Elevation Place Climbing Gym Introduction Indoor rock climbing is one of the fastest growing activities in North America and around the World. It’s even become a demonstration sport in the next Olympic Games. One of many reasons for this sudden boost in interest is because in essence, climbing is a “choose your own adventure” adventure. Progress at your own speed, learn at your own pace, and climb only as high as you feel comfortable. At Elevation Place Climbing Center, we guarantee that you will always have a choice, a view, and something to strive for.

Climbing Wall Descriptions Space Explore over 11,000 square feet of climbing wall surface area. With a variety of different angles and heights, Elevation Place will accommodate an exhilarating climbing experience for everyone – from first timers, to elite athletes, from toddlers to mature adults. It’s truly a space that’s both challenging and fun for the whole family. Boulders Never far off the ground, Bouldering is one of the most popular aspects of Indoor Rock Climbing. No ropes, no harness, no partners required, just come in and climb until you get enough. However, with our dedicated area and world class route setting, getting ‘enough’ might be a challenge in itself. Choice With over twenty five permanently installed ropes you will have more than 75 different routes to choose from at any particular time. Depending on your skill set, comfort level and certification, every climb can either be led or top roped. So no matter what style you prefer there’s guaranteed to be plenty of choices. Only have one hour? No problem, In addition to our fixed ropes, Elevation Place is equipped with 3 automatic belay systems, so you can easily climb without a partner for as long as you’d like. Your experience is entirely up to you. With the Perfect Descent auto belays, big fun comes in a small package.

Elevation Place Climbing Gym Climbing Wall Descriptions How High? Elevation Place climbing center hosts roped climbing walls from 25 feet up to 45 feet tall. This variety ensures that everybody feels the thrill and excitement of indoor climbing in a safe and comfortable environment. Whether you’re a beginner or a world class competitor, the height of our walls will continue to challenge and inspire. Speed If you have the need for speed, we’ve got you covered. Don’t hesitate to try our cutting edge speed climbing walls. With a buzzer mounted and waiting on top and two identical courses, you can challenge anyone to a friendly match of vertical measures. Great for family fun, birthday parties, sibling rivalry’s and first dates. Speedometer not included. Design Walltopia and the Town of Canmore have united to create a full range of features to captivate our imaginations. The second you enter the gym you are greeted warmly by the magnificent prow wall, which looks more like the bow of a giant ship than a rock face, and its unique quality allows for sensational movement when scaling its sides. Located behind this is our custom built Moose Hole. This distinct arch provides ease of passage from one room to the other, added light and airflow. Not to mention an extra challenge when trying to overcome its playful defiance. Rocktopia If you’re looking for a real rock like experience, be sure to check out our Rocktopia wall. Located beside our giant bay windows overlooking the Three Sisters mountain range, this wall has a rugged look and superior texture to create an outdoor climbing familiarity. This concept works wonders for children’s imaginations and for simulating real rock for outdoor training programs. It’s so real you’ll think it’s summer all winter long.

Check out our programs for kids and parents to gather, play, climb and swing. Tuesdays l 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.

Birthday Parties l 5 Years and Up Don’t want them climbing your walls at home? Let them climb our walls instead. We offer a full birthday party package where kids can scramble until their hearts content. Our highly trained staff take care of everything including harnesses and belaying. So just sit back and watch them soar. They might even be too tired to open presents and eat cake, but it’s not likely. Saturdays and Sundays 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Junior Rec l 6 - 8, 9 - 11 and 12 - 15 Years The Junior Recreation program is designed for those kids with a sense of playful adventure. Monday to Friday l 4:00 - 6:30 p.m.

Learn to Climb l 13 Years and Up If you’ve never climbed before, but you’re ready to learn, this popular and accessible program is just for you. Low Gravity l 50 Years+ For older adults looking to round out their activities, look no further than the Climbing Center at Elevation Place. With permanently set up top ropes and high quality route setting, there’s absolutely zero impact on the body, in fact, it’s more like a vertical dance than anything else, and who doesn’t like to dance? Of course, it builds muscle tone and sharpens the mind as well, but those are just the perks. Don’t knock it ‘til you try it. Tuesdays and Thursdays l 9:00 - 10:30 a.m.

Comparative Religion Interested in gaining a basic understanding of world religions? Each week we will examine the rituals, doctrines, and institutions of one religion. We will cover Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism. There will be unstructured classroom discussion time to allow for a better understanding of the origins and principles of each faith and the influence of religion in current world events. Participants will also gain insight into their own belief systems deepening their personal understanding of spirituality. Religions offer stories or mythologies that help individuals and society cope and thrive within the challenging conditions in which they live. As we head into a critical time of environmental degradation, materialism, and social alienation, the stories on which our belief systems are based will enable us to create new mythologies by which we live. Studying religions helps us better understand what basic tenets of humanity need to change for us to succeed.

Swim Kids 6

Red Cross Swim Kids Youth 6 - 12 years

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

In this Canadian Red Cross Learn to Swim program, participants will be challenged in three areas: Swimming, Fitness Activities and Skills / Water Safety. (Red Cross recommends all children entering into the program be 6 years old on the first day.) 10 - level program for children age 6 years and up.

Swim Kids 8

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

This level is an introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feetfirst surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Swim Kids 2 Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

Swim Kids 3 This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.

Swim Kids 4 This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Swim Kids 5 This level introduces the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

36 l Canmore Community Guide

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

Swim Kids 9 This level refines the front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

Swim Kids 10 This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). What does Early Childhood Development include? Early childhood development refers to the development of the whole child. Key areas include: Social Competence Physical Health and Well Being Emotional Maturity Language and Thinking Skills Communication and General Knowledge For further information go to www.ecdmapping.alberta.ca

Sustainability

Accelerating Canmore Toward Sustainability

Total Solid Waste Landfilled vs Diverted

Population 30,000 25,000 20,000

What is sustainability? The word sustainability is used frequently and in many different contexts, from development in the oil sands to recycling in Canmore. But just what is sustainability and how is sustainability expressed in Canmore? In a nutshell, we’re sustainable when we meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. To create a sustainable society, we need both a vision of where we want to go and a plan for getting there. To do this, The Town of Canmore adopted a framework for sustainable development pioneered by The Natural Step as a tool to help us work toward sustainability. Grounded in solid scientific research, The Natural Step framework challenges us to consider whether our daily actions move us toward, or away from, sustainability. The Town of Canmore has used the framework for sustainable development to help define our vision for the community, both now and in the future. It is reflected in our key strategic documents – Mining the Future, Signposts to Sustainability, our Corporate Strategic Plan, and our Environmental Sustainability Action Plan. The Environmental Sustainability Action Plan defines goals (for both the corporation of the Town of Canmore and for the community) in five key program areas that collectively help Canmore move toward sustainability. The five key program areas include: •

Total Population

Total Tonnes of Waste Landfilled

What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Take to heart the first R of the 3Rs – reduce the amount of waste you generate. • Take advantage of all of the Town of Canmore’s waste diversion opportunities and recycle at your neighbourhood recycling bin and at the Elk Run recycling depot. • Buy refillable or reusable containers – avoid single use containers.

Water management The long term community goal is to reduce per capita residential water consumption to 111 litres/person/day by 2035 (the average Canadian uses 343 litres of water/person/ day; the average Swede uses 200 litres/person/day). In 2011 the average Canmore resident consumed 122 litres of water per day.

Resource conservation and waste management

Water conservation • Energy and climate protection • Toxin reduction • Community engagement Some of the highlights from each program area are: Resource conservation and waste management The long term community goal is to reduce the amount of residential solid waste landfilled to 0.30 tonnes/person/year by 2035 (the average Canadian landfills 0.79 tonnes/person/ year). In 2011, the average Canmore resident landfilled 0.45 tonnes of waste. And although we have not yet achieved our long term waste generation goal, we can celebrate a higher than average diversion rate for our community of 51%. And as we move forward with Canmore’s new Beyond Curbside (blue recycling bins in every neighbourhood) recycling program in 2012, our diversion rate should climb even higher.

What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Get an energy audit done on your home – and act on the results. • Install a programmable thermostat. • Walk, cycle or car pool.

Toxin reduction There are several goals for the community related to toxin reduction scheduled for completion by 2015: • 50 % of residents voluntarily report that they do not use chemical herbicides to maintain their properties. • Retailers and commercial applicators provide annual data on herbicide sales or applications. • Collect baseline data on residential herbicide sales and commercial herbicide applications. • Establish herbicide reduction goal. The Environmental Sustainability Action Plan also defines the development a community education and engagement strategy to increase the community’s commitment to and participation in efforts to minimize the use of herbicides and other potentially toxic substances. To this end, the Town of Canmore Parks department delivers education and engagement programs to Canmore residents: • Build a barrel program • Wildflower presentations • Invasive plant information booth at the Mountain Market • Weed pull for cash • Participation in the Communities in Bloom program • Grade 4 and 7 invasive species education program

Learn about alternatives to household cleaning items that do not use hazardous chemicals. The Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley has some great suggestions.

Be responsible when disposing of your toxic waste – participate in the Town of Canmore’s toxic waste roundups in the spring and fall.

Community education and engagement There are three goals in the Community education and engagement section of the Environmental Sustainability Action Plan. The first is to develop formal community education and engagement programs and initiatives that support the attainment of the sustainability goals outlined in each of the other sections of the Plan. The second is to achieve awareness and active participation of the majority of the residential population in activities or initiatives that move the community towards sustainability. The third is to achieve awareness and active participation of the majority of local businesses and organizations in activities or initiatives that move the community towards sustainability. The Town of Canmore is developing plans to work on these goals in 2012 and 2013 and some community outreach and education during 2011. What you can do to help us achieve our goal: • Let us know your thoughts on our sustainability programs – what we’re doing well and what you’d like to see us doing! •

Participate in sustainability programs offered by the Town of Canmore and the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley. In addition to our commitment to environmental sustainability, The Town of Canmore is also concerned with economic and social sustainability as well. Efforts such as diversifying the local economy, creating a tourism strategy for Canmore and supporting a range of low impact non-polluting light industry building on the natural assets of the community will move us toward economic sustainability. Ensuring affordable housing, creating opportunities for residents of all ages to communicate and interact together and continuing to participate in programs such as the Fair Trade Town program demonstrate our commitment to social sustainability. Many excellent tools, concepts and metrics are available to help people understand sustainability, identify actions and evaluate impacts. Community Information

General Community Information A Canmore Walking Tour of Public Art This approximately one-hour walk provides just a small sampling of the sculptures, signs, murals, installations and functional artworks that dot the Canmore landscape. Check www.canmore.ca for complete listings, interesting facts, and details or pick up a self-guided brochure at the Civic Centre front desk.

Trail Use To protect wildlife, some portions of the more than 200 kilometers of recreational trails in and around Canmore may be off-limits to humans during certain periods of the year. At times, a specific trail or area may be closed temporarily to allow a large predator to feed or travel through. People found in closed areas are subject to provincial fines. To check for trail closures and updates, visit www.wildsmart.ca.

Be Nice! Clear Snow and Ice Within 48 hours of a snow fall your sidewalk must be cleared of snow and ice down to the bare concrete. Fines for not clearing sidewalks start at $100. Did You Know: That there is a “Volunteer Snow Removal” program that is intended for people with a disability and for people 65 years and older who earn under a certain income threshold. Call Family Community Support Services at 403.678.7129 for more information. You may even want to consider being a volunteer with this program and help those individuals in your neighborhood who have difficulty clearing their snow by shoveling their sidewalk for them.

Pets The frequent movement of wildlife through the Town is something that makes us unique. For the safety of both wild and domestic animals, all cats, dogs and other pets must be controlled at all times. This means that dogs must be on a leash at all times, except when in the three designated offleash areas (Elk Run Boulevard, Highway 1A, Quarry Lake). Dogs are not allowed in playgrounds or other public parks. The Town of Canmore requires that all dogs belonging to fulltime residents be licensed.

Lost & Found Can’t find your bike? Have a teenager who lost an iPod or cell phone? Missing your car keys? Call 403.678.4244 if you’ve lost something. Bylaw Services may have what you’re missing!

Canmore Pathways and Trails Large paper copies of our trail map are available at the Civic Centre Reception Area (902 - 7th Avenue). Online - www.canmore.ca/maps

Wildlife Sightings or Encounters Any wildlife encounters involving aggressive or threatening animals should be reported. All sightings of predators such as bears, cougars and wolves on trails or in and around the Town should be reported to Kananaskis Country dispatch 403.591.7755. In an emergency, call 911.

Share the Space Parking in Canmore can be a real challenge. Bylaw Services receives several complaints annually about vehicles that don’t move. Please remember that streets are public property and that primary use is for short term parking (less than 72 hours). If you are heading out of town on a trip or have a long term guest that doesn’t require their vehicle, make sure it is parked on private property to free up the parking on the street for others.

Starting a Business in Canmore Thinking of doing business in Canmore? Please email or contact the Business Registry Coordinator at 403.678.1503 or email businessregistry@canmore.ca to obtain your licence. Everyone conducting business must have a valid licence to operate in Canmore. If you have questions regarding how to set-up your business, visit the Government of Canada website www.canadabusiness.ca for a step by step checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions Q. I have just bought a home in Canmore. What do I need to do to set up a tax and utilities account with the Town? A. When you take possession your lawyer will register your name(s) on title with Alberta Land Titles. Based on the information received from Alberta Land Titles we update the Town of Canmore tax roll and utility (water, sewer, garbage) account (if applicable) twice a month to reflect current ownership additions and/or changes. You may also want to consider enrolling in the Town of Canmore pre-authorized payment plans for taxes and utilities. Visit www.canmore.ca/ Municipal-Services/Property-Tax/Payment-Options.html for details. Q. Where do I go to set up gas and electricity accounts on my new property? A. The Town of Canmore does not endorse any particular provider. Albertans can choose their electricity provider and rate plan. You have the option to choose between your regulated rate provider (see chart below) and power retailers. There are different electricity products, with different rates, terms and services, and some will suit Albertans’ needs and budgets better than others. In Alberta you have choices for electricity in your home or office. Under competitive retail service, you can choose to purchase your electricity and natural gas from a variety of retailers. You and the retailer of your choice may enter into a contract for the type and length of energy service you want. Retailers may offer long-term stable rate plans, “green” energy purchase plans or bundled plans for both electricity and natural gas. The regulated distribution company for your area will then deliver your energy to you. See below for options. Q. Where can I find more information on all the gas and electricity providers in Alberta? A. Alberta’s Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) provides this information at www.ucahelps.gov.ab.ca/ or by calling 310.4UCA (310.4822) toll-free anywhere in Alberta.
