Commodore's CORNER
And just like that, it's Fall 2022 ...
After a busy year the time has come for me to write my final message to you as your Commodore. It has become cliché to remark on how fast the year goes by, but it is true and my time has been very enjoyable. To say that the year has been a challenge would be an understatement. Happily, I had tremendous support from the Board of Directors, Fleet Officers, the many Committee Chairs, and their members, as well as the management and staff of the club. These people devoted many hours of their time and talent to the club this year and have been a positive force for continuing our success. I thank you all for your dedication and love of this club! I also want to thank our Past Commodores who have been a great resource offering their wisdom and experience as we navigated the year.
I want to express my special thanks to the membership for their support, patience and understanding as we implemented two major projects: the new Main Dining Room and the renovation of the GPYC Harbor. When you include the upgraded furniture at the pool and Gazebo and providing shade for the Family Activity Center, I am confident these actions will provide our membership with real value and help to ensure the long-term future of our club. the club is well positioned with incoming Commodore Brian Fish and the Board of Directors to leverage our new amenities and renovations. They will continue to enhance the experience of our current membership while growing our club in exciting new directions.
In looking back over the year, we have had some excellent events which include Commodore’s Ball, Winter Blast, Back to the Club, In Harbor Rendezvous, Fourth of July Celebration, Up North Rendezvous and Fleet Review Weekend. The club staff did an outstanding job with these key club events.
Looking ahead, this month has our bowling leagues in full gear and will include the always popular Halloween events. I want to encourage all members to attend the Club’s Annual Meeting on November 10 where the Board of Directors will provide a yearly update on the state of the Club.
Once again, I want to express my sincere thanks to you, the members of this great Club, for your help and support. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Commodore this past year. I will always look back on this experience with fond memories.
As always, see you around the club.
God Bless, Jason Grobbel Commodore, GPYC

Notes from the Manager
Continuing the Positive Momentum
As we move into the Fall Season, I can't help but notice that the activity levels at the Club continue to be very high. Over the past 5 years, the GPYC has truly transitioned into a 12 month Club and we appreciate your support in getting there. It all begins with Vision (and some fundraising, too!). Over the past five years, the Club has raised almost five million dollars to support its mission to continue being among the world's premier yacht clubs. The only way to do that is to provide great value to you, the members, through premium programs, facilities and services. Recently, the Club was named "Best of the Best" of Metro Detroit Private Clubs by Grosse Pointe News and nationally recognized once again as "Iconic," according to Distinguished Clubs and Boardroom Magazine. The Iconic designation is only awarded to a handful of clubs in the country. We don't take any of these honors for granted. In fact, it only motivates us to continue to improve your facilities and services.
We all know inflation has caused price increases in grocery stores, retail shopping, construction projects and gas pumps. The GPYC is not immune to this. To continue delivering on our promise of excellent service, facilities, and programs, the Club adjusted pricing. We are not going to hide from that fact. We will double down on our commitment to you and ensure the value remains unquestionable for your dollars. The Club will continue to reinvest in our historic Clubhouse and continue to attract the best and brightest personnel to serve you.
This fall, we have a loaded lineup of activities, including our Annual Lauderdale Boat Show Rendezvous on October 28. If you want to sneak away for a fun weekend, this is for you! Enjoy a few days of the Lauderdale Boat Show and gather with your GPYC friends for a dinner event at Lauderdale Yacht Club. Speaking of Rendezvous, don't forget to register for 2023 Up North Rendezvous now. Slips are going fast. At the time of writing this article, we already have 18 boats signed up! The event will take place at the Killarney Mountain Lodge from July 31 - August 3. You can register by emailing me at awagner@ gpyc.org.
In local news, stop by the Main Dining Room (MDR) bar for all your favorite football games. A special themed menu is featured for the games, so don't miss any of the action. The MDR Bar is your go-to social spot all fall/winter.
Smooth sailing, Aaron Wagner General Manager

A few items of interest.
Rendezvous: The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show Rendezvous will be Friday, October 28. If you haven’t signed up please call the Front Desk to do so. All our rendezvous are a great time and allow members to come together and enjoy the camaraderie of the club to the fullest.
Well Lease Contracts: Boat well renewal lease contracts will be going out in October. Keep an eye out for them and PLEASE return them as soon as you can.
Member Concierge App: The mobile app has been a success so far without issues. Please keep using it and give us feedback.
Grog Shop: The Grog Shop will be open every day from 10 a.m.–7 p.m. through October 16. The grab-n'-go options will still be available, along with our concierge service (delivering right to your boat!) Christmas is just around the corner. Stop by to see new products that would make great gifts! Keep an eye out for popup shops during Brunch and Bowl as well.
Entrance Buoys: The entrance buoys are installed for the season outside of the entrance to the Harbor for navigation and safety. Alex has had a few inquiries regarding the proper procedure when entering and leaving the Harbor. Please keep in mind the following:
• When leaving or entering harbor please keep your vessel in between the red and green buoys.
• The area between the outer buoys and the harbor entrance is a no wake zone. This includes all boats and JET SKIS. Please do not accelerate vessels or jet skis until you are well past the last buoy outside the harbor as this causes a wake to enter back into the harbor.
Reminder:
• Any vessel leaving the harbor has the right of way.
• Any vessel and jet ski's entering the harbor MUST wait for vessels leaving the harbor to clear the harbor entrance before entering the harbor.
• Cutting between the buoys for any vessel is not permitted!
• Hail the harbor office on your VHF channel 9 or call the office (313) 6407000 to open or close the East or West swing bridges especially before entering the Harbor to ensure the bridges are open when needed.
• There is an excessive amount of marine traffic daily in and around our harbor, so please be patient when calling in for services.
Harbor Communication; It is very important that you communicate with the Harbor Master or control center when entering and exiting the harbor over VHF, especially when passing through a bridge opening or requiring fuel. A member recently noted the following situation: “I was leaving the harbor and radio requested an open swing bridge, once it was open and after I was free and clear from lines… I began to leave my well – To my surprise’ there was another boat underway passing through the harbor and through the bridge (no communication) – it was messy. Once I let the vessel pass, I proceeded to leave my well and the bridge then started closing. The tower saw the first vessel leaving the harbor and assumed I was clear of the bridge and set to close while I was maneuvering in the opening of the swing bridge area.”
This incident did not result in an accident; however, it reminds us of the importance of communication over VHF when entering and exiting the harbor, especially past a bridge. Besides avoiding bridge collisions, VHF communication also lets those preparing to leave or enter understand the traffic patterns, and it is a courtesy to your fellow boaters and the staff.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at any time. (586) 530-7229 or cizzi@utsitech.com
I hope you are enjoying the harbor and what it has to offer for the rest of the 2022 boating season.
Safe boating, Christopher Izzi GPYC 2022 Harbor Committee
Hand over fist Hand over hand was a British term for the act of moving quickly up a rope or hoisting a sail, which was a matter of pride and competition among sailors. It is thought that American sailors changed this term to ‘hand over fist’, and the term now means to advance or accumulate rapidly.

What happens at Fleet Review Stays at Fleet Review!
The highly anticipated Fleet Review Weekend was hugely successful, from the inaugural Fleet Review Regatta, Family Fun Night to Dock decorating and Dock Parties to the delicious Fleet Review Dinner. The weekend was an excellent time for members and the entire family to experience the Club.
The Inaugural Fleet Review Regatta was a great way to start the Annual Review weekend. The start and finish occurred just outside the MAC Wednesday evening. The race took about an hour, and all celebrated after at the Gazebo Bar for a post-race party. first, second, and third place flags were awarded, and additional prizes for all who participated. We look forward to this new tradition at the Club!
Family Fun Night included many games, a dunk tank, and camp out movie night on the East Lawn. An excellent kid-friendly buffet was set up for all to enjoy, complete with popcorn and ice cream. In addition, many prizes were raffled off, including a remote-control car, paddle board, guitar, gift cards, and more! Thursday evening started the famous and competitive Dock decorating; members did not disappoint with the Las Vegas Hotel-themed decorations. Many members came out to decorate their docks, and Social members gathered at the MAC to decorate.
Friday evening, members put their finishing touches as Commodore Grobbel strolled the docks to judge the Best Decorated Sailboat, Powerboat, and included Social members who decorated the Marine Activity Center this year. The Harbor Dock parties were in full swing, with our very own DJ Nick spinning tunes at the MAC and keeping the crowd dancing!
The annual Fleet Review was underway Saturday as members showed off an impressive Fleet to the Commodores and their Ladies as they reviewed it from the balcony of the MAC. Saturday evening started with a cocktail party on the East Lawn with various hors d'oeuvres. The anticipated Fleet Review Dinner did not disappoint and was a treat as members enjoyed a Cirque du Soleil-themed dinner by our Executive Chef Eric Voigt. Acrobatics and jugglers entertained the crowd, along with the "Your Generation in Concert," a 12-piece band that kept the dance floor hopping late into the evening. Members also explored the Main Dining Room for our own Las Vegas Casino night, experiencing the chance to play their hand at black jack, roulette and poker, along with great prizes donated by members.
After a long but exciting weekend, Reverend Schmidt held a beautiful Worship on the Water service in the Main Ballroom on Sunday. Members then enjoyed a Bloody Mary & Mimosa Bar, including Mike's Famous Ghost pepper seasoning!
All had a fabulous time!
For the Love of Peppers and Spice!
Who doesn't want a little spice in their life? Commodore Sean Schotthoefer and Mike, the bartender, grow various peppers in their gardens to share with you by creating the very special "Ghost Dust Spice." The idea started to recreate this spice for Fleet Review Weekend and grind the various peppers for the Fleet Review Bloody Mary Bar. It was a huge success! Schotthoefer and Mike plan to work with Chef Eric in the future to create an array of spicy sauces and rubs for your dining pleasure. So, keep an eye out for them during the tailgate season!

Membership Matters
Don't Forget!
So far, we have a few members in our raffle for the Membership Referral program.
The referral contest will be a quarter long if you haven't heard. Since it started in August, you still have another month to enter!
Every member who refers a candidate, who joins the Club, will be entered into a drawing.
At the end of the quarter, I will personally be drawing a winner to choose one of these fabulous prizes: a twohour bowling party, a Grog Shop gift basket, a training session with Athletic Director Peter Wendzinski, brunch for four, a wine basket, or a dinner in the wine cellar for four, with a custom menu by Chef Eric Voigt. You still have time to refer your family and friends to membership and encourage them to join!
Also, Three Year Club Members, don't forget to join Chef Eric and me for our last three-year event this year! We will be hosting a cooking class featuring a highly loved menu item. The cooking class is scheduled for Thursday, October 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ballroom.

GPYC Sports
The 2022-23 bowling season is up and running. The leagues are currently 95% complete, with openings in the Wednesday Night Mixed League and Thursday Morning Ladies League. Anyone interested in bowling in any of our openings can contact me at gwoods@gpyc.org.
A bowling clinic was held on September 24, which was very well attended. We held two separate clinics with 18 bowlers in each session. Both sessions were sold out, and with the help of John DiLaura, we gave our members some valuable lessons in bowling. Hopefully, this will help them during the season with their game.
Our open bowling for the season is on the second and fourth Friday of the month, 5p.m.-10p.m. and every Saturday. The Saturday times will vary depending on party bookings. Regular hours will be from 12–10 p.m. Reservations are required.
If you are interested in hosting a holiday party or any other event, a bowling party is a great way to entertain your guests. There are some available weekend dates in December, but don’t hesitate because they will be going fast. If you are interested in hosting a party, contact our talented catering directors to book your event.
Hope to see everyone in the bowling center this winter!

Customized Workouts
During my first three years as the fitness director at GPYC, I have had the privilege of training many members of all ages and athletic skill level. From 13-year-olds trying to make the team, to 90-year-olds who want to stay fit and active, every workout I write is different from one person to the next.
My main job as a personal trainer is my clients’ safety and wellbeing. The workout I compose for a 21-yearold training for the Boston Marathon is vastly different from the one I write for an 80-year-old who has had two knee replacements. However, every workout has the same goal - to better oneself and lead a better-quality life. Recently, I had a client tell me they have lost 20 pounds and can get on and off the boat easier. Another client told me since they started
strength training, they can now hold their grandson. To me, it’s the little things in life we sometimes take for granted that are the biggest indicator of workout results.
For the rest of 2022, GPYC Fitness will be offering customized workouts for $25/week. These workouts you will be able to do in the comfort of your own home with little to no equipment and will be no longer than 40 minutes each. The workouts will be completely customizable to your goals and athletic ability.
Please email me at pwendzinski@gpyc.org to get started!

Baked Apple Chips
One-ingredient homemade baked apple chips are healthy, light, crispy and crave-worthy.
All you need is 5-10 minutes to prep, and allow the apples so slow-bake over 2.5 hours.
First, preheat the oven to 200 F, and line a large 1/2 pan baking sheet with parchment paper.
Then, prepare your apples. From the bottom of the apples, slice them into very thin slices, about 1/8 thick. Place them down in a single even layer on the lined baking pan. For extra flavor, you can sprinkle some cinnamon.
Bake for 1 hour, then flip the apple slices over and bake for another 1.5 hours. If the apples aren't crispy enough, continue to bake, checking on them every 10-15 minutes.

Not long after the Club founding, leaders saw the need for an "emblem" that would help identify the new organization. It would be used as a letterhead on Club stationary, but more importantly as a burgee to fly from member's boats. The design they adopted around 1917. The original "emblem" was a "swallowtail" shape with red lettering and blue "X" on a white field. This logo served as the Clubs trademark for over a decade.
As plans for the new clubhouse and harbor took place leadership felt a need for a logo that would better express the Club's elite status. The new burgee of red and white on a blue background remains today.
