouts from the late 19th century to the present day. Some influential designs include Piaggio’s three wheeled vehicles, the Morgan three wheeler, and the Harley-Davidson Servicar. The book also features the products of companies that convert motorcycles into trikes, and shows some massproduced examples that you can buy today. Then there are the weird and wonderful machines built by individual enthusiasts – a testament to their engineering skills and true eccentricity ... the little book of trikes by Adam Quellin ISBN: UPC: AVAILABLE £4.99, $9.95
