Introduction As market leaders in street furniture, Townscape have produced this brochure which brings together the widest selection of bollards available on the market in terms of design, function and combination of different raw materials and finishes. All Townscape bollards are manufactured with strict quality control procedures taking place at each stage of manufacture. Following painting, the bollards receive their last quality check prior to packaging and despatch to site. Townscape advise that a maintenance programme must be established for all their products. Vandalism is an accepted fact of society in today’s world which sadly has an effect on street furniture. In order to maintain Townscape bollards, particularly steel and cast iron designs, regular maintenance is essential.

Steel Bollards The Townscape steel bollard range contains a wide variety of designs which combine high strength along with a style to complement any landscape environment. Designs vary from a simple steel post to more decorative styles in round and square formats. The Coldstream has established itself as one of our best selling bollards, and its streamlined style suits both traditional and modern site application. The Gateshead is slightly more decorative with two prominent recess rings. The Commander range of bollards takes its name from the decorative rings positioned some 100mm from the bollard top. All the bollards are circular in section and due to the enormous popularity of this economy design, there is now a choice of 7 diameter sizes 90, 114, 127, 140, 170, 195 and 200mm. The above ground measurement is 900mm. These designs are all manufactured from high quality steel hollow section, the machined construction resulting in a strong and durable end product with a minimal maintenance routine. All recesses can be coloured separately or highlighted with reflective strips to the main colour of the bollard or to accommodate multi-coloured schemes and special liveries. Above or below ground lengths can be shortened or lengthened to suit customer specification.

Super Plus Finish Townscape’s multi-stage finishing process which marries all polyester powder coating benefits to specialist pre-treatment and zinc plating process remains one of the strongest and most durable surface finishes currently available. Firstly, all steel bollard components are thoroughly shot-blasted to remove rust and other surface contamination and promote good mechanical adhesion of subsequent zinc and powder coatings. Secondly, alkaline-degreasing, acid-pickling and electroplating processes chemically cleanse and automatically deposit 15 microns of hard zinc and zinc-iron alloy evenly over all steel work, whilst maintaining original surface smoothness and fine detail. Thirdly, the zinc plating is then chromate passivated and rinsed prior to further special surface treatments, to ensure maximum chemical adhesion of subsequent polyester finishes, both initially and under exposed conditions experienced when in use.

Commander

2

Coldstream

Finally, a typical 75-100 microns of high quality polyester powder is applied electrostatically then oven cured to produce a very hard finish with excellent adhesion between the zinc and polyester interfaces. The new finishing system is completely durable outdoors, even if severely damaged through to the steel substrate. The exposed polyester coating edges will not lift, and the sacrificial and sealing action of the zinc layer will prevent unsightly brown rust staining. The product appearance is thus maintained for much longer before greatly simplified maintenance and repair procedures are implemented. Alternatively, bollards can be supplied shotblasted and painted with a two pack epoxy primer for site painting after installation. This can help minimise site damage and facilitate colour matching with paint work on other items. Gateshead

All bollards are despatched to site in pristine condition, adequate use of corrugated wrapper, bubble wrap and protective cartons is made.

The selection of a steel bollard is usually based on its style suiting the architectural environment of the site where it is to be positioned. Townscape has always maintained an innovative approach to design and the bollards shown on these pages offer exciting modern alternatives to the traditional Victoriana designs.

Gemini Major

The Gemini bollard is produced with a cast iron top welded to a steel tube shank forming a strong and sturdy product. It is available in two formats Major and Minor. The bollard has an unusual futuristic appearance and if required, the recess detail can be highlighted in a contrasting colour to the rest of the bollard, or for site visibility can be treated with a reflective material. The Cardinal bollard is a new design, currently available in two sizes, Minor and Demi. The bollards are again constructed by the use of a cast iron top welded to a steel tube shank achieving a strong bulk of bollard without the disadvantage of excessive weight. Part of a co-ordinated suite, the Metro bollard is offered in two tube diameter sizes and has a steel tube shank with an aluminium cap featuring the Metro oval slot pattern in a raised profile all around the cap. A seat, litter bin, tree grid and guard are all offered to match the bollard.

Trafalgar, Russell and Piccadilly

Russell with Ashtray

To add interest on a bollard surface, the Trafalgar, Piccadilly and Russell bollards have decorative recess panels on each face of the square section. The shape features of diamond, circle or slot are highlighted in a separate colour offering an exciting and colourful design alternative. This idea can be developed to suit a specific project as other shapes or symbols can be produced to special order.

Square section steel bollards can be used to create a completely different effect to circular bollards on a scheme. Shown here are the Grenadier and Grenadier Major which both have recess features.

Newtown

Carlisle

The Newtown, Chester, Carlisle and Car Park are all manufactured from a smaller tube size but remain popular for their traditional look. Many accessories are available for these and all other bollards including eyebolt/chain fixings, reinforced and sacrificial ground fixings, and removable versions. Please refer to the special section in this brochure on pages 21 to 23. A useful product in all towns and cities, this Newtown Major has a flat recess in the tube surface which can hold any type of signage more frequently it bears the “No Parking notice. This recess can in fact be manufactured on any of our standard range of bollards with a diameter measuring a minimum of 168mm.

Stainless Steel The Nexus bollards are high-tech stainless steel designs. The Cappa and Zeta combine the use of stainless steel with decorative detail in cast aluminium, this detail being finished with a polyester powder coating. As well as these decorative designs, plain stainless steel posts can also be offered in a variety of tube diameters. They are manufactured from grade 316 tube, this material offers probably the best protection against the majority of acids and chemicals. Tube sizes available are 42, 48, 76, 89, 104, 114, 133 and 154mm, they are available in standard lengths of 700-750 above ground and 900-950 above ground. Flat or dome caps can be specified. Removable and on ground fix units can be supplied. The standard finish will be 240 grit (satin) to complement the stainless steel seating, planters and litter bins.

Aluminium The Nile and Aztec bollards are typical of Townscape’s design philosophy of functional performance allied to distinctive appearance. The light weight of these bollards is desirable where removable units are required. The consistently close-grained textured caps are high aluminium castings secured to aluminium shafts. A different emphasis can be put on the product’s function by using high visibility colours for caps and neutral shades on the shafts. Alternatively where more subtle contrasts are appropriate the specifier may choose their preferred combination from any of Townscape’s extensive standard range of electrostatically deposited polyester powder coatings.

Slimline Bollards The standard range of Slimline designs has been extended to include three additional profile options in the form of the Slimline Sprite, Slimline Protector and the Slimline Deluxe. The three profiles are available with four ground fixing options: On-ground, In-ground, Fold-down and Removable. The Slimline Sprite Fold-down has been developed from the original Hinged Slimline and has an upgraded hinge mechanism and keeper plate while still retaining its essentially Slimline look which is particularly appropriate for private car parks. Slimline Protector Fold-down while still having a discreet appearance is formed from a 60 x 60mm hollow section mounted on a robust hinge spindle secured within a semi-circular ground anchor assembly.

Sprite

The hinged spindle is secured to the anchor assembly by purpose-made heavy cap-screws that work in nylon bushes. These ensure a long-life smooth action when raising and lowering the bollard. A keeper plate integral with the bollard and concealed by the semi-circular sides of the anchor assembly locates with a hole in the side of this assembly to accept a hasp lock to secure the bollard in the vertical position. In the horizontal at-rest position the bollard is supported by a short spigot from its front face and is retained by the lock which is secured to the semi-circular anchor assembly. At rest the unit’s maximum height above ground is 105mm which gives adequate clearance for all popular production car underbody configurations. Specifiers are advised to check that this height is not exceeded during installation and that no vehicles of any type with excessively low ground-clearance are likely to use the area.

Protector

The semi-circular sides of the anchor assembly have been carefully profiled to ensure that rubbish is not retained within the body of the assembly thus preventing the free action of the hinge. The Slimline De Luxe Fold-down has the same anchor assembly as the Protector but is formed from 60mm diameter tube with an incised band feature that can be coloured to contrast with the main column of the bollard. Alternatively this band can carry reflective material. On-ground designs have a square plate at ground level with four holes for ragbolt fixing. The In-ground type has an extended shank for concreting into the sub-grade and the Removable is extended to fit into an in-ground boot closed by a hinged plate with a securing slot which when the bollard is in place locks to a tab on the bollard shank.

Amsterdam

The Amsterdam and Paris guardposts are ideal for architectural and domestic situations. Both Paris and Amsterdam guardposts offer a ‘cast look’ at an economical cost. Made by a unique spinning method they have a strength that belies their refined appearance. The spun section of the slender Paris is confined above the optimum point of impact of private motor vehicles and is welded to a standard heavy-duty tubing below this point. The broader Amsterdam also has a tube of a similar gauge which forms the lower and in-ground section. Paris

The cost and overall proportions of the designs are aimed at multiple installation at frequent intervals, not only to keep vehicles from encroaching on pedestrian ways but equally to deter pedestrians from straying from the straight and narrow path.

Defender Series These unique bollards have a specialist function and have been developed by Townscape especially for supermarket car parks although the design can be equally useful for other applications where trolleys are used by members of the public, such as bus, railway stations and airports. Two basic designs are available, one in steel and the other in precast concrete. Both feature a polypropylene collar with a ribbed effect, positioned to withstand impact from trolley or other light vehicle traffic. The Defender steel has an overall length of 1200mm with 900mm generally above ground and a 150mm diameter shaft. The collar sits 150mm from the top of the bollard and is riveted securely to the steel bollard. The Defender concrete is also 1200mm overall in length but has a larger diameter of 253mm. The collar sits 150mm from the top of the bollard and is attached to the concrete in the manufacturing process. The two above products are designed for use with supermarket trolleys as the collar sits at the correct height to withstand impact from such trolleys. However for luggage trolleys, the collar is extended to a lower level on the bollard in order to align with trolley design. As far as finish is concerned the collar feature is black as standard although other colours may be available for large quantity orders. The Defender steel can be polyester powder coated in the Townscape range of eighteen standard colours. The Defender concrete is offered in any exposed aggregate finish usually using a 6mm size aggregate.

Cast Iron Bollards An extensive range of cast iron bollard designs is available for prestige areas and to complement places of architectural interest. These bollards reflect periods of English history in design, such as Edwardian, Regency, etc. whilst employing modern day techniques to ensure a high quality finish. Most bollards can be adapted in many ways to suit customer requirements. For example, an extension pole can be added to a bollard to accommodate a light fittings, jardiniere or directional fingers.

Elizabethan

Additionally access covers for lighting switchgear can be incorporated in the base of some of the bollards. The Capstan Minor is offered as a post and rail system. Although it is possible to modify a cast iron bollard to make it removable, it is not always practical in the case of the larger bollards as they are extremely heavy and almost impossible for an individual to lift out of the ground. Manufacturing in ductile s.g. iron to BS 2789:1985 grade 420/12 ensures that a combination of high strength and good resistance against corrosion is possible.

Cast iron bollards are finished to a high specification. After shotblasting, they are primed to a thickness of 75 microns with a special rust inhibiting primer, which, will itself withstand exterior exposure for three years. A final application of polyester powder gives the bollard its final colour coating. Other street furniture items in s.g. cast iron to the same high specification are also available to complement these bollard designs. Please refer to separate brochures or CD ROM.

Derby Fold-Down Bollards This unique product fills a gap in the market to resolve a problem situation which every specifier will encounter at some time when working on a project. A row of Derby Fold Down Bollards forms an ideal temporary barrier arrangement which is solid enough to deter ram raider attacks etc. but will allow fast access for emergency vehicles. This product has proved ideal for part-time pedestrianisation schemes in areas such as markets where pedestrian access is only essential during certain hours of the day. As the bollards are raised vehicles are re-routed, but after market hours, the normal traffic flow can be resumed by folding away the bollards. The unfortunate but acknowledged high level of vandalism in our society today puts added pressure on the performance of a ‘removable bollard’. This Fold Down Bollard lessens the risk of vandal attack in that it can be easily raised and locked into an effective vertical position when required, yet unobtrusive and safely stowed when lowered and completely covered by a neat fitting lid when not in use. The original design of the slide-box mechanism is owned by Derby City Council and the complete unit was developed at Townscape in conjunction with Derby City Council to perfect the operation of this product. Bollard designs remain the property of Townscape Products Limited. The Fold Down Bollard is manufactured in mild steel, and is available in two styles, the “standard” and the “wide body”. The “standard” body is fabricated to dimensions that allow slim bollards up to maximum of 90mm shaft diameter to be incorporated whilst the “wide body” will allow bollards of a more substantial appearance and to a maximum shaft size of 140mm to be fitted. The overall dimensions of the “wide body” are naturally larger. The principles and operation of both styles are the same. The units comprise a “lift and slide” mechanism to which is attached the bollard, the box section and finally the lid. The box section is fixed below ground level with the lid when in closed position, lying flush with the surrounding floor level. The lift and slide section allows the bollard to be lowered from its vertical ‘in place’ position into the box section by simply removing the lid, lowering the bollard into the box section and replacing lid. Standard units are available with hinged lid section and can be locked into position by either a padlock or with a newly introduced pawl lock with a simple 90 degree turn to lock operation. The pawl lock has a triangular (8mm) head style and is recessed below the top surface of the cover plate. The lid on the standard unit can be modified to be completely removable, lift off, however, care and attention to lid weight must be observed by specifier because of attendant risk. The hinged lid only is offered for the wide body version again, pawl locks or single padlock fixing. The Fold Down bollards offer effective barriers that can be swiftly raised or lowered and completely hidden from sight with the flush fitting lid not creating a hazard to either pedestrian or vehicle. All bollards are fitted with a steel lifting ring manufactured from 8mm diameter bar, to assist in the lifting or lowering operation. It is possible for wheelchair users to operate this product with the standard body, hinged lid and lightweight bollard. For options, please see line drawings on page 16 It is essential when employing this type of bollard that installation is carried out correctly and adequate provision is made with the sub grade to allow drainage. As with all moving parts, routine lubrication to ensure continuing free movement is necessary. Regular maintenance and cleaning is required to ensure the box is kept free of debris.

Bollard Extensions Most steel and cast iron bollards can be fitted with an extension column which is often required in a row of bollards where a higher level is needed at intervals to accommodate light fittings, directional signs or purely decorative hanging baskets or planting features. The columns are welded to the bollard and can be any length up to five metres overall. Finger posts can be supplied with wording in any typeface and highlighted in gold or other colour. Any number of fingers can be supported by the extensions as they are simply fixed to the extension pole by a collar which is then secured in the correct position. Planting features are particularly popular as the high level plants are less prone to theft and vandal abuse. Self-watering units can be supplied for ease of watering on site. If a lighting unit is to be added, a door facility can be incorporated into the bollard base so that electrical components can be fitted and maintained. Hanging basket arms, banner support rails and post caps are all available and can be fixed in position before despatch. The extension pole can also house modern communication and security devices, camouflaged by hanging baskets if necessary.

17

Barriers and Rails

Planter Surround

Bollards are extremely versatile units which can easily be transformed into numerous kinds of railing systems for pedestrian/traffic management. Shown here is a planter surround, an ideal way of offering protection to open planting areas, as well as straight run of bollard post and rail application. All steel bollards can easily be adapted to take steel tubular railings.

Greenwich Barrier

The Capstan cast iron bollard has been modified to provide a purpose design post and rail system. The bollard has been reduced in size proportionally to accommodate a knee high railing, the posts are positioned at 1.5 metre intervals as standard although this can be altered to accommodate site conditions. Some areas are well suited to timber post and rail systems and this Greenwich barrier is a typical example.

Capstan Post and Rail

18

Barrier panels are used extensively to protect pedestrians and cyclists from traffic flow and because of their simple structure, they can be produced to virtually any height or length with a choice of single or double inner rails. As well as standard galvanising and polyester powder finish, these barrier panels are also offered in stainless steel which may appeal more in shopping malls and other interior applications.

Suitable for warehouses, factories, dockyards etc., the boom barrier provides an ideal method of creating a security check point or simply preventing vehicle entry/exit. The vertical posts are a modified version of the steel bollard range and the horizontal barrier arm is manufactured from rectangular hollow section with a counterbalanced end. The unit is manually operated with little effort required and may be locked in position when not in use. Barrier widths to suit customer requirements are available up to a maximum of 5.5 metres, or 10.0 metres when double unit used.

Boom Barrier

The barrier gate is the main alternative to the boom barrier and is generally used for applications where the gateway needs to be left open for longer periods. The vertical posts for this unit are based on the steel bollard range with a gate structure from rectangular hollow section. A hold back post for the gate is recommended. The barrier gate is supplied in widths between 2.5 and 5.5 metres to suit site circumstances. As an additional option, a double barrier gate is available for two-way traffic thoroughfare. Maximum standard width for double barrier is 9.5 metres. All barriers are manufactured to specific customer requirements and detailed quotations can be supplied on request.

Knee Rail

Knee Rail

Situations often arise where boundary demarcation is necessary without making the fence or barrier the central focal point. Townscape’s Knee Rail fence is the ideal answer for these areas as the low level diamond shaped rail is a neat construction which is clearly visible, but unobtrusive in appearance. Usually manufactured for level ground, there is however a version which has a provision for 10 degree horizontal or lateral movement to suit sloping ground and this should be specified at order stage. Generally manufactured in 1200mm long bays, the knee rail can be ordered in sizes and quantities to suit any situation. Posts are available for straight sections, corners or T junctions enabling complete areas to be fenced off with ease. Where required, end make-up bays can be specially ordered to suit circumstances. The posts are 800mm overall and generally 500mm is left above ground. The horizontal rails and vertical posts are both of high strength square hollow steel sections (40mm and 60mm) ensuring a combination of long life and pleasing design. Standard finish is black although any RAL colour can be supplied to special order.

Installation The knee rail is easily installed by planting a post 300mm into a hole and securing with concrete, then by sliding a horizontal rail into position before securing the following post. Care should always be taken to ensure that the horizontal rails are level and in-line to create a neat and tidy effect.

Removable Bollards On sites where regular or occasional access is a criteria all bollards can be manufactured as removable versions. When considering a removable bollard please refer to the weights in the bollard technical data to ensure that personnel removing the bollard can handle the weight. Two versions of shoe are available, standard and economy. The standard version is a bollard supplied complete with a sleeve which holds the bollard in position and can be locked by means of a conventional padlock. When the bollard is removed, the hole in the ground is covered by a hinged lid. A square baseplate is attached to the sleeve which can accommodate a round or square bollard, the square baseplate varies in size according to the diameter of the bollard. Please check this detail prior to specifying.

Economy

Standard

The economy version is a simple sleeve which holds the bollard in position and is locked in place by a pin and padlock. However when the bollard is removed, a section of the sleeve is left above ground since there is no cover for the sleeve therefore debris can easily enter the cavity. It is therefore recommended that the economy version is used on sites where the bollard is removed for short, supervised periods. A lifting device to facilitate the lifting of removable bollards is available. This device fits over the bollard and connects with the base making it much easier for two people to handle the bollard when removing it from its hole.

Fold Down Bollards The majority of Townscape bollards can be produced as fold-down versions to special quotation. However it is absolutely essential that site conditions and use are taken into consideration when specifying a fold-down bollard product. In particular, attention must be paid to vehicle clearance levels if it is to be used in a car parking application. When installing a fold down type bollard, the site must be level in all directions from the fixing point. It is not intended that vehicles make contact with any part of the product. Additionally, the weight of the bollard must be considered to ensure that personnel operating the unit can handle its weight. The bollard should be lowered carefully to the ground and not allowed to freefall. Regular maintenance of the fold down device is essential to ensure debris is not allowed to build up around the hinge assembly. 21

Special Manufacture Townscape has both CAD and extensive manufacturing facilities to undertake production of special design bollards and other street furniture items in most raw materials. For more details, please contact Sales Office.

Reinforced Bollard Sacrificial Bollard Fixing

To give increased security in areas that may be subject to ram raiding, or to give extra protection for bollards which have to withstand repeated vehicle impact, Townscape can provide extra strength bollards which are specially reinforced. The reinforcing is manufactured from 6mm thick mild steel plate and formed into a cross shape which is then passed inside the bollard. This reinforcement extends beyond the standard length of the bollard by a further 200mm. This strengthening feature can be incorporated into almost all Townscape bollard designs. The strengthening and lengthening of the bollard requires substantial speed and weight to effect a shear loading or displacement.

The purpose of the sacrificial method of fixing is to provide a protection barrier yet if necessary the bollard can ‘sacrifice’ itself if access is required quickly and urgently, the system can also reduce the amount of damage that could be impacted to a vehicle striking a permanently fixed bollard.

Concrete Filling Time and expense on site can be saved by having certain bollard designs concrete filled prior to delivery. Apart from filling time, the fixing of caps and painting to an acceptable standard are costly operations and as the use of concrete filled steel bollards is becoming more commonplace, Townscape can now offer to provide the bollards ready filled.

The sacrificial bollard is comprised of two parts - the bollard section and the shoe section. Special bolts are used to connect the bollard to the shoe and the design of the bolt is such that when the bollard is struck by a vehicle, the bolts will shear allowing the bollard to fall. The bollard is simply and quickly replaced with minimal cost.

Bollard Skirts To enhance the visual appearance of a bollard fixed into the ground, the optional skirt offers a neat solution. Having a plan dimension of 200 x 200mm the skirt can easily be fitted into interlocking blockwork or other paving. Bollard Skirt

22

Highlighting Bollards with recess bands are ideal for highlighting in gold or other colours to enhance a special colour scheme or corporate livery. Cast iron bollards can be made to look most individual and prestigious by gold decoration. In a more functional mode, reflective bands can be added to bollards to make them visible in vehicle headlights or poor weather conditions.

Customisation Crests, lettering or other insignia can be fixed on to most bollards. There is a growing demand for personalisation of products either by Councils, private enterprises and individuals. Townscape can meet most requests by a photoetched outline on a thermal plastic plate. The outline of the crest, symbol or wording, is reproduced from camera-ready artwork and can incorporate quite fine detail. This is then painted to any RAL colour and the detail highlighted in gold or painted in other colours by hand.

Eye-Bolts for Chain Fixings Most bollards can be supplied with eye-bolts to facilitate chain or rope fixings. Special hook-bolts are available in lieu of eye-bolts. Plan positions should be indicated when ordering to ensure that correct angles are achieved.

Concrete Bollards Concrete bollards remain popular as a raw material because they weather naturally with the elements and have a lower maintenance schedule than that required for steel or cast iron bollards. The Townscape range of concrete bollards provides a choice of size, weight, design and finish to meet almost every situation. Most commonly, concrete bollards are used in urban landscape areas where there is a requirement for an open barrier.

Minster

Shown here are the well established Minster and Lindrick designs which remain best sellers and are proven performers. The Penny is a dual function bollard which can also be used as seating or resting units as well as fulfilling a bollard role, furthermore, the unit can easily be turned into a cycle holder. The Quartet (Minor and Major), Alton and Reigate offer a further choice of traditional styles. When choosing a bollard, the decision should be made relative to both visual and physical deterrent aspects. Height should take regard of driver visibility in the case of car parks, etc. There is a wide price range for concrete bollards, however in the lower price category are the more basic designs where finishes are confined to plain concrete in grey or white. These general purpose bollards are favoured for situations where utility is the prime consideration. Our exposed aggregate range will appeal to the more discerning specifier. These designs are of a more detailed nature and give a greater possibility of blending the bollards into the overall landscape design, additionally, the rugged surface finish is less easily vandalised.

Reigate

The standard aggregate finish for concrete bollards is Natural Round (a brown and fawn riverbed aggregate) or Ballidon (a quarried aggregate of cream and mushroom colour). Any other aggregate finishes can be produced to special order. If required, for sponsorship or advisory purposes, plaques can be mounted onto a bollard, again to special order.

Concrete has no flexural properties and under severe impact will fracture, this ability to fracture under impact may have an advantage in circumstances of severe collision. The purpose of re-inforcement is mainly to hold the larger fragments together when impacted and avoid injuries to pedestrians. Mild steel bar to BS4360:1990 is used throughout. 25

The Stele and Brute bollards form part of the Citizen range and have the thematic collar detail permanently integrated with the cap and shaft units. The cap is cast to insert into the top of the shaft, secured by an adhesive bond which is even stronger than the concrete mix. The collar is from a sturdy aluminium section and cannot be removed or seriously damaged by vandalism. Although permanently integrated, the collars do not constitute a maintenance problem as the highly abrasion resistant stoved polyester coating of the aluminium ensures a long life. The collar can be coated to any RAL colour. Brute

Bloc 760A

Bloc 560A

The Bloc 560A bollard shown here in exposed aggregate finish can also be supplied with an etched surface for use as a sit-upon unit known as the Sitz-Stone. Additionally its reduced below ground shank makes it suitable for applications where a shallow depth of ground exists.

26

Cape Town

Also illustrated is the Bloc 760 bollard which can be supplied in plain grey or white but is represented here with a customer painted finish which can be achieved in Townscape’s factory or on site after installation. The Cape Town bollard has a very stylish outline making it most suitable for prestigious applications. As an added advantage, the height makes it possible to use the top as a resting place. Finish is exposed aggregate as standard and the use of the Arctic range of aggregates particularly enhance this design. The Tromso and Stockholm bollards are brand new designs and offer unique and interesting shapes to the extent where the products take on a sculptured visual appearance. These two designs are well suited to the use of a smaller size aggregate to define their detail. It may be worth noting that these bollards designs are offered in timber - see section on timber bollards. The concrete bollards shown in this section make up the Townscape range of exposed aggregate and plain designs, there is a further economy range offered and details of these seven economy bollards are shown in the Technical Data section.

Concrete Bollard Features Reflectif ‘Reflectif’ is an applied finish of minute glass beads which give a white effect during the daytime but reflect the light of headlights of vehicles in poor visibility and after dark. The finish is recommended where the visibility of bollards at night is essential and it makes a significant contribution to road safety. Some designs can be supplied with ‘Reflectif’ caps or bands to make the bollard more visible to those with impaired vision.

Removable Certain situations dictate that bollards need to be semi-permanently fixed, allowing temporary access for emergency vehicles etc. Most parallel sided bollards can be supplied in removable form with a reduced length shank in order to fit into a below-ground precast concrete socket. A plastics-lined lifting hole is provided in the bollard through which a bar may be passed for quick and easy removal.

Section Bollard For the protection of corners of brickwork in areas of heavy traffic, the Linby bollard is available in three-quarter section as standard but other designs are to special order.

Bollards for Customer Painting If a particular colour scheme is required, smooth OPC or white concrete bollards can be painted for an unusual finish. This work is normally done on site after installation. Opposite is a typical example using the Windsor bollard.

Variwall Retaining Wall Variwall is a modular walling system unique in its own versatility. The prefabricated retaining wall provides a high degree of structural strength combined with a striking visual appearance. The system comprises a number of precast concrete, vertical, cylindrical units each containing a small groove into which the adjoining unit fits precisely thereby creating an interlock. This interlocking combined with the units firmly bedded into a concrete footing provides great strength throughout the entire length. The units available allow the wall to be constructed in a variety of height/width ratios giving a combination of pleasing visual appearance. In addition, the circular section allows the wall to be curved to any profile. Similarly the wall may be stepped up or down to suit requirements.

Variwall

A concealed drainage groove channels moisture down to the base of the wall thus eliminating the need for unsightly weep holes. Two sizes of Variwall are available: Small with an overall height of 900mm, an effective module size of 225mm and therefore 4.44 modules per metre run: Large with an overall height of 1200mm, an effective module size of 320mm and therefore 3.12 modules per metre run.

Terrabloc Retaining Wall This utility concrete element, Terrabloc is available in a choice of exposed aggregate or simulated brick pattern face. A left and right mitred unit enables external 90 degree angles to be achieved, making possible raised flower beds or other features. The base takes up a minimum of ground or raised surface area. Adequate drainage channels are incorporated into side joints. A larger size unit is also available for engineering applications, known as the Terrabloc Major. Terrabloc Major Terrabloc

Golf Collection An entirely new range of products for golf and other leisure establishments, manufactured in high-grade exposed aggregate finish concrete. Concrete spheres of exposed aggregate make up the Golf Ball bollard which provides a visual and physical deterrent to vehicle overrun. The finely exposed surface finish incorporates a quartz sparkle which helps to reflect the light from vehicles in poorly lit or dark conditions. The same Golf Ball sphere can be supplied with an information plaque as shown. The Tee seat is a sit-upon unit in the image of the standard golf tee. The exposed aggregate column flares to a rounded top in plain finish, which is slightly dished with provision for drainage. The unit is intended for below ground fix and has a seat height of 550mm.

ECO Range The Eco range represents Townscape’s contribution to the conservation of natural resources and care of the environment. Made from a variety of waste plastics, the basic material of the products has a secondary conservation role by contributing to the re-use of the materials that go into the original manufacture of plastics. The main ingredients are low and high density polyolefins which combine to give malleability, flexibility and resistance to impact.

Recycled plastic has the following advantages: 1.

Durable and rot-free.

2.

Water-resistant.

3.

Easy to clean and resistant to graffiti.

4.

Self-finish in a variety of all-through colours.

5.

Does not splinter or shake like wood.

6.

Hygienic, will not harbour bacteria.

7.

Impervious to most corrosives.

Mace, Furze and Holm

The particular material formulation chosen for these designs has a slightly rustic surface appropriate to the exterior environment which is complemented by the mild steel accessories finished in Townscape’s Super-plus finishing process. The Super-plus treatment involves extensive pre-treatment to remove contaminates and mill scale followed by zinc plating prior to the electrostatic deposition of the polyester powder coat which is oven cured at 200 degree C. Offered in this range are the Mace, Furze and Holm bollards, which are illustrated above, one circular and two square designs. The larger square design can easily be modified to become an effective post and rail unit.

Timber Bollards

Greenwich

It is sometimes assumed that timber bollards are only suitable for woodland areas. However, these bollards have been enormously successful in high-density urban areas. One advantage is that timber weathers naturally and of course requires little maintenance once installed. The type of timber used for these bollards is generally Balau, Purple Heart or Green Heart from either Malaysia or Indonesia. All of these timbers have been selected for their quality but also they are sourced from managed forests. It must however be stated that timber is rarely totally perfect in appearance . Knotting, graining and splitting (shakes) are all apparent in timber and although every effort is taken to select timber sections of superior quality it is inevitable that there will be some visual imperfections. Additionally in prolonged dry climate conditions, shakes will tend to worsen as the timber dries out, but this does not impair the soundness of the product. All timber bollards are now produced in-house at Townscape. This machine is the latest model hydraulic copy lathe, and can manufacture all bollard shapes up to 270mm diameter and up to 1900mm in length. It can also produce all posts, columns and spindles to special order.

32

The Nordic hardwood bollards are a range of nine distinctly different profiles designed to suit a variety of situations and customer preference.

The formal cohesion and utility of the designs is to be further extended by the introduction of the Beachcomber Range where the surface of the hardwood is artificially weathered, introducing a romantic aesthetic dimension to the products by expressing the texture and rhythmic characteristics of the grain. All hardwood products are available untreated or with a protective coating which enhances the colour of the grain. The designs, Tromso and Turku can be supplied with coated 8mm mild steel capping plates to protect the end-grain and finished in a range of colours to contrast or tone with the hardwood. Tromso

These bollards are very versatile in design and can be adapted to form cycle parking units, post and rail fencing and barrier panels. Because of the method of manufacture, these designs can quite easily be produced in cast iron or concrete and in fact, the Stockholm and Tromso are already offered in concrete either as an exposed aggregate or plain finish.

Lighting Bollards Townscape lighting units complement our existing ranges of street furniture. They are functional as bollards, are decorative and efficient as light sources and have architectural appeal. The units are of modular construction giving easy access for electrical connections and for assembly or dismantling. Three designs are available in steel, the Boxlite, Cannonlite and Starlite and a further three designs in concrete, the Cape Town light, Minster light and Stele light. All of these designs provide low level lighting and are offered with four different light fittings - 50 watt MBF/U, 50 watt SON, 100 watt GLS and the Cannonlite and Stele light have bulk head fittings. The choice of light fittings must be specified when ordering. The units can be set in concrete or alternatively they can be fixed permanently into a special concrete base which is manufactured at Townscape. These products provide neat and simple solutions to increasing lighting levels in areas where security needs to be upgraded in either a public or private environment.

STANDARD COLOURS A standard range of 18 RAL colours is available as illustrated here, black and white are also offered as standard colours. Other RAL colours can be supplied subject to special quotation. It should be noted that all manmade or natural materials will lose some of their original qualities over a period of time due to the effects of exposure to the sun or ultra-violet rays (UV). The pigment and paint system researched and developed by Townscape are to the highest specification and will give exceptional retention of original colour for many years. The resins are UV stable and the pigments are UV fast. Typical results for intensive testing show the white paint to satisfy a 3 year Florida test with no creaming or chalking.

Materials And Finishing Steel All steel parts conform to BS4360 43A or 43C. During their finishing process, steel products will be shotblasted to SA 2.5/3.0 or acid cleaned prior to electro zinc plating. This process will provide an even deposit of zinc and zinc alloy over the whole surface of the material. The product is then chrome passivated and rinsed, this improves the surface finish and ensures maximum chemical adhesion of subsequent polyester finishes. Plating is applied to a minimum thickness of 15 microns. The sacrificial and sealing action of the zinc prevents any rust staining if severely damaged.

Cast Iron Cast iron products undergo two fettling and two shotblasting processes to remove all surface imperfections and surface contamination. A two pack epoxy grey primer is then applied with d.f.t. of 50/75 microns. This paint conforms to BS 5493 and BS4652 Type 3. It will withstand exterior exposure for three years and will not break down at 2000 hours salt spray testing.

Timber All timbers are machined from quality hardwood originating from carefully husbanded forests of Africa and Malaysia. The timber is exceptionally smooth grained, however, all hardwoods are susceptible to splits and shakes appearing over the course of time. All timber components are coated with high quality wood treatment before assembly and despatch. 44

Paint Thickness Testing

Packaging

Polyester Powder Coating Following their priming process, steel and cast iron products are polyester powder coated by electrostatic process which ensures complete coverage. The powder will give a d.f.t. of 75 microns. The polyester powder has been thoroughly tested under controlled conditions. Samples tested for resistance to salt spray, humidity and water soak at 40 degrees centigrade showed no breakdown and were resistant to most acids, alkalis and oils. Exterior exposure tests to BS 3900 Part 2 showed minimal loss of gloss and colour after 2000 hours. Similar results were obtained with a 12 month Florida exposure (45 degree angle). Shot-blasting

Concrete Cements used in manufacture are Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) or White |Portland Cement (Snowcrete) all of which comply with BS12;1991. Aggregates are naturally occurring materials, crushed or uncrushed, complying with the quality requirements of BS 882 : 1992 or alternatively coarse aggregates which comply with clause 5 of BS 1047 : 1983. All quarried materials vary from time to time in colour and texture, these variations however do not affect the technical soundness of the product. Colour of aggregates may also vary when in a wet or dry state. The batching of concrete is carried out in modern weighbatching machinery, computer controlled, with probes in all aggregates to ensure careful control of water content. The result is consistent batching to uniform specification. The accuracy of the products is ensured by the use of high quality master patterns and then moulds used in the casting operation. Each product is vibrocast and subsequently hand finished ensuring conformity of surface finish.

Maintenance All Townscape products require a minimum of maintenance and aftercare. A regular inspection to verify ground fixings and inspection of the finished coatings of both metal and timber components is essential. Damage to paintwork can be remedied by application of a suitable primer and topcoat with compatible products. It should also be noted that after outdoor exposure, all treated timbers can fade through the action of sunlight, rain and stain migration. To restore timber components to their original condition and maintain the level of wood preservation, a regular maintenance programme must be established.
