What is Strand Ephemera?
Strand Ephemera is a festival of ephemeral sculptures. This festival happens every two years on The Strand, in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.
What does 'ephemera' mean?
‘Ephemera’ refers to things that only last for a short time. When you look at the artwork on The Strand, think about the materials used.

Sea Turtle Hatchlings
Art In A Suitcase
There are 7 species of sea turtle in the world, 6 species are found in the Great Barrier Reef. We know that about 1 in 1000 turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood. Some threats facing turtles are forgotten fishing hooks, very fast boats, and rubbish left in and near the water. Write your pledge to help save the sea turtles below:

Art In A Suitcase
Art In A Suitcase is a program that brings art into Townsville primary schools every year. Last semester, local artists and students created turtle hatchlings. There are about 1000 turtle hatchlings in this artwork. Have a look for them on The Strand!
Here is a Flatback sea turtle hatchling. Did you know that Flatback sea turtles only nest on northern Australian beaches? Have you ever seen any sea turtles on The Strand?

The Language, the Wind and the Tides

People have been sailing around the Pacific Ocean for thousands of years! As people travel, they take their art and their language with them.
The artist has chosen to use coconuts in their artwork. Coconuts also travel through the Pacific, washing up in the tide. Can you draw your own pattern onto a coconut?

Patterns
Patterns are a way to communicate and they are used throughout the pacific in painting, carving, and tattooing. Patterns are often inspired by the natural world.
Look around you. Can you make a pattern based on what you can see?

Thongaphone
How does a thongaphone make sound?
When you slap a pipe, the air in it vibrates at a rate that matches the pipe’s ‘natural’ vibration rate. Long pipes have slow natural vibration rates, giving low sounds. In short pipes, the air vibrates more quickly and makes higher-pitched sounds. These pipes were cut to lengths that give the notes of a musical scale, like a piano. We hear a different sound from each pipe because hitting the pipes causes the air to vibrate and produce different sounds through different lengths of pipes.
