According to the experts, it was founded in 1078 when the Norman king William ordered the White Tower - a square fortress - to be built. The whole aim of building the structure was to protect the London from outside invaders. Ever since it was built, it was protected by the Normans from the people of the City. The great thing about the structure is that it was built using Caen stone, imported from France.

After some time, in the 12th century, King Richard the Lionheart got a moat dug around it and filled with water from the Thames. The most famous use of the Tower of London over the centuries was as a prison, besides being the home o the crown jewels since the 14th century. It was used as a prison or those of high ranked religious residents. Ranulf Flambard, the Bishop of Durham, was the first prisoner of the tower for being found guilty extortion in 1100.
