INTRODUCING ... THE FUTURE OF STREET FURNITURE It’s a question we’ve been asked more and more recently – how to retain the quality, strength and design range of street furniture whilst providing a product which lowers maintenance costs. The answer is Performa-Cast™, a range of Polymer street furniture including bollards, seating and cycle elements.
Performa-cast™ features an engineering grade polyurethane cast over a steel core. It offers all the aesthetic benefits of cast iron combined with the enhanced performance of steel but with greatly superior durability.
What are the benefits of Performa-Cast™? • Non ferrous, non rusting surface • No need for regular re-painting which saves £1000s on annual maintenance
Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what Kanti Varia of Leicester City Council said after recently purchasing Performa-Cast™ bollards from Townscape:
Townscape made an exact copy of the Leicester bollard weighing only 22Kg, a safe lift for one person. They are effectively maintenance free during an initial 10 year period, almost fit and forget. It is good to know the bollard is also available in a full ram raid specification.
• Stronger than cast iron equivalents • Lighter and easier to install • Lower residual value so less attractive to thieves

ARCHITECT’S Q&A
Always one to share his thoughts with anyone who’ll listen, Jonathan Goss has been talking to the press about the following topics over the past few months:
QUESTION I’ve been tasked with designing a public plaza in a city centre; I’m keen to create an urban design which will help lower anti-social behaviour in the area. How can street furniture help achieve this?
• The opportunities the Olympics is creating for British manufacturing in the Daily Telegraph
ANSWER It is possible to ‘design out crime’ and lots of research is taking place in new ways to do this. In our experience we’ve found that open spaces and public visibility can encourage responsible behaviour.

CONTACT
Use street furniture in a clever way, such as selecting low-level posts and railings designed and positioned to ensure good visibility.
Contemporary street furniture design with soft lines and heritage bollards and rails, complemented by soft landscaping will provide ‘symbolic barriers’ without closing off areas and reducing public visibility. If you have a question for Jonathan please email: jonathan.goss@ townscape-products.co.uk

TOWNSCAPE PROTECTING T I M E S BUILDINGS THROUGH DESIGN The growing terrorist threat across the globe means we need to think about how to protect our public buildings and spaces. We’ve developed the Townscape Counter Terrorist (CT) Block, designed to prevent vehicle incursion into a zone around a building or secure areas, such as pedestrian plazas, and yet lend itself to imaginative landscaping. Architects and contractors have found CT Blocks so effective they are now being deployed in a number of high profile public and private facilities across the country, such as major airports, transport hubs, heritage sites, MOD facilities, police stations and even the Tower of London.
BENEFITS OF CT BLOCKS • Manufactured from a unique reconstituted stone mix using specially selected aggregates. A range of colours, finishes and shapes available to suit your project • Tested to the PAS 68 standard and approved at the Transport Research Laboratory for the Centre for Protection of the National Infrastructure • Recessed into the surrounding tarmac, concrete or paved area to a depth of only 100mm – no costly disruption to underground services

THE LATEST GOSS... As if standing outside in all types of weather protecting people and property isn’t enough to cope with, the bollards of Great Britain are fighting another battle – to preserve a sense of local pride and identity. Jonathan Goss Managing Director
Welcome to the first edition of Townscape Times. We’ve launched this quarterly newsletter to give you upto-date news and industry insight for the street furniture and architectural landscaping sector. We’ve been manufacturing street furniture for nearly 40 years and appreciate the growing importance design plays when specifying landscaping and external works. Innovation is vital so we’re working with architects to develop new designs, new manufacturing methods and new materials to use in street furniture products. We’ve been working on some really exciting projects and it’s great to be able to offer architects, specifiers and contractors products which work hand in hand with their designs and visions. I hope you enjoy reading and if you have any comments or thoughts please get in touch. Email me at jonathan.goss@ townscape-products.co.uk

At last count, we discovered we stocked 38 types of bollards named after the UK towns and cities they serve. Some follow traditional and historic designs, others are brand new designs created on request for forward thinking architects and local authorities wanting to give a town a unique identity. From Blackpool to Bedford and Chester to Cheltenham, many towns and cities are expressing individuality through their bollards.

If you require bollards for your project, check with us to see if there’s an existing design for that particular town or city. If not, we’d be delighted to help you create a lasting legacy and produce a unique design for your town. Global brands may be taking over our high streets but at least we can take comfort they they’ll never take over our bollards. Email jess.fergusson@townscape-products.co.uk if you’re interested in creating a new town bollard design.
