GREEN PAPAYA ART PROJECTS TURNS 20 ON MAY 5, 2020, JUST A YEAR LEFT TO GO BEFORE OUR CLOSURE IN MAY 2021. BUT NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR CELEBRATION. AS THE WORLD SUFFERS THROUGH A PANDEMIC, GOVERNMENTS DEVOLVE INTO AUTHORITARIANISM, AND WE CONTINUE TO LOSE PEOPLE WE LOVE. A GENERATION IS NOT JUST DESCRIBED BY NUMBERS IN A CALENDAR. THIS PANDEMIC, OUR MEMORIES OF WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW AND HOW WE TRANSMIT THESE MEMORIES IN THE FUTURE, CAN ALSO DEFINE A GENERATION. HISTORIES CONTINUOUSLY CRYSTALLIZE FROM THE FLUIDITY OF MEMORY. AS WE CONTINUE TO REFLECT ON MOVING FORWARD TO A NEW ERA, WE COMMEMORATE THIS TIME BY EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST RESPECT AND GRATITUDE TO OUR FRONT LINERS AND THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP OUR CIVILIZATION RUNNING, WHILE CRITICIZING THOSE THAT WANT TO TAKE US INTO EVEN DARKER TIMES. CRITICISM IS ALSO AN ACT OF LOVE.

“Whatever it is, coronavirus has made the mighty kneel and brought the world to a halt like nothing else could. Our minds are still racing back and forth, longing for a return to “normality”, trying to stitch our future to our past and refusing to acknowledge the rupture. But the rupture exists. And in the midst of this terrible despair, it offers us a chance to rethink the doomsday machine we have built for ourselves. Nothing could be worse than a return to normality. Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.” Arundhati Roy The Pandemic Is a Portal

On May 15, the extended Enhanced Community Quarantine in Metro Manila which started on May 1 ended. During this period Green Papaya shared its views through 20 posters (on social media) to reflect not only on what beleaguers our present society due to the pandemic, but also on Papaya’s 20 years as a community of cultural workers. This poster campaign commemorating 20 years of Green Papaya Art Projects was produced by Papaya Office. Papaya Office is an editorial, design and research team formed to work on Papaya’s ongoing and remaining projects. The team has been working from homes since Metro Manila was placed on a total lockdown due to the pandemic starting last March 15. The campaign was launched on May 1 and ran until May 15, 2020. The team has been working primarily on the Papaya archives with Asia Art Archives based in Hong Kong, the VIVA ExCon 2018 Catalogue, and the VIVA ExCon 1990-2016 Community Archives Project. Papaya Office is composed of Merv Espina, Touki Roldan, Dominic Zinampan, Lesley Anne Cao, Yuji de Torres, Jel Suarez, Joaquin Roldan and Norberto Roldan. Printed copies are available in limited editions of 20 / 20 posters (#01 to #20). Size: 20 x 30 inches (unframed), digital print on archival paper, each copy is numbered and dry sealed with Green Papaya 2020 logo.
