LIGHTNING SCARLET

Whoosh!

A typical day at Quiet Cam1>us University. Suddenly

"Look, up in the sky! Is it a plan<', i< it a bird? No! It's Lightning Scarlet!"

Yes it is Lightning Scarlet. Defender ol truth, justice, the American way and a chicken in cvcry pot.

Who?

Who?

" Q uiet Campus University need no longer lear the ravages ol rampant crime. Panty raids arc a thing olthc p.lSI."

What?

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Our he ro rct~ssurcs the pttnic kint; "'"sses w ith his winning smile and a calm word : " Hold it." "It's only air pollution!"

"Look, it's working, his pu lse is dropping. "

Gone, but not forgotten.

Huh?

" We haven' t cleaned up the environment yel. If you drink enough m ilk those green spots will disappear from your faces."' Suddenly the M an of Might doubl<'s up in pain.

M eanwhile, hidden deep in the dark recesses of the science building, the forces of Oarl.ncss and Evtl arc hatching a foul plot. " Stick another pin in, try the heart this time."

As lightning Scarlet slowly dies.

He: Did you hear about Lightning Scarlet I She:Whol

Go placidly amid the noise & haste, & remember what peace there may be in silence. A s far as possible without surre nder be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud & aggressive persons, they are vexation s to the spirit. If you compare yourse lf with others, you may become vain & bitter; for always there will be greater & lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own caree r, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortune s of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not fei gn affection. Neither be cynical about love; fori n the face of all aridity & disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefu lly surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strengt h of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imag inings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace w ith God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your sou l. With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. DESIDERATA
