With the arrival of August, it’s time for the 93rd Annual Fleet Review. During the review, the three current Commodores and their Ladies will salute the fleet from the balcony of the Marine Activity Center. The Fleet will follow the traditional path out of the harbor and into the lake; they will turn back toward the club at the usual mark and pass by the Marine Activity Center. As the boats pass, the Commodores will salute with canon fire and a hand salute. I encourage all members who can, to take their boat out and participate in this timehonored tradition. Those who do not have access to a boat are welcome to come out to the East Wall by the Marine Activity Center and salute the passing fleet. After the review of the fleet, we will gather for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the East Lawn. Then we move to the Ball Room for the “Cirque du Soleil” themed dinner prepared by our Executive Chef Eric Voigt and his staff. Melissa and I hope you will join us for these special GPYC traditions. Of course, I can’t ignore the Friday night “Vegas Hotels” dock parties. This is always one of the best nights at the club. The boats are decorated, food tables are out at each of the docks, as well as the MAC for those without boats. Cocktails will be flowing and later in the evening music will be playing on the Gazebo Deck. So, get involved in decorating your boat or your dock, then come out to see which dock and boats win bragging rights for the best decorations. Turning to our Club improvement projects and VISION 2026, I am happy to report the new Commodores Wine Vault is open. Please schedule a meeting with Tyler Whittico, our new Food and Beverage Director to get your selections installed. We are having great success with the changes implemented for harborside grill, as well as expanded programs for Pickleball and Sailing. New to the Gazebo is our very own resident DJ Nick Johnson. He will feature great music and lighting from our new in-house DJ system provided by your very own board of directors. Melissa and I are also looking forward to this year’s Fall Getaway Weekend to Nashville on October 7-9. Nashville is a perfect destination for members to enjoy great food, music, and camaraderie. Please contact our Catering Director Maria Dallas for details. All members are welcome, so please join us. I think you will agree the summer season is very short in Michigan so make sure you take time to enjoy the club, your boats, and the beautiful weather. I hope to see you around the club and on the water. Sincerely,

Jason Grobbel Commodore GPYC

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER What Happens in Vegas …

It has been such an amazing summer at GPYC this year. I have been fortunate enough to see 17 summers, including this one, but none quite compare to this year. I remember in 2019, I told our team that it was a record high for activity, and I thought to myself, “how could we ever top this year?” Well, we did it this year! The traffic in the food and beverage outlets has been at an all-time high, and the participation in programs and activities has been outstanding. I know I speak for my entire team when I say thank you to all the members who continue to support the Club and its efforts. The best part is that the summer isn’t over yet. There are so many things to enjoy still. Whether a boater or non-boater, the Annual Up North Rendezvous is a great way to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. This year’s destination is Bay Harbor occurring August 1-4. If you are coming by land, the Club recommends the Bay Harbor Village Hotel or The Inn at Bay Harbor. Both venues are close to the Harbor, where the activities will take place and provide premier-level experiences. Looking ahead, we are also very excited about the 93rd Annual Fleet Review on August 18-21. This year’s theme for the dock parties will be Las Vegas Hotels! Make sure to start scheming with your dock mates on which Vegas hotel theme you will decorate too. Our Social Members will be in charge of decorating the Marine Activity Center (building in the southeast corner of the Harbor). There will be something for everyone that week, with the Family Game Night kicking it off on Thursday, followed by the Dock Parties on Friday. Make sure to visit every dock because it is so fun to see all the decorations and experience the themed cocktails and food. That Saturday, the 93rd Fleet Review Parade of Boats will occur, led by Fleet Captain Power Saylor Frase and Fleet Captain Sail Michael Page. We would like to have as many boats as possible participate, so please plan on taking your boat out for this. The weekend will climax Saturday evening for the Fleet Review Dinner with a Cirque De Soleil theme, so be sure to book your reservations before they sell out! I hope you are enjoying your experience thus far this summer. We look forward to serving you. Smooth sailing,

Aaron Wagner

HARBOR

With summer in full swing, Harbor Master Alex Turner and his team are working hard to keep the harbor clean and safe. As a courtesy to our members, to the harbor staff, GPYC staff PLEASE communicate through the GPYC Concierge APP to order services like fuel, order food, ice, pump outs and more as this makes it easier to schedule services needed and acknowledgments of services requested will be sent.

HAPPENINGS

If you have any comments or concerns regarding the Harbor, email me at cizzi@utsitech.com. Respectfully Christopher Izzi GPYC Harbor Chair 2022 Harbor Committee

Schedule an in well pump out during non-peak times, Monday – Thursday to minimize the congestion at our fuel docks during the busy weekend.

Some boating cliches and meanings

Harbor postings have been sent out and returned. Our harbor is full. You can see the latest harbor posting on the GPYC website.

The devil seam was the curved seam in the deck planking closest to the side of the ship and next to the scupper gutters. If a sailor slipped on the deck, he could find himself between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Rendezvous schedule is on the website and on the APP under events. If you have not signed up for any rendezvous, please call the front desk and reserve your spot. It is a great way to meet fellow boating members, see our beautiful state from the water and to visit other harbors along the way. The UP NORTH RENDEZVOUS is always a treat starting August 1-4.

Leeway

The weather side of a ship is the side from which the wind is blowing. The Lee side is the side of the ship sheltered from the wind. A lee shore is a shore that is downwind of a ship. If a ship does not have enough “leeway” it is in danger of being driven onto the shore.

Please advise the harbor office of a float plan if you are planning on any extended travel. The Harbor Staff & Committee would like to remind you of a few essential harbor etiquette items: 1. Vessels leaving the Harbor have the right of way 2. Swimming is not permitted in the Harbor at any time due to Electrical Shock Drowning 3. Fishing is not permitted in the Harbor. It is permitted over the outer East Wall and South Wall areas. Remember to clean your area when finished. 4. When leaving or entering the Harbor, vessels MUST remain inside the NO WAKE navigational buoys outside the harbor entrance. 5. Vessels have the right of way at the EAST Swing Bridge and WEST Swing Bridge traffic. Vessels are to hail the Harbor office via V.H.F. Channel 9 or call (313) 640-7000 to open or close either bridge.

CLUB

SPOTLIGHT Greetings Members, Facilities have been working hard constantly to maintain and improve our Club’s infrastructure. Below are a few highlights we would like to share with our members. 1) Have you noticed the new color of the Anchor? The Anchor has been a landmark for the Club for years, and after decades of wearing the same color, we decided to give it a makeover. The Anchor is now snow-white, matching the flag pole and surrounding curbsides. Now ready for whatever photoshoot comes her way!

2) More shade for members! The Club has multiple shade options this year, starting with the new Gazebo. This was a massive project, and the facility team delivered as promised. Secondly, the Tennis area now has both shade for the players and a sitting area that provides shade for the kids. So enjoy staying cool and out of the sun this year! 3) Freshly painted railings. We are focusing on repainting/repairing the railings in the building. The goal is to eventually repaint the entire facility and preserve the beauty for another 100 years. Our Facility Team takes pride in the Club, and we hope you enjoy the new additions.

MEMBERSHIP

MATTERS

Membership Referral Program The GPYC is excited to announce a new Membership Referral program with various exciting incentives for our members. The referral program will be a quarter long beginning this month. Every member who refers a candidate, who joins the Club, will be entered into a drawing. At the end of the quarter, I will personally be drawing a winner to choose one of these fabulous prizes: a two-hour bowling party, a Grog Shop gift basket, a training session with Athletic Director Peter Wendzinski, brunch for four, a wine basket, or a dinner in the wine cellar for four, with a custom menu by Chef Eric Voigt. So, make sure to spread the word to your friends about all the wonderful amenities the Club offers, and encourage them to join today. We look forward to meeting all the new candidates our members refer! Membership Director Alexa Coole
