active hero ross johnston Runner and adventure sportsperson who loves the exhilaration of adventure racing, and completed a 50km and 100km Ultra Trail Run after taking up running at age 62. My wife Jenni triggered the start of my trail running and adventure racing to help overcome depression and improve fitness. In younger life I tried to emulate the major achievements of many people I looked up to. These days I take their philosophies and ethics as a basis for my approach to life. Maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle allows me to enjoy so many things. “Don’t die wondering, give it a go and don’t be scared to test your limits. If it doesn’t challenge you it won’t change you.”

active hero mitch norton Basketball star now with the Perth Wildcats, who was the youngest ever captain of the Townsville Crocodiles, and was recently part of the Aussie Gold Medal winning Commonwealth Games team. I first started playing after being asked to come along by a local coach who was a dad of one of my friends. My parents gave myself every opportunity growing up and taught my brother and I that being active was fun. Staying active is good for the mind and the body. It’s a good social thing to do as well. “Believe!!! Treat people the way you want to be treated.” Being active doesn’t have to cost money. Get outside and have a look around, start small and go for a walk.

active hero nash lowis Javelin thrower from Charters Towers who threw a personal best to win Gold at the 2018 IAAF World Under 20 Champion in Finland. I first started throwing the javelin in year 10 and came 5th at the State Champs. I soon had coach Leslye Muller assisting me and in grade 12 I won the Australian All Schools Championships. I have looked up to all of the adults in my life, but haven’t had any athletic or famous role models. People with any level of fitness can benefit from being active. It makes me feel healthier, physically and mentally. After a while, exercise becomes a habit and part of your normal day. “Setting goals are great. If you fall short of your goals, you reassess and try again.”

I first started after I saw another kid skating down the street and thought it looked cool. I never had one key role model, I look up to a number of skaters now and growing up. I enjoy being active and skating because it’s fun. I don’t really see it as exercise.

active hero kyle feldt Townsville born North Queensland Toyota Cowboy who debuted in the NRL in 2013, two year’s prior to the teams 2015 Premiership winning side. I was first introduced to rugby league by my mother. She ensured I went along to a come and try day at our local club and I fell in love with the game. As an avid fan of motocross, my role model growing up was Australian racer Chad Reed. Being active is really important to me. Not only does it keep me fit and healthy, but it helps clear my mind. “Nothing is free. You must work hard.”

I first got involved in sailing because it was something my dad enjoys. I got to see my cousins sailing, and liked what I saw. I always received many words of encouragement and inspiration from local sailing identity John Burns since getting involved in the sport. I currently look up to Olympic sailor Ashley Stodard. Being active is Fun! It gives me an escape from daily stresses. “Always give it a go, you never know.

I first started playing at 5. My mother and grandmother were going to the courts at Pimlico State High School and they brought me along. I have recently been inspired by Evonne GoolagongCawley. She followed her dream to play professional tennis and inspire indigenous kids to be active. I like being active because it keeps me both physically and mentally healthy and has led to meeting some really amazing people. “Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. active hero linda davis Outdoor adventurist who has represented Australia at World Championships and International events in outrigging, white water rafting, adventure racing and rogaining. As a youngster my parents encouraged and supported me in trying many different sports. Through friends, I ended up trying a range of activities. I am inspired by every amateur athlete that has done it hard, achieved the seemingly impossible, fought through injury and illness, trained around work and family commitments, paid their own way, and fronted up and finished the race or event. I like being active because of the friendships, the memories, being outdoors and the challenges. “Never knock back an opportunity, that door may not open again!

active hero cara koenen After growing up on Magnetic Island, Cara is now playing in the Suncorp Super Netball, and won both the 2017 and 2018 Championships with the Sunshine Coast Lightning. My mum got me involved in netball. She was the coach of the first team I played in on Magnetic Island. My biggest role models were my siblings. They definitely pushed me to work as hard as I could in sport, school, and life. Not only does maintaining an active lifestyle have many health benefits, but it also provides a unique opportunity to meet new people and make friends. “Take care of your body. You have to live in it for your whole life

active hero delma gisu Local AFL product who was recently drafted to the GWS Giants for the 2019 AFLW Season. At my first game of AFL, I was at Shalom Christian College, and was asked to fill in after some of the other girls couldn’t play. I ended up being selected into the Indigenous Kickstart Program following this and my career progressed from there. I love watching Eddie Betts and Cyril Rioli. I love the freedom from being active and the ability it gives me to express myself. My favourite quote – Chris Connolly: “We focussed on celebrating the goals to get the crowd into the game. I draw the line at somebody climbing the goal post.”
