Warm up with dynamic cardio, then challenge yourself with effective exercises designed to increase the strength and endurance of abdominal, back, and gluteal muscle groups. Improving your core functionality will add stability for the low back, improve posture, and enhance sports performance.
Circuit Training: This circuit training class primarily involves moving from
one station to another in set periods of time. Each interval varies from 1 - 3 minutes alternating between strength and cardio. Cardio work can include Step, Hi/Lo Aerobics, or Cardio Kick box; Strength work can include the use of free weights, bands, mat exercises, body weight exercise, and more.

Introduction to Climbing: Kids and Parents 4 - 10 years and parents This drop-in class introduces children ages 4-10 years and their parents to climbing on our indoor climbing wall. Please bring clean indoor footwear and we’ll provide the climbing harnesses for this session. Maximum group size is six children and their parents.

Yogalates: This is a user-friendly fitness style of yoga and pilates suitable
for all. The emphasis on pilates focuses on developing the deep stabilizing muscles of the torso and strengthening core abdominal and back muscles. The focus of yoga is to breathe, stretch and feel. The non-impact resistance eliminates stress on joints, realigns muscle imbalances and focuses on maintaining neutral pelvic and spinal alignment.

Red Cross Swim Kids In this Canadian Red Cross learn to swim program. Participants will be challenged in three areas: Swimming, Fitness Activities and Skills and Water Safety (Red Cross recommends all children entering into the program be 6 years old on the first day.)
Swim Kids 1 Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.
Swim Kids 2 Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.
Swim Kids 3 This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.
Swim Kids 4 This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.
Swim Kids 5 This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.
20 l Canmore Community Guide
This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.
Swim Kids 7 This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.
Swim Kids 8 This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feetfirst surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.
Swim Kids 9 This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.
Swim Kids 10 This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Celebrate CANADIAN ENVIRONMENT WEEK JUNE 1-7, 2014
There are different ways to take part. Getting involved is the first step towards preserving Canada’s and the Bow Valley’s environment. Here are some ideas and activities that you can do that will make a difference. Participate in an activity to celebrate Environment Week or host your own. Check out Environment Canada’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/environmentcan for an activity happening in your community. If there are no events listed for Canmore, why not organize your own and share on Facebook?
AT HOME • Have a trash free BBQ and
invite guests to bring their own dinnerware and utensils or use a Frisbee as a plate! • While it is tempting, try not to
open the door of your oven when it’s in use. This will reduce the oven temperature and waste energy. • Turn your thermostat down by
a couple of degrees. You may find you don’t even notice the difference. • To avoid harming local wildlife
with plastic bag litter, always keep a reusable shopping bag handy and remember to use it. • Make recycling happen with
Town of Canmore’s 4 simple steps: collect and sort your recyclables, walk to your neighbourhood recycling bin, activate your brain to sort recyclables into the appropriate slot, and then walk home!
AT WORK • Instead of using aluminum foil
or saran wrap for your lunch, use reusable containers. • Take public transit – try our
awesome ROAM bus service between Canmore and Banff. • Join the Commuter Challenge
www.commuterchallenge.ca • Turn off your computer when
you’re not using it – this will double its life and save energy. • Stop drinking bottled water and
bring your own mug for coffee or tea.

Dog Licence Information Five Great Reasons to Licence Your Dog 1. The dog tag number can be searched on the Town of Canmore webpage so if someone finds your dog they can notify you directly. 2. Your dog will receive a Free Ride Home*, thereby avoiding kennel and impound fees. 3. A portion of the Dog Licence fees go toward supporting the Bow Valley SPCA, a no kill, no cage, care and adoption centre located right here in Canmore. 4. Dog licensing fees pay for doggie waste bag stations and Veterinary fees for sick or injured abandoned, domestic animals. 5. Help us keep track of the dog population in Canmore. The more dogs licensed, the better chances we have of introducing more programs and pet friendly spaces. *Free Ride Home program applies to dogs that have a valid licence in the Town of Canmore and one occurrence is permitted per year. Certain circumstances shall void the return of an animal for free.
Where and When to Licence Your Dog? Licenses can be purchased at the Civic Centre 902 7th Avenue downtown Canmore. As soon as you move to Canmore or become an owner of a dog, you should have a Town of Canmore licence. Licenses expire on December 31.
How Much Does it Cost? 1 year licence: $55.00 l 3 year licence: $114.00

Sustainability
Accelerating Canmore Toward Sustainability
Total Solid Waste Landfilled vs Diverted
Population 30,000 25,000
What is sustainability? The word sustainability is used frequently and in many different contexts, from development in the oil sands to recycling in Canmore. But just what is sustainability and how is sustainability expressed in Canmore? In a nutshell, we’re sustainable when we meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. To create a sustainable society, we need both a vision of where we want to go and a plan for getting there. To do this, The Town of Canmore adopted a framework for sustainable development pioneered by The Natural Step as a tool to help us work toward sustainability. Grounded in solid scientific research, The Natural Step framework challenges us to consider whether our daily actions move us toward, or away from, sustainability. The Town of Canmore has used the framework for sustainable development to help define our vision for the community, both now and in the future. It is reflected in our key strategic documents – Mining the Future, Signposts to Sustainability, our Community Sustainability Plan, our Corporate Strategic Plan and our Environmental Sustainability Action Plan. Our Environmental Sustainability Action Plan defines goals (for both the corporation of the Town of Canmore and for the community) in five key program areas that collectively help Canmore move toward sustainability. The five key program areas include: •
20,000 15,000 10,000 5,000
2001 0.70
2002 0.80
2003 0.89

Total Population
Total Tonnes of Waste Landfilled
What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Take to heart the first R of the 3Rs – reduce the amount of waste you generate. • Take advantage of all of the Town of Canmore’s waste diversion opportunities and recycle at your neighbourhood recycling bin and at the Elk Run recycling depot. • Buy refillable or reusable containers – avoid single use containers.
Water management The long term community goal is to reduce per capita residential water consumption to 111 litres/person/day by 2035 (the average Canadian uses 343 litres of water/person/ day; the average Swede uses 200 litres/person/day). In 2012 the average Canmore resident consumed 121 litres of water per day.

Some of the highlights from each program area are: Resource conservation and waste management The long term community goal is to reduce the amount of residential solid waste landfilled to 0.30 tonnes/person/year by 2035 (the average Canadian landfills 0.79 tonnes/person/ year). In 2012, the average Canmore resident landfilled 0.46 tonnes of waste. Although we have not yet achieved our long term waste generation goal, we can celebrate a higher than average diversion rate for our community – 49%. As we move forward with Canmore’s Beyond Curbside recycling program, our diversion rate should climb even higher.

What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Get an energy audit done on your home – and act on the results. • Install a programmable thermostat. • Walk, cycle or car pool.
Toxin reduction There are several goals for the community related to toxin reduction scheduled for completion by 2015: • 50% of residents voluntarily report that they do not use chemical herbicides to maintain their properties. • Retailers and commercial applicators provide annual data on herbicide sales or applications. • Collect baseline data on residential herbicide sales and commercial herbicide applications. • Establish herbicide reduction goal. The Environmental Sustainability Action Plan also defines the development a community education and engagement strategy to increase the community’s commitment to and participation in efforts to minimize the use of herbicides and other potentially toxic substances. To this end, the Town of Canmore Parks department delivers education and engagement programs to Canmore residents: • Build a barrel program • Wildflower presentations • Invasive plant information booth at the Mountain Market • Weed pull for cash • Participation in the Communities in Bloom program • Grade 4 and 7 invasive species education program
Learn about alternatives to household cleaning items that do not use hazardous chemicals. The Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley has some great suggestions. www.bioshphereinstitute.org •
Be responsible when disposing of your toxic waste – participate in the Town of Canmore’s toxic waste roundups in the spring and fall.
Community education and engagement There are three goals in the Community education and engagement section of the Environmental Sustainability Action Plan. The first is to develop formal community education and engagement programs and initiatives that support the attainment of the sustainability goals outlined in each of the other sections of the Plan. The second is to achieve awareness and active participation of the majority of the residential population in activities or initiatives that move the community towards sustainability. The third is to achieve awareness and active participation of the majority of local businesses and organizations in activities or initiatives that move the community towards sustainability. What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Let us know your thoughts on our sustainability programs – what we’re doing well and what you’d like to see us doing! •
Participate in sustainability programs offered by the Town of Canmore and the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley. In addition to our commitment to environmental sustainability, The Town of Canmore is also concerned with economic and social sustainability as well. Efforts such as diversifying the local economy, creating a tourism strategy for Canmore and supporting a range of low impact non-polluting light industry, which builds on the natural assets of the community and will move us toward economic sustainability. We are working on ensuring affordable housing, creating opportunities for residents of all ages to communicate and interact together and continuing to participate in programs such as the Fair Trade Town program to demonstrate our commitment to social sustainability. Many excellent tools, concepts and metrics are available to help people understand sustainability, identify actions and evaluate impacts. Community Recycling
Community Beyond Recycling Information
Curbside...
Together you and the Town of Canmore can make recycling happen with these 4 simple steps: Step 1: Collect and sort your recyclable material. 3 streams: mixed paper (includes all paper and cardboard), glass, plastic and metal). Step 2: Open your door, walk to your closest neighbourhood recycling bin. (Hint… they are blue and there is one in your neighbourhood!) Step 3: Activate your brain to determine which of the three slots you put your recycling in. Step 4: Walk home. Recycling is easy in Canmore (Really Easy)! Look for the new BLUE recycling bin in your neighbourhood. www.canmore.ca/Recycling-Beyond-Curbside/ Why should you recycle? Because if you throw something away, it is no longer useful, it ends up in landfill and the resources, energy and effort to create them are wasted. If you recycle something, it can be recovered and become material for a new product. Plus, it benefits business and industry. The cost of recovering raw materials from existing waste items is less than the original manufacturing process cost.
78 l Canmore Community Guide
Canmore’s goal is to recycle 70% of our residential waste. The new neighbourhood recycling program requires households to separate recyclables into 3 easy categories: Mixed paper Plastic and Metal Glass Refundable Beverage Containers will still go to the Bottle Depot. Fire Bylaw Information Back Yard Fires All Fires Must Be: In a fire pit or receptacle constructed of non-combustible material In a fire pit built into the bare ground or set upon non-combustible material • Not within 2 metres from any building or combustible material • Kept to a reasonable size (under 1 metre both height and width) • Fully supervised at all times by at least one person 14 years of age and older • May be started at 10:00 a.m. and fully extinguished by 1:00 a.m. You must have a means to extinguish the fire on hand at all times. The fire must be extinguished completely, so that the ashes are cold prior to leaving the fire. • •
You cannot burn:
Tips for fire pit use:
• Treated or painted lumber
•
• Lumber products containing glue or resins • Wet wood • Leaves, brush or yard waste • Garbage • Rubber, tires or plastic
Only clean, dry firewood is permitted to be burned in fire pits • High wind speeds may pose a fire hazard • Placing a metal grill/screen on top of the fire pit reduces the flame’s size and helps prevent sparks and embers from escaping
Fines for violations of these regulations range between $250 and $2,000. That’s a lot of wieners and smores!
Other Information You Should Know Fireworks: Fireworks are not allowed in Canmore, except at special events such as New Years, etc. and then only when set off by a licensed pyro technician. It’s also illegal to sell fireworks in Canmore, so don’t bother going shopping for them. And those fireworks you bought from that roadside stand? Don’t let them off here. You would be putting your friends and neighbors at risk, and it’s just not worth the $250 fine. To report illegal use of fireworks, phone 403.678.5516, 24 hours a day. You will be connected to the RCMP. Alternatively, during the day you can call Canmore Bylaw Services at 403.678.4244.
Fire Ban: The Fire Chief has the authority to declare a complete ban on all burning within the Town. Members of the Town of Canmore Fire Department, RCMP or a Peace Officer may ask you to extinguish your fire when a fire ban is in effect. They may also ask you to extinguish your fire if you are not complying with the regulations listed above.
The fine for having a fire when there is a fire ban is $2,000. Gas BBQ’s are always permitted, unless specifically stated in the fire ban (which isn’t often).
Illegal Back Yard Fires:
www.canmore.ca 80 l Canmore Community Guide
To report an illegal or hazardous fire, phone 911 and ask for Canmore Fire-Rescue. This is a routine response for them. Alternatively, during the day, you can call Canmore Bylaw Services at 403.678.4244.

82 l Canmore Community Guide
The frequent movement of wildlife through the Town is something that makes us unique. For the safety of both wild and domestic animals, all cats, dogs and other pets must be controlled at all times. This means that dogs must be on a leash at all times, except when in the three designated offleash areas (Elk Run Boulevard, Highway 1A, Quarry Lake). Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds or other public parks. The Town of Canmore requires that all dogs belonging to full-time residents be licensed.
Wildlife Sightings or Encounters Any wildlife encounters involving aggressive or threatening animals should be reported. All sightings of predators such as bears, cougars and wolves on trails or in and around the Town should be reported to Kananaskis Country dispatch 403.591.7755. In an emergency, call 911.
Help Keep Bears Wild! If bears find food in Town, they come looking for more. Please remove any birdfeed between April 1 to October 31.
Share the Space Parking in Canmore can be a real challenge. Bylaw Services receives several complaints annually about vehicles that don’t move. Please remember that streets are public property and that primary use is for short term parking (less than 72 hours). If you are heading out of town on a trip or have a long term guest that doesn’t require their vehicle, make sure it is parked on private property to free up the parking on the street for others.
Starting a Business in Canmore Thinking of doing business in Canmore? Please email or contact the Business Registry Coordinator at 403.678.1503 or email businessregistry@canmore.ca to obtain your licence. Everyone conducting business must have a valid licence to operate in Canmore. For more information visit the Government of Canada website www.canadabusiness.ca.
Frequently Asked Questions Q. I have just bought a home in Canmore. What do I need to do to set up a tax and utilities account with the Town? A. When you take possession your lawyer will register your name(s) on title with Alberta Land Titles. Based on the information received from Alberta Land Titles we update the Town of Canmore tax roll and utility (water, sewer, garbage) account (if applicable) twice a month to reflect current ownership additions and/or changes. You may also want to consider enrolling in the Town of Canmore pre-authorized payment plans for taxes and utilities. Visit www.canmore.ca/ Municipal-Services/Property-Tax/Payment-Options.html for details. Q. Where do I go to set up gas and electricity accounts on my new property? A. The Town of Canmore does not endorse any particular provider. Albertans can choose their electricity provider and rate plan. You have the option to choose between your regulated rate provider (see chart below) and power retailers. There are different electricity products, with different rates, terms and services, and some will suit Albertans’ needs and budgets better than others. In Alberta you have choices for electricity in your home or office. Under competitive retail service, you can choose to purchase your electricity and natural gas from a variety of retailers. You and the retailer of your choice may enter into a contract for the type and length of energy service you want. Retailers may offer long-term stable rate plans, “green” energy purchase plans or bundled plans for both electricity and natural gas. The regulated distribution company for your area will then deliver your energy to you. See below for options. Q. Where can I find more information on all the gas and electricity providers in Alberta? A. Alberta’s Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) provides this information at www.ucahelps.gov.ab.ca/ or by calling 310.4UCA (310.4822) toll-free anywhere in Alberta.

Canmore Outdoor Wedding Locations Quarry Lake
Riverside Park Riverside Park
Lady MacDonald Community Hall
Lady MacDonald Community Hall
Canmore offers spectacular mountain scenery for couples looking to have an outdoor wedding ceremony. Two ideal wedding locations include Quarry Lake Park and Riverside Park. Lady Macdonald Community Hall is the perfect spot for your indoor reception. Quarry Lake Park offers outstanding mountain views in a natural setting. Accessibility to the ceremony site is by pathway. The parking area is approximately 300 metres from the site. Riverside Park located on the East bank of the Bow River. This park is more manicured and offers beautiful views of the river and of the majestic Three Sisters. The site is close to downtown and has easy accessibility. There is limited parking. Due to the high demand for outdoor wedding ceremonies, a permit and fee system is in place for such functions. This ensures that no other wedding or special event is booked in the park for the duration of the rental period 3 hours including set up and take down. In some cases, two weddings may occur in the same park on the same day but never at the same time. The Lady MacDonald Community Hall at the Canmore Recreation Centre is available to rent for your wedding reception and provides a stunning view of the Three Sisters. The space can accommodate up to 120 people, with a buffet set up. The room has a bar facility (fridge, freezer, sink and ice machine), TV and integrated audio system. A perfect place to host your wedding reception!
Other general information: • Riverside Park can accommodate a wedding of up to 50 people. • Quarry Lake can accommodate a wedding of up to 150 people. • The parks are open to the general public. • Weddings can be booked up to one year in advance. • For both parks, gates will not be unlocked for wedding ceremonies. Arrangements for guests with mobility issues and onsite set-up and take-down need to be made accordingly. To make a booking via email or by phone, please include the following: • First and last names of the wedding couple • Cell phone, home phone and mailing address • Preferred date(s) and location • Estimated start and end time
(include set-up and take down time) • Estimated number of people attending • Time of ceremony
