Core Drop In Classes Fitness CORE Class Descriptions

Climbing CORE Class Descriptions

Bootcamp: Wake up soldier! Come join this high energy, easyto-follow, challenging and fun fitness workout! Develop cardio, strength, tone and balance in an ambiance of camaraderie. This class will include a short muscle conditioning and core work component.

Introduction to Climbing Movement Climbing is natural and intuitive, but after you learn a few new techniques in this class, you will have new places and steeper climbs to explore! We recommend that you bring or rent climbing shoes for this fundamentals class. Ages 13+

Core and More: Target and strengthen your abdominals and improve your overall core strength. This session emphasizes safe and effective exercises for abdominal and oblique muscles. Improving your core strength will enhance your range of motion and add support for your lower back while increasing the intensity of your training! Cross Training: This circuit training class primarily involves moving from one station to another in set periods of time. Each interval varies from 1 - 3 minutes alternating between strength and cardio. Cardio work can include Step, Hi/Lo Aerobics, or Cardio Kick box; Strength work can include the use of free weights, bands, mat exercises, body weight exercise, and more. Morning Flow Yoga: Start your mornings off right with this vitalizing style of yoga. The focus is on flow, flexibility, strength, balance, mindfulness and building a sense of community. The focus is to have fun and the time is NOW! Investing in your health is the best investment you can make. Sweat and Sculpt: Get rid of the mid-week blues with this fullbody conditioning workout. Challenge your cardio, develop stability and strengthen your core. Enhance your overall performance and build your endurance. Whatever your fitness level, this workout environment will inspire and keep you coming back for more!

Introduction to Climbing: Kids and Parents This drop-in class introduces children ages 4 - 10 years and their parents to climbing on our indoor climbing wall. Kids will have an opportunity to try bouldering and automatic belay system climbing and parents will learn about climbing opportunities and how to help their children play on the wall. Please bring clean indoor footwear and we’ll provide the climbing harnesses for this session. Maximum group size is six children and their parents. Conditioning for Climbing Although the best way to train for climbing is to climb, intermediate and above climbers can benefit from additional core, forearm and flexibility training. This 45 minute drop-in class will introduce some great training additions to your regular climbing plan. Ages 13+

Aquatics CORE Class Descriptions

Wild Card Workout: Break out of your routine with a different workout each week! This class keeps things fresh by introducing participants to a new instructor and class style every Saturday. Cardio, muscular endurance, strength, balance and core work are all fair game in this class! Challenge yourself by stepping into the unknown and have fun getting fit.

Aqua Fitness You don’t need to be a swimmer to enjoy these water-based fitness classes, which incorporate cardio, muscle conditioning and flexibility exercises. The water can be used to offer a variety of intensity levels that is right for you!

Yoga Flow: All levels are invited to join in this rhythmic yoga class. Modifications will be specified to suit your daily needs. The focus will be to flow enough to work out the stagnation from a day of work, as well as clear the mind and ease the body. A great class if you say you are too stiff to practice yoga.

Aqua Tabata This fitness class is based around high intensity training where an aqua-based exercise is done at a high intensity for 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds rest. Each set lasts a total of 4 minutes. Tabata training has been proven to be a very effective way of achieving weight loss.

Yogalates: This is a user-friendly fitness style of yoga and pilates suitable for all. The emphasis on pilates focuses on developing the deep stabilizing muscles of the torso and strengthening core abdominal and back muscles. The focus of yoga is to breathe, stretch and feel. The non-impact resistance eliminates stress on joints, realigns muscle imbalances and focuses on maintaining neutral pelvic and spinal alignment.

Aqua Yoga Immerse yourself in warmer water and try this yoga infused aqua class. The class is designed to flow from one sequence to another. Options will be provided to accommodate varied levels of ability.

Town of Canmore Refreshing Information About Bottled Water at Town of Canmore Facilities • Since 2009, with the support of the Federation of Canadian

Municipalities, the Town of Canmore phased out the sale and purchase of bottled water at our facilities where potable water is available.

• Instead of bottled water, we encourage the community to

drink our high quality municipal water, freely accessible in our facilities.

Why? • This decision is in line with the Town of Canmore’s municipal

commitment to sustainability, and supports our broader waste diversion goals, reduces litter, lowers waste disposal costs for the Town and provides an opportunity to promote our clean, safe municipal water supply.

• For most Canadians, excellent drinking water is as close as the

nearest fountain or faucet. Municipal drinking water is safe, reliable and affordable. This is certainly the case in Canmore.

We invite you back to the tap.

• Tap water is more sustainable than bottled water.

• The life cycle of a plastic water bottle creates significant amounts

of greenhouse gases, impacting the climate, and results in additional waste in landfills when they are not recycled.

We are pleased to offer our clean, safe, free municipal water in our municipal facilities.

• Water is a human right.

• Up to 40% of bottled water in Canada and the US is actually

sourced from municipal tap water.

• In the vast majority of Canadian cities, tap water undergoes far

more regular and strenuous testing than bottled water.

Red Cross Swim Kids In this Canadian Red Cross learn to swim program. Participants will be challenged in three areas: Swimming, Fitness Activities and Skills and Water Safety (Red Cross recommends all children entering into the program be 6 years old on the first day.)

Swim Kids 1 Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

Swim Kids 2 Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

Swim Kids 3 This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.

Swim Kids 4 This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Swim Kids 5 This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

38 l Canmore Community Guide

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

Swim Kids 7 This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

Swim Kids 8 This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feetfirst surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Swim Kids 9 This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

Swim Kids 10 This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Participation in Red Cross Swim may qualify you for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

Local autonomy is a cornerstone of the FCSS philosophy that allows local programs to develop services that meet unique needs of individual communities.

What are Preventive Social Programs? Preventive social programs are activities that use proactive, strength-based and intentional strategies to help individuals, families, and communities develop skills required to form a strong sense of self, resulting in the ability to build healthy relationships with others.

What Services Does FCSS Offer? As the needs of the community continue to change, FCSS services change to respond to those identified needs. A variety of services are offered in three main categories. Here is a sample of services provided. For a complete listing go to www.canmore.ca/Service-Areas/Community-Enrichment/ FCSS-Services.html

Canmore Community Watch Program The Canmore Policing Committee has initiated Canmore Community Watch. The program is a made in Canmore for Canmore approach to community involvement in crime prevention and crime solving.

anything is wrong. If you call the RCMP and it just turns out to be a couple waiting for a ride you will end up with that ‘cried wolf’ feeling. So you tell yourself that it is likely nothing and you carry on.

The program is based on one simple principle. Crime is prevented and/or solved by police when the police are notified by citizens when they observe activity that is out of the ordinary. Canmore Community Watch is a program that is designed to deliver the message to the public that the police strongly encourage the type of reporting that Canmore Community Watch promotes in our community.

The RCMP will tell you that your decision to do nothing is not the correct one. What you faced in your decision making is what the Canmore Community Watch program intends to overcome. Calling 911 is a big deal but it is the only number that comes to our minds. In fact, there is a number to call that is dedicated to this very situation. Canmore Community Watch 403.678.5516 is an RCMP, 24/7 phone line for non-emergency issues. Things like parking issues, lost and found pets and noise complaints are all relevant issues to call the Community Watch.

You may wonder why our community has undertaken a crime prevention and solving program when crime is not a very visible issue in town. Based on the simplicity of the program there is no reason not to have participation by all community members. In discussions with the RCMP at the Canmore Police Committee it was made clear that one of the best chances for police to solve or prevent a crime is to be notified by the public that something unusual is occurring. The difficulty that was identified was people are often reluctant to take the steps to notify police. The reasons become obvious once we start to imagine ourselves in a situation where we notice something out of the ordinary and what we are inclined to do about it. For example, imagine you see a couple of people at the back door of a main street business after hours. You are just passing by but it strikes you as odd. You are not inclined to call 911 because you don’t really know if

Visit the Canmore Policing Committee web page at www.canmore.ca for information on how to make the most useful observations for police to follow up, what to look for when we think something might be out of the ordinary, and how we can all do our best to look out for each other. Topics include: • Knowing your neighbours • Suspicious sounds and smells • How to observe useful information for the police • Suspicious actions of vehicles • Suspicious actions of people

Sustainability

Accelerating Canmore Toward Sustainability

Total Solid Waste Landfilled vs Diverted

Population 30,000 25,000

What is sustainability? The word sustainability is used frequently and in many different contexts, from development in the oil sands to recycling in Canmore. But just what is sustainability and how is sustainability expressed in Canmore? In a nutshell, we’re sustainable when we meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. To create a sustainable society, we need both a vision of where we want to go and a plan for getting there. To do this, The Town of Canmore adopted a framework for sustainable development pioneered by The Natural Step as a tool to help us work toward sustainability. Grounded in solid scientific research, The Natural Step framework challenges us to consider whether our daily actions move us toward, or away from, sustainability. The Town of Canmore has used the framework for sustainable development to help define our vision for the community, both now and in the future. It is reflected in our key strategic documents – Mining the Future, Signposts to Sustainability, our Community Sustainability Plan, our Corporate Strategic Plan and our Environmental Sustainability Action Plan. Our Environmental Sustainability Action Plan defines goals (for both the corporation of the Town of Canmore and for the community) in five key program areas that collectively help Canmore move toward sustainability. The five key program areas include: •

Total Population

Total Tonnes of Waste Landfilled

What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Take to heart the first R of the 3Rs – reduce the amount of waste you generate. • Take advantage of all of the Town of Canmore’s waste diversion opportunities and recycle at your neighbourhood recycling bin and at the Elk Run recycling depot. • Buy refillable or reusable containers – avoid single use containers.

Water management The long term community goal is to reduce per capita residential water consumption to 111 litres/person/day by 2035 (the average Canadian uses 343 litres of water/person/ day; the average Swede uses 200 litres/person/day). In 2012 the average Canmore resident consumed 121 litres of water per day.

Resource conservation and waste management

Water management • Energy and climate protection • Toxin reduction • Community education and engagement

Water Consumed / Capita (Litres/Person/Day)

Some of the highlights from each program area are: Resource conservation and waste management The long term community goal is to reduce the amount of residential solid waste landfilled to 0.30 tonnes/person/year by 2035 (the average Canadian landfills 0.79 tonnes/person/ year). In 2012, the average Canmore resident landfilled 0.46 tonnes of waste. Although we have not yet achieved our long term waste generation goal, we can celebrate a higher than average diversion rate for our community – 49%. As we move forward with Canmore’s Beyond Curbside recycling program, our diversion rate should climb even higher.

Sustainability Grade 10 invasive species/drama program • “Not all flowers are friendly” education campaign • Development and distribution of Canmore specific wildflower seed mix.

Energy and climate protection The long term community goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 4.3 tonnes CO2e/person/year. In 2012, the average Canmore resident emitted 9.7 tonnes of CO2e/ person/year.

What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Get an energy audit done on your home – and act on the results. • Install a programmable thermostat. • Walk, cycle or car pool.

Toxin reduction There are several goals for the community related to toxin reduction scheduled for completion by 2015: • 50% of residents voluntarily report that they do not use chemical herbicides to maintain their properties. • Retailers and commercial applicators provide annual data on herbicide sales or applications. • Collect baseline data on residential herbicide sales and commercial herbicide applications. • Establish herbicide reduction goal. The Environmental Sustainability Action Plan also defines the development a community education and engagement strategy to increase the community’s commitment to and participation in efforts to minimize the use of herbicides and other potentially toxic substances. To this end, the Town of Canmore Parks department delivers education and engagement programs to Canmore residents: • Build a barrel program • Wildflower presentations • Invasive plant information booth at the Mountain Market • Weed pull for cash • Participation in the Communities in Bloom program • Grade 4 and 7 invasive species education program

Learn about alternatives to household cleaning items that do not use hazardous chemicals. The Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley has some great suggestions. www.bioshphereinstitute.org

Be responsible when disposing of your toxic waste – participate in the Town of Canmore’s toxic waste roundups in the spring and fall.

Community education and engagement There are three goals in the Community education and engagement section of the Environmental Sustainability Action Plan. The first is to develop formal community education and engagement programs and initiatives that support the attainment of the sustainability goals outlined in each of the other sections of the Plan. The second is to achieve awareness and active participation of the majority of the residential population in activities or initiatives that move the community towards sustainability. The third is to achieve awareness and active participation of the majority of local businesses and organizations in activities or initiatives that move the community towards sustainability. What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Let us know your thoughts on our sustainability programs – what we’re doing well and what you’d like to see us doing! •

Participate in sustainability programs offered by the Town of Canmore and the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley. In addition to our commitment to environmental sustainability, The Town of Canmore is also concerned with economic and social sustainability as well. Efforts such as diversifying the local economy, creating a tourism strategy for Canmore and supporting a range of low impact non-polluting light industry, which builds on the natural assets of the community and will move us toward economic sustainability. We are working on ensuring affordable housing, creating opportunities for residents of all ages to communicate and interact together and continuing to participate in programs such as the Fair Trade Town program to demonstrate our commitment to social sustainability. Many excellent tools, concepts and metrics are available to help people understand sustainability, identify actions and evaluate impacts. Community Recycling

Community Beyond Recycling Information

Curbside...

Recycling in Canmore just got a whole lot easier... The Town of Canmore is introducing a new neighbourhood blue bin system, designed to make your life and your recycling a whole lot easier. Why should you recycle? Because if you throw something away, it is no longer useful, it ends up in landfill and the resources, energy and effort to create them are wasted. If you recycle something, it can be recovered and become material for a new product. Plus, it benefits business and industry. The cost of recovering raw materials from existing waste items is less than the original manufacturing process cost. Canmore’s goal is to recycle 70% of our residential waste. The new neighbourhood recycling program requires households to separate recyclables into 3 easy categories: Mixed paper Plastic and Metal Glass Refundable Beverage Containers will still go to the Bottle Depot. Join your neighbours – recycling in Canmore is easy!

Community Information

Community Information A Canmore Walking Tour of Public Art This approximately one-hour walk provides just a small sampling of the sculptures, signs, murals, installations and functional artworks that dot the Canmore landscape. Check www.canmore.ca for complete listings, interesting facts, and details or pick up a self-guided brochure at the Civic Centre front desk.

Trail Use To protect wildlife, some portions of the more than 200 kilometers of recreational trails in and around Canmore may be off-limits to humans during certain periods of the year. At times, a specific trail or area may be closed temporarily to allow a large predator to feed or travel through. People found in closed areas are subject to provincial fines. To check for trail closures and updates, visit www.wildsmart.ca.

Be Nice! Clear Snow and Ice Within 48 hours of a snow fall your sidewalk must be cleared of snow and ice down to the bare concrete. Fines for not clearing sidewalks start at $100.

Canmore Pathways and Trails Large paper copies of our trail map are available at the Civic Centre front desk (902 - 7th Avenue). Online - www.canmore.ca/maps

Did You Know: There is a “Volunteer Snow Removal” program that is intended for people with a disability and for people 65 years and older who earn under a certain income threshold. Call Family Community Support Services at 403.678.7129 for more information. You may even want to consider being a volunteer with this program and help those individuals in your neighborhood who have difficulty clearing their snow by shoveling their sidewalk for them.

Wildlife Sightings or Encounters

Pets

Parking in Canmore can be a real challenge. Bylaw Services receives several complaints annually about vehicles that don’t move. Please remember that streets are public property and that primary use is for short term parking (less than 72 hours). If you are heading out of town on a trip or have a long term guest that doesn’t require their vehicle, make sure it is parked on private property to free up the parking on the street for others.

The frequent movement of wildlife through the Town is something that makes us unique. For the safety of both wild and domestic animals, all cats, dogs and other pets must be controlled at all times. This means that dogs must be on a leash at all times, except when in the three designated offleash areas (Elk Run Boulevard, Highway 1A, Quarry Lake). Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds or other public parks. The Town of Canmore requires that all dogs belonging to fulltime residents be licensed.

Lost and Found Can’t find your bike? Have a teenager who lost an iPod or cell phone? Missing your car keys? Call 403.678.4244 if you’ve lost something. Bylaw Services may have what you’re missing!

72 l Canmore Community Guide

Any wildlife encounters involving aggressive or threatening animals should be reported. All sightings of predators such as bears, cougars and wolves on trails or in and around the Town should be reported to Kananaskis Country dispatch 403.591.7755. In an emergency, call 911.

Frequently Asked Questions Q. I have just bought a home in Canmore. What do I need to do to set up a tax and utilities account with the Town? A. When you take possession your lawyer will register your name(s) on title with Alberta Land Titles. Based on the information received from Alberta Land Titles we update the Town of Canmore tax roll and utility (water, sewer, garbage) account (if applicable) twice a month to reflect current ownership additions and/or changes. You may also want to consider enrolling in the Town of Canmore pre-authorized payment plans for taxes and utilities. Visit www.canmore.ca/ Municipal-Services/Property-Tax/Payment-Options.html for details. Q. Where do I go to set up gas and electricity accounts on my new property? A. The Town of Canmore does not endorse any particular provider. Albertans can choose their electricity provider and rate plan. You have the option to choose between your regulated rate provider (see chart below) and power retailers. There are different electricity products, with different rates, terms and services, and some will suit Albertans’ needs and budgets better than others. In Alberta you have choices for electricity in your home or office. Under competitive retail service, you can choose to purchase your electricity and natural gas from a variety of retailers. You and the retailer of your choice may enter into a contract for the type and length of energy service you want. Retailers may offer long-term stable rate plans, “green” energy purchase plans or bundled plans for both electricity and natural gas. The regulated distribution company for your area will then deliver your energy to you. See below for options. Q. Where can I find more information on all the gas and electricity providers in Alberta? A. Alberta’s Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) provides this information at www.ucahelps.gov.ab.ca/ or by calling 310.4UCA (310.4822) toll-free anywhere in Alberta.
