PINNACLES GALLERY

ARTNOW is an exhibition of works by senior students from the North Queensland region; delivered as part of Gallery Services’ Creative Classrooms program. This annual exhibition is the result of ongoing collaboration between Gallery Services and Secondary Schools across the North. The exhibition is open to all students who are currently studying a creative arts subject in Year 11 or 12 across both Authority and NonAuthority subjects.

PINNACLES GALLERY

The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art recognises and promotes excellence in senior visual art education throughout state and non-state schools in Queensland. Over the years, the program has helped raise community awareness of the degree of sophistication in concepts, diversity of technical competence, and the high standard of visual art education in Queensland secondary schools.

EAST COAST ENCOUNTER

PINNACLES GALLERY

East Coast Encounter is a multi-arts initiative involving Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, writers and songwriters to reimagine the encounter by Lt James Cook and his crew with Aboriginal people in 1770. This project has been developed by the University of the Sunshine Coast and assisted by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and the Australian Government through the Ministry for the Arts ‘Visions of Australia program’.

DA VINCI MACHINES

PINNACLES GALLERY

This award-winning interactive exhibition invites everyone with curiosity to delve into the mind of artist, scientist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci and showcases many of his iconic inventions. On loan from the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy, the 60 interactive machines are created from original da Vinci drawings and highlights include the bicycle, the scuba suit, spring powered car, as well as flying machines.

Images of an Era presents a selection of works previously exhibited at Townsville’s Martin Gallery, a commercial gallery of national repute which closed its doors for the last time in 1988. The Martin Gallery preceded the establishment of Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and was the city’s first professional platform to show work from nationally renowned artists alongside artists from within the region, connecting the northern arts community to the rest of the nation.

METAMORPHOSIS: THE ART OF TOM MOORE

2016 Glencore Children’s Exhibition

Metamorphosis is the 2016 Glencore Children’s Exhibition, and focuses on the stunning hybrid life-forms of leading Australian glass artist, Tom Moore. Moore’s menagerie of characters combine botanical, zoological, and mechanical elements. Drawing inspiration from “the sharp observational wit of literary absurdists such as Edward Lear and…Dr Seuss” (Slade, 2016), the works are simultaneously humorous and insightful, giving us great joy, while also providing pause for thought about the human impact on the natural world.

Townsville is home to a strong contingent of young and emerging artists who will showcase their talent in the 2016 Townsville Young Artist Awards , which offers prize categories for participants aged from pre-school to 18 years. Each year, Gallery Services engages a leading Australian contemporary artist to undertake an intensive workshop for Townsville’s youth and emerging artists. The Annual Youth and Emerging Artist Exhibition features the works produced by the participants at these workshops.

Organised by the Townsville Art Society, this annual exhibition is the region’s most prestigious showcase for local artists, evidencing the diversity of practice within the region. Headlined by the major acquisitive Townsville Open Art Award, sponsored by Townsville City Council, the exhibition also includes a host of further prize categories celebrating acrylics, watercolours, oils, pastels, ink, pencil and charcoal drawings, printmaking, and miniatures.

SALT

SALT is a collection of landscape works from Murray Fredericks’ solo journeys to Lake Eyre between 2003 and 2010. The works present a unique view of the awe-inspiring location, which Fredericks’ captured in solitudinous stints of up to five weeks. The SALT series has been featured in multiple solo and group exhibitions, and collected in multiple international art collections.

FREE AND FOREIGN SUBJECTIVITY

Free and Foreign Subjectivity is the first major solo exhibition of Jordan Grant, and marks the artist’s return to Perc Tucker Regional Gallery after completing his studies through RMIT. In this exhibition, Grant “an assembly of paintings unified not by aesthetic homogeneity, but rather by a consistency of methodology.” The artist draws on varied sources for inspiration, including the text Painting Beside Itself by David Joselit, which proved a formative text in shaping the direction of his practice. Currently, the audience’s reception is what matters most to Grant; rather than asserting a singular definitive meaning in each work, he invites the viewer to bring their own experiences and views to formulate meaning.

The City of Townsville Art Collection is the city’s most prized cultural asset, comprised of more than 3,500 Artworks and Cultural Material Objects. The City of Townsville Art Collection offers compelling views, narratives and ideas of life in ‘the Tropics’, whilst revealing the individuals and forces which have shaped Townsville’s long and colourful history. Some of the rich treasures that the council holds for present and future generations are on display in council and other city buildings and are often displayed in the galleries collection exhibitions. Townsville City Council recognises that the incorporation of public art contributes to an attractive and stimulating built environment, and to the community’s appreciation and knowledge of the visual arts. Public artworks are also important as they have the ability to improve the quality of life and the environment, reinforce the unique identity of Townsville, and acknowledge the cultural diversity of contemporary Townsville, and the Indigenous and non-Indigenous heritage of the city. The City of Townsville Art In Public Spaces Collection is made up of over 200 works, with trails to follow in locations such as Riverway, The Strand, the CBD, and Jezzine Barracks.

STREET ART

Townsville City Council recognises Street Art as an important factor in creating a vibrant and lively city centre. Contributing to placemaking and urban living transformation, Street Art delivers considerable benefits for the city and its residents. Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is located in one of Townsville’s finest heritage buildings, on the corner of Denham and Flinders Streets, in the city centre. The Gallery has a ground floor and first floor level with seven exhibition spaces. On display are works by North Queensland artists as well as national and international touring exhibitions. Guided group exhibition tours are available upon request and prior bookings are essential.

PINNACLES GALLERY

RIVERWAY ARTS CENTRE

In 2006 Pinnacles Gallery moved to a purposebuilt facility within the Riverway Arts Centre – the only purpose-built gallery in Townsville. The space offers a multitude of ways to present artwork and has the capacity to deliver multi-media artwork presentations. Guided group exhibition tours are available upon request and prior bookings are essential.
