Notes from the Manager

My Favorite Holiday

Is there any better holiday than Thanksgiving? For me, it is the best! Modern Thanksgiving is modeled after a 1621 Harvest Feast shared by the English Colonists of Plymouth and the Wampanoag People. The event celebrates the past year and gives thanks for the many great things in life. I am not typically a fan of our cold weather, but the Fall chill seems to add to the event's ambiance. Families come together to share great food and memories. There is no pressure of gift buying. Instead, you show up, eat and have a nice time. Oh yea … and watch the Detroit Lions lose a football game. While it is very nice to celebrate at home, it is even better to be at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club! You don't have to clean up after a party or prepare any food/drink. Let us handle that! The Club has many time slots to fit your schedule and can accommodate large groups or couples looking for a quiet Thanksgiving on their own. The Buffet features something for everyone, and you can't beat the Clubhouse ambiance. The only thing you need to do is make the reservation. But don't hesitate, as it fills up quickly!

We look forward to serving you and your loved ones.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Exciting Changes

A New Season Brings New Ideas

As fall approaches and leaves change colors, it’s a perfect time to reflect and implement new ideas. As the Communications Manager, I am always looking for ways to keep our members excited about the Club and continue participating in Club activities. As a creative, I love the challenge to make things more colorful and exciting to the eye, both literally and figuratively. After months of brainstorming with various committees and asking members what they would like in a publication, the best of both worlds came together into one amazing idea. Combining the monthly Mast Newsletter and the quarterly Grosse Pointer into a monthly magazine that will be rich in tradition and full of energy for members to enjoy bedside or poolside.

I am excited to announce our new communications magazine, The Grosse Pointer – A monthly magazine of the GPYC. You will enjoy interesting articles about various topics, such as the Club’s history, culinary excellence, fitness, event recaps, and more! The monthly events information and calendar will be at your fingertips for future and easy planning.

The first monthly Grosse Pointer distributed in December of 2022 will be a “Yearly Special Edition” issue, which lends itself perfectly as a new chapter begins at the Club every year with an introduction of the new Commodore, Board of Directors, and Fleet Officers. As valued members of the GPYC, we want to continue to provide our members with a publication with engaging content for you to enjoy.

Sincerely,

Harbor Happenings

November seems so far from March and April launch days

As the 2022 boating season winds down, Harbor Master Alex Turner and the A team are preparing the Harbor for the upcoming 2022/2023 winter season.

The Harbor will officially close as of November 1 for the season. This means water, fuel, pump outs, and all services will not be available after this date. Electricity will be available as usual. Entrance Bouys will also be taken out for the winter. Well contracts are being mailed for the 2023 season. Check your mailboxes for the contract. Please fill and return as soon as possible, along with proof of insurance. Please add The GPYC as additionally insured on your insurance documents. You may have already received your 2023 contract.

Boaters, please remove all personal items from your wells and dock boxes, especially on the East Wall, Lakeview and South Wall wells. As the Harbor team, removes the dock boxes from the well areas due to our harsh winter conditions and the damage the weather holds us hostage. We have seen many dock boxes pushed overboard due to the weather. Please also remember to remove all dock lines, hoses, bumpers, chairs, and other personal items from your well. This will help the Harbor team with winter maintenance at your well. All items left at the well will be discarded. If you need help removing any items, please contact the harbor team, and they will help in any way possible.

Ice eaters will be installed for the winter and at most wells to help alleviate ice damage to our new and old wells.

Also, keep a lookout for the 2023 well postings scheduled to go out in December.

The Harbor Committee and Harbor staff are reviewing new well numbers at each well at the pedestals and each well piling. This will help identify wells for emergency vehicles, members, guests visiting our great Club, and the Club's concierge services.

If there are any questions or concerns regarding the Harbor, please contact me at 586-530-7229 or cizzi@utsitech.com.

Regards,

Under the weather - Keeping watch onboard sailing ships was a boring and tedious job, but the worst watch station was on the “weather” (windward) side of the bow. The sailor who was assigned to this station was subject to the constant pitching and rolling of the ship. By the end of his watch, he would be soaked from the waves crashing over the bow. A sailor who was assigned to this unpleasant duty was said to be “under the weather.” Sometimes, these men fell ill and died as a result of the assignment, which is why today “under the weather” is used to refer to someone suffering from an illness. A related theory claims that ill sailors were sent below deck (or “under the weather”) if they were feeling sick.

Club Highlights

Oktoberfest in the Spinnaker was the first of many dining room pop-ups that the kitchen hopes to host. Lead by Chef John Moore, the menu included classics such as schnitzel, spaetzle, and Sauerkraut braised pork - just to name a few.

The seating was communal, and food served family style, in hopes to build a fun and community-like atmosphere. While most of the food was brought fresh and steaming from the kitchen, the spaetzle was sautéed in front of the guests by the kitchen staff.

Being the driving force behind it, Chef John Moore said, “I was really excited to host a family style Oktoberfest. We haven’t done this event before at the Club. I have a love for German food and wanted to share that with the members.” The kitchen is looking forward to providing an exceptional experience to all members through these types of dinners. Be on the lookout for the concept that matches your taste buds!

Club Highlights

3-Year Club Cooking Class Pizza Pizza!

Pizza making at the GPYC was a fun-filled evening of laughter and new friendships.

On Thursday, October 6, Chef Eric and the culinary team outdid themselves at the Three-Year Club Cooking Class. The night started with champagne, appetizers, a beautiful charcuterie board and ended with pizza!

Members created their pizzas with various tasty toppings to their liking. Once members finished their creation, the pizza was then baked in our very own stone-fired pizza oven.

It was an extraordinary evening, and the 3-year Club members thoroughly enjoyed this event.

Be sure to keep an eye out in the Weekly Buzz & Mast for more creative events like this one!

Club Spotlight

Our Catering Team makes your vision a reality!

The GPYC Catering Department has had a very busy and successful summer event season. With all of the great new staff additions, our banquets have continually received compliments on the service, food, planning, and more.

The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club Catering Department is one of the most critical components of our Club. They are responsible for planning weddings, birthday parties, Club events, holidays, and more. Our team works with the members to translate their vision to reality from the initial phone call or email inquiry up until the event is over.

The Catering Department also works closely with the banquet, set up, and kitchen departments while we are creating the menus and room designs for each of these functions. You may have seen them walking around the Club, giving venue tours, sitting down for meetings, and running around during events to ensure everything is flawless.

Membership Matters

Congratulations!

As you all know, for the past three months, we have been entering any and all members who refer a family member or friend to join the Club into our drawing for our Member Referral Contest! Our live drawing took place on October 28, 2022, on our Grosse Pointe Yacht Club Facebook page. For those of you who did not see, the winner of our contest was Holly Abessinio! Holly and her husband have been Social members for a year now. Holly referred her son, Austin Abessinio, a new Social member as of this month. We welcome Holly, Rocco, and Austin to the Club as they are all three very new to our community.

With our member referral coming to an end, please make sure you keep an eye out in the Buzz and Mast for all exciting events that are to come. Our Membership and Catering department are working diligently together to execute more fun and exciting events!

Leading this department is Maria Dallas, our Catering Director. Maria’s primary focus is to oversee her department, Corporate, and Club events. We also now have two Catering Coordinators, Sarah Barney, who handles weddings, showers, and private events. Our newest team member, Lori Tucker focuses on all our Kid friendly events and assists wherever she is needed. In addition, our Catering team works closely together to create premiere events for our members and their guests.

The GPYC looks forward to continuing to plan and provide extraordinary events for our members!

How Much Protein Do I Need?

Protein is a vital macro-nutrient whether you are trying to lose weight, gain muscle, or stay strong and healthy as you age. Protein is the primary nutritional building block to build and repair tissue, and is also essential to develop and maintain healthy bones, skin, and hair.

The importance of getting enough protein is clear. But how much protein is enough? Anywhere from 10% to 35% of your calories should come from protein. So, if your needs are 2,000 calories, that’s 200–700 calories from protein or 50–175 grams. The recommended dietary allowance to prevent deficiency for an average sedentary adult is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. For example, a person who weighs 165 pounds, or 75 kilograms, should consume 60 grams of protein daily. People who exercise regularly also have higher needs, about 1.1–1.5 grams per kilogram.

Thanksgiving Week - Open Bowling

Wednesday Thanksgiving Eve 5 - 10 p.m.

Friday & Saturday 12 - 10 p.m.

Cost is $40 per hour per lane / $7.00 shoe rental

Lunch & Dinner menus will be available on Saturday and Sunday.

Reservations are required to secure a lane. Email Gordy at Gwoods@gpyc.org.

General recommendations are to consume 15–30 grams of protein at each meal. Foods high in protein include tofu, tempeh, salmon, chicken breast, tuna, turkey, and eggs. As a warning, however, some meats and fish will have more antibiotics and chemicals than others. For example, wild-caught salmon will have healthier Omega 3 fatty acids, more vitamin B12, and Vitamin D than farm-raised salmon, which has high inflammatory Omega 6 fatty acids and antibiotics.

As always, it is essential to drink lots of water if you consume a lot of protein, especially those switching to a highprotein, low-carb diet. Drinking water aids in the metabolic breakdown of protein and will relieve any short-term bowel discomfort.

Visit me in the Fitness Center with any questions!

Best in health, Peter
