Editor’s Letter
Welcome to the June Magazine! Did you know there is a Volunteers’ Week? It runs from the 1st to 7th June. Many of the articles in this month's magazine feature the work of volunteers and charity workers who do so much good in our local community. Read about how you can make a difference with Wiltshire's Big Pledge, and don't forget that it is Wrong Trousers Day on June 26th! Our cover picture reminds us that Wimbledon fortnight starts on the 29th June, so if you are thinking of taking up the sport why not visit Calne Tennis Club. Another activity to try is M4 Karting in Hullavington - see page 59 for details. We have a great competition prize in this issue - two weekend tickets to WOMAD - see centre pages for how to enter. Once again, a big thank you to everyone who sent in contributions to this issue - Fun4All, NCE, Wiltshire Air Ambulance and many more. Until next time ...

National Computer Engineering continues support for Wiltshire Air Ambulance throughout 2015 by Chloe Zebedee, NCE Computer Group (Europe) Ltd
W
ILTSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE is close to our hearts here at NCE Computer Group as two employees have been air lifted and therefore we all appreciate the great work the charity do. I was airlifted as a child after a horse riding accident and a colleague of mine Niki Stokes, was also airlifted after a car accident outside of the Soho in Chippenham. Luckily we both had minor injuries but are extremely grateful for the support of the charity. NCE Computer group therefore decided to support the charity in 2014 and after discussions at the beginning the year, have decided to continue supporting the charity throughout 2015. After a successful year fundraising for the charity throughout 2014, and raising an impressive total of £5730.60 by attending and organising various events, NCE’s Managing Director, Andrew Genever commented, “The work the team at Wiltshire Air Ambulance do and being close to home for many of us here at NCE, it was an obvious choice for us to continue to support such a worthy cause for another year”. Wiltshire Air Ambulance, who recently celebrated their 25th anniversary as well as re-branding and launching the first HEMS Bell 429 Helicopter in the UK are

The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2015
thrilled to have the support of NCE for another year. Rebecca de la Bedoyere, Fundraising Manager at Wiltshire Air Ambulance said, "We are delighted that NCE has decided to continue to support us in this way. We thoroughly enjoyed working with them in 2014 and really admire their enthusiasm, commitment and creativity. We're very much looking forward to developing the partnership further and working together to raise funds to keep our life-saving helicopter and crew flying. Our costs have more than tripled since our partnership with Wiltshire Police ended on 31 December, and the support of NCE and the business community in general is vital to us." NCE employees were involved in various activities throughout 2014 in order to raise money for the charity. Employees took part in a 15,000ft tandem sky dive over Salisbury plain, The Marlborough Downs Challenge, and Beat The
Pro at Bowood Golf Course as well as various raffles and volunteering in Air Ambulance Week back in September. NCE also held ‘The Great NCE Bake Off’ at their HQ in Calne and after such success held a similar, ‘The Alternative Christmas Bake Off’ later in the year. NCE hope to beat their total from 2014 by organising various events through out the year including, a charity golf day at Bowood, The White Horse Challenge and holding ‘The Great NCE Bake Off’ and ‘The Alternative Christmas Bake Off’ again making them an annual tradition for the company. You can find out what events and activities NCE have planned in order to beat their target and donate to the worthy cause by visiting the Wiltshire Air Ambulance page on their website. www.nceeurope.com/ about-us/company-profile/ wiltshire-air-ambulance

Have you ever had the urge to do something outlandish, like go shopping in your pyjamas, or turn up for work in a pair of Speedos? Well, now you can – hopefully without being arrested! – whilst simultaneously earning money for charity! Since 2003, the Wallace and Gromit Charity has been raising funds for sick children in hospitals and hospices throughout the United Kingdom by encouraging people like you and me to show up for school or work wearing their wackiest clothes. Over the past fourteen years, Wallace and Gromit’s Wrong Trousers Day has raised over £2 million which has been used to help buy specialist equipment, fund arts, music and therapy programmes, provide family accommodation and offer respite care. The charity’s aim is to ensure that whilst in hospital and hospice care, children can still play, socialise and recuperate from treatment in a child-friendly environment. Every £1 donated by wearing the wrong kind of trousers helps them achieve just that. Anyone can participate in Wrong Trousers Day, which takes place this year on Friday 26th June. Just register your event at www. wallaceandgromitcharity.org/event/wallacegromits-wrong-trousers-day to receive a free fundraising pack, then all you need do is persuade lots of people to join with you in looking ridiculous for a day!

OLUNTEERS’ WEEK IS A fantastic annual celebration of the amazing work that millions of volunteers do across the UK. It’s been running for over thirty years and aims to showcase volunteering work and its benefits. (see www.volunteersweek.org) Volunteers now work in many different types of organisations. Last year in my immediate local area I interviewed a small sample and they included: dog-walkers for the Retired Greyhound Trust, a lady who was part of the costume team at a theatre, a school governor and a volunteer baker at one of the oldest watermills in Birmingham. There are a vast array of options for all ages and abilities. You can volunteer in your local neighbourhood, online or even abroad. Close to home, you could for instance, work in a charity shop, run a scout group, take part in conservation work at your local canal, help do the administrative tasks for a charity, be a Guide at
a National Trust Stately Home or befriend those in hospital for instance. Some employers give staff paid time off to do occasional volunteering and some have employer-supported volunteering schemes. To find out about opportunities, you can contact charities and organisations directly or get in touch with your local Volunteer Centre. One of the main online resources is the National Council of Voluntary Organisation website: www.ncvo.org.uk . On there, you can find links to thousands of positions as well as lots of valuable information. They suggest that if you are looking for a voluntary role, you firstly need to consider what type of cause you want to work for and then seek out relevant organisations. When you have selected some preferred organisations, you should research them thoroughly and try to speak
to some of those who currently volunteer for them to find out what it’s really like. You should also consider the skills you have to offer or want to acquire and the time you have available so that you can select the most suitable type of role. It’s also a good idea to undertake a trial period or shadowing so that both parties can see if it will be a good fit. There are many potential benefits to volunteering including: a sense of pride at having given something back to your community, making new friends, a chance to gain new skills and work in an environment or for a cause that you are passionate about. If you’d like to add travelling to your outcomes, you could also consider volunteering abroad. Take a look at the websites such as Volunteer Services Overseas, www.vsointernational.org, Tourist Concern tourismconcern.org. uk/volunteer and UN Volunteers www.unv.org to find out more.

Friends of Angel's Orphanage
The Nepal Earthquake by Dr. Rosa Matheson
I
N 2009 my husband was asked to ‘volunteer’. It went something like this – “Dad, how do you fancy coming to Nepal?” The person asking was our son who at the time was a medical student at St George Hospital, London. Dad, was a retired GP.. Our son and his fellow students had put together a medical mission whereby Georges’ students and qualified doctors from U.K would work with Nepale medical students and doctors and go to the hill (mountains to you and me) villages in Nepal where there was little or no medical or surgical services. Our son was a pair of qualified medical hands short and hence the request to ‘volunteer’. Dad went and I, Mum, went too. Not being medical I was ‘volunteered’ for ‘the glasses clinic’ and very humbling and moving it was too. Never throw away your glasses – always donate them. Through clinics such as these you can change a person’s life with a pair of glasses. Whilst in ’base camp’ Kathmandu we met a man (Angel) who said “I have a big family with lots of sick children but no money for medicines.” We went to see and the ‘big family’ turned out to be a small orphanage of then 22 now 21 children and their ‘mommy’ and ‘papa’. We decided to ‘adopt’ them and created a charity called ‘Friends of Angel’s Orphanage’. We are very ‘hands on’ and go back regularly. We saw that the 100s of orphanages in Kathmandu were not full of real orphans, but many abandon or ‘given-up’ children too, given-up by their widowed mothers who had no way of making a living to be able to feed them. We started another charity the BOOK PROJECT (you may have read of it in this magazine) which sponsors programmes that ‘skill-up’ Nepale women enabling them to help themselves and keep their families together or that breaks new ground for women’s employment. Sending aid - we need more of this...now...
Above: Our children when we first met them 2009 Below: Our children now
Because of this work we know and have become good friends with many Nepalese people so when the earthquakes shook the country with such a devastating effect there was no option for us but to get stuck in and help. Fortunately our ‘big family’ are unharmed and safe as is possible at the moment, however, friends here knowing our ‘hands-on’ direct way of working approached us with donations to help bring relief to those in immediate need. We have already sent out money which has done this, buying rice, lentils, medicines, baby formula, antidiarrhoea tablets, and mattresses and delivered to villagers, but, as you will know from the horrendous scenes and reports, much more needs to be done. We also want to build an ‘earth-bag’ communitydwelling for people to shelter in whilst they are building their own homes, especially widows and their children. Earth-bag buildings are particularly good for areas prone to earthquakes. In one village such a centre was the only building left standing after the quakes.
22
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2015
Our plan is to collect a team of experienced ‘earthbuilders’ and other volunteers to go out after the rains - probably late September. We’re asking volunteers to raise some money towards the project as well as covering their own costs. To help these projects please donate at www.bit.ly/angelsbiggive

Fun4All
Helping unpaid Carers by Mike Oakes, Fun4All In my article for the Town Crier in 2013, I wrote about the difficulties I had experienced in establishing my charity Fun4All, with the aims of giving unpaid Carers a muchneeded break. I am pleased to report that most of those problems have now been overcome and the charity now has over 100 members and is able to provide regular breaks and activities for them. I have a feeling that at least 50 people in the Chippenham area have recently become unpaid Carers at home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which they undertake out of love, but which places tremendous pressures upon their daily lives and they eventually have a need of a break from their responsibilities. It is to those people that this article is aimed. If you, or someone you know, is in this situation then please consider if Fun4All can help. For a membership fee of just ÂŁ5 a year we can offer a series of events on a monthly basis that they can attend and find friendship, laughter, and goodwill from people in a similar situation and this provides a welcome change from their daily caring routine. We use our funds to subsidise these events to make them affordable and currently they are charged out at ÂŁ3 per person. Having now gained Registered Charity status we have been fortunate to secure larger funding amounts which enables us to provide our monthly programme of events and in 2015 this includes many varied activities. Although our primary aim is to help the Carer we do realise that sometimes they cannot leave the one they Care For 24
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2015
with someone else. Therefore we do allow both to attend events but on the understanding that Fun4All does NOT provide any care ourselves, that remains the responsibility of the Carer. Our flagship event is our annual Luxury Weekend Break in the Hilton Hotel, Swindon, where our members enjoy great accommodation, great food, great activities and great entertainment. In February 2015 we had 4 different musical entertainers and we were thrilled to receive a visit from the Colerne Military Wives Choir. This event is cost-neutral and we negotiate favourable rates with the hotel and attendees paid ÂŁ150 per person for the whole weekend, great value in a 4-star hotel. The testimonials we received after this event shows that our aims are being met, as so many Carers stated how much they enjoyed it, how they felt included rather than excluded,
and they returned home more able to face up to their full-time caring responsibilities. Fun4All is not-for-profit, we have no premises and no paid officials, we give our time freely and we do try to make if FUN !! If you think you might find our charity useful, or if you know of someone who might benefit then please contact us initially via the media below. If you think you might want to help us by becoming a committee member then also contact us. Alternatively if you just want to donate to help us continue to thrive then please do so via our website www.fun4all.org.uk For further details please contact Mike Oakes via e-mail chair@fun4all.org.uk or Telephone 01249 660010.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance
Challenges raising funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) is challenging people to walk, cycle or trek during its Silver Jubilee year and raise money for the lifesaving service. There is the White Horse Challenge, a sponsored walk involving seven of the county’s White Horses on July 4 and 5, the Wiltshire Big Wheel, a public cycling event beginning and ending in Devizes on September 6, and a 100km Trek across the Sahara Desert from October 10 to 18 2015. The White Horse Challenge is in its tenth year and has raised £110,000 for WAA. Organised by Wiltshire businesses Monahans Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers, Rygor Commercials and Rocking Horse Nursery, distances range from a seven mile family challenge to the full 52 miles. This is the first time that WAA is taking part in the Wiltshire Big Wheel, organised by Bristol-based Bike Events, and the charity has 40 places available. Riders can choose from a 12 mile family challenge, 45 mile or 100 mile route. The Sahara trek in Morocco is a 100 km trek through stunning scenery and there are 16 places available. It is organised by Adventurous Ewe. Rebecca de la Bedoyere, WAA’s Fundraising Manager, said: “We’re delighted to offer these fantastic challenge events for our Silver Jubilee year. We’ve been flying and saving lives for 25 years thanks to the amazing people of Wiltshire, and we’re really hoping people will get stuck into a challenge this year and go the extra mile to raise vital funds.” Information about all of the challenge events are on WAA’s website, www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk
Wiltshire Air Ambulance launches volunteer Facebook page WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) has set up a dedicated Facebook page for its volunteers. The page - www.facebook.com/waavolunteer - is for existing WAA volunteers and for people interested in becoming a volunteer with the charity. Jemma Brown, WAA’s Volunteer Manager, said: “The Volunteer Facebook page is there to celebrate the incredible work our volunteers do for us and it’s also there to help recruit new volunteers. Other charities have volunteer Facebook pages and their volunteers use them regularly. “We are using it to update our volunteers on events that are coming up and where we would like their help. We encourage our volunteers to post updates about events they have been to. Since we set the page up a few weeks ago we have had six enquiries from people interested in becoming a volunteer for us, which is brilliant.” Yanti Pegler, of Melksham, who has been a volunteer with WAA for three years said the Facebook page is a useful tool to enable volunteers to be kept up to date with information. She said: “It’s great, it’s so easy to keep in touch with what’s going on. It’s such a privilege to be part of Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s team. Being a volunteer is rewarding and fun. Join us and you will also have fun. When we have fun, they (the air ambulance) keep flying and we help to keep them flying!” WAA has about 70 active volunteers and would like to increase the number to 100 by the end of 2015. The charity is holding an event on Saturday June 6 from 10am to 12.30pm at Devizes during National Volunteers’ Week for existing volunteers and people interested in becoming volunteers. Jemma said: “Our volunteers are our ambassadors and we would like more to enable us to cover events that are going on in the community. Our volunteers represent Wiltshire Air Ambulance at fundraising events, attend cheque presentations and give talks. Our volunteers are enthusiastic and have a passion for what we do. We couldn’t do what we do without them and we would love more people to join us.” For more information about becoming a volunteer with WAA or the event on June 6 email jemma@ wiltshireairambulance.co.uk or call 01380 739453.

Health & Beauty
Brow Beaten? Our guide to beautiful brows and lashes
I
WAS BORN WITH MY dad’s eyebrows. Naturally thick, shapeless and unsightly, they looked like two caterpillars stuck to my forehead. At age twelve I followed the fashion of the day and plucked away until they were within a whisper of totally disappearing - and I was on the point of fainting! Today, my eyebrows are thin, shapeless and unsightly and I’m resigned to them looking that way forever. Or rather I was… Internet searches assure me that no matter how over-plucked, over-waxed or over-groomed your eyebrows may be, there is hope still for beautiful, arched, perfectly coiffed specimens. The most extreme method might be an eyebrow transplant (yes really!), but there are other less drastic options! Most of us ladies – and the odd gent too – need to lose a few hairs from the brow line. The easiest solution is tweezing away the stray hairs yourself, but the results are short-lived and the risk of creating the wrong shape is high. 32
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2015
Better results can be achieved by a professional, with waxing and threading methods achieving hair removal lasting around 4-6 weeks. Fair or very thin eyebrows may benefit from being tinted. Like hair dye, this changes the colour and lasts 4-6 weeks. A popular look at the moment is HD (High Definition) Brows which focus on shape and design and promise to give you sleek, stylish brows like those enjoyed by the stars. A seven step process that includes a consultation followed by tinting, waxing, threading, tweezing, trimming and finishing with a pencil or brush to fill in any gaps, is described as more than just shaping or tidying but actual eyebrow artistry! With your brows looking beautiful brows it’s time to move on to the eyelashes. There are numerous mascaras around promising volume, length and thickness, and I can vouch for some of them actually working! My daughter’s naturally long lashes were taken to another level following the
application of a new mascara. But what else is on offer? Tinting is an option if your lashes are particularly fair, and it’s not just for girls. I remember the difference it made to my friend’s son after his lashes were darkened. Curling makes straight lashes appear longer, and creates the illusion of wider, brighter, more feminine eyes. Lash-perming, which is best carried out by a professional, can make the results can last for six weeks, which is great for holidays or if you have any big events lined up. Finally, how about having eyelash extensions? This is one of the UK’s fastest growing beauty treatments and involves gluing separate synthetic eyelashes to individual natural lashes to give a luscious, natural look. The amount of curl, length or thickness can vary according to your personal preference and the results last for 8-12 weeks depending on your natural lash growth cycle.

Game, Set and Match! It’s Wimbledon fortnight!
A
BROKEN pony-roller belonging to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club was the catalyst which led to the birth of the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world: Wimbledon. When the roller broke in 1877 the members decided to hold a lawn tennis competition to raise funds for repair. There were 22 male competitors who each paid a one guinea entrance fee. The champion was 27-year-old Spencer Gore who won 12 guineas and yes, it did rain on the day of the finals! In spite of the weather the competition was such a success that it became an annual event. In fact there have been only ten Wimbledon-free years since that first competition: four years during the First World War and six during the Second World War. At the start the only event was the gentlemen’s singles. Then, in 1884 the ladies’ singles and the gentlemen’s doubles were added, followed by the ladies’ doubles and the mixed doubles in 1913. Only top-ranked amateurs were allowed to play until 1968 when the tournament became ‘open’, meaning that professionals could finally enter. 36
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2015
Every year about 27,000 kilos of strawberries, 7,000 litres of cream, 60,000 pints of Pimms and 14,000 bottles of Champagne are consumed by spectators during Wimbledon. It is the only tennis competition where players are required to wear all or predominantly white clothing. The British dominated The Championships, as they are known, for the first 30 years: Ernest and William Renshaw, and Laurie and Reggie Doherty were national heroes. But our winning streak didn’t last. Until recently the last British man to win at Wimbledon was Fred Perry in 1936. He won a hat trick of titles just before the Second World War. The last British woman to win Wimbledon was Virginia Wade in the silver Jubilee year, 1977. Then, in the glorious summer of 2013 Andy Murray finally brought the title home to Britain and won the heart of the nation. He’s on a high this year having married his fiancé Kim Sears in the spring. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he made this a real fairytale year and won Wimbledon again? Wimbledon fortnight starts on 29th June.

Health Matters
Taking Notes by Emmy Butcher
I
AM ALWAYS SURPRISED when I hear people say that they don’t use a computer or have a mobile phone. Being someone who spends most of my day staring at a computer screen, shops online and is attached 24/7 to my mobile I can’t imagine a world without digital input. Well, I say I can’t imagine it but of course I can and in some ways it seems idyllic, but would it really be a pleasant experience? I suspect I’d always be worried about missing something. Of course one way to find out would be to turn it all off and go cold turkey for a couple of days and perhaps I should have made good use of one of those lovely May Bank Holiday weekends to give it a try. I was too busy doing important things like downloading missed episodes of The Archers and stalking, I mean… (ahem) catching up with my friends on Facebook. Despite all of my reliance on technology to help me run my life, I still feel like a complete dinosaur compared to our younger staff members. How can they text so quickly? How can they text so quickly and walk at the same time? I have tried it – I bump into things. Technology is moving at such a pace, these youngsters are able to keep up even with their eyes closed. At least, technology in health seems to have moved at a pace I can just about keep up with. Practices still have paper patient records, referred to as Lloyd George Notes, but clinicians tend to use them only for reference now. Up to date patient notes are stored on the computer system which makes for a much improved ease of reference. All GP Practices in Calne and Chippenham 40

obtained upon application to your GP Surgery. If you have already been signed up for Systm Online and do not have access to some of these functions you can contact your GP Practice and they will tell you what their protocol is for providing access. In some circumstances they may need to see proof of ID or have a request in writing. In addition, if you are a parent or guardian of a child living at home you can request to have them added to your Systm Online so that you can book appointments and order medication on their behalf. Similarly, if you are being cared for by someone and feel that it would be appropriate for them to be able to use Systm Online to help you manage your care, this is something which your GP Practice can easily arrange. In addition, Systm Online has an App for use with your mobile phone. This means you can access it on the move which is handy if you need to order medication quickly or can no longer make an appointment and need to cancel it.
TPP Systm One has a super duper whizzy patient website as well, called Systm Online, which most patients use to book appointments, order repeat medication and check test results. However, from 1st April 2015 all GP Practices have been able to also provide patients with a summary of their medical record through Systm Online. This summary details such things as your allergies, recent health issues, medication and any long term conditions you may have. Systm Online is accessed via a user name and password which is
In the meantime - be warned – I am going to spend the next month practicing the skill of walking and texting at the same time, it is an ability I am desperate to master; it’s the ultimate multitasking surely? It should be safe enough….if I wear L Plates, goggles, high vis clothing, a safety helmet and employ someone to clear the way of all innocent pedestrians and bystanders en route. Dress to Impress by Nikki Seal, Real Paintbox Company
W
ITH the launch of our Vintage Homeware Collection at Courtyard Vintage Home, I wanted to give you some fresh ideas on arranging, displaying and dressing items and accessories within your home. Whether your style is minimalist, country, pure vintage or contemporary, the following rules can be applied and adapted when arranging items on your shelving, bookcases, dressers and mantels to increase the overall visual appeal of your possessions.
Play around with the triangular shapes – the triangle doesn’t HAVE to be symmetrical!
Increase height variation with stools, boxes or books
Adding florals into a display gives it life
Work on one shelf or space at a time and then work your way around your home, tweaking and re-arranging as you go, until your whole house is ‘dressed to impress’! Group objects together to make ‘one item’ then make your Triangular display. If you need more height variation, raise the Height of one of the ‘items’ by placing it on a stool, a box or a pile of hardback books.
Anchor the display with a tray, mat or runner
If you are dressing a larger space eg. a long shelf, a mantel, or a series of shelves / spaces, break the space up into thirds or sixths and create a series of individual triangular groupings. Use anchoring to ‘ground’ your display. By containing a group of items within a framework eg. A tray, a placemat, a runner, a piece of slate or a wooden board, the items will instantly be given more form and order. Top tip: If your books aren’t of similar colours, cover them with pretty paper! When creating a larger display of several groups, instead of linked items being in a row or column, visually link them with triangle shapes too.

Father’s Day
• Home Care
Sunday June 21st
F
ATHER’S DAY is celebrated worldwide in recognition of the contribution fathers make to the lives of their children. In the UK it takes place on the third Sunday in June. There are various stories about the origins of the day. Some believe it is associated with pagan sun worship as the sun is known as the father of the universe and the June solstice occurs around the same time as Father’s Day each year. Others claim that the tradition originated in the ruins of Babylon. It is said that a young boy called Elmesu carved a father’s day message on a card made out of clay around 4,000 years ago. The UK is believed to have followed on after the USA started celebrating the annual occasion. Again there are different versions, but most link the commencement of the modern Father’s Day with the campaign led by Sonara Smart Dodd. When she was 27, Sonara decided after listening to a Mother’s Day Sermon that there should be something similar for fathers. The local Spokane Ministerial Association and the Young Men’s Christian Association supported her and a local celebration took place in 1910. The popularity of the day spread across the USA and it became officially recognised by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916.

Microchipping Pets by Susan Brookes-Morris
F
ROM April 2016 it will be compulsory for a dog to be microchipped in the UK. But what is a microchip and what does it do?
Microchipping seeks to aid reuniting lost or stolen pets with their owners with their pets. It should be used in conjunction with the usual tag and collar. The computer microchip contains a unique identity number and is housed in a type of glass which is compatible with living tissue. The whole thing is about the size of a grain of rice. A special syringe and needle are used to implant the chip between your pet’s shoulder blades. The insertion isn’t painful and a check will be made using a handheld device immediately afterwards to ensure that the chip’s data is readable. The code and owners details are then stored on a national database. It is important to update your details on the database if you move. Many pets are suitable for microchipping including dogs, cats, rabbits and horses. Charities such as the Dogs Trust are so passionate about its importance that they offer it for free at their rehoming centres and run chipping roadshow events throughout the year. Vets and other organisations charge for microchipping, and costs will vary depending on the size of your pet and where you live. 50

OWN A 15’3 THOROUGHBRED, Mr Basil Brush, we live in Wiltshire and our main purpose is to be the happiest hackers that there are and generally enjoy our life together. However, the increase in traffic and sadly the attitude of some drivers is turning our riding into hacking horrors more often than we would like. Basil and I ride on country lanes, some of which are only wide enough for one car at a time. I ride out of rush hour, and avoid school run times to prevent being a nuisance to motorists as much as I can. I have no issue with local drivers, they are so polite and we often interact as we pass each other. The local farmers in their huge tractors and farm machinery always stop and often turn off the engine allowing us to ride by safely, for this I am very grateful. The issue remains with those who use the lanes as a short cut from one town to another, hoping to shave 5 minutes off their commute time; which of course is all that matters when the driver has somewhere to go. I have had cars speed by at over 40 mph and so closely I have had to squeeze my leg in to prevent the stirrup iron damaging the passing car. At what point did it become acceptable to drive so recklessly and not to experience any consequences? I am sure there would be outcry if I did damage to their car! I am fortunate Basil and I are experienced and know the area we ride, enabling us to duck into gateways and junctions when we hear a fast car approaching. Of course there are times this isn’t possible and we have to take and deep breath and hope we don’t get hit! I wear all the correct attire, a high visibility body warmer and an exercise sheet for Basil when it’s the poorer weather. You really can’t miss us – half a ton of fluorescent yellow is quite a sight to behold! I was feeling cantankerous and positively fed up after returning from yet another horror hack which we spent more time dodging low flying cars than actually enjoying ourselves. I headed off to the local print shop and had a rugby shirt made, ‘KILL YOUR SPEED NOT MY HORSE’ in a red warning circle with bold black letters, positioned in the middle of my back on a white shirt. Feeling enlightened I set off on my next hack, wearing my new shirt. I felt sure to receive some abuse of some description the usual ‘Get off the road!’ ‘You horsey women think you own the place!’ but, as the first driver approached they slowed, to my surprise my shirt worked! 52
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2015
Drivers approached slower from behind, with me waving and smiling as always and Basil and I had a thoroughly pleasant hack! Hooray! It really did work! My shirt proved as a reminder of the consequence, which is all that was needed. I’m not saying one rugby shirt has changed all drivers, but it has certainly made a few of them think!

Oh the joys of Motorhoming ! Why do men “imagine” they always know best when it comes to holiday destinations?
B
EING FORTUNATE enough to own a small camper van, it means we can pop off whenever and wherever we like, but not being such a great traveller, I don’t like to go too far afield, so having been introduced to a lovely, friendly little site next to the canal in Bath, I was quite happy to go there again – but no! Fred in his “infinite wisdom” had read about the hundred top camping sites in the UK, and decided on one that looked ultra posh – and didn’t accept kids (to which he seems to have developed an allergy apart from ours and their offspring!) I guess being knocked flying by over exuberant teens on skateboards, run into by tots on fairy cycles, and hit in the “wotsits” by a stray football can have that effect ! So, after two days of food shopping for both house and camper van, washing and packing, (making sure all the necessities like medicines, toothpaste and soap, detergent and loo rolls and anything else we could possibly need), with Fred full of enthusiasm and me already knackered, at lunchtime on Good Friday, off we went. We were meeting up with our son and wife and baby at the lovely canal side site I mentioned where they had decided to stay for just one night and it was a very enjoyable night. We strolled along the canal path taking time to admire the moored narrow boats, then had a meal in the pub. Next morning we had breakfast together in their motorhome, then they left for home while we decided to stay for another few days. We took the bus into Bath and had a lovely afternoon, and spent the evening watching tv.
54
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2015
Very relaxing. Not so the next Bank Holiday weekend! Fred had booked us into the snooty, ah-la-posh site. Now we don’t have a “sat-nav” (something that will soon be rectified!) So my dear husband planned our route out on his computer. The journey was supposed to take an hour and forty minutes. No one in the deepest innards of the PC knew about the road works, detours and winding back roads of Bath.
For five solid hours we drove up and down what seemed like every bloody back road in that city. Some malevolent spirit had “hidden” the A4, replacing it with every other A whatever possible. At one point we were three miles from Bristol Airport! Wherever we were meant to go left – Fred went right. If we were supposed to turn right – he went left! “What the hell did that sign say?” he bellowed at me as we shot past before my eyes had even seen the pole it was attached to. “I didn’t have time to read it darling.” I said calmly.
How I kept my temper I just don’t know. Round and round, up and down, back and forth we criss -crossed those roads. “I remember that bit!” Fred would shout triumphantly each third or fourth (or fifth) time we passed some farm or pub. “I know darling,” I would reply somewhat dryly, “I do too – but we’re still bloody lost!” Eventually we stopped so that I could ask a man out with his dog. “O it’s only about four miles down that road,” he pointed, so off we went again. About ten miles later, down the narrowest, twistiest lanes you could imagine in a nightmare – we found it! Signposted by a postcardsized sign tacked halfway up a telegraph pole fifty foot away from the hidden entrance, there it was. A cemetery with parked vans! In fact a graveyard would’ve had more life in it. It would certainly have had more atmosphere! Beautifully manicured squares of lawn, immaculate gravel drive, small odd bits of statuary and lots of carefully coppiced trees and shrubs in rows – and zip all else!
No shop, no café area, very few signs of life. Reception didn’t even sell a pint of milk or a loaf of bread. Not a damn thing. Colditz would’ve been cosier and certainly more welcoming. I hated it at first sight.
Honestly, I nearly did a Pope John Paul as we drove through the entrance – I felt like getting out and kissing the ground, but had to content myself with hanging out of the window bawling, “I’m home!”
After the journey to hell, my bum was numb, my hip and back had locked and hurt so much I couldn’t get out of my seat for over half an hour.
And home it certainly is. From now on, we shall have the same little pitch between the bushes under the trees, opposite the warm and welcoming reception area, where we went for a hot chocolate every morning and a good gossip. The Wi-Fi is free (it was £20 EACH at the “ burial plot”,) and we feel like part of the “family”. We’ve already booked a week for our 53rd wedding anniversary later this year and it won’t be the last time we go.
For twenty four hours, all I could do was sit by the window watching a Blackbird digging up worms. I was so bored I almost felt like crawling out of the van and giving it a hand! By day two I’d had enough. I called the marina canal side site and Fred went to tell the miserable woman in reception we were leaving the following morning. She made him pay for the full week, but it was worth it to get the hell outa the place. We got lost again when we left as we weren’t allowed to return the way we’d come in. Some damn silly rule the site had with the council the woman told Fred, but no matter as we saw a bus headed for Bath and we followed it.
We did hear a hilarious tale in the riverside pub though. It seems a couple decided to spend a couple of nights down in deepest Devon on a farm. The old farmer, doing things on the cheap, didn’t provide electricity, but there was a cold tap in the field, and two brick buildings. One a WC and the other a place to empty your toilet “cassett”.
Early in the morning, the man wanted the loo, and rather than use the one in his van, he set off across the field to the nearest brick building. He thought it a little strange there were only three sides and no door, but although the brick “shelf ” had no seat, there he sat, trousers round his ankles, happily reading his paper, when hikers and other campers began walking past, grinning at him and waving. Thinking how friendly they were, he smiled and waved back. Business of the day done, trousers back in place, he left the strange little “shed”, only to find a queue outside, all holding their cassettes, patiently waiting for him to vacate the place so they could empty them. The WC hut was about 50 feet away, behind the waste emptying hut he had merrily pooped in! Judging by the laughter, that is a tale that will be told for many a boozy night to come. Ahhhh! The joys of motorhoming, huh? …… Joanne Deacon @ 2015 ……

Motoring Mayhem
Fire! by Colin Viner
A
T WORK IF THERE’S ONE thing I hate more than most it’s a no show. A couple of weeks ago we had 4 services booked in and 3 of them failed to appear. No phone calls, no cancellation, just did not turn up. This sort of thing can be costly as job cards will have been written, parts ordered and mechanic’s time allocated which cannot be refilled with such short notice. I tried the home and mobile numbers of one customer and they went straight to answer phone so I left a reminder message. A while later I had an apologetic call to say he had forgotten and rebooked it for the following week (which he also forgot). I then tried the owner of the second car and again left reminder calls and a text but got no response to either. I then tried the third owner (a lady) and again left voice and text messages. After a while I then tried another number I had for this car and got the husband that had booked it, but he was away on a course so said he would phone his wife and find out what had happened. He phoned back a short while later to explain that the car had a petrol leak and that as soon as his wife (who is a mechanic) ha d fixed it she would be in. I asked if she needed any 56
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2015
help but was told no she would be OK. About half an hour later I had another call from a now distressed husband to tell me the car was on fire and the Fire Brigade called. I asked if he wanted me to go to their house with a fire extinguisher and he said, ‘yes’. I rushed out into the garage and grabbed the nearest CO2 extinguisher, threw it in the car and sped off down the road. I hadn’t got very far before I could see the plume of smoke emanating from the housing estate and my immediate thought was, ‘I need a seriously larger fire extinguisher’. Once I reached the owner’s street the Fire Brigade was already there and were putting out the fire. It was quite obvious that the small extinguisher I had brought would have been totally inadequate as the car was practically gutted. I walked down to the owner’s house to make sure that she was OK and she was fine. I also jokingly said, ‘I suppose you won’t now need the service’? She laughed and told me that when the car went up she had to rescue her baby from the rear of the car. The whole episode could most easily have become a tragedy.
Petrol is not to be trifled with. It is highly volatile and the merest spark in the presence of a leak can cause a fire or even explosion. I remember being at work early one day and I heard this ‘whoomph’ from the next door neighbour’s garden. I looked out of the window and a man was running away from a blazing bonfire trying to put out his smouldering hair. He had put petrol on the bonfire and then tossed in a lighted match; the petrol vapours exploded and enveloped him in a ball of flame. His face and hair were a bit singed but he soon recovered. Another time a lady customer came into the office to book in work on her Ford Zephyr the following week. As she was driving away I noticed fire dropping onto the floor from the engine compartment. Fortunately traffic stopped her from driving off our forecourt and I managed get her out of the car and put out the fire. As the fire had only just happened little damage was caused but if she had driven off I think the car would have burnt out. Over the years I have had to deal with several small fires at work caused by welding operations catching bits of trim alight but thankfully have had none for over 20 years.

A Good Read Sponsored by Devizes Books
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Mark Haddon
........................................... Wellington is dead. He was killed with a fork. That’s not quite so odd though. It was a garden fork. Discovering the body of his neighbour’s dog, 15 year old Christopher is determined to find out what happens so he decides to do some ‘detecting’. What he discovers will tell him so much more than just who killed Wellington. As a reader you see the world through Christopher’s eyes. A world where maths is in charge and helps to make sense of everything. A world where seeing five red cars in a row is a sign of a ‘super good day.’ Christopher has Asperger’s Syndrome: a form of high functioning autism. This means that he doesn’t see things the same as others do. Facial expressions are difficult to decode – his teacher gives him clues to help him – and metaphors are just confusing and don’t really help you to understand things because you have to spend so much time trying to work out what it means. This highly acclaimed novel is an insight into a world inhabited by many people, but alien to most of the population. Haddon also brings out the difficulties of raising a child with Asperger’s. His widowed father tries to be patient but struggles with the lack of emotion from his son. In many ways Christopher has a better way of coping with life as he can shut himself away in a world ruled by algebra, patterns, and prime numbers.
As the novel draws towards its rewarding ending you will feel reluctant to leave him as he takes the next steps through life, telling us, “I can do anything.” And like many people with Asperger’s, he just might.
Jack Stalwart: The deadly race to space: Russia Elizabeth Singer Hunt
........................................... Most nine year olds only have school to worry about. Jack’s life is a bit more complicated than that. He is a secret agent. It must run in the family as his older brother Max was also a secret agent: only he has now gone missing. Jack must travel around the world battling some of the most dangerous villains there are, in the hope that he will one day find Max. In this book (the ninth in the series) Jack must find the space project’s chief engineer who has gone missing on the eve of the launch of manned mission to Mars. With his spy gadgets, such as gripper gloves and a mind eraser, this appears to be straightforward, but Jack is in for a shock. The Jack Stalwart books are aimed at young readers aged 7+ and appear to be a natural draw for boys of this age. Hunt cleverly mixes fiction and non-fiction in this series. Each book is set in a different country and contains factual information as part of the story, plus ‘fact file’ pages in the book. This age is a tricky one when it comes to reading, especially for boys, and the fast-pace of the story, plus the non-fiction aspect is a definite plus. Reviews by Willow Coby

Gardening
Never too late! by Rachel Leverton
G
ARDENING IS AN ongoing affair and though timing is important, we often become overwhelmed by a sense of being ‘too late to plant’ by some arbitrary date. Often we bandy dates around as though they were written in stone. My granddad insisted all potatoes and spring beans had to be sown by Good Friday, and the gooseberry bush had to be in leaf before the runner beans were sown. But in fact each season is different and garden planting dates are more flexible than traditional wisdom would have us believe! The good news is that it’s not too late to plant a great garden, even in June and July. While it is true that fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers really need to be set out now, many other summer producers
will grow even more quickly from seeds planted in early summer, when the soil is already well warmed. You’ll be surprised how fast seeds will come up and explode with growth: cucumbers, beans and winter squashes, pumpkins, beets, carrots, chard and scallions, are all suitable for June planting. It’s a great time to start a crop of ‘cut and come again’ salad mix and mild mustards. You can also plant heat-and-sun-loving herbs like basil, marjoram, chives, oregano, thyme and sage. Just keep the seed beds well moistened. And even if you were superefficient and your early-planted beans, squash, chard, carrots and basil plants are growing well, June is a terrific time to start a second crop to have ready for a late summer harvest, when the first crops of these staples have finished up. I usually start seeds every month, finishing sowing summer-producing vegetables in late June. In July and August, I move on to seeds for autumn crops like spinach, radishes, kale, leeks, peas, broccoli, more mild mustards and some pak choi. June is not too late for flowers either. I’ve planted marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias and nasturtiums at this time of year. That way when the first annuals have burned out by late summer I have a lovely smaller flush of blooms to enjoy. If you really want to get ahead, June and July are also good times to start seeds for perennials and biennials to bloom next spring.Sow seeds in a protected seed bed, and then transplant seedlings in the autumn to overwinter. Next spring you’ll be rewarded handsomely with garden full of glorious colour.

The Big Picture
H
ave you heard the one about the three animals arguing about who should be the King of the jungle? The Hawk stated that as he was the fastest and had the best eyesight, he should rule the Kingdom. The Lion, reminded them of tradition, that it had always been a lion named as the King of the jungle. Then the Skunk came by and suggested that he should be considered as with only one waft of the tail, everyone went running. Suddenly the Bear ran up and ate all three: Hawk, Lion and Stinker. The message that Jesus came to proclaim, was a message about the big picture: the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom grows with every heart that turns towards Jesus. In the early days of the Church the Kingdom grew rapidly, as the Good news of Jesus spread across the known world. One account from Acts chapter 8 is a great example and helps us understand the values of God’s Kingdom. Philip the evangelist was a helper in the early church, not to be confused with the Philip that was a disciple of Jesus. In Acts 6, we see him appointed by the apostles as one of seven deacons. Possibly because of the persecution that led to Stephen’s martyrdom, Philip found himself in the non-Jewish communities in Samaria. Things were going well. Philip shared the Good news of Jesus, and many people were healed and baptized. Then, an angel told Philip to take a walk along the main Gaza to Jerusalem highway. Philip was part of a Bigger Picture. God had something in mind, but Philip didn’t know what. It’s not easy just doing what God calls you to do. Most of us would like to tell God what to do. “I’m ready to be a Christian Lord, but don’t send me there, or don’t make me serve in that way, or don’t let me have to speak to that person.” Woody Allen once said. “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Following Jesus is not about following on our own terms. It’s about joining in with God’s agenda. Who did Philip meet that day? He was a man of different ethnicity, from Ethiopia. He was a man of influence and high status, being the equivalent of the Chancellor of the Exchequer in and around northern Sudan. He was a Gentile, and a seeker after God, having just returned from Jerusalem. He was a man identified as a eunuch, probably physically disfigured without his permission as a child.
70
The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2015
Could God’s bigger picture have included anyone more diverse or challenging to the norms of the early Jewish church? The Good News of Jesus is for everyone. God’s picture is bigger than our picture. Philip, guided by the Holy Spirit, finds himself going up to the Ethiopian’s Chariot and hears Isaiah Ch 53 being read aloud. Philip asks, “Do you understand it?” “How can I, unless someone explains it to me”, comes the reply. The Ethiopian has a hat full of questions, and Philip has some answers. Philip didn’t deliver a profound theological paper on the identity of the Suffering Servant in Deutero-Isaiah, he just told the man about the big picture: Jesus lived, loved, bled, died and three days later, came alive. Seeing some water, the Ethiopian stopped the chariot and asked to be Baptized. He’s heard enough. The Kingdom of God has grown a bit bigger. As the Ethiopian comes up out of the water, Philip is literally spirited away and is next seen 30 miles away. But what of this new convert to Christianity? It says, he went on his way rejoicing. Isn’t that brilliant? The Good news hasn’t burdened this chap with a load of rules or chained him down with unrealistic expectations. He is filled with God’s Spirit and goes home rejoicing. That’s what the big picture is about. Joy, laughter and lives changed for the better. What is there not to like about that? St. Cyprian, a man living in the 3rd Century in a time of real persecution wrote this to a friend, “It is a bad world, Donatus, an incredibly bad world. But I have discovered in the midst of it a company of quiet and holy people who have learned a great secret. They have found a joy which is a thousand times better than any of the pleasures of our sinful life. They are despised and persecuted, but they care not: they are masters of their souls. They have overcome the world. These people, Donatus, are the Christians,—and I am one of them.” Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley @hotmail.co.uk) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.
