Charlie Clark

Mayor, City of Saskatoon Over twenty years ago, when I first visited Saskatoon, I didn’t know quite what to expect. I’d heard all of the stereotypes—the ones about being able to see your dog run away for three days and about winter and construction being the only two seasons—but I quickly came to realize that the real story of Saskatoon was about the people who bring this place to life, and it’s what made me want to stay here to live and raise a family. The people of Saskatoon make us into the community that we are: the people who run, walk, and enjoy the beautiful Meewasin river valley, the people who own and frequent our unique stores and shopping districts, the people who volunteer and perform at our different festivals and arts venues, and the people who have helped our food and pub scene to blossom over the past few years. Since that time of my first visit, Saskatoon has grown into an important tourist destination in our country. We are no longer a secret in the Canadian prairies, but we’re gaining international attention for the Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan, Wanuskewin Heritage Park, and the research and innovation coming out of the beautiful University of Saskatchewan campus. Saskatoon is a community that was gracious enough to welcome me here over twenty years ago, and now it is my pleasure to welcome you here to the place that I am proud to call home. Enjoy your stay, and please visit again soon.

Todd Brandt

President and CEO, Tourism Saskatoon Saskatoon is home to many incredible experiences. From celebrity chefs creating dishes with locally grown and foraged ingredients, to a river valley in the heart of the city that you can float or paddle along, to a rich Indigenous history and culture that weaves through our neighbourhoods and attractions. There are many destinations in this country with wonderful experiences, but as visitors increasingly want to travel more like a local, they need to interact with those that live here. As you meet our locals (we call ourselves Saskatonians), we know you will feel the welcoming spirit of Saskatoon, and the people you meet will become part of your memories of this place. Visitors to our city often leave transformed by the experiences that they share with the people that they meet during their time in our city. We look forward to you making your own lifelong memories and friends during your visit to Saskatoon.

NATURE Find Serenity in our Natural City

Crocus @meghanmickelson

SPRING: The air smells green,

MEET NOLA

and colour has popped. I love to take a bike ride every spring to see the Meewasin Valley come alive! The best part about the trail is the exploring you can do from almost any neighbourhood in the city. No matter which direction you Redbreasted Nuthatch go the scenery is stunning. I am partial @meghanmickelson to the vistas along the southeast bank from Gabriel Dumont Park to Chief Whitecap Park. After turning off Spadina Crescent, the park opens to views up and downstream of the river lasting the entire 8 km (5 miles) to Chief Whitecap. I love to take in the scenery in hopes of catching the migrating birds, a sure sign of spring. I usually see one of my favourites, the Sandhill Cranes, but I often hold out hope of seeing a Great Blue Heron! As you continue biking south through Chief Whitecap Park the bike trip ends at the life-size statue of Chief Wapahaska (by Lloyd Pinay). This round-trip bike ride from downtown takes about 80 minutes, depending of course, how long you stop to take in the scenery! Spring time also brings the NatureCity Festival (May 21 - 26, 2019), a great way to connect or reconnect with our incredible surroundings through guided tours, inspiring talks, and field trips revealing hidden gems.

10 | #SASKATOONing

Nola has always been one for getting out and playing in the mud. Growing up in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, she had the opportunity to explore the outdoors endlessly (as long as she was home before the street lights came on!). Her love of exploring the outdoors is what grew into a career in the field of landscape architecture, and with over 20 years of experience, Nola finds inspiration in exploring natural and built spaces. When she’s not working she is found playing soccer, ultimate, or exploring new and old places in and around Saskatoon.

Beaver Creek @wildernook

SUMMER: It smells like flowers

and sounds like music. There is so much I love about summer, especially Ultimate (frisbee) and the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. Almost every weekend there is something do to in the city, from sporting events to beer and food festivals. I love the festivals, but I Photo by Louis Christ also like to get out for a hike to spot that rare Western Red Lily in bloom. There are many places to go for a hike a short 15 to 20-minute drive south of the city to Cranberry Flats or Beaver Creek Conservation Area, or head to the north end and explore the Meewasin Northeast Swale, a gem of a place. There is so much to see and take in at the Swale: the pinned rock, the telegraph line that linked North America with Europe via Yellow Warbler @meghanmickelson Russia, and the diversity of wildlife. This remnant river channel is home to more than 200 plant species, more than 100 birds, various mammals, and lots of water loving creatures. I love exploring this place with over 4 km (2.5 miles) of trails that are not for the faint of heart. If you head out this direction make sure you bring your hat and some water‌this is a prairie experience! #SASKATOONing | 11

Sandhill Cranes @meghanmickelson

FALL: The air is crisp, and the harvest sunsets are

breathtaking. The river valley has morphed from that rich green of summer to the warmth of fall colours! Fall is my favourite time to take a drive through the prairies. My driving tour: head north following the river for some stunning prairie scenery to our first stop - the Clarkboro Ferry! If you haven’t taken a ferry in Saskatchewan, you need to… you might even get to blow the horn! Once you’ve crossed the river head back to the city for a tour on the Prairie Lily – a stupendous way to see and learn about Saskatoon and the river valley. There is still lots of time left and I know you are yearning for more, so head out to The Glen at Crossmount Cider Company to try a flight of Saskatoon-made cider. It’s been a full day of touring the city from north to south so why not stop for a delicious bite to eat at one of my personal favourites downtown, Taverna!

FOUR AWESOME WILDLIFE WATCHING SPOTS Northeast Swale – great for all kinds of wildlife, be sure to bring your binoculars.

Long-tailed Weasel @meghanmickelson

12 | #SASKATOONing

Lakewood Park – great birding spot in the heart of the urban city.

Meewasin Valley Trails @amber_df

WINTER: The season of crackling air and sparkly snow. There are so many things

to do in the winter it’s hard to choose. Fat tire biking, kiteboarding, snowshoeing, skating at the Meewasin rink? My personal favourite is cross-country skiing because there are so many places a hop, skip, and a jump from my front door. Hitting any one of the groomed trails mid-morning when the sky is clear, and the sun is shining bright is the perfect weekend treat. Saskatoon has eight groomed trails to enjoy for free! My favourites are Kinsmen Park (managed by the Nordic Ski Club) for a great workout and Gordie Howe (managed by the City of Saskatoon) for the scenery (and of course the endorphins!). After a morning ski, stop in for some refuelling at Drift Café or Hometown Diner, both in the Riversdale neighbourhood. If you have more than a couple of hours, head out to Ebs Trails, 70 minutes north of Saskatoon near Duck Lake, with over 75 km (47 miles) of ski trails. This is the perfect introduction to the glory of Saskatchewan’s northern boreal landscape.

Cranberry Flats – just a great spot to connect with nature.

The Weir – a popular fishing spot for pelicans and humans!

ARTS & CULTURE By Craig Silliphant Photo by Craig Silliphant Nutrien Playland at Kinsmen Park

I’ve spent almost two decades covering the arts and entertainment scene in Saskatoon. Mr. Saskatoon, they call me. (They actually don’t). I have been just as likely to be found wearing a band t-shirt, bobbing my head at an ear-splitting show in a dark club as I have wearing a tie and waxing philosophical, perusing modern art in a brightly lit gallery.

Nutrien WinterShines

MEET CRAIG

These days, I’m even more likely to be spotted taking my kids to one of our many diverse museums or festivals. Through this myriad of art and entertainment, we become informed, delighted, and best of all, our very souls are fed. Let me take you on a tour of some of the best bits of arts and entertainment of my Saskatoon.

14 | #SASKATOONing

Craig Silliphant is a writer, editor, critic, broadcaster, and creative director. He covers film, music, food, the arts, and Saskatoon, among other things. His work has appeared on a variety of local and national outlets, like Rawlco Radio, The Feedback Society, The National Post, CBC, and CTV. Craig lives in Saskatoon with his wife, son, and daughter. He enjoys all the meats of our cultural stew. No matter what he says, he is NOT known as Mr. Saskatoon.

Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival

Nutrien Children's Festival

FESTIVALS

In Saskatoon we love our festivals, from the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival to Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan. But we also have a wealth of culture year-round in some of our smaller festivals. I’d call them hidden gems, but they each have passionate followings that number in the thousands. In the late summer/early fall, The Saskatchewan Entertainment Expo (SaskExpo) showcases all things pop culture and comic book with media guests, cool art, toy and t-shirt vendors, and lots of cosplay. Around the same time of year, Nuit Blanche invites people to roam the streets and experience art in many forms as a free, all-ages night-time arts festival. Once temperatures drop and the snow flies, you don’t want to miss Winterruption, The Broadway Theatre’s multi-day, multi-venue winter festival and excellent incentive to come out of hibernation for amazing live performances and cultural events. And of course, in the summer we have the Nutrien Children’s Festival of Saskatchewan. Music, puppetry, games, you name it - the kids (and even the adults) have a blast.

ENTERTAINING PLACES TO TAKE KIDS THAT ADULTS WILL LOVE TOO

ONE:

The WDM My son loves the Western

Development Museum (WDM), so we have a family pass. They had him at ‘giant train.’ The family can go there in the winter and soak up Boomtown history while the kids have space to run around. And we love the Christmas Tree, wreath, and gingerbread house displays during the “Festival of Trees” event.

TWO: Remai Modern I take my son with

me to look at the gallery art, but his real love is for the learning studio. Certain days of the week, it's set up for arts and crafts - the whole family digs in and creates art together.

THREE: Nutrien Playland at Kinsmen Park

Children love the mini train, the playground, and the merry-goround, but the Ferris wheel wins. It’s a (safe) thrilling high-wire adventure for a little kid, but a chance for a beautiful view of the city (it makes for a wicked Instagram photo too!).

FOUR: The Nutrien Children’s Discovery Museum Opening in 2019, this

world-class destination for all ages is a clever repurposing of the historic Mendel Building. Besides being a hands-on playfest, it also pays tribute to Saskatchewan’s icons in an interactive and educational way.

FIVE: Amigos Hey man, you’ve had a

long day. Amigos is a great, downto-earth place to wind down. At night it’s a bar with some of the best live music in Canada, but during the day, it’s a family-friendly neighbourhood hangout.

DIVERSE LOCAL THEATRE

With venues like the Remai Arts Centre (home to Persephone Theatre) and The Refinery (home to Live Five), live theatre thrives in Saskatoon. However, the cool thing about theatre is that it can happen almost anywhere, and Saskatoon has its share of ardent thespians. Keep your eye out for pop-up productions, like Sum Theatre’s summer ‘Theatre in the Park’ which travels around the city doing free professional productions in different parks. These types of quality productions and venues for a diverse cast of voices abound. La Troupe du Jour, produces French language theatre, usually with English subtitles. Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre is about innovative cultural and theatrical experiences, built to empower First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people while also engaging the community at large with great storytelling. At the centre of five different theatre companies that come together to produce powerful seasons is Live Five Independent Theatre. This is where you’ll see a lot of the professional actors honing their crafts. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention The Saskatoon Soaps, improv royalty. The Soaps are a Saskatoon institution, doing monthly shows from The Broadway Theatre. Formed in 1984, they’re celebrating 35 seasons, which makes them one of North America’s longest running improv troupes.

WANUSKEWIN

In Cree, Wanuskewin means “seeking peace of mind”. It’s a beautiful place, where you’ll find visitors from all over the world enjoying a transformative experience that brings people closer to history. It’s been a gathering place for over 6400 years! There’s also the Wanuskewin Interpretive Centre, which features cultural exhibits, contemporary art, and interpretive programs. There’s a restaurant that serves traditional foods like bison and saskatoon berries. And there’s a great gift shop, filled with handmade clothing, jewellery, and art. Wanuskewin is also building toward the future, and by 2020, they’ll launch new cutting-edge exhibit spaces, research and education labs, fine arts residencies, conference spaces, retail space, and live herd of bison. They’re also working toward a UNESCO World Heritage Designation (you know, like Stonehenge or the Grand Canyon, company Wanuskewin deserves to be in). There’s a lot going on at Wanuskewin and yet, it’s still a place to relax and reflect.

MODERN ART

Just as Wanuskewin connects us to the past through contemporary perspectives, so does Saskatoon’s treasure trove of modern art spaces. Of course, you need to see the Remai Modern, Saskatoon’s world-class facility. I’ve been to museums all over the world, from New York to Paris and beyond, and it’s so cool to have a facility like the Remai here. Celebrating a variety of media is PAVED Arts, an artist-run, new media arts centre (PAVED is an acronym for what they focus on: Photography, Audio, Video, Electronic and Digital). They democratize art, putting the tools to make it in people’s hands. In the same building, is AKA Gallery, another artist run centre with a gallery, screening and performance space. Both PAVED and AKA do workshops, events, and exhibitions throughout the year. SCYAP Art Centre and Gallery (Saskatoon Community Youth Arts Programming) engages at-risk youth through art and creation, and their programming includes workshops, free art dropin and DIY exhibition space. Many of the murals you see around the city were created by these artists. There are many more galleries than this that you should seek out --including several spaces at the University of Saskatchewan, like The Gordon Snellgrove Gallery, a teaching space and public gallery, and The Kenderdine Gallery, which hosts the University of Saskatchewan’s permanent art #SASKATOONing | 17

FOOD SCENE By Jenn Sharp

When it comes to Saskatchewan-grown food, we’ve really got it all. I’m not just talking about lentils, mustard and wheat either. Orchardists coax stunningly flavoured berries like sea buckthorn and haskap from the land, while farmers raise grass-fed cows and bison. Our northern lands are full of crystal clear lakes teeming with fish, while the forests are home to some of the world’s best chanterelle and morel mushrooms. Oh, and 25% of Canada’s honey comes from Saskatchewan.

INDIGENOUS CUISINE

MEET JENN

This region’s Indigenous history is rich and varied. One of the best ways of learning about a culture is via the palate, so head out to Wanuskewin Heritage Park’s restaurant. Executive chef Kirk Borchardt works with the park’s elders to better understand traditional ingredients. He brings forward those ingredients in a respectful manner, creating contemporary dishes well-suited to the restaurant’s casual atmosphere.

18 | #SASKATOONing

Jenn Sharp was raised on a grain farm near Craik, Saskatchewan and is passionate about agriculture and food’s origins. She’s a food columnist for The Saskatoon StarPhoenix, CBC Saskatchewan and Eat North. Her first book, titled Flat Out Delicious: Food Artisans of Saskatchewan, will be published by TouchWood Editions in 2020.

The blueberry wojapi sauce on the venison burger was adapted from the traditional preparation method, while the muskeg tea battered whitefish n’ chips will have you forgetting beer battered fish is even a thing. The star of the show is the bison burger with house-cured bison bacon and homemade saskatoon berry BBQ sauce.

ELEVATED COFFEE and DONUTS

Yep, Saskatoon has the most Timmy’s per capita in Canada. But that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with the same coffee and donuts you can find everywhere else. We’re huge fans of coffee here – see for yourself the impact local roasters and barista culture has had on the Bridge City at places like Venn Coffee Roasters and Museo Coffee. Nothing pairs better with a latte than an artisanal donut. And you’ve got your pick in Saskatoon. Hit up Darkside Donuts for excellent sourdough-based and whimsical treats. Hometown Diner (also an awesome brunch spot) is in on the artisan donut trend, as is Pal Donuts with their old-fashioned favourites. Word to the wise: While you won’t find donuts at Citizen Café & Bakery, they have delicious (dairy and egg-free) pop tarts every day. Pop tarts!

COOK LIKE a LOCAL

Roll up your sleeves and get cooking! Saskatoon’s Local Kitchen in Riversdale will have you making a variety of ethnic and local cuisines like a pro. Chefs give classes in vegetarian, Indian, Asian, French pastries and more. There are family-friendly classes and skills-based ones; you might finally figure out how to make gnocchi or learn to entertain like a chef! Whether you’re seeking new friendships at a public class or booking a corporate team building event, this is the place to do it. The space also serves as a food business incubator and commercial kitchen, making it a hub for all things foodie in Saskatoon.

6 NOTABLE CHEF-DRIVEN EATERIES AYDEN KITCHEN AND BAR Saskatoon’s most well-known restaurant nationally, this downtown flagship spot from celebrity chef Dale Mackay opened in 2014 and is a popular spot for both dinner and well-crafted cocktails come nightfall. His other ventures include the Italian-focused Little Grouse on the Prairie and the pan-Asian Sticks and Stones. THE HOLLOWS Embracing the hyper-local mantra, Christie Peters and Kyle Michael’s renowned eatery impressively employs a horticulturalist who grows an array of produce for them. From whole animal butchery to making their own preserves, rest assured you’ll be dining as local as it gets.

Instagram credit: woman_alive

NOSH EATERY AND TAP Head to Broadway Avenue to check out this popular, vegetableforward concept and on-point cocktails. The focus is on vegan dishes like the raw Mad Beets – thinly sliced beets layered with pumpkin seed pesto and sweet pepper fennel sauce. Don’t leave without ordering a Saskatoon favourite: buffalo cauliflower tacos. ODD COUPLE Pulling inspiration from all over Asia, you can get your fix of tastes, like a spicy beef lo mein, Malaysian coconut rice, pad thai and plenty more. The approachable menu offers several vegan options and is enhanced by the restaurant’s sleek interior and thoughtful cocktails. SHIFT RESTAURANT The New York Times listed Saskatoon as one of the top places to visit in 2018 thanks to spots like the stunning Remai Modern and its restaurant Shift. Co-chefs Suyeon Myeong and Jonathan Harris have created a long list of contemporary Saskatchewan cuisine from beef tartare with za’atar bannock crisps to a tender pork chop with an apple gastrique. HEARTH RESTAURANT Hearth combines chefs Beth Rogers and Thayne Robstad’s love for Saskatchewan terroir with a goal of creating modern prairie food to write home about. Take the mushroom appetizer for example: made using wild mushrooms the chefs foraged themselves, it’s served with melty cheese, crostini and a sprig or two of reindeer moss from the boreal forest north of Saskatoon.

Sunny

SASKATOON By Daniel Dalman

There is an old saying that goes “make hay while the sun shines.” Another, lesser-known saying, is one my mother coined: “Get out of the dang basement and get some sunshine – you look like a vampire!” Though one seems oddly more specific than the other – they both mean essentially the same thing. It is easier to get out and play, to enjoy and familiarize yourself with a place while the sun is out. (Vampires read on at your own risk.) First and foremost – before you take advantage of everything there is to do in sunny weather in Saskatoon, you should prepare yourself with a few essentials pertinent to your Saskatoon experience.

A #SASKATOONING T-SHIRT

Nothing sets the tone for a day of exploring Saskatoon quite like a t-shirt that lays it all out there. #Saskatooning t-shirts (sold by Tourism Saskatoon) tell the world in no uncertain terms “Hey – I’m Saskatooning here!”.

SUNSCREEN

Even in winter. Yes. We aren’t lying about how sunny it is. Choose the self-applicating kind or get some friends to help! Your skin will thank you.

A SENSE OF ADVENTURE

It is almost a sure thing that some part of your day in Saskatoon is going to lead you down an unexpected path. Whether it’s a different food to try, or a new trail to hike there is always some new trail to blaze.

A cocktail can help you get a handle on some Saskatoon-isms. Why is everyone apologizing? What did they do? Is the weather really that interesting? What’s a bunny hug?
