PERCIVALS

Since its debut in 2007, the Percivals Portrait Painting and Photography Prize has become one of Australia’s most prestigious art competitions.

Every two years, Townsville City Council Galleries receives hundreds of entries from artists and photographers all around Australia and the world. Their work not only showcases great skill and innovation, but also allows us to reflect on who we are as individuals and as a society.

This year we received more than 370 entries for the painting and photographic prizes, offering us snapshots from all walks of life. Every portrait tells a different story - whether it’s about the personal triumph of our everyday heroes, or a rare glimpse at what makes our idols tick.

I’m sure you will agree that the standard of entries this year is outstanding, and to have such a high calibre of artwork hanging in our galleries is a testament to the reputation of the Percivals. It’s especially encouraging to see such a strong contingent of local entries this year which is further proof of Townsville’s vibrant arts and culture community.

I’d like to take this opportunity to personally thank our judges for the painting prize, Dr Anne Sanders from the National Portrait Gallery; Noel Mason from TYTO Regional Art Gallery; and Anna Prifti from West End Art Space; and Cherie McNair from Australian Centre for Photography and independent artists and curator Judy Annear for judging the photographic prize.

I understand it’s been quite a challenge to decide who to award the $40,000 painting and $10,000 photographic prizes, considering the quality of entrants. But know that your time and expertise is genuinely appreciated.

Finally to all the artists, congratulations on your exceptional work and I look forward to taking some time to enjoy each and every one of the works in the exhibition.

PAINTING JUDGES

ANNE SANDERS

Dr Anne Sanders has worked as the curatorial researcher at NPG since 2010. She received her MA and PhD in art history from the Australian National University where she has previously given guest lectures and tutored in Australian art history.

Since 1990 she has worked in a number of national art organisations included Fine Arts Press (original publishers of Art and Australia and Art Asia Pacific), the Australia Council, Sherman Galleries and the National Museum of Australia. Dr Sanders writers regularly about artists and the art world for art journals and magazines as well as undertaking commissioned catalogue essays.

NOEL MASON

As an established and talented artist, a seasoned educator and an avid art collector Noel Mason brings a wealth of knowledge, skill and passion to his role as TYTO Regional Art Gallery Coordinator. With a Diploma of Visual Arts, a double major in Painting and Printmaking and a Post Graduate in Education, Noel has worked in an array of Government, Independent and private sectors heading Art Departments and schools in a Multicultural, International and Indigenous context.

During this time Noel continued to develop his artistic skills further, training as a painter and print maker and his current art work reflects the qualities of both mediums.

ANNA PRIFTI

Currently Director at WestEnd Art Space, Anna Prifti is a visual artist with a 25 year long career in restoration and preservation of mural paintings and byzantine iconography. She shares her knowledge with the community and not for profit organisations, in order to conserve the cultural heritage in public and private collections.

PHOTOGRAPHIC JUDGES

CHERIE MCNAIR

Cherie McNair, educated in Melbourne, holds an MA in Gallery and Museum Studies, together with a Post Grad Dip in Art History and Film Studies and a BA in Media Arts.

McNair has over fifteen years’ experience in the visual arts sector in Australia and internationally and has delivered major photography exhibitions with institutions and photographers throughout her career. Previous roles have included Head of Exhibitions and Creative Services at the Queensland Museum Network, Head of Exhibitions and Design, National Museums Scotland, Edinburgh, Project Manager, National and International Partnerships Tate, London, Director of Exhibitions Museum of Architecture (London Festival 2012), Curator/Exhibitions Manager Anthony d’Offay, London, and Project Manager, Contemporary Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Senior Exhibitions Coordinator National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

JUDY ANNEAR

Judy Annear was Senior curator photographs at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from late 1995 until mid 2016. In this role she instigated a program of collection-based projects as well as curating major national and international exhibitions. She established a collection program for the photography gallery which opened in 2011. Some of the artists included in that program were Jacky Redgate, Tracey Moffatt, Bettina Rheims.
