M AYO R ’ S M E S S AG E Mayor Karen Vernon

For many people, 2020 will go down in history as the strangest year of their lives. Few in our community have not been impacted in some way by COVID-19. Council continues to be guided by our COVID-19 Recovery Strategy. Our cover story features Fusion Australia, a recipient of a Restart Vic Park community grant. We are launching the Town’s Community Charter this month, which is our promise about how we will interact and engage with our community. The Town is the first WA local government to partner with Plastic Free Places, an environmental sustainability program for local businesses. Check out which of your favourites are involved. Unwrap Vic Park, our festive season campaign, is underway. This year, more than ever, we want to encourage our community to choose local businesses for shopping, dining out, and entertaining

In February 2021 we begin upgrades to the playgrounds at JA Lee Reserve, Lathlain and The Promenade, Burswood. On behalf of our Council, a huge thank you to our community for your support and understanding during the unprecedented challenges this year. We wish you a joyous Christmas and festive season, well-deserved time with family and friends, and extend our hopes for a brighter and more sociallyconnected 2021. Stay safe.

WHO’S IN YOUR TOWN

Fusion Perth mentor COVID-impacted Kent Street SHS students Fusion Perth, located in Bentley, describe themselves as “a passionate bunch of people who want to make a difference”. Their major goal is to train, support and empower young people, but also recognise that the community also needs the same training and support. Their programs, which operate within the South East corridor of Perth and focus on Bentley and surrounds, include youth events, community festivals, accommodation services, training opportunities and programs in local schools. Fusion received a $9,805 Restart Community Grant from the Town to work with Kent Street Senior High School on a weekly life skills mentoring program for at-risk students. This program focuses on equipping and empowering students impacted by COVID-19 with useful skills and awareness for managing themselves, their mental health and their relationships. Fusion’s Schools Coordinator Jordan May provides mentoring and support to students as well as facilitating interactive activities and discussions valuable in managing everyday life and challenges. “The culture of the class is intentionally set by students, around values they see as important which builds a space of trust, safety and vulnerability,” says Jordan. “Students often enter the class feeling shy and selfconscious though over the course of the term you see them empowered to open up as they begin to trust one another without fear of judgment or rejection. Over time students become more selfaware of the impact they have on others and seek to influence others positively.”

Every class has multiple components designed to keep students engaged whilst having fun and learning. Teaching topics include self-view and awareness, bullying, social media versus reality, healthy communication, problem solving, intrinsic value and worth, coping with failure, and leadership and influence. “One of our favourites is giving students a tube of toothpaste, instructing them to squeeze the toothpaste out, then put it back in the tube. This is to illustrate the power of what we say and do to each other, some things are easily said and done but hard to take back. It gets messy!” Feedback from students illustrates how beneficial Fusion’s program is to them, with statements from participants like this: “I find the skills they teach us really useful. The one I remember the most was about how I see myself and how I really matter. That put into perspective most things about myself.” “It’s really fun and helped with my self-image and worth. I want to be at school more and I feel safe to be open.” “The thing I’ve found most useful is getting together and having discussions on things that help in the real world like how to respond to bullying and learning to be kind.” For more information about Fusion visit perth.fusion.org.au. Vic Park Funding Program Some of our grants, rebates and donations are open throughout the financial year, or until funds are allocated. We have more funding opportunities than ever before, so find out if you’re eligible for some financial assistance. Place grants Up to $15,000 is available per place grant. These aim to support community-led initiatives that: • make a positive contribution to the physical character, amenity or activation of a neighbourhood • build the capacity and capability of a town team or place-based group. Initiatives should foster collaboration and active participation of local people (residents, workers, business owners and/or community groups etc.) to address local priorities and improve local neighbourhoods. Eligibility criteria may apply, so please speak with your local Place Leader for advice on planning initiatives and preparing applications.

Restart business grants Small business resilience grants are designed to support small businesses that are actively engaged in the local economy to adapt, build resilience and grow during COVID-19 recovery. The maximum value is $1,000 per recipient.

Double the amount of funding for Street Meet ‘n’ Greet COVID-19 restrictions had a huge impact on our social wellbeing, and the Town is eager to work with the community to bring people back together in a safe way. The Town has doubled the funding for its Street Meet ‘n’ Greet street celebration road closure events - you now may be eligible for up to $800 in funding for a local neighbourhood event. We are looking for community champions to help lead and host events for their street. It’s easy to do and the Town will work with you to make your event a success. There are terms and conditions, so your first step should be to contact the Town to discuss your event idea. For more information head to victoriapark.wa.gov.au/smg.

Donations The Town’s donation program enables young people residing in the Town to make a positive contribution to their sporting, academic and educational achievement or youth leadership. Donations are designed for young people within our community aged 12 to 25.

Community Charter Our promise to you

We’ve developed a Community Charter Rather than develop several charters for our different areas in the way we work with community, we decided to develop one holistic charter to combine our commitments from across the business with one promise to our whole community, from the whole council. Last year, pre-COVID-19, Council supported and adopted the Community Charter. Now we’re well into recovery mode, and looking toward new beginnings in 2021, we’re super excited to launch it. The Town’s Community Charter is a holistic commitment designed to build better relationships between community and council. It outlines what community can expect from us in all our interactions, no matter where you are or who you deal with. It’s our promise to work in partnership with you to create a sustainable, inclusive and connected community – together! It is a statement of intent. It’s where we want to see you.

We will: Be Open

Connect & Engage

Take Action

Reflections of the Past

S U M M E R AT YO U R L I B R A RY

The Town of Victoria Park Local History Collection was established to preserve and promote the history of the local area. Selected framed photographs that have been entered in the biannual Local History Photographic Awards will be on display in the Victoria Park Library from 4 January to 27 February. Dating from 1907 to 1970, the photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into our past and a vision of life in the Town’s early days. To expand our collection we rely on the generosity of the community who allow us to collect copies from their families photographs. The Town is grateful for these contributions. Library members are welcome to borrow a little piece of Town’s history and to hang it in their own home for a period of up to two months.

As we head into the summer season, the Town’s aqua centre reminds the community that it is a Watch Around Water registered facility and that water safety is everyone’s responsibility. Watch Around Water is an education and awareness campaign run at public swimming pools that aims to reduce drowning and aquatic injuries amongst children through improved parental supervision. There are two key supervision guidelines: for children under five, and under 10. • Under five: Children must be constantly supervised and to remain within arm’s reach of a parent or guardian. (If the child is in the water, the parent or guardian must be in the water too). • Under 10: Children must be accompanied into the facility and constantly supervised by a parent/guardian. The parent/guardian must have clear, constant and direct access to the child at all times. For more information head to watcharoundwater.royallifesavingwa.com.au/faqs
