With so much to see and do, it can be daunting to plan a day in this wonderful community. Mayor Jonathan Coté shared his ideal #MadeInNewWest itinerary with us, and it sounds like a great plan!

I like to start any beautiful day in the Royal City by riding bikes along the waterfront over to the Queensborough loop before heading to breakfast at one of the many restaurants in the city. Once fortified, I’ll take the kids to Westminster Pier

Park and spend the afternoon reading in the hammocks at our urban beach with the mighty Fraser River and mountains as a backdrop while they play at the playground or ride bikes near the WOW Westminster public art piece. If there’s time, we’ll fit in a wander through the serene Glenbrooke Ravine

Park . After grabbing a gelato and a snack at River Market , we’ll head over to Anvil Centre and check out the innovative exhibits at the New Media Gallery or take in some of our vibrant history at the New Westminster Museum and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. You can time your day to indulge in dinner and catch a flick before ending the day with a pint of craft at the brewery or one of our many local pubs.

Located in the heart of Downtown New Westminster, El Santo has been a welcome and much lauded addition to city’s burgeoning culinary scene, offering fresh and innovative Mexican cuisine with a farm to table, West Coast approach. Experienced Chef Shane King teamed up with owner Alejandro Diaz first and foremost because of their shared love of true Mexican food. “The regionality of it, the freshness of it, the love that goes into the making of that food – that is incomparable,” says King. Farm-to-table has always been incredibly important to King as it ensures freshness and quality. “We’re right on the cusp of some of the greatest growing areas in the Lower Mainland, so we try and incorporate as many local farmers as possible in all of our menu items.” King’s appreciation and reverence for the history behind the flavours is incorporated in his signature dishes. One of his signature dishes is the Tijuana 1924, a unique take on a Caesar salad with grilled romaine hearts, chile dusted chicharrón, charred lemon vinaigrette, pumpkin seeds, and manchego cheese. “The Caesar salad was a Mexican invention,” he says. “It was invented in 1924 in Tijuana, Mexico by accident.” His contemporary style is even more evident in his signature entrée, the Pescado a la Veracruzana. This incredible dish is a blend of East meets West. Servers present an incredible feast for your eyes and palates: a whole BC-caught ocean perch is dusted in rice flour, seared and finished in the oven until crispy and served on a Veracruzana sauce with capers, olives, tomatoes, chile, cilantro pesto and green rice.

What pairs best with Chef King’s signature dishes? The answer is obvious: tequila. “The tequilas we’ve chosen, we’ve chosen because they are good with our food,” says Diaz. Indeed, El Santo boasts an impressive selection—over 60—of 100% agave tequilas; as well as an enviable mezcal selection that is constantly growing. Try a flight of each! The upscale designed interior is welcoming and is available seven days a week for lunch or dinner. Visit El Santo at 680 Columbia Street. Call 604.553.1849 for reservations, including a sectioned room perfect for your group.

Meet the Brewmaster Hidden under an overpass in the industrial part of New Westminster’s West End, is a small but inviting tasting room staffed with friendly and knowledgeable beer enthusiasts. With an incredible and unique sleek wooden counter top and adjustable height accessible tables, Steel and Oak staff will proudly fill your glasses and growlers with their award-winning beer while spinning an eclectic and growing mix of records.

Established in the summer of 2013, Steel & Oak Brewing Co. is New West’s first and only craft brewery—and it’s not hard to see why it has so quickly become the pride of the city. “This is New West’s brewery,” says Eric Moutal, who takes the reigns as brewmaster from outgoing German-trained Peter Schulz. Eric believes the community is a driving force behind the atmosphere that can be found at the brewery. “People are proud to be from New West and everybody really pools together to support it. You don’t feel that same city pride anywhere else.” And that mutual appreciation for the community they call home is palpable. Known for its flagship beer, the Royal City Ale, it is clear that Steel & Oak is also able to pay homage to the long established brewing roots of the city. Along with the flagship RCA, you can find awardwinning brews Dark Lager and Smoked Hefeweizen, dry-hopped ESB, approachable Red Pilsner, and other thoughtfully produced top-notch beers in their tasting room, pubs, and private liquor stores. Eric started with the company nearly two years ago in the tasting room, and within his first week, found himself in the back of house, cleaning kegs and learning from Peter. It was exactly where he wanted to be - honing his skills. Like many brewmasters, Eric was originally a homebrewer. Now at the helm of the brewing team at Steel & Oak, he has big plans. He wants to bring more of a West Coast feel to things and use ingredients that aren’t necessarily so traditional. “I like keeping those flavours very subtle so you can barely tell they’re there,” he says. “You can’t quite put your finger on it, but you know you like it.” “I feel the market has reached peak hop,” he smiles. “I want a very drinkable beer, not an IPA that’s 120 IBUs. There are some good ones out there, but that’s not the focus at Steel & Oak.” Be a part of the #SOBEER world! Visit the tasting room, buy their swag, book a tour, and follow them on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook @ steelandoak. Cheers!
