VERNON BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA
Official Visitor Guide
Every STORY starts with a moment.
Our story is one of bike trails, champagne powder, colour defying lakes and people so friendly you’ll hate to leave. Rolling hills, majestic mountains, beaches and days filled with sunshine that starts in spring, create the perfect backdrop for your visit to Vernon. The Interior Salish thrived here until the early 1800s. First came the fur traders, then the miners, the Oblate missionaries, and finally the Hudson Bay Company. Much of our history can be seen on the 27 murals you’ll find gracing our downtown buildings. Stand in awe as these larger than life paintings depict our history, culture, folklore and scenery.

Events and Festivals! We have much to be thankful for in Vernon, and we love to celebrate!
Vernon Winter Carnival We start in February with the Vernon Winter Carnival, held February 4 to 14, 2016. This year’s event is Mardi Gras themed, so be prepared for colourful festivities. The event starts with the coronation of Queen Silver Star. The 24th annual Hot Air Balloon Fiesta can be seen the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Grab your cameras as you watch these gentle giants roll across the sky in a blaze of colour. You’ll marvel at the skill of the carvers at the BC Championship Snow Sculpture Competition at Silver Star Mountain Resort. Carving starts the first Friday of the carnival and must be completed by the first Sunday. You’ll be amazed at what these teams can do with a block of snow. Other carnival events include our Sparkling Snowflake Ball, a moonlit lantern ski at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre, a parade, a dance party and live music!
www.vernonwintercarnival.com Funtastic Canada’s biggest Slo-Pitch tournament with three days of live music happens right here from June 26 to 29, 2015, annually around Canada Day. Approximately 60 costumed teams take to the fields to win games and prizes for best costume and best sportsmanship. After a day of playing or cheering on your favourite team, it’s time to dance to classic and modern rock ‘n’ roll. Come out for all three

nights and party like a rock star. There is alcohol served during the concerts, so this is a 19+ event. Don’t worry about driving, as there are shuttle buses to take you on the five minute drive from the grounds into Vernon. There are plenty of food trucks too, so you won’t go hungry.
www.funtasticsports.ca Okanagan Military Tattoo Come celebrate tradition on July 25 and 26, 2015 at Kal Tire Place. This musical demonstration of military drumming, piping and skills is as unique as it gets. It got the name “tattoo” over 300 years ago when the British Army was fighting in Belgium. Soldiers were called in from the pubs each night for curfew, or Doe den tap toe, Dutch for “Turn off the tap.” Expose yourself to the arts and traditions of our neighbours and forefathers. Be inspired by the musicians and dancers that keep this art form alive and well.
www.okanagantattoo.ca Prospera Vernon Dragon Boat Festival Exciting races, fundraising, and the 2nd Annual Water Ski Challenge are happening on August 15 at the Prospera Vernon Dragon Boat Festival. The calm waters of Kalamalka Lake are perfect for a day of racing, featuring the highly regarded Millennium Dragon Boats.

Marvel at the precision as 20 paddlers and their steersperson work in unison as the drummer sets the pace. This year they’ve added a beachside market with plenty of local goodies to choose from.
www.vernondbfestival.com Kalamalka Classic The Kalamalka Classic is Canada’s largest SUP (Standup Paddleboard) festival. All Labour Day weekend you’ll find events for all ages and skill levels. Beginners and teams, kids and pros, all get to try their luck and show their skill, which results in a spectacular day filled with laughter and lots of cheering. And to make it even better, this is a fundraiser for the Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake, which was formed to raise awareness of the delicate nature of this multi-coloured lake.
