Message from the Mayor Hello everyone.

His Worship the Mayor Trevor Vaughan P: 9311 8155 M: 0447 374 528

It’s hard to believe we are almost a quarter of the way through a new year already. This year is shaping up to be another big one for the Town of Victoria Park.

There are a number of new and exciting projects happening. We have a team dedicated to working on the ‘activation’ of Albany Highway and you may have noticed some of their efforts with the installation of the Parklets, bike‑repair stations and Chinese New Year Celebrations. I hope you will agree that all of these small projects add up to enhancing the liveliness and vibrancy of our already world-class main street. Local government reform is moving on, and we have started discussions with the City of South Perth as to putting a definite plan and structure into place for the merging of the two Councils. The Local Government Advisory Board (LGAB) is still considering the formal submissions that have been made to them regarding all of the reform proposals.

Our joint submission goes through some convincingly clear reasons as to why a section of the Burswood Peninsula should not be carved out and handed to the City of Perth, as the Minister for Local Government is proposing. Please support our submission in writing to the LGAB. Visit www.dlgc.wa.gov.au for more information about submitting proposals. On a final note, please have a safe and happy Easter with family and friends and remember that myself, and my fellow Councillors are always available to have a chat with you, especially if you have any questions or ideas about Town projects and initiatives, or local government reform.

Mayor Trevor Vaughan

The LGAB is calling for members of the public to make their own submissions that relate to the proposals received. These public submissions close on 13 March. We urge you to make a written submission supporting the Town of Victoria Park and City of South Perth’s joint proposal (Proposal Number 13). It is vital that we keep fighting to keep the whole of the Burswood Peninsula within the new local government.

Curtin University Junior Soccer Club The Vic Park Rovers Junior Football Club has recently made an exciting move and partnered with the Curtin University Soccer Club to allow junior players a direct path to senior playing opportunities. The Vic Park Rovers Junior Football Club was formed in 1997 at its current home ground at Raphael Park in Victoria Park. The club was formed by a Vic Park father who wanted his young boys to be able to play football locally so he initiated the club with just a couple of teams. In 2013, Vic Park Rovers boasted 18 teams with 240 kids playing in age groups from five years to 17 years. The club keeps growing and the new 2014 season will be the inaugural year as a club catering for both junior and senior players under the banner of Curtin University Soccer Club.

Never fear, the Victoria Park ties remain strong as the Junior’s home ground continues at Raphael Park, a place held dear in many club members’ hearts. The newly expanded club now caters for players from five years of age to “as long as you can still run down the field” and, as part of the state league competition, offers a pathway for players who want to take their football more seriously, in addition to catering for social players. The club has a well‑qualified coaching base and some of the best facilities in the Perth metropolitan area with a growing reputation as a fun place to develop fantastic football and athletic skills. Registrations are now open for the 2014 season by email juniorsregistration@curtinsoccer.com or visit www.curtinsoccer.com

Cat Sterilisation Subsidy Is your cat sterilised? Is your cat registered? If yes, you might be eligible for a $50 rebate from the Town towards your cat’s sterilisation. The Town of Victoria Park and Department of Local Government and Communities have partnered to offer eligible residents a rebate on cat sterilisation. To qualify for the rebate, you must be a resident of the Town, and either a current full-time student, pensioner or health care card‑holder. Your cat must be sterilised, micro-chipped and currently registered with the Town. If your cat is not yet registered, you can apply for this subsidy at the time of registration. Application forms for the subsidy are available at the Town’s Administration Centre or online from the Town’s website. These subsidies are limited to 100 residents only, so be quick getting in your application. Once your application has been received and approved, either a cheque will be posted to you, or a bank transfer for the subsidy amount will be placed into your nominated bank account (your choice). For further information visit www.victoriapark.wa.gov.au or call 9311 8171.

The State Government is calling for the Perth community to have its say on local government reform in the metropolitan area. This is the LAST CHANCE to have your voice heard!

Anthony Vuleta, Acting CEO

Meet the Town’s Acting CEO!

The Town of Victoria Park and City of South Perth have submitted a joint proposal under which the two Councils will amalgamate, with a portion of the City of Canning, as well as the Burswood Peninsula being retained within the new local government. The State Government is proposing to carve out a section of the Burswood Peninsula to give to the City of Perth. The river is a natural boundary and the loss of revenue from rates and land value, as well as future developments planned for the area, will be a significant loss to our community. Support your Council by supporting our joint proposal, Proposal Number 13. The public consultation period is only open until 13 March 2014 so time is running out fast. Visit www.battleforburswood.com.au or fill out a form at the Town’s Administration Centre, Library or Leisure facilities.

In January the Town farewelled Chief Executive Officer, Arthur Kyron, as he takes up an exciting new opportunity in NSW, and welcomed Anthony Vuleta who is the Acting CEO over the next 12 months. Anthony, who has worked for the Town for 12 years, was previously the Director of the Renew Life Program before being offered this opportunity by Council. Born and raised in Perth, Anthony began his career in a civil design consultancy before moving into Local Government 23 years ago. He worked at the Cities of Swan and Belmont prior to starting with the Town in 2002, becoming Director of Renew Life in 2008. He is the State President for the Institute of Public Works WA and has been involved with the institute for 12 years. Anthony is a passionate motor‑enthusiast and will be skillfully steering the Town through the local government reform process over the coming months.

Lost Trolley! Help a lost shopping trolley find its way home

Some people take trolleys from their homes and leave them in the streets, parks, apartment car parks and on verges. The sad fact is, trolleys don’t like living on the streets. They look ugly, cause obstructions and are dangerous. They do not have a great sense of direction and often cannot find their way home. This is where you can help – if you see a lost trolley call: • Coles

1800 876 553

• Target & Woolworths 1800 641 497 www.trolleytracker.com.au

If you see Anthony out on The Café Strip, be sure to say hi!
