This year sees IMMENSE magazine launching an expanded fifth edition! And to celebrate, we’re now proud to deliver our content across three platforms: in a print version, on the web (magazineimmense.com), and in a mobile version that you can download free from the App Store. That means there are now even more ways to plan your next stay in our part of the world and make the most of all we have to offer. We’ve also come up with three discovery itineraries to help you plan: around Lac Saint-Jean from west to east, along the fjord, and to take in the urban buzz. You’ll also want to take a look at the best addresses in town.
2
To get started, just follow one of our itineraries! At the beginning of each trip, you’ll find travel diaries that show off local attractions by area of interest: family, culture, nature, adventure, discovery, and agrotourism. Then you can make a start on a memorable travel diary of your own. Speaking of which, we’d love it if you shared pictures of your trip with us using #SagLac. We can’t wait to see some of what you get up to on your vacation. After all, that’s why we’re doing this—we want you to have a great time in our part of the world! Welcome to our beautiful region from all the team at Tourisme Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. The Tourisme Saguenay– Lac‑Saint-Jean Team

Larger than life adventure Adventure depends not only on the extent of our ambitions, but the environment in which we experience it. Seasonal colour
Just imagine all the kitesurfing sails criss-crossing the air above Baie des Ha! Ha! and Lac Saint-Jean for a choreography of colour that riffs on the blues of summer. Isn’t it fabulous to stop and consider the sheer size of the fjord on a trek across one of its peaks, or the green vastness of the Monts Valin from one headland to the next—and to picture yourself back for a long snowshoeing adventure in winter, tiptoeing past ghostly snow sculptures or across a deserted ice field? Enjoy the thrill of ski resorts that have all the snow you could wish for, as you hurtle through glades or telemark your way down the slopes—knowing that you’ll be back there mountain biking in the summer and fall.
Choose adventure
The lush nature of Saguenay– Lac-Saint-Jean, which includes national parks of Canada and Québec, delivers an outstanding outdoor playground to visitors in search of adrenalin, from dizzyingly high via ferrata and the

freedom that comes with sailing away from it all to a coming together of cultures and the rough and tumble of mighty rivers. There’s something new around every bend as you explore the woods for days on end—on foot, horseback, snowshoes, or dogsled. The Saguenay Fjord saw its first sea kayak 30 years ago and is still a favourite for many kayakers today, with the sport growing in popularity on Lac Saint-Jean and many rivers. All this when the region is also the premier snowmobiling destination in northeastern America, with unmatched facilities and vast territories to discover.
Hungry for more?
Adventure tourists might be looking for the ultimate challenge or maybe even just a change of scenery with the family, but they all have one thing in common: they need a professional business that offers a safe pair of hands as it helps them discover unexplored paths. “Adventure tourism and ecotourism are synonymous with Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean,” says Jean-Michel Hébert, “and both are areas where the region excels. Our businesses are just as passionate about the area as you are—and they’re keen to show off their experience and the finest local spots. But first and foremost they’re professionals, often trained in the finest schools and helping to set professional standards across Québec.” So what adventure will you choose today?
Photo : Charles-David Robitaille
Jean-Michel Hébert of sailing company Voile Mercator is well aware of the region’s charms. He grew up sailing boats along the Saguenay river. “Our strength is being able to offer all-season tourism adventure in a first-rate environment,” he says. “It’s perfect for virtually any activity, all with specialists on hand to make sure everything goes according to plan.”

Saguenay, with its enormous fjord, and Lac-Saint-Jean, with a lake that looks every bit as big as the sea, have everything it takes to guarantee every emotion you can think of—from hairraising and head-turning adventure to every moment that marks a life. The kingdom of blueberries is unimaginably big, with boundless space and forests as well as a slew of mountains, fresh air, rivers, and lakes. And each season brings even more possibilities for adventure, complete with a winter wonderland full of promise and white, open spaces.

Smooth as Glass, Big as a Giant There’s no getting around it: this lake is HUGE. In fact, it’s so big that sometimes the opposite shore can’t be seen by the naked eye. Driving around it means treating yourself to a slideshow of ocean-blue panoramas, while the back country has a flowery palette of its own to enjoy. Spread out the family picnic blanket under an age-old elm tree, then plunge headfirst into the lake or tackle the white waters of the rivers that flow into it.
Don’t miss…
Encircled by a bike path, Lac Saint-Jean is the perfect place for adventure, some R&R, or flavour trail discoveries with a glass or two of wine. One thing is for certain: people of all ages come here to find happiness.

Not so fond of thrills and spills? Go hiking instead. Ways to Discover Val-Jalbert
Visiting the historical village of Val-Jalbert is a trip back to the days when people in the company town worked hard to produce electricity. By bringing the old ghosts from the 1920s back to the future, the village is today more alive than ever.
Did you know?
The Saint-Georges convent school, which turns 100 this year, is the only school of its kind in Québec (with 4 classrooms) to still be standing.

The mayor and the townsfolk
Every day, meet larger-than-life figures outside the convent and inside the old post office and general store. Sitting proudly behind the wheel of his 1928 Dodge, Mr. Mayor never says no to a photo opp.

How about spending the night? Pull up a seat at Restaurant du Moulin, where chef Carl Murray serves up a fine dining experience, terroir style. Then, when evening comes, explore the village with a flashlight before heading to bed. Reaching Out
Setting out to discover an original, different, and welcoming culture doesn’t have to mean hopping continents. On the shores of Lac Saint-Jean, the Ilnu community of Mashteuiatsh is just waiting to be discovered, simple and authentic in equal measure. It’s so close you can reach out and touch it! By YVES OUELLET
22 Immense magazine
The First Nations have been in the Saguenay– Lac-Saint-Jean area for over 5,000 years. The Pekuakamiulnuatsh left an indelible mark on their environment—the Nistassinan—by naming it (Ouiatchouan, Métabetchouan, Mistassibi, Ashuapmushuan, Chicoutimi, Saguenay), occupying it, and establishing a culture that’s still alive today. Mashteuiatsh is an outwardlooking community, proud to share an ancient culture, along with its spiritual life, traditions, and modes of expression both ancestral and contemporary. There are two main ways for visitors to reach out and appreciate these traditions in a whirlwind of dance, tastings, colour, sporting competitions, singing, and entertainment.

To find out what the term First Nations really means, nothing beats a face-to-face meeting, with real human contact. Discovering Mashteuiatsh begins at the Uashassihtsh site and at Carrefour d’accueil Ilnu, where we quickly find ourselves in new surroundings, discovering a way of life founded on preserving traditions and passing on knowledge. You’ll learn more about the relationship with nature and ties that bind the Ilnu to the spiritual world on a hunting and fishing trip to Pourvoirie du réservoir Pipmuacan, or experience something out of the ordinary with a stay at Auberge Maison Robertson, once home to a fur-trading post at the centre of the community. There are plenty of festivals and celebrations to choose from, among them the colourful National Aboriginal Day on June 21 and the prestigious Grand
Rassemblement des Premières Nations, a First Nations gathering, July 10 to 12. Get a taste of tradition for yourself and try some bannock bread or wild game hunted in the forest and then carefully prepared, First Nations style.

Ma r ianne St Gela is lake
She’s been here, there, and everywhere, but Lac-Saint-Jean remains Marianne St-Gelais’ first love. Originally from Saint-Félicien, the speed-skating Olympic medallist comes back home every year to childhood memories and a close-knit family. As soon as she can, Marianne St-Gelais swaps downtown Montréal for the family cabin at Saint-Ludger-de-Milot. “It’s a little in the middle of nowhere, and that’s just great!” admits the speed skater, happy to be back home with her parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and nephews. “It’s where I come to unwind.” No TV or cell phones here. “There’s no signal,” Marianne laughs. “We still boil the water over the fire to do the dishes.” But there’s plenty to do: from swimming in the lake and trail riding on your quad to long evenings spent around the fire. “Nothing happens, but we’re all right there in the present moment.”
A Family Affair
Half of her boyfriend’s family (she lives with speed skater Charles Hamelin) comes from Péribonka, also on the shores of Lac Saint-Jean.

At Fromagerie Médard, three of the four Boivin-Côté children from Saint-Gédéon (Rose-Alice, Étienne, and Justine) are looking ahead to the family’s future. You’ll meet them at the family-run cheese factory, in the greenhouses, and at the bakery. Halfway between Zoo sauvage de Saint-Félicien and Val-Jalbert on the Véloroute des Bleuets bike trail, take a cheese-tasting break at Fromagerie Perron and shoot the breeze with Albert (grandson to Adélard, the man who started the whole cheese-making business) while you stock up on some good old fresh cheddar. Get it while it’s hot at 10 a.m.! At the sound of the bell, Médard family cheddar couldn’t be any fresher—it’s still warm. At Fromagerie au Pays-des-Bleuets in Saint-Félicien, they keep their shoulder close to the cheese wheel. They make cheeses (Desneiges, Bouton d’Or, Roc Bleu, and Petit Délice), they have a butcher’s shop (Chez Ti-John), they run a dairy farm (3J), and they find the time to process berries (Les Petits fruits de Lizon), too. And all with a smile! On the way to Jonquière, drop by Fromagerie Blackburn where Marie-Josée runs the family cheese factory. She’s the woman behind the six signature cheeses, including the famous— and multiple award-winning—Mont-Jacob. Ready-to-eat rose jelly. Leave the car behind and visit the fjord on foot or by bike—it couldn’t be simpler! A water shuttle leaves from no fewer than five pick-up points (Tadoussac, L’Anse-Saint-Jean, Rivière-Éternité, Sainte-Rose-du-Nord, and La Baie) every day, meaning you can come up with your very own cycle route, hopping from one shore to the other depending on how difficult the next portion of the Véloroute du Fjord bike trail is shaping up to be. Croisières du Fjord and its partners have up to nine two- and three-day packages to let you spend your time sea kayaking, hiking, buggying, and sailing. Spend the night right there, at an inn, in one of the region’s 50 cozy B&Bs, at an outfitters, or opt for something more unusual at Parc Aventures Cap Jaseux. You can also hop on the water shuttle just for the fun of it. Seven-day open tickets are available.

There’s nothing ordinary about Musée du Fjord. Not at all! Here, talk turns to history, regional development, and the fjord—as well as the creatures of all kinds who live on land and in the water. What’s so different about this museum? Well, it makes everything fun for a start! So what will wow you most? The aquarium containing 53,000 litres of water and over 675 specimens that live in the fjord? The touch pool where you can reach out and touch a starfish? Or maybe it will be the 3D pictures brought back from the depths of the fjord? There are so many ways to enjoy your interactive trip!

Freedom comes with every journey back home to her roots. And why L’Anse-Saint-Jean? “My partner and I came back up to see the house where his parents and grandparents lived. It was right beside the marina, with the Saguenay river straight ahead. We knocked on the door, and destiny took care of the rest.” No wonder her eyes well up every time she leaves.

Le Montagnais — hôtel multiservice
Aquafun is Megafun!
12,000 sq. ft. of water games!
Le Montagnais is going with the flow again this summer. With 12,000 sq. ft. of water games, the biggest hotel in northeastern Québec (in downtown Saguenay, in the borough of Chicoutimi) likes to dive in and get its feet wet, no matter what the weather is like outside. In a part of the country where everything is huge, mega really does mean mega here. And Le Montagnais delivers big time with Aquafun, an indoor waterpark that the young—and the young at heart—will love. Parents are welcome, too! Here, there’s something for everyone. The kids will make a beeline for the massive indoor pool, with its slides, 33 play structures, and water jets, not forgetting the Super Splash—a giant bucket that releases a flood of water from almost 7 metres down onto the splash pad. Meanwhile, Mom and Dad can take things easy at the health spa. You can meet up again in the

relaxation area, complete with indoor garden and hydrotherapy: an ice-cold waterfall and hammam. Aquafun is free for guests at Le Montagnais. But if you’re just passing through, rest assured that mega doesn’t apply to the prices. Little wonder that eyes at Le Montagnais shine just as brightly as every one of the hotel’s four stars. lemontagnais.qc.ca
