Enjoy the Beautiful Bitterroot Valley
Brake lights cut the morning fog in front of me,
reflecting off the still damp highway. The reason for the abrupt braking is a flock of wild turkeys crossing Highway 93. My journey into the Bitterroot Valley has begun.
Seeing what out-of-towners call “significant wild-
life”: wild turkeys, deer, moose, elk and big horn sheep is not at all uncommon. In fact, just a few miles down the road as I enter the Bitterroot Valley from the north, a blinking yellow construction sign flashes out the rather usual ‘Caution: Watch for Wildlife on Highway’. This doesn’t strike me as odd, but then again I have spent all of my life here. Living with wildlife is just something I have come to accept. Those who move here from the
city spend the first couple years pulling over to take pictures of deer. The rest of us drive by remembering nostalgically the days when we too were enchanted by the sight of a buck in standing on the lawn of the town bank.
It’s not just the human-accustomed wildlife
or deer-jaded drivers that cause this place to have its timeless feel. Driving south into the Bitterroot Valley, there is something stirring in the air. The Sapphire Mountains to the east, delaying the sunrise, and the rocky crags of the Bitterroot Range to the west, set the stage for a day trip of unparalleled beauty. It’s not just the breathtaking views and nostalgic shop-fronts in historic communities that make us want to be here. The air in this place is wholly different. The aromatic pine carried from the mountains never far away is overwhelming. It’s nature’s way of welcoming you to Big Sky Country.
This original art print of THE BEAUTIFUL BITTERROOT VALLEY is an artfully combined selection of Nelson Kenter’s Bitterroot Valley photography. This print is 23” x 16 1/2” and printed on acid free high quality paper. This first time offering of the work is only $129 and $29 of each order will be donated, in your name to the Ravalli County Historical Museum, to assist them in documenting and preserving the history of the Beautiful Bitterroot Valley. Order today at 1-877-TOUR MON(tana) $139 plus $9 S/H
It doesn’t make scientific sense; if the horizon to
all sides is intruded by the sharp peaks of mountains, how can the sky seem so impossibly big? Perhaps it is that undefined thing in the air that magnifies the sky. If the beautiful blue daytime sky isn’t big enough for you, pull off the highway at night, away from city lights - the famous Big Sky effect is magnified when the stars are out. We Montanans have a fierce sense of pride-in and love-for our Bitterroot Valley. Fishing, Hiking, History, Wilderness, Wildlife, and plant life . . . and standing in the forefront is of course our love of all things huckleberry: Jelly, jam, chocolate, cake, pancakes, pie, wine, and more. Be cautioned, foraging for “hucks” though rewarding, may mean sharing your picking space with a bear or two. Even most locals opt for purchasing the jar of already made jam.
You may find many of us Montanans slightly
obsessed with Lewis and Clark; most of us can tell you things about those wily explorers that you never would have thought to ask, and may leave you wondering why we know it. Lewis and Clark also loved the Bitterroot Valley. Stevensville was Montana’s first permanent white settlement.
We are especially fond of the river that divides
and names our valley. The Bitterroot River flows about 75 miles from near Conner, where the East and West Forks join, until it converges with
the Clark Fork River in Missoula. It is well known and loved for the recreation it provides, from fly fishing to kayaking and anything in between. If you’re a big movie buff, you might know of our reputation from the movie “A River Runs Though it”.
The day wears on, as I travel south on 93, and
I can see the hulking silhouette of Trapper Peak approaching. It stands sentinel over the valley as the tallest peak in the Bitterroot Range. From here it looks like a crumpled wizard’s hat, but a dirt road drive and an arduous climb later, the mountain reveals itself to be a collection of three peaks. Even from the Highway though, this mountain strikes an imposing figure. The end of my trip today is Lost Trail Ski resort, where the average yearly accumulation of perfect skiing powder sits at just around 300 inches. Very reasonably priced and close to the accommodations of the Bitterroot Valley, this “hill” is the snowenthusiast’s dream.
My headlights point north and the Bitterroot
Mountains are on my left. The trip back up the valley reminds me that incredible beauty and adventure require little more than a tank of gas and a sense of direction (and perhaps a compass). So wherever you find your car parked, whether across the world or over the bridge, this pristine corner of the Rockies waits for you. It’s a Beautiful Day in the Bitterroot Valley. by Lexi Klenow

LET’S GO!
Darby, Montana . . . Hidden Gem of the Sapphires! Nestled between the Sapphire and Bitterroot
Mountains, Darby is one small town with a very big heart! At a population of less than 1,000, it would be easy to overlook this hard working little community with its quaint shops and cozy inns. However you don’t want to miss out on Darby. First established in the early 1800’s as logging and ranching community. It was known by many names over the years, including ‘Doolittle’ and ‘Harrison’ before it’s postmaster, James Darby, decided to name the town after himself in 1888. No one in town was consulted in this name change, but the name stuck all the same. Over the last 120 years, Darby has ebbed and flowed with the Western economic booms - from mining and fur trading, to logging and apples, this little town has become a stronghold in the Bitterroot Valley.
Darby is situated perfectly for the outdoorsman with the pristine beauty of the wilderness right outside its back door. Whether you’re looking for a family camping trip into the wilderness or itching for a great place to fish, Darby is the perfect jumping off spot. Stop by the Darby Pioneer Memorial Museum and get a taste of what homesteading was really like, or stop by Double HH Custom Hat Co. for that handmade western hat. Make sure you check out Old West Gallery and Candy Store, there’s something inside to delight everyone. Take the kids fishing and boating at Lake Como or Painted Rocks Lake State Park, or fish the east and west forks of the Bitterroot. Just outside Darby is The Painted Rock State Park & Reservoir where you can trout fish t’il your heart’s content. Whatever you do, don’t forget your camera . . . There is wildlife and scenery galore!
Bitterroot Community Federal Credit Union,
chartered in 1968, is Darby’s only Credit Union. Like the Darby community, Bitterroot Community FCU is personal and friendly. Darby is a community that will always pull together to support a family in need and you will find this same characteristic in the staff and policies of this credit union. “People Helping People” - forms the backbone of this member-owned and locally-operated business. With this business philosophy the Bitterroot Community Federal Credit Union will grow and prosper right along with the community. As the community goes, so goes the Bitterroot Community FCU. If you are thinking of moving to Darby or Ravalli County, or if you have lived in the valley all of your life, you will appreciate doing business with the Bitterroot Community Federal Credit Union, and perhaps most importantly - they will appreciate you! paints with a painterly, expressive style with just a touch of Russian influence. Tricia has recently moved her home base from Golden, Colorado to Hamilton. While new to the Bitterroot Valley, Bass is no stranger to painting the Rocky Mountain West. She was the 1st Place associate artist at the Plein Air Artist Of Colorado 2011 National Exhibition, she took 3rd Place at the 2009 Wyoming Plein Air and she was a selected participant at the 2011 American Impressionist Society National Exhibition in Carmel, California last year. Tricia enjoys painting still-life and the landscape but is in her element painting “en plein air” (French for “in open air”). “Painting on location is critical to becoming a competent landscape painter”, Bass states. She goes on explain that a camera averages color and value (light and dark) so “working from just a photograph doesn’t show an artist everything they need to know.” Like Lewis and Clark, she considers herself to be on a “Corps of Discovery” painting in Montana, but admits that the comparison is thin. “Exploring the Sapphires, the Bitterroots and the Northern Rockies is a relatively cushy experience today with the convenience of my pickup truck and the neighborhood grocery,” the artist admits. She is fascinated by all the local history and enjoys discovering new places to paint. As a colorist Bass prides herself in finding that correct color and does not shy away from even the most brilliant choice. She declares American painter Edgar Payne as her current “historical hero” but is also strongly influenced by the works of Russians Sergei Bongart and Fedor Zakharov. Her favorite contemporary artists include Americans Clyde Aspivig, Don Sahli and Scott Christensen. “The best part of my day is when I’m standing behind that paint brush or cruising through an art book, just trying to learn and grow as a painter”, the artist states. Bass has just purchased a new home and studio in Corvallis.

2012 – The Year of Father Ravalli Antonio Ravalli was born on May 16, 1812 in Ferrara, Italy. Join us at St. Mary’s Mission and Museum this season as we celebrate The Year of Father Ravalli. On display in the museum is an oil painting by Fr. Ravalli, plus a portrait of Fr. Ravalli, both on loan from St. Francis Xavier Church in Missoula. The interior of St. Mary’s Chapel also reveals the many talents of this “Great Good Man”. Fr. Ravalli’s 1869 log cabin and pharmacy contain many pieces of his hand carved furniture. “He was the epitome of gentility; sensitive, and disciplined, a man of enormous capacity for compassion,” wrote Father Willfred P. Schoenberg, S.J., of Father Anthony Ravalli. This book is a collection of writings to pay tribute to a man that is deserving of prominence in the history of Montana, as well as those other states formed from the old Oregon Territory. Included are an incredible number of “first occurrences in Montana” that are a result of skilled and talented Fr. Ravalli. Montana’s beloved priestphysician-artist, after whom the county is named, was assigned to St. Mary’s from 1845 to 1850 and again in 1866 until his death in 1884. Father Ravalli rests in St. Mary’s Cemetery west of the chapel he designed and helped build. $7.95 plus shipping and handling. Available online: saintmarysmission .org

Thursday, December, 20, 2012 6pm Exhibit: Opening Reception of Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic & Medicine On display December 20, 2012 - January 26, 2013 In 1997, British author J. K. Rowling introduced the world to Harry Potter, and a literary Potter’s phenomenon was born. Millions World of readers have followed Harry to the Hogwarts School of Renaissance Science, Magic & Medicine Witchcraft and Wizardry where he discovers his heritage, encounters new plants and animals, and perfects his magical abilities. Although a fantasy story, the magic in the Harry Potter books is partially based on Renaissance traditions that played an important role in the development of Western science, including alchemy, astrology, and natural philosophy. Incorporating the work of several 15th and 16th century thinkers, the seven-part series examines important ethical topics such as the desire for knowledge, the effects of prejudice, and the responsibility that comes with power. This exhibition, using materials from the National Library of Medicine, explores Harry Potter’s world, its roots in Renaissance science, and the ethical questions that affected not only the wizards of Harry Potter, but also the historical thinkers featured in the series. Exhibit in collaboration with Rocky Mountain Laboratories and the National Institute of Health.

BITTERROOT RIVER
Fly Fishing The Bitterroot
is a western experience like no other, mists lifting off morning water turning to crisp mountain days on the Bitterroot River. Days are full of fly rods casting over riffles and glides, watching for rising trout, hoping a skwala was the right choice. Sunshine or clouds, a day being on the river is worth it.
Fly fishing vacations in Montana are lifetime experiences. Guided river
adventures in Montana are known for endless views of snow-capped mountains, pure clean waters, towering Ponderosa Pine forests, bald eagles, elk, and a million more sights and smells. We love it, that’s why we live here. Our guides enjoy seeing the smiles on your face when you see a mule deer standing in the river, or are hooked into a healthy rainbow trout while wading a run.
The Bitterroot River
starts its fame as far back as the stories from Lewis and Clark. They remembered this river as the southern guide from Traveler’s Rest. Today, fishermen float the Bitterroot River for world-class trout fishing, gin clear mountain waters, and endless vistas of the Bitterroot Mountains.
From its origins in the Pintlar Mountains and the
southern Bitterroot Mountains, the Bitterroot River flows north through the towns of Sula, Darby, Hamilton, Stevensville, Florence, and Missoula. The river is known for fishermen enjoying days of catching primarily Westslope Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout, with a smattering of feisty Brown Trout. Though the Bitterroot River passes through a populated valley, we commonly see elk, deer, moose, Bald Eagles and Osprey, ducks and other waterbirds, the occasional river otter, and many other critters residing in the lush river corridor.
The fishing guides for Sula Mountain Fly Fishing have been guid-
ing fishing trips on the Bitterroot River, Clark Fork River, Blackfoot River, Big Hole River, Beaverhead River, Madison River, and the Missouri for many years. These guided trips are run by guides who understand that great fly fishing trips come from being passionate about living on the river, fishing, and Montana’s big sky.
Sula Mountain Fly Fishing provides expert guided fly fishing trips
in the Montana West. You can look forward to experienced guides taking you to the best water, patient instruction, a big healthy lunch, a safe and well equipped boat, and expert knowledge of the river and community. Fish the Bitterroot river with professional guides. Enjoy panoramic views of the Bitterroot Mountain Range, crystal clear mountain water, populations of wild trout, and end of day camaraderie over pints with good folks at one of our local micro breweries. In an era when both parents often work outside the home and there's a universal demand for speed, quality, value and convenience, Figaro's is there to meet these needs for busy families. 1151 N 1st St, Ste B • Hamilton • 406.375.0164 • www.figaros.com

Enjoy the region’s history through the museum’s vivid exhibits, including:
The Lemhi Shoshone/Agaidika Artifacts This is the largest extant collection of artifacts from Sacajawea’s people available anywhere for viewing.
History of Life in the American West This collection illustrates the history of the area from the 1866 discovery of gold and other mineral riches to the growth of the cattle, sheep, crops, and timber industries. History is recreated with exhibits of historical implements, artifacts from everyday life, and a wide range of local historical photographs.
History of the Regional Chinese Community The museum exhibits a number of artifacts from the Chinese residents as well as a collection of photographs.
The Ray Edwards Asian Collection In 1966, to commemorate the efforts of his mining and ranching ancestors, the Ray Edwards estate donated a collection of Asian artifacts and provided funds to build the room in which they are exhibited. Edwards collected the Chinese, Japanese, and Tibetan relics during a 1920s tour of Asia.

The Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural & Educational Center is cradled in the Lemhi River Valley between the Salmon River and the Beaverhead Mountains. Located in the heart of Sacajawea’s homeland, this seventyone acre park is dedicated to honoring and providing education about the great historical American heroine, Sacajawea, her people — the Agai Dika Lemhi Shoshone, and her role in the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery expedition. The unique historical aspects of the expedition within Lemhi County offer an opportunity for the center to not only bring greater understanding and enlightenment to all the people of the world about Native Americans including the Agai Dika Shoshone but to also promote local community arts, educational and recreational programs, and to preserve and promote conservation of our environment and open spaces. The Visitor Center is open from Memorial Day through the end of September. Enjoy their interpretive exhibits which focus on Sacajawea, her role in the Expedition, and the Agai Dika Shoshone perspective. Artifacts and other displays are supplemented by knowledgeable volunteers. The Sacajawea Center is not limited to static, indoor museum exhibits, the park and trails are open year-round and its unique outdoor
setting is the “natural choice for travelers.” Its river corridor and fields of open space encompass some of the best wildlife habitat in the valley, while providing a peaceful spot to take in scenic views of the stunning peaks of the Continental Divide. Plan to spend some time enjoying their lovely walking trails and their Outdoor Prograns. Whether it’s a little known historical fact or how to make your own natural dyes, you’re bound to leave the Sacajawea Center both entertained and enlightened. Their programs provide a hands-on experience, sometimes referred to as experiential learning. Don’t miss Mike Crosby’s Corps of Discovery Presentations at the Meriweather Theater on Saturdays throughout the summer or by special arrangements for your group. Sign up for a School of Discovery program and step back in time to a primitive 19th century village. Learn first hand about healing plants, softening a deer hide, preparing sinew for thread, turning stones and bones into useful tools, or fashioning baskets out of natural materials. If you did not sign up to participate, you are welcome to observe. Whether your preference is browsing exhibits, having a pleasant picnic while traveling, walking or biking on nature trails in a beautiful countryside, or hands on experiential learning, the Sacajewea Center will not disappoint.
