Pre-K: Happy Little Feet (2-3Y)

Your younger pre-k child will have lots of fun in this unparented program. We will encourage your child’s creativity and imagination through themed-based classes that include elements like tapping their toes and sing-alongs, as well as crafts and active free play. As this program is for 2–3-year-olds, children should be able to use the washroom independently or use disposable training pants. Please bring indoor shoes and a water bottle.

Pre-K: Movers & Makers (3-5Y)

This fun and interactive program provides young learners the opportunity to make new friends, learn through play and build skills for school readiness. Each week your child will start their day by exploring a new theme through circle time, songs, art, science activities and stories. Children will also get the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of games and sports in the Rec Centre Gymnasium. Please send your child with a water bottle, indoor shoes and a small nut-free snack. Children must be toilet trained.

LIFESAVING COURSES

SWIM LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS

Parent and Tot 1: 4-12 Months

Parents and babies will explore the water together under the watchful eyes of their instructor. They will learn how to safely enter and exit the water and work on getting ready to discover the water safely. Parents will learn how to safely support their child while they play.

Parent and Tot 2: 12-24 Months

Instructors will lead sessions to help parents with children learn basic water safety skills in a welcoming environment. Parents are taught how to support their child with assisted entries and exits into water and support them in learning to float and kick. They can celebrate together when the child can get their face wet and blow bubbles for the first time.

Parent and Tot 3: 2-3 Years

Parents will work towards supporting their toddlers in becoming more independent in the water including getting in, getting out, going under, and floating. Parents and toddlers will be introduced to different iterations of these fundamental skills.

Preschool 1

These preschoolers will learn to get in and out of the water safely, how to move safely in shallow water and use a lifejacket to be comfortable with their floats and glides.

Preschool 2

These youngsters will explore the water by learning to submerge and exhale underwater. Buoyant aids are used to help them discover rollovers, glides and flutter kicks.

Preschool 3

These preschoolers will master their floats, glides and short swims on their front and back (2-3 m). They’ll be able to pick up objects from the waist deep water and use their lifejackets to jump and roll into the deep end.

Preschool 4

Preschoolers will gain some independence in deep water. They will practice jumping into deeper water (including getting out by themselves), sideways entries, and opening their eyes under water. These swimmers in training will work on completing 5m of front crawl in their lifejackets and work on their ability to tread water.

Preschool 5

These skilled and independent youngsters will master short swims doing front crawl (5-10 m) and back crawl (3-5 m). They are ready to take on a forward roll into deep water with their lifejacket on and to tread water without the extra support. Here they will get their first chance to try whip kick and fitness training.

Swimmer 1

These beginning swimmers will work on safe entries, exits and moving through the water. When ready, they’ll do floats, glides and kicking on their front and back without assistance. They’ll even explore jumping into deep water and treading water with their lifejackets on.

Swimmer 2

These children will be able to jump or side roll into deep water, tread water, and swim (10-15 m) using either front crawl or back crawl. They’ll try ‘vertical’ whip kick and begin to work on their endurance level by stepping into the world of fitness interval training.

Swimmer 3

These swimmers will dive and do forward rolls into deep water. Watch them learn handstands and front somersaults underwater. They’ll work on their front crawl, back crawl and whip kick over short distances and add some interval fitness training to their practice.

Swimmer 4

These swimmers will swim further with their front crawl and back crawl. They’ll get introduced to breaststroke arms drills, underwater swims and front crawl sprints. Interval training will add to their fitness level.

Swimmer 5

These swimmers will try eggbeater kick, head up front crawl, and shallow dives. And just for fun, they’ll try ‘tuck’ jumps and underwater back somersaults. They’ll easily go the distance with a strong front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

Swimmer 6

These swimmers will master eggbeater and scissor kicks, front crawl, breaststroke and back crawl. With the interval training and sprint racing drills they’ll be ready to make the 300 m endurance workout. And just for fun, they’ll try stride jumps and compact jumps. Next step: on to the Canadian Swim Patrol program from Swimmer 6.
