WELCOME TO THE WILD
Hi my name is Pogo, and I am here to guide you through this activity book!
I have lots of colourful animal friends made out of many different soft materials and I am going to teach you all about them!
Now let’s go on a safari into the wild with Troy Emery, meeting new friends and learning about animals and art along the way!
The four symbols below will tell you what to do in each activity:

Look out for this symbol * and come back to this page to check the meaning of a word.
o Soft Sculpture: A type of sculpture made using cloth, foam, rubber, plastic, paper, fibres and similar materials that are supple and non-rigid.
o Decorate: To make something more attractive by adding extra items or images to it.
o Representation: The depiction of something or someone in a work of art.
o Pattern: A repeated design.
o Exaggerate: To make something larger than it really is.
o Object: A material item that can be seen and touched.
o Taxidermy: The art of preparing and mounting the skins of animals to appear real.
o Vibrant: Full of energy and life, bright and striking.
o Texture: The tactile feel and visual appearance of a surface.
o Surface: The outside layer of something.
o Primary colours: A colour that can be combined to make secondary colours.
o Secondary colour: A colour made by mixing two primary colours.
o Tertiary colour: A colour made by mixing a primary colour with a secondary colour, or by mixing two secondary colours.
o Complementary colour: Colours that are opposite to each other, and that when put together enhance the other.
o Fashion: A popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration or behaviour.
o Animal: Any living thing that is not a human being, that has senses, nerves, responds rapidly - and is also not a plant!
o Mythology: Ancient myths in general; the ancient myths of a particular culture or society.
o Agriculture: The science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool and other products.
o Creation stories: Symbolic takes of how the world began, and how people first came to be in it.
o Totem: A natural object or animal that is believed to have spiritual meaning, and is used as a symbol.

Troy Emery is a soft sculpture* _______________ who likes to create ‘fake taxidermy’* animals out of colourful materials and _______________. Troy uses many different materials including pom-poms to decorate* his animals and make them look interesting. His soft sculptures* _______________ the different ways we view animals, including as _______________ objects.
Using shape and _______________ , Troy Emery’s animals make us think about how we relate to real animals. By making them colourful and bright, we start to see them as _______________ _______________ and not as living creatures. This is exactly what Troy wants us to think about.
Some of the animals are in scary or aggressive poses, but their soft and vibrant* _______________ attract us to them. This is the same as in the wild - if you saw a tiger and its nice soft fur, you might be tempted to give it a cuddle, but we know this is usually a bad idea!

COLOUR TRAIL
There are lots of colours in the wild where I live. When all of the animals come together I can see the colours of the rainbow! The colour wheel separates colours into primary*, secondary* and tertiary* colours.

SECONDARY COLOURS
Using only secondary* colours, design the snake’s skin.
FEEL-GOOD COLOURS
It’s not easy matching colours together to make them look good! Look at Troy Emery’s drawing and colour pattern* in Black Hole II (below) and think about why it is so pleasing to look at. Consider the colour wheel and complementary colours*.
