Looking back at August, I am happy to report we had a great time at this year’s Up North Rendezvous! Members met at the Bay Harbor Lake Marina on August 1 for three days of friendship and camaraderie. The itinerary featured a trip to Charlevoix on August 2 for an Afternoon Shindig on the new Rooftop at Hotel Earl where members enjoyed music, food, and beautiful views of Lake Charlevoix. The rendezvous concluded on August 3 with a trip to Lavender Hill Farm. The evening fare included BBQ catered by Boyne City’s famous Stiggs Brewery & Kitchen and live entertainment by Yankee Station, a northern Michigan favorite! Thanks to Amy Krueger Malow for contributing her time to plan the rendezvous. I also want to thank Maria Dallas for helping with many of the details and Aaron Wagner for attending and making sure everything went smoothly. Looking ahead for this month we have some great events on the calendar. We kick off the Labor Day celebrations with a Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, September 3 and the Bocce Tournament on Sunday, September 4. On Monday, September 5 we round out the holiday weekend with the traditional Barbeque on the East Lawn. The annual Milliken Rendezvous is taking place on September 15–16 at the Milliken State Park & Harbor. If you aren’t planning to attend by boat, consider coming by car to participate in the Friday night dock party. The following Saturday, September 24 is the annual Bluenose Regatta. This is a classic event that highlights the tradition of competitive sailing at our Club. Best of luck to our GPYC sailors! I hope you will join me in cheering them on! Finally, to complete a busy month, September 25 will be the day of our Fall Family Festival and Doggie Splash Day which offers our canine members a chance to enjoy the pool before it closes for the season. Don’t miss the fun!Melissa and I are also looking forward this year’s Fall Getaway Weekend to Nashville on October 7–9. Nashville is a perfect destination for members to enjoy great food, music, and camaraderie. Please see our membership director, Alexa Coole for details. All members are welcome, so please join us. As summer begins to wane, I hope you will maximize the opportunities to use the club before the season changes. Stay tuned to the Weekly Buzz for this month’s additional events as they are announced. I hope to see you around the club and on the water.

Looking ahead, the Club is visiting Fort Lauderdale for the Annual Lauderdale Boat Show at the end of October. The Boat Show is always a great time, and the Club has planned a dinner event at Lauderdale Yacht Club on October 28. Please sign up via the Front Desk at switchboard@gpyc.org today. Lastly, the Club is pleased to announce that the 2023 Up North Rendezvous will take place at Killarney on July 31-August 3. This picturesque town is located on the northern shore of the Georgian Bay in the Sudbury District of Columbia, Ontario. The town was founded in 1820 as a fur trading post, and most of the surrounding area is still relatively untouched. Reserve your spot for this rendezvous by emailing me at awagner@gpyc.org.

Holding on to a Great Summer!

Summer 2022 was always going to be big after a few years of pent-up demand. On behalf of my entire staff, I want to thank you for supporting the Club the way you did this summer by participating in the many activities and events we offered as well as regular dining. From Memorial Day Weekend to Fleet Review, you and your family/friends made this summer one of the biggest and most successful in recent history. Speaking of Fleet Review, congratulations to all of our Dock Winners. The Vegas Casino themes were spectacular! The fun doesn’t end with the Fall season. In fact, we are keeping it going strong! Make plans to have a staycation at the Club for Labor Day Weekend. There will be a Poolside Pop-Up BBQ theme each afternoon at the Harborside Grill. Catch Boaters Breakfast Saturday, September 3, and participate in the Fishing Rodeo. There have been some really big fish caught on the outer wall of the Harbor this year. Find your lucky spot and win prizes at the Rodeo! On Sunday, September 4, the Club features the annual Labor Day Bocce Tournament. This event is a great way to meet new friends in a fun and casual setting. Be sure to sign up now before the spots are sold out. The weekend finishes with Pool Games and the big Labor Day BBQ on the East Lawn on Monday, September 5. Friendly reminder, please make reservations in advance for any dining on the Holiday Weekend to guarantee your spot. It will be busy, and I don’t want anyone to miss out on the fun. Great news! The Pool, Harborside Grill, and Gazebo Bar will stay open even after Labor Day. September has been one of the best weather months over the past couple of years, so make sure to take full advantage of it by visiting the Pool. The Pool and Harborside Grill will be open each weekend (Saturdays and Sundays) through September as long as the weather permits. The Gazebo Bar will also be open 7 days in the afternoons (weather permitting). Do you have a dog that likes to swim? This year will mark our third annual Doggie Splash Day on September 25. Make plans to bring your dog and let them enjoy the Pool on its last open day. I would like to remind our boaters of three key rendezvous. The first is coming up fast and takes place at Milliken Marina. For those that may not know, Milliken Marina is located in Detroit and features a wonderful park and easy access to the Riverwalk. It is a quick and easy run via any type of boat and is always very lively and social. If you haven’t done so, please sign up by emailing the Front Desk at switchboard@gpyc.org. The dates are 9/16-9/18.

• Any vessel leaving the Harbor has the right way.

Labor Day weekend: September 2-5

We hope that you're enjoying your boating season and the GPYC Harbor!

• Hail the harbor office on your VHF channel 9 or call the office 313-640-7000 to open or close the East or West swing bridges, especially before entering the Harbor, to ensure the bridges are open when needed. There is excessive marine traffic daily in and around our Harbor, so please be patient when calling for services.

Harbormaster Alex Turner and his staff are prepared to help you in any way they can to make your time in the Harbor an enjoyable experience. The Harbor Staff has completed their spring maintenance projects and is working diligently to keep the Harbor safe and clean. So let's enjoy a safe summer in our beautiful Harbor!

• HARBOR Communication at all timesnotes from a member – perhaps a reminder to communicate with the harbor master or control center when entering and to exit the Harbor over VHF? Recently, I was leaving the Harbor - radio requested an open swing bridge; once it was open and after I was free and clear from lines… I began to leave my well – To my surprise, another boat was leaving the Harbor and was fully underway (no communication) – it was messy. Then once I let the vessel pass, I proceeded to leave my well, and the bridge was closing. The tower saw that vessel leaving the Harbor and assumed I was clear of the bridge and set to close while I was maneuvering in the opening of the swing bridge area.

• Any vessel or jet skis cutting between the buoys are not permitted!!!

Safe GPYCChristopherboating,Izzi2022Harbor Committee

Ship crews received a variety of signals from the boatswain's pipe. One signal was "piping down the hammocks," which instructed the crew to go below decks and prepare for sleep.

Entrance Buoys: The entrance buoys are installed for the season outside the entrance to the Harbor for navigating the Harbor entrance and safety. Alex has had a few inquiries regarding the proper procedure for entering and leaving the Harbor. Please keep in mind the following:

• The area between the outer buoys and the harbor entrance is a no-wake zone. This includes all boats and JET SKIS. Please do not accelerate vessels or jet skis until you are well past the last buoy outside the Harbor, as this causes a wake to enter back into the Harbor.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at any time.

Blue Nose Regatta: September 24

• When leaving or entering Harbor, please keep your vessel in between the red and green buoys.

Well lease contracts: The Boat well renewal lease contracts will be going out in October. So keep an eye out for them, and PLEASE return them as soon as possible.

Enjoy the Harbor, what is has to offer and the rest of the 2022 boating season.

Nautical terms of interest.

KIPSU: Kipsu has been a success so far without issues. Keep using it!!!

Flotsam and Jetsam Odds and ends.

A FEW ITEMS OF INTEREST. Rendezvous: The always fun Milliken rendezvous is coming up September 16 –18. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show rendezvous will be Friday, October 28. If you haven't signed up, please call the front desk. All our rendezvous are a great time. New members and our veteran members seem to come together and enjoy the camaraderie between members to the fullest.

There were no incidents; however, I feel that we need to stress the importance of communication over VHF when entering and exiting the Harbor. It lets those preparing to leave or enter understand the traffic patterns and allow for courtesy.

• Any vessel & JET SKIs entering the Harbor MUST wait for vessels leaving the Harbor to clear the harbor entrance before entering the Harbor.

While the words flotsam and jetsam are often used together, they have different meanings. "Flotsam" (from the word "float") describes items that weren't deliberately thrown overboard, while "jetsam" (from the word "jettison") describes items that were deliberately thrown overboard.

Jacob will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison next year to study real estate & finance.

Jacob Tomlinson was a sailfish from 2011 to 2015, took a bit of a hiatus, and rejoined the team as a Senior this year. His favorite race to swim was the 25 Fly and 50 Free.

Sophie will be a senior at Grosse Pointe South and will serve as senior co-captain on their Girls Varsity Swimming team in pursuit of the state title, and she will continue swimming year-round for the Grosse Pointe Gators. Sophie has verbally committed to swim Division 1 at the University of Cincinnati starting fall of 2023.

Jacob wants to remind the younger swimmers that the summer swim team is all about having fun with your teammates.

During the season's final dual meet against the Detroit Golf Club on July 19th, the GPYC Sailfish Swim Team celebrated their four Senior Swimmers, Genevieve Boutrous, Sophie Schuetze, Jacob Tomlinson, and Hannah Wheatley. To celebrate the Seniors, they each answered a series of four questions. Here is some of what they had to say.

8

Genevieve will be a senior at Grosse Pointe South with hopes of attending a Big 10 University, with special consideration for Penn State University and Indiana University. However, she is not entirely set on her major for college as she has some time but is currently juggling between studying political science or sports journalism while also continuing to study Spanish.

SUN & FUN AT THE CLUB

Celebrating our Senior Sailfish Swimmers

Genevieve Boutrous has been a Sailfish since 2010. One of her favorite memories from being on the team was toilet papering the wrong house during finals week in 2019. Her greatest achievements as a swimmer were getting an NCSA Age Group National cut in the 500 freestyle in 2018 and being a part of the record-breaking and first-place 8 & under free relay with teammates Sophie Schuetze and Jacob Tomlinson. Her advice to the younger swimmers is to try their best to talk to and meet new swimmers from different teams because it will make your swimming experience in MICSA much more fun and memorable. Genevieve felt she was very fortunate to have made many friends through this league who have positively impacted her swimming experience and whose friendships she will be in contact with forever. Also, try to steer away from being overly competitive!

Hannah Wheatley has been involved in MICSA since 2009 and became a Sailfish in 2019. She had a difficult time picking her favorite memory. One of Hannah's favorite experiences at GPYC was jumping in the pool with many of her teammates

Sophie Schuetze started at 4 in 2009 and swam for the Sailfish for 14 years. Her favorite memories include the firecracker Fourth of July practice with Coach Fo and Coach Bill and my first finals at the Grosse Pointe Hunt Club at age 6. Sophie's greatest achievements in swimming were breaking the 8&U 100-meter free relay with Genevieve and Jacob Tomlinson and racing to four times All-State honors at the 2021 Division 2 High School Girls Swimming Championships. In addition, she helped GP South earn the most points in program history to finish State-runner ups. Sophie's advice is to learn to be confident in your abilities, listen to your coaches, be nice to your parents, swim at the Pontch relays, and not be afraid to dance with your family and friends!

so enjoyable. She is sad to think that her time is up but is grateful for everything she has experienced and been a part of this amazing league. She will forever cherish the good times and hopes to return next year to help the team. Hannah will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall. She is not 100% sure what she will major in but is interested in the pre-dental program with a minor in business.

MATTERSMEMBERSHIPSPOTLIGHT

AlexaBest, MembershipCoole Director Greetings! For those of you that I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting in person, let me introduce myself. My name is Michael Lee. As of Tuesday, July 5, 2022, I became the Security Director for the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. I’ve only served in this capacity for less than a month. However, I have found it to be a rewarding experience so far. I bring to this position over 35 years of police, security, and education experience. In addition, I am a lifelong Detroiter and a frequent visitor of the Grosse Pointe area as I live just six miles from the club. When I first spoke with Aaron Wagner about this position, he strongly emphasized the need for professionalism in the Security Department. I am firmly committed to providing the club with the level of professionalism that this historic institution deserves. We will constantly strive to ensure that the members, employees, and visitors of the GPYC are safe and secure while on these premises. Although all of our security measures are not visible to the naked eye, I can assure you that multiple layers of proactive elements are in place to achieve the stated ends. Furthermore, I will constantly endeavor to modernize the club’s security apparatus while working with internal and external partners. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or security issues by emailing frontgate@gpyc.org. I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

At What Age Should My Kid Start Lifting Weights?

Please call (313) 640-7016 with questions or to sign up for any of our programs and events. Email Dmitri at tennispro@gpyc.org

I have no doubt that both pickle and tennis will continue to grow for years to come at the club! I look forward to many more memories on the courts together!

"My kid is 12; may they start lifting weights?" is a common question I get from parents with pre-teen children. The short answer is, "it depends." There is no magic age at which a child can start lifting weights. There are many factors not related to age that anyone, regardless of age, must master before they should even consider picking up a weight. Before you start weight training, you need to be proficient in basic bodyweight movements such as squats, push-ups (on your knees counts,) and holding a plank. For every new client I train, no matter their age, I put them through the same evaluation of those three exercises before picking up a dumbbell. This is because weight training involves complex movements requiring a person to be coordinated. If someone can't do a proper squat with just their body weight, adding weight could result in injury. On the other hand, if you or your child are efficient at bodyweight movements, you may move on to more advanced ones.

It is also important not to confuse strength training with weightlifting, bodybuilding, or powerlifting. Trying to build big muscles can put too much strain on young muscles, tendons, and areas of cartilage that haven't yet turned to bone (growth plates) –especially when proper technique is sacrificed in favor of lifting more significant amounts of weight. If your child is interested in strength training, remind them that strength training is meant to increase muscle strength and endurance. Bulking up is something else entirely – and most safely done after adolescence when your child's bones have finished growing.

If you are looking to book a party at GPYC, a bowling party is a great way to entertain your guest. Just contact our catering department and let us handle the rest.

My best advice for anyone, especially kids looking to exercise, is to keep it fun!

Working out shouldn't be a chore and should be something you genuinely enjoy doing. Please don't hesitate to stop by the Fitness Center with any questions!

Our 2022-23 bowling season is just about upon us. The Leagues will be starting the week of September 26th and begins with the Monday Night Men's league. This is a very exciting league with some excellent bowlers. We are expecting some outstanding scores this season. This league is currently at capacity, but we are always in need of substitute bowlers. Our Wednesday and Thursday Night mixed leagues are geared toward any skilled bowler. However, you do not need to be an established bowler to participate in our leagues. We have a wide range of talent, from beginners to advanced. We also offer a Thursday Morning Ladies league starting at 10 a.m. This league offers a variety of abilities for bowlers, from beginners to advanced. We also offer a couples league that bowls monthly on Friday Nights. We have two separate Friday Leagues. Couples #1 bowls on the 1st Friday of the month, and Couples #2 bowls on the 3rd Friday of the month. Both leagues start in October and bowl six sessions thru April. Couples bowling is very popular with the younger members and is a great way to meet new members.Ifyouwould like more information on any of our leagues, call (313) 640-7005 or email Gordy Woods at gwoods@gpyc.org.
