Welcome from the Chairs It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 Junior League of Detroit Designers’ Show House. We are extremely thankful to the owners of this beautiful home for allowing us to transform it for a worthy cause. This luxurious manor-style home, built in 1988, is known as the House on the Hill and aptly so. It is set within Grosse Pointe Farms on the highest elevated point of Lake Shore Road, affording privacy and priceless views of glistening Lake St. Clair. It is without doubt, a sophisticated, gently opulent, and finely crafted jewel on the Hill. It is standing on the location of the Higbie Mansion, which was demolished in 1984 when the estate was divided into this beautiful subdivision. Our curated team of returning and first-time designers have given us much to experience with their talent and inspired designs. Without them, this event would not be possible. Although many of the home’s spaces are totally redesigned, you will also enjoy seeing how designers incorporated some of the homeowners’ design elements into newly reimagined spaces. Also, thank you to our sponsors, especially our dear legacy sponsors, the Richard and Jane Manoogian Foundation whose generous contributions support our many philanthropic efforts. Since its inception in 1976, the Show House has enabled the Junior League of Detroit to raise approximately $5 million to support our community projects. These transformational programs have focused on improving the lives of children and families in the City of Detroit. Since our 1914 founding we have completed 53 major projects. We are also thankful for our hard-working and dedicated Steering Committee, our Junior League members, family and friends who’ve worked tirelessly this Show House season. Also, we extend a special acknowledgement of appreciation to the neighbors who welcomed us to the neighborhood, and Grosse Pointe Farms officials Mayor Louis Theros, City Manager Shane Reeside, Mayor Pro Tem John J. Gillooly, Public Safety Director John Hutchins and Deputy Director/Chief Andrew Rogers. Again, enjoy the splendor of this magnificent Show House and know how much you have helped change lives in our community. Shelia Minetola, Gabriela Boddy and Dianne Bostic Robinson

Letter from the President On behalf of the Junior League of Detroit, I am honored and delighted to present our 24th Designers’ Show House. The Junior League of Detroit is a nonprofit women’s volunteer organization committed to positively impacting the lives of children and families in the City of Detroit. For the past 108 years, our members have been change-makers in the community. Through the combination of our volunteers and fundraising efforts, the Junior League of Detroit is proud to have made an impact in collaborative partnerships to address issues such as literacy, health, nutrition, and the well-being of children in Detroit. Our goal is to leave a lasting impression on the city in which we live, work and play. The Designers’ Show House is the largest fundraiser for our organization. Since its inception in 1976, the Show House has enabled the Junior League of Detroit to raise approximately $5 million to support our community projects. Our past projects include the establishment of a safe lunchroom for working women, the Pediatric Mobile Team partnership with Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and renovations to Orchestra Hall, Belle Isle and the Monteith Branch of the Detroit Public Library. These are just a few highlights of the influential projects we’ve completed during our 108-year history. The awe-inspiring transformation of this home into the 2022 Designers’ Show House is the result of the tireless effort of many talented designers around the country, gifted craftspeople, and Junior League volunteers under the steadfast leadership of the Designers’ Show House Co-Chairs: Shelia Minetola, Gabriela Boddy and Dianne Bostic Robinson. We also recognize that this event could not have been accomplished without our generous corporate and patron sponsors. Thank you for attending the 2022 Designers’ Show House event. Your support enables the Junior League of Detroit to continue to fulfill its mission to promote volunteerism, develop the potential of women, and improve communities through effective action and leadership. We invite you to learn more about the Junior League of Detroit by visiting JLDetroit.org. I hope you will enjoy your visit to the “House on the Hill” at 205 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Farms.

Historyof 205 Lake Shore
205 Lake Shore, Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan
About 205 Lake Shore Road, and the land where it stands.
W
elcome to “The House on the Hill,” the Junior League of Detroit 2022 Designers’ Show House! In the late 1800s this land was acquired by Hugo Scherer, who made his fortune from the production and sales of carriage goods and later from real estate. His main residence was in Detroit, and he built what is now the Michigan Governor’s Summer Mansion on Mackinac Island and in 1898, a residence with the address 195 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Farms. Architect Louis Kamper designed what was originally a spectacular summer residence. Located on Lake Shore Drive, at Moran Road, it was constructed during an era when Detroit families came to Grosse Pointe to spend the summer months close to the lake. In 1926, after the cottage was demolished, Scherer’s daughter and her husband, Harley G. Higbie, built the Higbie Mansion on the property with the help of architect George D. Mason. The house was demolished in 1984 and the land subdivided into the land parcels where the show house now stands. In 1988, this house was built by the McCormack family, and sold to the current owners in 2004. The owners were so gracious to let the Junior League of Detroit borrow their lovely home for the 2022 Designers’ Show House. Please enjoy your tour and thank you for helping us, the Junior League of Detroit, fund our community projects and grants to help uplift women and children in Detroit.

About JLD
T
he Junior League of Detroit, with more than a century of service since its inception in 1914, has made its mark on the city, its people and culture. During this time, JLD members have committed themselves to identifying challenges, developing strategies and pro-actively putting solutions into place that make change happen. We have responded to a changing and dynamic city throughout the decades and have answered the many needs of its people. The Designers’ Show House is a major part of this process, raising the necessary dollars that allow the JLD to make an impact on the community. Thank you for supporting the JLD and join us as we prepare for another hundred years of service. The Beginning Detroit in 1914 was booming. Ford Motor Company’s assembly line and the announcement of a $5, 8-hour day were revolutionary and a looming World War I created a new awareness of the importance of women in the workforce and society. Just a few years later, in 1919, women would earn the right to vote. It was during this exciting and turbulent time that the Junior League of Detroit ( JLD) was born. Forty-seven women joined forces in 1914 to start the JLD, led by our first president, Mrs. Paul Weadock. The JLD’s first project reflected the changing times for Detroit’s working women. In 1915, the JLD established a lunchroom for working women on Woodward Avenue between John R and Grand Circus Park. The lunchroom provided nutritious and economical meals as well as a place where working women could relax, talk, and feel secure. Lunch cost 6 cents. Since that first project, JLD members have always strived to identify areas and communities with underserved needs and to match their skills and energies with projects and programs that can fill those needs and answer the unanswered questions. There have been many highlights throughout the past 100-plus years. Since the mid-1990s, the JLD has chosen to dedicate its financial and volunteer resources to specifically focus on the children of Detroit and their families. Projects following that refocus included sponsoring and mentoring a classroom of children at Cornerstone Schools and the establishment of the new Learning Center at the Monteith Branch of the Detroit Public Library. In the past several years, the JLD’s membership developed Project EAT that provides and supports healthy eating opportunities for the children of Detroit and their families.

Covid did not stop us from serving our community
2020-2022
The JLD continued to service the Empowerment Panty until it was able to be self-sustaining. We began to plan a relationship with Brilliant Detroit.
Our current project with Brilliant Detroit: “Adopt a Home” in the Morningside Community of Detroit’s East Side Brilliant Detroit is dedicated to building kid success families and neighborhoods where families with children 0-8 have what they need to be school ready, healthy and stable. It does this by providing proven programming and year-round support out of Brilliant Detroit homes in highneed neighborhoods. The League started its work with Brilliant Detroit with a Christmas gift giveaway. We adopted a home on Balfour and plan to continue our support for Brilliant Detroit with services such as tutoring, pantry resources and active volunteer hours. The JLD is more than 500 members strong and still growing and includes all generations, demographics, communities and walks of life. Working professionals, retirees and stay-at-home moms are all at the table together, planning for the next 100 years of giving back to the city we all call home. Thank you for your support of our mission and hard work. Stay tuned for our next success story! For more information on our Brilliant Detroit Project visit JLDetroit.org

elcome Home, this classic yet comfortable foyer is tastefully appointed with neoclassical styled demilunes that flank the front entrance. Above these are abstract oil paintings in shades of white and black. The room is inspired by the beautiful white and black marble floors that anchor the space. Comfortable seating is provided in the form of a small French sofa and complementing chairs, there are blue accents throughout the room. This is a place to stop and reflect at the end of a busy day, or the bright beginning of a new one. A place to meet, greet, have a cup of tea or a spot of brandy. Tastefully curated with an interesting collection of art. Abstract paintings, classical etchings, and various artifacts made from glass, bronze, wood and stone have been placed to interest the eye, spark joy and conversation. The Chinoiserie secretary is filled with vellum covered antique books and is flanked by a pair of gold gilded Regency style chairs. It is a nice place to open the mail, review a magazine or book, perhaps write a note to a friend or companion. Close the door, kick off your shoes and relax …. Welcome Home!

than Allen makes design choices rooted in classicism while honoring the past and demands of the present. We are presenting a sophisticated statement for 2022. We also design and build most of what we sell. This allows us to bring you styles you cannot find anywhere else, created with an uncompromising level of craftsmanship at values that will constantly surprise you. Refined contrast creates a dramatic impact while allowing the artistry of generations past to shine. Inspired by Art Deco, every detail is meant to convey luxury. Rich neutral velvet barrel-backed sofas surround the fireplace. Its glamorous channel tufting is a modern take on classic sensibility. With simplified architectural details, the neoclassical wood selections give the room timeless character with hand-applied olive ash burl veneers and a satin gold finish, for modern functionality. This design is a place for lingering over craft cocktails and sweet petit fours. Custom-tailored performance fabrics bring livability to the party. A blend on materials and lavish textures creates a space that is perfect for entertaining.

A modern chandelier centers the room illuminating a seating area worthy of pre or post dinner cocktails overlooking a stunning lakefront view. A variation of blue and off-white novels fill the bookshelves amongst an array of sculptural and art elements. Lion motif grass cloth is thoughtfully displayed within the impressive coffered ceiling. A bold mix of color and texture is created by the layering of black crocodile wallpaper with colorful art and rich golden metallics. Original abstract art is mixed with antique curated objects. Notice the self portrait painted by Chicago illustrator Stella Mavrides. Stella is known for her commercial illustration work as well as being one of Hugh Hefner’s close companions. The objects in the room are presented to enjoy visually as well as to create opportunities for discussion. You will notice that someone has slipped into the powder room from one of the literary lectures in the grand salon. Enjoying a quick break from her fabulous shoes and a retouch of lipstick and perfume will ease her back into the lively discussion.

magine Detroit in the early 19th century, uninterrupted by its first settlers, where lush oak trees sway and move with the wind, quietly calling you to fall into the same rhythm. Imagine the billowing waves of fresh lake water creating a symbiotic song, all in harmony with its surrounding elements to create a picture-perfect landscape that inspires mankind for eternity. In creating the concept for ‘Deja View’, we wanted to call on Detroit’s history as a base layer for the present-day. The use of vintage tapestries and natural materials such as mohair, rattan and wool represent sustainability while the use of newer materials, such as metals and synthetics, pay homage to the booming industrial shift in present-day Detroit. The playful use of color throughout the space is integral to our design philosophy and allows us to utilize the earth’s palette to the max. Deja View is an oasis for the senses as inspiration from adjacent Lake St. Clair and Canada, contrasted with the grit and energy of Metro Detroit, create a base for the eclectic layerings of décor and furniture. Deja View exudes fantasy rooted in classic design, with a bit of whimsy and wabi-sabi for the perfect balance of old, new and a little quirky.

This beautiful design concept has a dual function as a bedroom with a sophisticated custom Murphy Bed. The Secret Garden

Room #9
ringing the feel of the outside in, the Secret Garden is a whimsical mixture of blues, greens and lilacs. The elegant draperies are a linen textile paired with a luxe velvet trim. Mixing traditional elements with modern touches of brass and acrylic bring this guest suite up to date. The custom furniture pieces are painted in a deep green and finished with metallic accents atop a neutral wool area rug. Filled with historic charm, bright color, and a whole lot of personality, The Secret Garden is straight out of a Southern bed and breakfast. Incorporating the traditional feel of this estate, the “inn” has a pair of meadow green framed beds that would be perfect for visitors of any age. Each guest has an overhead sconce to cozy up and read after a long day, or to just kick back and enjoy the divine linens and decor.

with empty nesters in mind, Mr. and Mrs. Bon Voyage, who have a passion for travel. Since these globetrotters often hit the road for business or pleasure, they deserve a personal space that exudes the same level of luxury and comfort as the notable hotels and resorts from their stays. Both husband and wife can savor nature and enjoy the beautiful sunrise as they start each day with their morning beverages overlooking Lake St. Clair from the bay window year-round. Their private retreat also lets them get cozy by the fireplace where they can admire the exotic images taken by the husband, an avid photographer, who documents their stops around the world.

tep into this Hamptons inspired reading room. A breath of fresh air is felt in this relaxing yet sophisticated beachy vibe room that comes across as effortless and calming. This natural and elegant relaxation corner has welcoming beach tones seen through the 3D coral wallpaper and white lamb swivel chairs. Hints of ocean blue are seen throughout the room such as the ombré chandelier and bookcase showcasing the inspiration of the beautiful beach houses in the region of Long Island. The writing desk by the window that was once an ordinary table has been transformed to a one-of-a-kind unique piece using chalk paint and stencils. Soft and cozy textures are seen throughout the room like the rug in the center with complementing colors and plush chairs welcoming you to cozy up with a coffee and book in your hand.

itrus fruits have been used for centuries to give our meals a bright burst of flavor, a sudden spark to our senses. Imagine that first tart bite of a grapefruit as it hits your taste buds, the way it widens your eyes and alerts your senses. In the kitchen we wanted to recreate that spark with visual pops of color and what better way than with food! White bowls filled with spiky green artichokes and shiny yellow lemons draw your eye to the breakfast bar, while clear glass jars filled with white rice, black beans, and split peas adorn the counter near the oversized range. Color plays an essential role in our appetites. In the kitchen, we used bright colors to awaken the palate and delight the senses. A few simple but vibrant elements splashed throughout the kitchen inspire us to create not just a meal, but a feast for all the senses. As you take in the architectural and design elements of this spacious kitchen (including a beautiful coffered ceiling) make note of the use of color and the way it brings a bright burst of flavor to the room.
