What does Early Childhood Development include? Early childhood development refers to the development of the whole child. Key areas include: Social Competence Physical Health and Well Being Emotional Maturity Language and Thinking Skills Communication and General Knowledge For further information go to www.ecdmapping.alberta.ca

Welcome Parents and Children!

[

Lil’ Bears Den Babysitting Room Care for children ages 6 months to 6 years is available from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, from September to June (no babysitting services available during July and August). This service is available for parents using the Canmore Recreation Centre facilities or programs. Drop-in fee: $5.00 (member) and $7.00 (non-member) per child with limited space available.

Please read the following list of suggestions to help keep life in our cozy little room rolling along smoothly…

[

We do not have a toilet facility in the room itself! Please take a moment with your child to visit the restroom before dropping off. Please ensure your little one is dropped off with a clean diaper.

[

Please keep snacks simple, making sure there are no nuts. Remind the babysitter of any known allergies. With the numerous age ranges (it will happen from time to time) children may share snacks out of sheer kindness or confusion without the babysitter’s consent. Names on bottles and food containers are a plus!

[

If your child is showing any signs of illness, please be considerate and refrain from visiting until healthy again.

[

[

[

The babysitter reserves the right to request the parent to return to the babysitting room if their child(ren) cannot be soothed or wooed with the best of effort.

[

We strongly request that the parent/guardian dropping off the child(ren) also be the person that picks up the child. If you are not the person picking up the child, please indicate this by printing the name of the person picking up the child beside your signature in the sign in/out book.

[

Parents are welcome to bring their child’s favorite object (blanket, stuffy, etc.) if this will make the child feel more comfortable.

Canmore Community Guide l 43

General Community Information Pets The frequent movement of wildlife through the Town is something that makes our community unique. For the safety of both wild and domestic animals, all cats, dogs and other pets must be controlled at all times. This means that dogs must be on a leash at all times, except when in the three designated off- leash areas (Elk Run Boulevard, Highway 1A, Quarry Lake). Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds or other public parks indicated by a sign. The Town of Canmore requires that all dogs belonging to full-time residents be licensed.

A Canmore Walking Tour of Public Art This approximately one-hour walk provides just a small sampling of the sculptures, signs, murals, installations and functional artworks that dot the Canmore landscape. Check www.canmore.ca for complete listings, interesting facts and details or pick up a self-guided brochure at the Civic Centre front desk.

Trail Use To protect wildlife, some portions of the more than 200 kilometers of recreational trails in and around Canmore may be off-limits to humans during certain periods of the year. At times, a specific trail or area may be closed temporarily to allow a large predator to feed or travel through. People found in closed areas are subject to provincial fines. To check for trail closures and updates, visit www.wildsmart.ca.

Canmore Pathways and Trails Large paper copies available at the Civic Centre Reception Area (902 - 7th Ave) Online - www.canmore.ca/maps

Be Nice! Clear Snow and Ice Within 48 hours of a snow fall your sidewalk must be cleared of snow and ice down to the bare concrete. Fines for not clearing sidewalks start at $100.00 Did You Know: That there is a “Volunteer Snow Removal” program that is intended for people with a disability and for people 65 years and older who earn under a certain income threshold. Call Family Community Support Services at 403.678.7129 for more information. You may even want to consider being a volunteer with this program and help those individuals in your neighborhood who have difficulty clearing their snow by shoveling their sidewalk for them.

Lost & Found Can’t find your bike? Have a teenager who lost an iPod or cell phone? Missing your car keys? Call 403.678.4244 if you’ve lost something. Bylaw Services may have what you’re missing!

Wildlife Sightings or Encounters Any wildlife encounters involving aggressive or threatening animals should be reported. All sightings of predators such as bears, cougars and wolves on trails or in and around the Town should be reported to Kananaskis Country dispatch 403.591.7755. In an emergency, call 911.

Help Keep Bears Wild! After a long winter’s nap the bears that live around Canmore wake up and start looking for something to eat. The best food for them is found in the wild, not in your yard. If bears find food in Town, they come looking for more. This isn’t good for bears or for Canmore residents. Please remove any birdfeed between April 1 to October 31.

Share the Space Parking in Canmore can be a real challenge. Bylaw Services receives several complaints annually about vehicles that don’t move. Please remember that streets are public property and that primary use is for short term parking (less than 72 hours). If you are heading out of town on a trip or have a long term guest that doesn’t require their vehicle, make sure it is parked on private property to free up the parking on the street for others.

Water Canmore is blessed with abundant fresh water which needs to be treated to ensure it is safe when it comes out of our taps and treated again before it is returned to the Bow River Watershed. We encourage all residents to use water saving devices such as low or dual flush toilets and low flow sink or shower fixtures. Please practice responsible water-saving techniques by minimizing lengthy showers and deep baths; wash only full loads of laundry; water the garden or lawn late at night or early in the morning, use a rain barrel. Rain barrels are for sale from the Town of Canmore. Contact 403.678.1580.

Starting a Business in Canmore Thinking of doing business in Canmore? Please email or contact the Business Registry Coordinator at 403.678.1503 or email businessregistry@canmore.ca to obtain your licence. Everyone conducting business must have a valid licence to operate in Canmore. If you have questions regarding how to set-up your business visit the Government of Canada website www.canadabusiness.ca for a step by step checklist.

General Information Frequently Asked Questions Q. I have just bought a home in Canmore. What do I need to do to set up a tax and utilities account with the Town? A. When you take possession your lawyer will register your name(s) on title with Alberta Land Titles. Based on the information received from Alberta Land Titles we update the Town of Canmore tax roll and utility (water, sewer, garbage) account (if applicable) twice a month to reflect current ownership additions and/or changes. You may also want to consider enrolling in the Town of Canmore pre-authorized payment plans for taxes and utilities. Canmore Mountain Market The Canmore Mountain Market has been a summer tradition for over twenty years. The Market is located in the heart of downtown at the Canmore Civic Centre Plaza (902 - 7th Avenue). The market is on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. until October 4, 2012 (tentative). This is a weekly seasonal event designed for the entire family. Rain or shine, this 19 week market showcases a variety of locally and regionally produced items. The Market provides business opportunities for small entrepreneurs as well as drawing attention to businesses in the downtown core. The Civic Centre Plaza provides a stunning location for discovering Canmore; from breathtaking views to shopping to chance re-connections between old friends and opportunities to make new ones.

Q. Where do I go to set up gas and electricity accounts on my new property? A. The Town of Canmore does not endorse any particular provider. Albertans can choose their electricity provider and rate plan. You have the option to choose between your regulated rate provider (see chart below) and power retailers. There are different electricity products, with different rates, terms and services, and some will suit Albertans’ needs and budgets better than others. In Alberta you have choices for electricity in your home or office. Under competitive retail service, you can choose to purchase your electricity and natural gas from a variety of retailers. You and the retailer of your choice may enter into a contract for the type and length of energy service you want. Retailers may offer long-term stable rate plans, “green” energy purchase plans or bundled plans for both electricity and natural gas. The regulated distribution company for your area will then deliver your energy to you. See below for options. Q. Where can I find more information on all the gas and electricity providers in Alberta? A. Alberta’s Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) provides this information at www.ucahelps.gov.ab.ca/ or by calling 310.4UCA (310.4822) toll-free anywhere in Alberta.

Canmore and The Natural Step What is sustainability? You hear the word thrown around all the time and it seems to be related to a number of different topics, from development in the oil sands to recycling in Canmore. Sustainability is meeting the needs of the present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. While the word “sustainability” is associated with a variety of topics, they are in fact, all part of the same story, much of which is about supply and demand. If we draw the current situation, it looks like a funnel. Natural resources are declining: pristine environments are decreasing, fossil fuel sources are being extracted, quality agricultural land is developed, and air quality is deteriorating. At the same time, there are increasing demands for natural existing resources: population is increasing, world water consumption is increasing, people are traveling more and further, and most people are able to purchase many more items than previous generations. Declining natural resources Increasing demand for natural resources

Imagine what will happen if these two trends converge. We need to look at the demands we make on nature and natural systems and ensure that people’s needs – both this generation and future ones – can still be met. Thinking about the long term means we have to consider how our actions affect not only ourselves but our children and grandchildren, our neighbours, our economy and our environment.

48 l Canmore Community Guide

What is The Natural Step (TNS)? The Natural Step is a scientific approach to sustainability. Based on scientific consensus, these are the four root causes of the ways in which we compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. These are the basic ways in which we are un-sustainable: 1. We dig stuff (like heavy metals and fossil fuels) out of the Earth and allow it to build up faster than nature can cope with it. 2. We create man-made compounds and chemicals (like pesticides and fire retardants in carpets) and allow them to build up faster than nature can cope with them. 3. We continuously damage natural systems by physical means (over-harvesting and paving wetlands). 4. We live in and create societies in which many people cannot meet their basic needs (affordable housing). To create a sustainable society, we need both a vision of where we want to go and a plan for getting there. The Town of Canmore adopted The Natural Step as a tool to help us work together toward sustainability.

Backcasting – Beginning with the Future in Mind As a community, we need to plan, make decisions, and take action for sustainability. Using The Natural Step as our framework, the first step is ”backcasting” or starting with the end in mind. Backcasting is a fancy term for something we are all familiar with. It simply refers to the process of deciding on something we want in the future and then figuring out what we have to do today to get there. We usually backcast whenever we think about some future possibility, whether it be a change in career, buying a house, or planning for retirement.

The Natural Step

Town of Canmore

Planning for Sustainability After backcasting and creating a vision for where we want to go, we need to make a plan to get there. The Natural Step ‘ABCD’ process outlined below is how the Town is working to plan for sustainability. A = Awareness – This involves creating a shared understanding of sustainability and a common sense of purpose. This includes a common understanding of what sustainability is and why our current system is not sustainable. B = Baseline Analysis – Once we understand what sustainability is, the next step is to look at where we are today. This involves completing a baseline assessment of impacts to see how different activities are supporting or running counter to sustainability principles. Through this process we identify critical sustainability issues and opportunities for change. C = Compelling Vision – As this stage we consider what a sustainable Canmore would look like. This results in a compelling sustainability vision featuring bold strategic goals that serve as a compass to guide all strategies and actions. D = Down to Action – This step involves charting out a plan to bridge the gap between where we are today and where we’d like to be as a sustainable community. Actions and ideas should be screened against three strategic questions:

It’s Construction Season! Spring, summer and fall can be a busy time for construction in Canmore. Major projects in the downtown core happen before July and after August to accommodate summer visitors and events. This can mean several projects have to happen during a short window of time. Despite our best efforts, weather and water levels can delay projects.

1. Does the action move us in the right direction? 2. Is it a flexible platform? 3. Is it a good return on investment?

Residents should expect traffic delays during construction season. It is a good idea to plan alternate routes/detours/other ways of getting around during these disruptions. We thank you for your patience.

Many excellent tools, concepts and metrics are available to help people understand sustainability, identify actions and evaluate impacts. National Fire Prevention Week October 7 - 13, 2012 Canmore FIRE Department will be hosting a

Pancake Breakfast 31 Station at 1021 Railway Ave. Sunday, October 7 from 9 a.m. until 11a.m. We look forward to seeing you there! Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. Your ability to get out depends on advance warning from smoke alarms and advance planning – a home fire escape plan that everyone in your family is familiar with and has practiced. Stop by the Canmore Fire Hall during Fire Prevention Week or any time to get more information.

Winter Season Home Fire Safety Tips • Left unattended, cooking and especially frying in pots and pans can turn into a fire in your kitchen. Attend to what’s heating on the stove. If you are distracted, turn off the heat and remove pots and pans before doing anything else. • Heating appliances such as space heaters need at least one metre (three feet) of space around them. Avoid placing any combustibles within this space. • Electrical

and heating systems can fail and become fire hazards. Ensure they are regularly checked by a professional, especially prior to the winter season when fireplaces, heaters, appliances and other electrical equipment are in maximum use.

• Carbon

monoxide (commonly known as CO) is a colourless, odourless toxic gas. When inhaled, CO reduces blood’s capacity to carry oxygen, and in severe cases, CO poisoning may cause brain damage and death. CO levels can build up in enclosed spaces, and can come from sources such as idling vehicles in garages, and improperly used and maintained gas appliances inside the home. Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home.

• Smoking

while in bed, tired or under the influence of alcohol or medication is the most common cause of fires that kill. Many such fires start on upholstered furniture ignited by fallen smouldering cigarettes or butts. Avoid smoking if you’re not fully awake and alert. Check sofas and cushions after a party for smouldering butts that can start a deadly inferno while you sleep.

• Candle-related

fires increase during the winter months. Ensure candles are mounted firmly on metal or glass candleholders, or place them in non-combustible containers away from combustibles such as curtains, clothing and spray from aerosol cans.

• Matches and lighters in the hands of young children are a deadly combination. Supervise children at all times and keep matches and lighters out of their reach. • Most chimney fires happen in wood-burning fireplaces. Ensure chimneys are cleaned and professionally inspected regularly. Burn only small quantities of wood at a time. • Avoid loose-fitting clothing that can ignite when close to open flames or hot stove burners. • If a fire does break out, will your smoke alarms warn you? Test your smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly. • In the event of a fire, alert everyone in your household, get out quickly, and call 9-1-1 from a neighbour’s phone. • Albertans are reminded to ensure they have working smoke alarms and a well-rehearsed home fire escape plan in case a fire does break out in their home.

For further information on fire safety, please call the Alberta Emergency Management Agency at 780.427.8392. Dial 310.0000 for toll-free access or visit the website at: www.aema.alberta.ca.

If a space becomes available, you will be contacted immediately. If your plans have changed and you decline, then the next person on the list will be contacted.

Cancelled Classes If a class is cancelled due to insufficient registration, a Recreation Centre front desk agent will contact you by phone to notify you that the class has been cancelled. At that time, patrons have the choice of a full refund or to leave the credit on the account to use towards future programs or courses.

Cancellation Policy Once a course has begun, no refunds or credits will be given unless it’s for medical reasons and the request is accompanied by a medical note. Refund requests prior to one week of the course start date are fully refundable. There are no refunds, transfers, or credits if you cancel within one week of the course start date.
