STANDARD SEAT AND BENCH The design is now well established in the market place as a top quality seat renowned for its elegant and refined appearance combined with superior strength. The style of this seat and bench is both classical and timeless which allows the products to enhance all types of architectural environment. The porthole circular feature has become the symbol of the Baltimore range and this original circular theme is carried through the whole range. It is an ideal place to personalise the units by featuring special insignia. The cast iron ends for the seat and bench are manufactured from ductile cast iron which gives two main advantages. Firstly this type of cast iron will not fracture under impact therefore providing added durability and secondly, because of the manufacturing process of ductile, intricate detailing in the design can be achieved. The cast iron ends are 40mm wide. For details on Materials and Finishing, please refer to the section on pages 15 and 16. The timber slats are produced from a Malaysian hardwood which originates from strictly controlled sustainable forests. Slats are machine finished and encapsulated in the end frame to protect end grain. They are secured with zinc plated coach bolts, these having tapered security pegs to prevent unauthorised removal. The coach bolt and screws used to secure the slats to intermediate support ribs are finished with matching colour. The seventeen slats on the standard seat are supported by mild steel ribs which eliminates any straining or bowing – particularly important when vandals so often choose to stand or even jump on the seating surface. The slats on the bench are supported by a steel upright mounted on to a cross strut to maintain the rigidity of the unit. All slats are treated with three applications of high quality wood preservative before assembly and despatch. If required, the slats can also be treated with a final coating of anti-graffiti clear varnish. We are always prepared to use alternative timber types and sources to special quotation but we cannot accept responsibility for subsequent performance defects inherent in such choices. It should also be noted that after outdoor exposure, all treated timbers can fade through the action of sunlight, rain and stain migration. To restore timber components to their original condition and maintain the level of wood preservation, a regular maintenance programme should be established. For further information, please ask for a copy of Townscape’s After Treatment of Timber Products and Components leaflet.

ARMRESTS Intermediate armrests can be fitted to both Standard and the Heavy Duty Seats. These armrests then provide three individual seating spaces, an arrangement which is often preferred by the public. The armrests also offer other advantages such as preventing vagrants from sleeping full length on the seats, assisting elderly people in raising and lowering themselves on the seat.

3

HEAVY-DUTY SEAT AND BENCH These two products have been developed by customer demand – they retain all the design features of the standard versions but are constructed to a much heavier material specification. The cast iron ends on the heavy-duty units are 65mm wide compared to 40mm wide on the standard versions. The size of the timber slat on the heavy-duty versions has been substantially increased. Each heavy-duty slat measures 75 x 50mm compared to 45 x 30mm for the standard slat. This reduces the total number of slats fitted into each unit. The heavy-duty seat has eleven slats compared to seventeen on the standard seat, and the heavy-duty bench has six slats compared to eight slats on the standard bench. The pre-treatment and care of slats is described on page 2. The standard and heavy-duty seats and benches are 1840mm and 1870mm respectively in overall length but they can all be made longer or shorter to special customer order. Again, all the seats and benches are generally on ground fix and two ragbolt points are cast in each foot for fixing to the ground. Alternatively, a below ground fix mild steel conversion can be supplied at extra cost to special order. The heavy-duty bench can be specially manufactured to form a square, hexagonal or octagonal shaped unit to surround a tree or similar feature. Special corner pieces are necessary to join the benches together and make the surround complete. The heavy duty seat slats can be used with mild steel elements to form hexagonal seating units. The method of assembly and finish of component parts is exactly as that of the standard units.

4

PICNIC SET This set is made up of the standard bench and a table with slats to the standard version dimensions. These products are built for exterior use and are therefore ideal for picnic or outdoor eating areas, such as fast food restaurants, which are heavily used by the public This picnic set is easy to keep clean and requires a minimal maintenance programme. It is recommended that the units are ragbolted to the ground or fixed into the ground to ensure stability. The standard picnic set comprising two benches and one table will seat six adults in comfort. Longer or shorter sets can be manufactured to special order.

PLANTERS

Townscape introduced this range of steel planters to meet the growing demand for use of planting units in interior applications. Although these planters are extremely robust and can be used on exterior sites, their smooth finish and visual detail is more appealing for shopping malls, foyers and reception areas than the more traditional precast concrete units. Designed with unique style and attention to detail incorporating the circular porthole theme, these products have a high level of durability and vandal-resistance. The superior quality finish ensures that the products are hard-wearing and easy to clean. The Baltimore range of planters offers one square and two round planters as standard. As these units are manufactured from mild steel, it is easy to amend these sizes to smaller or larger as required. The outer frame of the planter is an all-welded construction making the unit extremely strong and vandal-resistant. The inner sleeve is permanently fixed to this frame and can be finished in a different colour to the frame if required. The liners for all Baltimore planters are produced from galvanised mild steel sheet, a material which is resistant to corrosion and very robust so that the weight of the soil when filled will be contained. Drainage holes are provided in the base of the liner. Irrigation systems are available for all sizes of planter.

6

HANGING BASKET This attractive unit offers a high level planting facility which has become popular in many urban areas. One of the main advantages of high level planting is that the plants cannot so easily be reached by vandals. To facilitate watering the plants, the hanging baskets can be fitted with self-watering devices to special order. The hanging baskets can be ordered separately or in conjunction with a Townscape extended bollard with decorative hanging points. Chain is provided to hang the baskets from the extended bollard. Alternatively, a wall bracket type fixing can be supplied to special order.

7

LITTER BINS

One of the main considerations in choosing a litter bin is the capacity, not only for frequency of use of the bin but also for frequency of emptying. The Baltimore range of bins offers capacities ranging from 76 to 150 litres. The Baltimore bins are designed with strength and durability as the foremost factors whilst maintaining an aesthetic appeal. By the use of steel as a raw material and manufacturing methods employed, the bins have a high level of resistance to both fire and vandalism. The Baltimore litter bin is available in three versions, Major, Minor and Half Round. All three incorporate the circular porthole feature and like the planters, have an inner sleeve fixed to the frame which can be finished in a contrasting colour if required. Fixing points are standard in the base of the frame for securing the bin to the ground.

Baltimore Half Round

The Major and Minor offer a straightforward choice between a capacity to suit site circumstances. The Half Round is ideally suited to narrow walkways where space is limited. It can be wall mounted which allows for easy cleaning underneath the bin, or fixed to the floor. The Baltimore Minor can be manufactured incorporating an ashtray top to special order. See illustration. Liners for the bins are all manufactured from galvanised mild steel sheet to ensure resistance to corrosion. Drainage holes are provided in the base of the liner. Two handles are fitted to the liner to facilitate emptying. This range of litter bins is supplied in top quality powder coat finishes to BS or RAL colours. Please refer to Townscape Standard Colour Chart on page 17. As with all Townscape steel products, a regular maintenance schedule is recommended. For further details on Materials, Finishing and Maintenance, please refer to page 15.

PLAQUES

There is a growing demand for personalisation of products either by Councils, Enterprises or private individuals. Townscape has a unique method of producing these personalised plaques which allows extra fine detail to be incorporated into the design. This design is reproduced from camera-ready artwork which can either be provided by the customer or Townscape can arrange to have the design drawn up for a small extra cost. The thermo plastic plaque is then glued and riveted onto a mild steel backing plate in the porthole so that the visual appearance of the armrest is attractive from either side. The design detail on the plaque can be highlighted in gold or painted in full colour. Alternatively, an inscription service is available offering wording on a plaque up to a maximum size of 60mm high by any reasonable length or by engraving a timber seat slat. All plaques and engravings are subject to special quotation.

10

TREE ACCESSORIES To complement the seating, planters and litter bins, the Baltimore design theme is carried over to a range of stylish tree accessories including tree grids and guards. The grids are available as square or hexagonal plans in a range of sizes designed to meet a variety of site requirements and to offer optimum ease of handling. The Baltimore 1200 and 1500 Tree Grids are manufactured in two halves. As with the other grids in this range it is possible to customise one or all of the porthole features. The 1800 square Baltimore is made in four parts to facilitate ease of handling. Baltimore Hexagonal is a maximum of 1440mm nominal on plan and is manufactured in two parts to make up the six sided figure. All the above grids carry the circular porthole feature in the corner which can be used for customisation, uplighters, irrigation or even to accept a bollard. The porthole feature is also carried into a design of tree guard which will add the final touch to a Baltimore street furniture scheme.

Materials And Finishing

Steel Steel parts in the Baltimore range of litter bins and planters all conform to BS 4360 43A or 43C. Mild steel is a very versatile material that retains its properties after manufacturing processes such as cutting, bending and welding. It is these properties that allow the basic design features to be recreated throughout. During their finishing process, steel products will be shotblasted to SA 2.5/ 3.0 or acid cleaned prior to electro zinc plating. This process will provide an even deposit of zinc and zinc alloy over the whole surface of the material. The product is then chrome passivated and rinsed, this improves the surface finish and ensures maximum chemical adhesion of subsequent polyester finishes. Plating is applied to a minimum thickness of 15 microns. The sacrificial and sealing action of the zinc prevents any rust staining if severely damaged.

Cast Iron

All Baltimore seat, bench, table ends and tree grids are produced in S.G. cast iron, a ductile material which means that under tensile force it will elongate to a considerable extent before breaking. S.G. iron is supplied in accordance with BS EN 1563 : 1997, it is also referred to as nodular iron and is widely used in the engineering industry. It is produced from selected base metals with specific chemical additives. Melting is closely controlled in electric furnaces and is subject to tight quality control systems that comply with ISO 9002 requirements. Grey or flake iron, BS 1452, is not ductile, has very little tensile strength and is susceptible to cracking or breakage. All cast iron products undergo two fettling and shot blasting processes prior to paint application. This removes all surface rust and contamination and produces a casting that is ideally suited for public use. Then a two pack epoxy primer will be applied giving a dry film thickness of 50 to 75 microns which is equivalent to 80/125 microns wet. It gives an excellent anti-corrosive finish and is resistant to abrasion. At 75 microns it is possible to withstand exterior exposure for three years and will show no breakdown at 2000 hours of salt spray test.

15

Materials And Finishing Polyester Powder Coating Following their priming process, steel and cast iron products are polyester powder coated by an electrostatic process which ensures complete coverage. The coating is then cured in heated ovens under controlled conditions to give a very hard wearing surface finish with excellent resistance to exterior exposure. The combined system will give a minimum thickness of 90 microns, this ensures that when severely damaged, the polyester coating will not lift. Additionally the sacrificial and sealing action of the zinc layer will prevent unsightly brown rust staining. The polyester powder has been thoroughly tested under controlled conditions. Samples tested for resistance to salt spray, humidity and water soak at 40 degrees centigrade showed no breakdown and were resistant to most acids, alkalis and oils. Exterior exposure tests to BS 3900 Part 2 showed minimal loss of gloss and colour after 2000 hours. Similar results were obtained with a 12 month Florida exposure (45 degree angle). The range of colours offered by Townscape has been developed combining the latest polyester resin and pigment technology to produce a product with excellent decorative effect and superior outdoor durability.

Timber

All timbers are machined from quality hardwood originating from carefully husbanded forests of Africa and Malaysia. The timber is exceptionally smooth grained, however, all hardwoods are susceptible to splits and shakes appearing over the course of time. All timber components are coated with three coats of high quality wood treatment before assembly and despatch.

Maintenance

All Townscape products require a minimum of maintenance and aftercare. A regular inspection to verify ground fixings and the finished coatings of both metal and timber components is essential. Damage to paintwork can be remedied by application of a suitable primer and topcoat with compatible products. It should also be noted that after outdoor exposure, all treated timbers can fade through the action of sunlight, rain and stain migration. To restore timber components to their original condition and maintain the level of wood preservation, a regular maintenance programme must be established.
