Canmore Multiplex Update The Canmore Multiplex is an exciting facility now under construction in Canmore. The Canmore Multiplex features an aquatics centre with an 8 lane pool, a lazy river, and water slides, a 7000 sq. ft. climbing centre, a library, a gallery for the Canmore Arts & Artisans Guild (CAAG) and multipurpose community spaces. Spectator viewing for the pool and the climbing centre is provided on the 2nd floor along with space for fitness classes to club meeting rooms. Located at 700 Railway Avenue, the Canmore Multiplex will function as a venue for large gatherings or competitions, a space for creating lasting relationships in the community, and a place for neighbours and friends to extend their daily interactions. The vision for the facility is “to be an inspiring gathering place that enriches the well-being, enjoyment and aspirations of the community.” The Multiplex is on time to open in fall of 2012. Watch the Rocky Mountain Outlook for details on community events and celebrations or check out www.canmore.ca and click on the link under the Multiplex webcam.

Touchstone - A Public Art Work by Peter Powning! This sculpture will sit on the Multiplex site. A key element of this project will be active community participation. The community will be asked to provide small historical artifacts – something that means “Canmore” and “Community” to them. In April of 2012 Touchstone Artist Peter Powning will be in Canmore collecting impressions from artifacts and items people bring to him for inclusion in the bronze relief component of the sculpture. Dates and times to be announced. For more information contact: Chris Bartolomie l Arts & Culture l Town of Canmore 403.678.8938 l cbartolomie@canmore.ca

Welcome Parents and Children!

[

Lil’ Bears Den Babysitting Room Care for children ages 6 months to 6 years is available from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m Monday to Friday, from September to June. This service is available for parents using the Canmore Recreation Centre facilities or programs. Drop-in fee: $5.00 (member) and $7.00 (non-member) per child with limited space available.

Please read the following list of suggestions to help keep life in our cozy little room rolling along smoothly…

[

We do not have a toilet facility in the room itself! Please take a moment with your child to visit the restroom before dropping off. Please ensure your little one is dropped off with a clean diaper.

Please keep snacks simple, making sure there are no nuts. Remind the babysitter of any known allergies. With the numerous age ranges (it will happen from time to time) children may share snacks out of sheer kindness or confusion without the babysitter’s consent. Names on www.canmore.ca bottles and food containers are a plus!

[

[

If your child is showing any signs of illness, please be considerate and refrain from visiting until healthy again.

[

[

[

The babysitter reserves the right to request the parent to return to the babysitting room if their child(ren) cannot be soothed or wooed with the best of effort.

[

We strongly request that the parent/guardian dropping off the child(ren) also be the person that picks up the child. If you are not the person picking up the child, please indicate this by printing the name of the person picking up the child beside your signature in the sign in/out book.

[

Parents are welcome to bring their child’s favorite object (blanket, stuffy, etc.) if this will make the child feel more comfortable.

Red Cross Swim Kids Youth 6 - 12 years

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

In this Canadian Red Cross Learn to Swim program, participants will be challenged in three areas: Swimming, Fitness Activities and Skills / Water Safety. (Red Cross recommends all children entering into the program be 6 years old on the first day.) 10 - level program for children age 6 years and up.

Swim Kids 7

Swim Kids 1

Swim Kids 8

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

Swim Kids 2 Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feetfirst surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Swim Kids 9

This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.

This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). Swim Kids 4

Swim Kids 10

This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Swim Kids 3

Swim Kids 5 This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

General Community Information Pets

Share the Space – Bylaw Services

The frequent movement of wildlife through the Town is something that makes our community unique. For the safety of both wild and domestic animals, all cats, dogs and other pets must be controlled at all times. This means that dogs must be on a leash at all times, except when in the three designated off- leash areas (Elk Run Boulevard, Highway 1A, Quarry Lake). Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds or other public parks indicated by a sign. The Town of Canmore requires that all dogs belonging to full-time residents be licensed.

Parking in Canmore can be a real challenge. Bylaw Services receives several complaints annually about vehicles that don’t move. Please remember that streets are public property and the primary use is for short term parking (less than 72 hours). If you are heading out of town on a trip or have a long term guest that doesn’t require their vehicle, make sure it is parked on private property to free up the parking on the street for others.

Trail Use To protect wildlife, some portions of the more than 200 kilometers of recreational trails in and around Canmore may be off-limits to humans during certain periods of the year. At times, a specific trail or area may be closed temporarily to allow a large predator to feed or travel through. People found in closed areas are subject to provincial fines. To check for trail closures and updates, visit www.wildsmart.ca

Canmore Pathways and Trails Refer to pages 56 and 57 to view the Canmore Pathways and Trails map. Large paper copies available at the Civic Centre Reception Area (902 - 7th Ave) or online at www.canmore.ca/maps

Wildlife Sightings or Encounters Any wildlife encounters involving aggressive or threatening animals should be reported. All sightings of predators such as bears, cougars and wolves on trails or in and around the Town should be reported to Kananaskis Country dispatch 403.591.7755. In an emergency, call 911.

Help Keep Bears Wild! After a long winter’s nap the bears that live around Canmore wake up and start looking for something to eat. The best food for them is found in the wild, not in your yard. If bears find food in Town, they come looking for more. This isn’t good for bears or for Canmore residents. Please remove any birdfeed between April 1 to October 31.

Lost and Found Can’t find your bike? Have a teenager who lost an iPod or cell phone? Missing your car keys? Call 403.678.4244 if you’ve lost something. Bylaw Services may just have what you’re missing!

Water Canmore is blessed with abundant fresh water which needs to be treated to ensure it is safe when it comes out of our taps. Water that goes down the drain is treated again before it is returned to the Bow River Watershed. We encourage all residents to use water saving devices such as low or dual flush toilets and low flow sink or shower fixtures. Please practice responsible water-saving techniques by minimizing lengthy showers and deep baths; wash only full loads of laundry; water the garden or lawn late at night or early in the morning, use a rain barrel. Rain barrels are for sale from the Town of Canmore. Contact 403.678.1580 for information.

A Canmore Walking Tour of Public Art This approximately one-hour walk provides just a small sampling of the sculptures, signs, murals, installations and functional artworks that dot the Canmore landscape. Check www.canmore.ca for complete listings, interesting facts and details or pick up a self-guided brochure at the Civic Centre front desk.

Q. Where do I go to set up gas and electricity accounts on my new property? A. The Town of Canmore does not endorse any particular provider. Albertans can choose their electricity provider and rate plan. You have the option to choose between your regulated rate provider (see chart below) and power retailers. There are different electricity products, with different rates, terms and services, and some will suit Albertans’ needs and budgets better than others. In Alberta you have choices for electricity in your home or office. Under competitive retail service, you can choose to purchase your electricity and natural gas from a variety of retailers. You and the retailer of your choice may enter into a contract for the type and length of energy service you want. Retailers may offer long-term stable rate plans, “green” energy purchase plans or bundled plans for both electricity and natural gas. The regulated distribution company for your area will then deliver your energy to you. See below for options. Q. Where can I find more information on all the gas and electricity providers in Alberta? A. Alberta’s Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) provides this information at www.ucahelps.gov.ab.ca/ or by calling 310.4UCA (310.4822) toll-free anywhere in Alberta.

The Town of Canmore is free of cosmetic pesticides in our operations. Pesticide applications for the purpose of Noxious Weed Control (as identified in the Provincial Weed Control Act) are the only exception. Canmore and The Natural Step What is sustainability? You hear the word thrown around all the time and it seems to be related to a number of different topics, from development in the oil sands to recycling in Canmore. Sustainability is meeting the needs of the present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. While the word “sustainability” is associated with a variety of topics, they are in fact, all part of the same story, much of which is about supply and demand. If we draw the current situation, it looks like a funnel. Natural resources are declining: pristine environments are decreasing, fossil fuel sources are being extracted, quality agricultural land is developed, and air quality is deteriorating. At the same time, there are increasing demands for natural existing resources: population is increasing, world water consumption is increasing, people are traveling more and further, and most people are able to purchase many more items than previous generations. Declining natural resources Increasing demand for natural resources

Imagine what will happen if these two trends converge. We need to look at the demands we make on nature and natural systems and ensure that people’s needs – both this generation and future ones – can still be met. Thinking about the long term means we have to consider how our actions affect not only ourselves but our children and grandchildren, our neighbours, our economy and our environment.

48 l Canmore Community Guide

What is The Natural Step (TNS)? The Natural Step is a scientific approach to sustainability. Based on scientific consensus, these are the four root causes of the ways in which we compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. These are the basic ways in which we are un-sustainable: 1. We dig stuff (like heavy metals and fossil fuels) out of the Earth and allow it to build up faster than nature can cope with it. 2. We create man-made compounds and chemicals (like pesticides and fire retardants in carpets) and allow them to build up faster than nature can cope with them. 3. We continuously damage natural systems by physical means (over-harvesting and paving wetlands). 4. We live in and create societies in which many people cannot meet their basic needs (affordable housing). To create a sustainable society, we need both a vision of where we want to go and a plan for getting there. The Town of Canmore adopted The Natural Step as a tool to help us work together toward sustainability.

Backcasting – Beginning with the Future in Mind As a community, we need to plan, make decisions, and take action for sustainability. Using The Natural Step as our framework, the first step is ”backcasting” or starting with the end in mind. Backcasting is a fancy term for something we are all familiar with. It simply refers to the process of deciding on something we want in the future and then figuring out what we have to do today to get there. We usually backcast whenever we think about some future possibility, whether it be a change in career, buying a house, or planning for retirement.

The Natural Step

Town of Canmore

Planning for Sustainability After backcasting and creating a vision for where we want to go, we need to make a plan to get there. The Natural Step ‘ABCD’ process outlined below is how the Town is working to plan for sustainability. A = Awareness – This involves creating a shared understanding of sustainability and a common sense of purpose. This includes a common understanding of what sustainability is and why our current system is not sustainable. B = Baseline Analysis – Once we understand what sustainability is, the next step is to look at where we are today. This involves completing a baseline assessment of impacts to see how different activities are supporting or running counter to sustainability principles. Through this process we identify critical sustainability issues and opportunities for change. C = Compelling Vision – As this stage we consider what a sustainable Canmore would look like. This results in a compelling sustainability vision featuring bold strategic goals that serve as a compass to guide all strategies and actions. D = Down to Action – This step involves charting out a plan to bridge the gap between where we are today and where we’d like to be as a sustainable community. Actions and ideas should be screened against three strategic questions: 1. Does the action move us in the right direction? 2. Is it a flexible platform? 3. Is it a good return on investment? Many excellent tools, concepts and metrics are available to help people understand sustainability, identify actions and evaluate impacts. For more information on the Town of Canmore’s sustainability efforts visit www.canmore.ca and click on Municipal Sustainability or go to www.thenaturalstep.org/canada.

It’s Construction Season! Spring, summer and fall can be a busy time for construction in Canmore. Major projects in the downtown core happen before July and after August to accommodate summer visitors and events. This can mean several projects have to happen during a short window of time. Despite our best efforts, weather and water levels can delay projects. Residents should expect traffic delays during construction season. It is a good idea to plan alternate routes/detours/other ways of getting around during these disruptions. We thank you for your patience.

Riverside Park located on the East bank of the Bow River. This park is more manicured and offers beautiful views of the river and of the majestic Three Sisters. The site is close to downtown and has easy accessibility. There is limited parking and no on-site washrooms. Due to the high demand, a permit and fee system is in place for such functions. This ensures that no other wedding or special event is booked in the park for the duration of the rental period (three hours including set up and take down). In some cases, two weddings may occur in the same park on the same day but never at the same time.
