In the beginning

H I S L I T T L E S P OT, WAY U P I N the Monashee Mountains of the Columbia Range, was always destined for greatness. Millions of years ago, it was already hot property – literally – the geology of this area includes Jurassic-aged volcanic rock. For those in the know, that meant treasure! Yes, it was Red Mountain’s shimmering ore, a virtual Eldorado near the international boundary ’twixt Canada and the U.S.A that lit the beacon of the Kootenays. The glittering treasure, the jewel in the hat, the bacon in the fry pan drew gold-seekers and fortune hunters from around the world. The rush was on! After gold was discovered, the early 1890s saw thousands of speculators, hucksters and seasoned miners scrambling over mountain passes, one another and their own beloved mothers to stake a claim in the as-yet-unnamed burg. >>

AV V Y, S H R E W D A N D W I LY, A N E A R LY arrival to the scene was one Ross Thompson. While his peers busied themselves with pick and axe, Thompson asked himself how best to pick the prospect for his own eventual fortune. No townsite had thus far been claimed, and Ross Thompson was just the man to do it, to deed it, to put his stamp and name on it. Sadly, “Thompson” was already taken, so Ross did the next best thing and assigned his given name to this nascent city in the wilderness. The land of Ross was born – Rossland and its mines soon-to-be heralded as boomtown money makers throughout the western world. Storefronts, many still in use today, began to pop up along Columbia Avenue where they were stocked with beer, whiskey, cigars and more whiskey, beer and cigars, along with less important items like clothing and food. Several local breweries and over 40 saloons, pubs and parlour hotels kept the population civil. Initially the almost-exclusive domain of grizzled miners, the Dewdney Trail and sternwheeler landings on the Columbia River began to facilitate the arrival of families, businesses and cultural refinement. A wagon road and rail lines continued to feed goods into town while simultaneously moving high-grade ore down the hill for smelting. Trail Landing, eventually shortened to just “Trail,” became home to a large smelting operation that has continued its operations for over a hundred years. And while the gold extraction eventually slowed, Rossland persevered and found new lines to mine in its mountains – the white gold – our dry, light powder snow. Yes, amidst all the hubbub and bottomless romance of candlelit twelve-hour shifts underground, the early miners still had the energy to partake in skiing! Olaus Jeldness, whose statue stands guard at the corner of Columbia and Washington streets, is largely credited with introducing ski jumping and winter sport to Rossland. His immortal, bronzed vantage point grants him saintly status over area skiers and mountainbound hitchhikers alike. A safe, friendly place to hang your hat or dry your boots, Rossland continues to be a terrific community to visit or to settle in, a destination for dreams and dreamers to pull up a chair and stay a while.

The gold mines closed in 1929, and there were three large and disasterous fires in the downtown area in 1902, 1927 and 1929. The first was on Spokane St. The others destroyed many buildings along both sides of Columbia Avenue bringing to a close a productive and exciting era. With so many buildings constructed of wood, fire was always a threat to Rossland; many fine structures have been lost forever – churches, hotels, halls, schools and the area known as Chinatown. The sudden onslaught of construction was a declaration of the pioneers’ healthy optimism. The wooden composition of the buildings reflected the spontaneity of the boom town. The vernacular “Western False Front” architecture which characterized most western boom towns was the most popular style. Several large buildings were erected composed of brick, stone and granite from a city quarry. These buildings offered a refreshing permanence and a confident stability to the newly erected town. Rossland’s Heritage Register included 29 buildings and 13 sites – many of which are included in the Heritage Walking Tour.

WEST KOOTENAY SUBSTATION 1817 Planer Cres. In 1898, the West Kootenay Power and Light Co. first delivered electrical power to Rossland over a 32-mile-long, 20,000-volt line from Bonnington Falls on the Kootenay River – the longest and highest voltage transmission line in the world at the time. This brick substation sheltered the transformers and equipment required to step down and deliver power to the city and the mines. The substation was replaced in 1929. This building is currently a private residence.

ROSSLAND CITY HALL/FIRE HALL 2115 Queen St. One of the prime reasons for Rossland’s incorporation in 1897 was the growing need for better fire protection. In early 1900, construction of this brick building was completed. The three large arched doors guaranteed quick departure from the hall. Horses, which pulled the hose cars, were kept in stables in the back. The upper floor was used for city offices and council chambers as well as sleeping rooms for the firemen. In 1961, the original hose tower was removed and in 1991 it was reinstalled as a result of an application to make the building a provincial Firefighters Museum. The city offices moved to a new location on Columbia Ave in 1987. Today, the main floor of the building is a restaurant. The upper level was made into three condominium units.

Exterior renovations have disguised the fact that the Agnew & Co. building was constructed in two stages, first in 1899 and then expanded in 1901. Demolition of a portion of the 1899 building occurred in 1939, creating the footprint and building we see today. Since 1939, it has seen many uses. Today it houses the Rossland Inn.

Since 1983 it has been the home of the Rossland Light Opera Players which was founded in 1951 and is believed to be the oldest musical theatre company in British Columbia. In 2013, a major restoration project of the building’s facade was undertaken with authentic reproduction of original details along with new paint on trim and walls.

GLAZAN BLOCK 1916 First Ave. This brick building was built in 1902 as a new and used furniture store. It was the first brick building to be built after the 1902 fire which destroyed all of the buildings on either side of Spokane Avenue between Columbia Ave. and 1st St. In 1909 the building was purchased by the BC Telephone Co., and used as Rossland’s telephone exchange until 1958 when an automated exchange was installed on Columbia Avenue. The City purchased the building for a dollar and it has been the home of the Semior Citizens’ Association since. In 2018 the 1960s stucco covering of the front of the building was removed and the original brick facade restored.

Honeyman-designed Rossland Courthouse is designated a National Historic site of Canada. The Miners Hall is a worthy visit, too, with ongoing arts and culture programming breathing life into the volunteer-built and managed building. Dating back to 1898, this national historic site is said to play host to a handful of phantoms, though visitors are more likely to encounter musical theatre performers during the summer Gold Fever Follies run. Set during the boom years of Rossland’s heyday, the Follies shows are adept at capturing a farcical, musical take on events both true and wholly fictitious. As with all things purporting to be historical, it is the audience that will have to determine what’s best to believe. 19

COLLINS HOTEL 2038 Washington St. The Collins Hotel, built in 1896, was one of 40 hotels in early Rossland. It had a barroom, three clubrooms, a large dining room and a large kitchen on the main floor. There were 14 bedrooms. In 1934, Jack Hackney bought both the Hoffman House and the Collins Hotel and ran Hackney’s Hardware in both premises with accommodation above. It continued as a hardware store under three owners into the 1990s. Today, the main floor is a commercial enterprise with apartments in the upper floors.

HOFFMAN HOUSE 2044 Washington St. Built in 1896 by Harry McIntosh, the Hoffman House is representative of a larger hotel at the turn of the century in Rossland. The Hoffman House was considered the best hotel in the district boasting a dining room, club rooms, a bar room, 30 bedrooms and four bowling alleys in the rear. The bowling alleys were destroyed by fire in 1913. Ownership and use of the Hoffman House changed many times over the past 120 years. From 1934 to 2009 it was a hardware store under several owners.

BODEGA HOTEL 2054 Washington St. Erected in 1896 or 1897, the Bodega was a hotel and saloon. After the gold mining days ended, the Bodega Hotel was used for a variety of business enterprises such as a jewelry store and restaurant on

ST. ANDREW’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 2100 First Ave. The first Presbyterian service in Rossland was held in 1895 by Rev. Robertson in a store on Sour Dough Alley using planks laid on kegs for pews. This building was constructed in 1898 as a Presbyterian Church under the direction of Rev. Gandier. St. Andrew’s became a United Church in 1925 when the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational faiths amalgamated. Its stately presence with tall spire and red, metal-clad roof, one block up a steep hill, makes it a Rossland landmark.

BELLEVUE HOTEL 2003 Second Ave. Originally called the Bellevue Hotel and later the C.P.R., this hotel was built in 1897 and was named the Orwell Hotel in 1903. Situated across from the C.P.R. station, the Orwell was a popular drinking establishment for men returning from work on the afternoon railway. Since 1992, this building has been called The Flying Steamshovel, with a pub on the main floor and hotel rooms on the upper floors.

MUNN’S BAKERY 1999 Second Ave. Alex Munn opened a bake shop in this store in 1902. In the 1920s it became Mrs. Bailey’s Confectionary Store, a popular stop for many children on their way home from school. Subsequently, the building served as a corner store operated by various owners until its closure in the 1970s. Today, this is the site of a local restaurant – Idgie’s.

AGNEW & CO. 2253 Washington St. For 40 years, 1899-1939, the Agnew & Co., business served the

LIQUOR STORE 2063 Washington St. This building housed a number of businesses throughout the years, including a liquor store, a shoe store, a butcher shop and the Washington Apartments. Today, it has a bookstore on the main floor and a residence on the upper floor.

HUNTER BROTHERS STORE 1990 Columbia Ave. Constructed in 1905, the building housed the Hunter Brothers Department Store until 1959. During a time when most businesses were small and more specialized, Hunter Bros. was diversified, catering to housewives, miners and businesses alike. Since 1959, it has been a department store, a grocery store and a hardware store. In 2014, the interior was divided into separate retail spaces with their own street accesses on Columbia Ave. and Washington St.

KAMLOOPS MINING & DRILLING CO. 1854 Columbia Ave. The Kamloops Mining & Drilling Co. was built in 1895 or 1896. The ground floor housed a variety of businesses including a cigar manufacturing shop. It was later converted into separate apartments.

B.C.'s foremost institutional architect, Francis Rattenbury, designed the original Bank of Montreal building at the corner

By 1898 Rossland was booming. There were four banks, seven newspapers, a stock exchange and 42 saloons doing business 24 hours a day. The International Music Hall and Opera House provided places for touring vaudeville shows, prize fights and classic opera. Hotel rooms cost as much as $10 a night and those who couldn’t afford the luxury could rent a chair at the International for $1 and stay until morning. TTRACTED BY THE DISCOVERY OF GOLD in the Red Mountain area, a man named Ross Thompson, who Rossland was later named for, arrived at the Rossland camp in 1891. Convinced of the camp’s bright future, Thompson acquired a crown grant for a pre-emption of 160 acres which soon became the City of Rossland. The call of gold echoed across the land – the rush was on! The population exploded as prospectors and entrepreneurs poured into town seeking their fortunes. And fortune there was. The biggest mine, the LeRoi, grossed over $30 million dollars, $1.2billion in 2018 dollars.

BANK OF MONTREAL 2004 Columbia Ave. Built between 1898 and 1899, the bank was one of five major Canadian banks competing in Rossland. This magnificent brick building provided a refreshing permanence amongst a sea of wooden structures. The cornerstone bears the altitude bench mark of 3410 feet above sea level. F. M. Rattenbury, the architect, also designed the Parliament buildings in Victoria. J.S.C. Fraser was the manager of the Bank of Montreal until 1912 and played an important role in both the business and social life of early Rossland. The Bank sold the building in 2000 and it has since become the home of various commercial enterprises.

L IT T L E MO R E than twenty five years ago, the first mountain bikers in Rossland began to repurpose old mining trails and rights of way to suit their needs. Where cast-iron fry pans had dangled from early prospectors’ saddlebags, this new brand of adventurer rode light and fast, with tin canteens exchanged for hydration packs and mining claims for trail maps. Using the old roads and paths that led to dormant mines, these pioneers carved out spur-lines and ventricles through the arteries of the Rossland front and backcountry. Today, the trail-building torch has been largely taken up by the Kootenay Columbia Trail Society (KCTS), enthusiasts and

The IMBA Epic 35-km Seven Summits Trail is the jewel in Rossland’s mountain biking crown self-described “regular folk” who have a passion for the mountains, their town, and the trails that connect them. From pump ’n’ swoop on Technogrind to the radical rock slabs of Sudden Exposure, we’ve got the spectrum of fun on a bike covered. For a day ride that’s a fair bit flatter than the Seven Summits, the Columbia and Western Rail Trail (CWRT) is a world-class ride on an abandoned Canadian Pacific Railway line. The CWRT covers 162 kilometres from Castlegar to Midway, B.C. This well-maintained trail will take you over trestles, past the Arrow Lakes and through hand-dug rock tunnels, giving you a taste of our history. The CWRT is part of the Trans Canada Trail, the world’s longest network of trails.

RANDED THE BULKIER COUSIN OF SUMMER and shoulder season mountain biking, fat biking has solidified its wide-load stance in the Rossland winter-biking scene. True, these wide-tired behemoths can be pedaled four seasons of the year, but they really strut their stuff in the winter months. Just ask the growing number of committed devotees in their frosted goatees — thumbs up and high fives thrown out as they navigate a handful of packed and groomed fat-bike-friendly paths. Chubby rubber tires are welcome on several Rossland trails. Powered by single-track machine-groomed technology and single-minded enthusiasts that can’t shelve their bikes for the winter, the volunteer corps maintain select routes, with the fat-bikes’ cult-following maturing into another niche sport embraced on the Rossland sports-scape. Rentals and gear are available at Revolution Cycles and Get Lost Adventure Centre along with lots of advice and info on what trails are good to ride at the moment. S THE TERM MIGHT SUGGEST, road biking is a bicycling activity that takes place upon the road. No mere road surface will do though, gravel and water-barred forestry roads not up to the discerning standards of avowed road biking enthusiasts. Smooth blacktop and unmarred pavement are their preferred habitat, thus the plumed North American variety and their Tour de France viewing cousins are equally at home on area highways and byways. An especially popular route is Rossland to

The region offers hundreds of kilometres of quiet mountain roads Strawberry Pass via Nancy Greene Lake. This route is favoured by triathletes and skinny dippers as the lake provides a terrific stopping point to either smash out laps, or go swimming amidst some strategically placed aquatic foliage.

Other popular options include Waneta to Rossland, Rossland to Paterson, Trail to Fruitvale via Columbia Gardens, and so on. Be forewarned, though – an old-timey Penny Farthing bicycle won’t be up to the task, leg strength alone unlikely to speed you up the alternatingly steep or moderate area climbs. Revolution Cycles in Rossland and Gerick’s in Trail offer road bike sales and service and carry a few for rental as well. Several group rides occur weekly depending on the season, with no pressure to compete at EPO augmented levels.

O S S L A N D ’ S M O D E R N residents have benefited immensely from the efforts of early pioneers and industry. Never mind the foresight to establish designated horse hitching and dogparking zones, a prime example is the 150-km-plus trail network that originates in town and piggybacks on many of the first transportation routes. Our trails snake their way through the surrounding backcountry and through much of the town. Maintaining greened corridors and pedestrian-friendly routes encourages an active community, and assists in ticking off those final pesky steps on your Fit-Bit. While the wagon road and rail grade are self-explanatory, the Old Glory trail leads hikers and runners to the highest peak in the Rossland Range, where a small cadre of meteorologists monitored the weather and fire situation for decades. Perched atop a mountain and often working around the clock in three eight-hour shifts, these brave weathermen operated in often-harrowing conditions, their primary supply line to town being the O.G trail. Nowadays you needn’t hold a degree in meteorology to retrace this well-marked route, in fact, even a loose understanding of astrology will more than equip you for the trek. Still, it’s recommended you pack a map and other hiking essentials and not leave things to chance whatever your daily horoscope may say. Whether your goal is to summit Plewman, to run the 50-km Seven Summits trail as in the full-sized Broken Goat race, or your aim is to head out for a peaceful forest bath in preserved stands of old-growth or saunter one of the many trails surrounding town, the Rossland area hiking and trail running options won’t disappoint. Hydrate, hike, snack, rinse and repeat.

A terrific hoof through the woods, the Thin Air disc golf course is the product of innumerable volunteer hours spent planning and building an eighteen-basket course on and around the Black Jack cross-country ski area. ED, GRANITE, GREY AND KIRKUP mountains are all impressive in their own rights, but taken in sum and dosed with a heaping helping of pow, and a mere sprinkling of people, makes the whole experience downright, down-home spiritual. You will be glad you came here, heart on your sleeve, banjo on your knee. Whatever you’re into for downhill sliding, our local resort has got you covered. And RED just got even radder. The long-time favourite of powder-hounds and fall-line aficionados continues to climb through the big leagues with yet another addition of new terrain for its guests to recreate on. The Topping Chair expansion opening for the 2019/20 season adds to RED Mountain’s stature, putting it in the Top 10, size-wise, for North America, with total skiable acreage at 3,850. High performance rentals? You bet. Terrain park? There is one, but it plays second fiddle to natural terrain. Take a look around! There are two fully serviced day lodges (Base and Paradise), and RED has the best après ski bar in Western Canada. (It’s called Rafters and it’s where you go to eat nachos amidst steaming base layers and sunburns).

O YOU LIKE CATS? Well, Rossland is more of a dogfriendly town, but if you’re talking about backcountry access you’ll find yourself in good company. Big Red Cats operates up to five snowcats daily through the winter. Offering intermediate, advanced, expert and “uber expert” skill-level groupings, BRC is a fixture in the area and their return clientele raves about the experience. Speaking mostly in sound effects, the average guest bounces between pow and whoosh and braaaap as seamlessly as the turns they claim to have linked on their descent down a signature BRC zone. See bigredcatskiing.com. Or, are you more of a self-starter keen on earning your turns? Do you like the suffering up prior to the euphoric down? It’s true that you can get yourself to the top of some pretty classy mountains in the Rossland Range, whether in the slackcountry off Red or through paths and channels less known. Locals are somewhat guarded when it comes to their stashes, but connecting with the right people and possessing the right mindset you can more

than scratch the surface of what the Rossland Range has to offer. Come fully equipped, check your ego, get a map and find some friends. There’s a lot of terrain out here and it’s fully worthy of your respect and time. For folks seeking a more casual experience, day-use cabins built and maintained by the Friends of the Rossland Range are peppered

around the local mountains and are linked together by self-set tracks, with bush skis and light-touring setups the recommended mode of conveyance. Care to move at a slower pace? Snowshoeing can get you where you need to be, with a maintained trail system and rental options available.

ROSSING THE ENTIRE COUNTRY while on skis is a feat not yet accomplished. While training for this goal, though, or for the pure joy of recreating, Rossland has ample opportunities for cross-country skiers. Classic and skate-ski aficionados will be impressed with the groomed loops and network of trails at the Black Jack Ski Club, and the warming huts and equipment rental services available there. It boasts 40 kilometres of professionally groomed trails, a biathlon range, a doggy loop and 2.5 kms of lit trails. There’s a variety of beginner, intermediate and expert terrain, and the folks you’ll meet will remind you once again that you’re in a special part of the world.

At its best, this natural terrain compares to what you might experience heli-skiing. You see, RED is blessed with a unique topography that allows 360-degree access off Granite Mountain and ~270-degree access off the top of Red and Grey Mountain. Where shift-working miners used to hot-sheet in bunk beds stacked three high, modern amenities and accommodations are light years beyond our old-time predecessors’ wildest dreams. No more slugging back whisky as a soporific in the hopes it might drown out one-eyed Jack’s incessant snoring. These days we have climate-controlled comfort at the foot of the mountain and in town.
