The truly great climbers are more than just strong; it’s their balance, flexibility and tenacity that sets them apart. Climbing is a movement based sport and once you feel its unique rhythm it’s hard not to fall in love with it. Essential movement is a program for novice to intermediate climbers to connect with the fluidity of climbing. We cover proper footwork, body positioning, resting, sequence reading, and much more. So, if you’re interested in taking your climbing to the next level, sign up and move with confidence. We also have a progressive program for groups who come in on a regular basis. It’s not what they climb that matters, what matters most are the lessons they carry with them when they come down. Red Cross Swim Kids In this Canadian Red Cross learn to swim program. Participants will be challenged in three areas: Swimming, Fitness Activities and Skills and Water Safety (Red Cross recommends all children entering into the program be 6 years old on the first day.)

Swim Kids 1 Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

Swim Kids 2 Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

Swim Kids 7 This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

Swim Kids 8 This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feetfirst surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Swim Kids 3 This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.

Swim Kids 4 This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Swim Kids 5 This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

24 l Canmore Community Guide

Swim Kids 9 This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

Swim Kids 10 This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Participation in Red Cross Swim may qualify you for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

Bellyfit®

Chi Kung

Bellyfit® is the fusion fitness experience exclusively for women. Relieve stress and get the sweat flowing with cardio moves infused with the ancient and beautiful fundamentals of Belly Dance, Bollywood and African Dance. Sculpt and tone with Pilates inspired core work, relax with Yoga inspired stretch, and be inspired and energized by the mindful Mudra Meditation. The unique Bellyfit® Music compilations are ethnoinfused techno, tribal rhythms and relaxing ambient tracks. No dance experience necessary. Elevation Place Instructor: Deborah Foley

Like other soft energy practices such as Tai Chi, Chi Kung works with the body’s own electromagnetic energy or “chi” to restore and balance the systems already in place in your body. This then connects us with the universal flow of energy, or the “Tao” around us all. This class will draw from 7 Lotus Chi Kung, a unique style of Chi Kung that uses ancient traditional Chi Kung styles and theory and blends them with yoga, bio-energetic postures, meditation and other techniques to accelerate the process of healing and restoration of body and mind. This results in improved health, balance, focus and connection in your life. Chi Kung is suitable for all ages and backgrounds. Experience your inner and outer smile through this amazing practice! Students need to wear comfortable, loose clothing and bring a mat or rug to practice on, water and a notebook and pencil. Accelerating Canmore Toward Sustainability

Total Solid Waste Landfilled vs Diverted

Population 30,000 25,000 20,000

What is sustainability? The word sustainability is used frequently and in many different contexts, from development in the oil sands to recycling in Canmore. But just what is sustainability and how is sustainability expressed in Canmore? In a nutshell, we’re sustainable when we meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. To create a sustainable society, we need both a vision of where we want to go and a plan for getting there. To do this, The Town of Canmore adopted a framework for sustainable development pioneered by The Natural Step as a tool to help us work toward sustainability. Grounded in solid scientific research, The Natural Step framework challenges us to consider whether our daily actions move us toward, or away from, sustainability. The Town of Canmore has used the framework for sustainable development to help define our vision for the community, both now and in the future. It is reflected in our key strategic documents – Mining the Future, Signposts to Sustainability, our Corporate Strategic Plan, and our Environmental Sustainability Action Plan. The Environmental Sustainability Action Plan defines goals (for both the corporation of the Town of Canmore and for the community) in five key program areas that collectively help Canmore move toward sustainability. The five key program areas include: •

Total Tonnes of Waste Landfilled

What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Take to heart the first R of the 3Rs – reduce the amount of waste you generate. • Take advantage of all of the Town of Canmore’s waste diversion opportunities and recycle at your neighbourhood recycling bin and at the Elk Run recycling depot. • Buy refillable or reusable containers – avoid single use containers.

Water management The long term community goal is to reduce per capita residential water consumption to 111 litres/person/day by 2035 (the average Canadian uses 343 litres of water/person/ day; the average Swede uses 200 litres/person/day). In 2011 the average Canmore resident consumed 122 litres of water per day.

Resource conservation and waste management

Water conservation • Energy and climate protection • Toxin reduction • Community engagement Some of the highlights from each program area are: Resource conservation and waste management The long term community goal is to reduce the amount of residential solid waste landfilled to 0.30 tonnes/person/year by 2035 (the average Canadian landfills 0.79 tonnes/person/ year). In 2011, the average Canmore resident landfilled 0.45 tonnes of waste. And although we have not yet achieved our long term waste generation goal, we can celebrate a higher than average diversion rate for our community of 51%. And as we move forward with Canmore’s new Beyond Curbside (blue recycling bins in every neighbourhood) recycling program in 2012, our diversion rate should climb even higher.

What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Get an energy audit done on your home – and act on the results. • Install a programmable thermostat. • Walk, cycle or car pool.

Toxin reduction There are several goals for the community related to toxin reduction scheduled for completion by 2015: • 50 % of residents voluntarily report that they do not use chemical herbicides to maintain their properties. • Retailers and commercial applicators provide annual data on herbicide sales or applications. • Collect baseline data on residential herbicide sales and commercial herbicide applications. • Establish herbicide reduction goal. The Environmental Sustainability Action Plan also defines the development a community education and engagement strategy to increase the community’s commitment to and participation in efforts to minimize the use of herbicides and other potentially toxic substances. To this end, the Town of Canmore Parks department delivers education and engagement programs to Canmore residents: • Build a barrel program • Wildflower presentations • Invasive plant information booth at the Mountain Market • Weed pull for cash • Participation in the Communities in Bloom program • Grade 4 and 7 invasive species education program

Learn about alternatives to household cleaning items that do not use hazardous chemicals. The Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley has some great suggestions. •

Be responsible when disposing of your toxic waste – participate in the Town of Canmore’s toxic waste roundups in the spring and fall.

Community education and engagement There are three goals in the Community education and engagement section of the Environmental Sustainability Action Plan. The first is to develop formal community education and engagement programs and initiatives that support the attainment of the sustainability goals outlined in each of the other sections of the Plan. The second is to achieve awareness and active participation of the majority of the residential population in activities or initiatives that move the community towards sustainability. The third is to achieve awareness and active participation of the majority of local businesses and organizations in activities or initiatives that move the community towards sustainability. The Town of Canmore is developing plans to work on these goals in 2012 and 2013 and some community outreach and education during 2011. What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Let us know your thoughts on our sustainability programs – what we’re doing well and what you’d like to see us doing! •

Participate in sustainability programs offered by the Town of Canmore and the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley. In addition to our commitment to environmental sustainability, The Town of Canmore is also concerned with economic and social sustainability as well. Efforts such as diversifying the local economy, creating a tourism strategy for Canmore and supporting a range of low impact non-polluting light industry building on the natural assets of the community will move us toward economic sustainability. Ensuring affordable housing, creating opportunities for residents of all ages to communicate and interact together and continuing to participate in programs such as the Fair Trade Town program demonstrate our commitment to social sustainability. Many excellent tools, concepts and metrics are available to help people understand sustainability, identify actions and evaluate impacts. Community Recycling

Community Beyond Recycling Information

Curbside...

Recycling in Canmore just got a whole lot easier... The Town of Canmore is introducing a new neighbourhood blue bin system, designed to make your life and your recycling a whole lot easier. Why should you recycle? Because if you throw something away, it is no longer useful. It ends up in landfill and the resources, energy and effort to create them are wasted. If you recycle something, it can be recovered and become material for a new product. Plus, it benefits business and industry. The cost of recovering raw materials from existing waste items is less than the original manufacturing process cost. Canmore’s goal is to recycle 70% of our residential waste. The new neighbourhood recycling program requires households to separate recyclables into 3 easy categories: Mixed paper Plastic and Metal Glass Refundable Beverage Containers will still go to the Bottle Depot. Join your neighbours – recycling in Canmore is easy!

The frequent movement of wildlife through the Town is something that makes us unique. For the safety of both wild and domestic animals, all cats, dogs and other pets must be controlled at all times. This means that dogs must be on a leash at all times, except when in the three designated offleash areas (Elk Run Boulevard, Highway 1A, Quarry Lake). Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds or other public parks. The Town of Canmore requires that all dogs belonging to full-time residents be licensed.

Wildlife Sightings or Encounters Any wildlife encounters involving aggressive or threatening animals should be reported. All sightings of predators such as bears, cougars and wolves on trails or in and around the Town should be reported to Kananaskis Country dispatch 403.591.7755. In an emergency, call 911.

Share the Space Parking in Canmore can be a real challenge. Bylaw Services receives several complaints annually about vehicles that don’t move. Please remember that streets are public property and that primary use is for short term parking (less than 72 hours). If you are heading out of town on a trip or have a long term guest that doesn’t require their vehicle, make sure it is parked on private property to free up the parking on the street for others.

Frequently Asked Questions Q. I have just bought a home in Canmore. What do I need to do to set up a tax and utilities account with the Town? A. When you take possession your lawyer will register your name(s) on title with Alberta Land Titles. Based on the information received from Alberta Land Titles we update the Town of Canmore tax roll and utility (water, sewer, garbage) account (if applicable) twice a month to reflect current ownership additions and/or changes. You may also want to consider enrolling in the Town of Canmore pre-authorized payment plans for taxes and utilities. Visit www.canmore.ca/ Municipal-Services/Property-Tax/Payment-Options.html for details. Q. Where do I go to set up gas and electricity accounts on my new property? A. The Town of Canmore does not endorse any particular provider. Albertans can choose their electricity provider and rate plan. You have the option to choose between your regulated rate provider (see chart below) and power retailers. There are different electricity products, with different rates, terms and services, and some will suit Albertans’ needs and budgets better than others. In Alberta you have choices for electricity in your home or office. Under competitive retail service, you can choose to purchase your electricity and natural gas from a variety of retailers. You and the retailer of your choice may enter into a contract for the type and length of energy service you want. Retailers may offer long-term stable rate plans, “green” energy purchase plans or bundled plans for both electricity and natural gas. The regulated distribution company for your area will then deliver your energy to you. See below for options. Q. Where can I find more information on all the gas and electricity providers in Alberta? A. Alberta’s Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) provides this information at www.ucahelps.gov.ab.ca/ or by calling 310.4UCA (310.4822) toll-free anywhere in Alberta.
