2019 Seasons Greetings from the Mayor I wish all Townsville residents a very Merry Christmas and send my best wishes for 2020. I hope you will have the opportunity to join with family and friends over the festive season. This is a time to relax, reflect on the year that has been and look ahead to what may come. Despite a pretty tough start to 2019, this year Townsville celebrated a string of great achievements. We united as a community to recover from the worst disaster in our city’s history. Council has delivered a number of major job-creating infrastructure projects with Townsville’s new 1.8m Water Pipeline well underway, an incredible response to Council’s Water Smart Package with over 22,000 properties registered and much of Council’s 2020 vision becoming a reality.

There’s nothing like the festive season to bring everybody together, don’t forget Council has a calendar of events for things to see and do around Townsville while celebrating Christmas and the New Year. While Christmas should be joyful for all, it’s important to remember that for some it can be a particularly lonely and difficult time. I ask you to help spread the festive cheer and support the annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal and remember all donations go to charities supporting families in need. Stay safe on the roads this festive season and be prepared for whatever the weather may bring. Keep yourself up to date with disaster readiness and make sure you check out Townsville City Council’s Emergency Management Dashboard. From all of the Councillors and staff, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

Jenny Hill

The return of the big top tent at Carols by Candlelight will see a number of amazing local performers, including our wonderful 1RAR band in full force and a headlining performance from none other than ARIA Award winner Justine Clarke.

Now hear the angels sing A new King born today And man will live for evermore Because of Christmas Day Now Joseph and his wife Mary Came to Bethlehem that night They found no place to bear her Child, Not a single room was in sight By and by they found a little nook In a stable all forlorn And in a manger cold and dark Mary’s little Boy was born Trumpets sound and angels sing, Listen to what they say That man will live forevermore Because of Christmas Day Man will live forevermore Because of Christmas Day

We Need a Little Christmas

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Haul out the holly Put up the tree before my spirit falls again Fill up the stocking, I may be rushing things, but deck the halls again now

You better watch out, you better not cry, Better not pout, I’m tellin’ you why Santa Claus is comin’ to town

Sandra Neal

For we need a little Christmas Right this very minute, Candles in the window, Carols at the spinet Yes, we need a little Christmas Right this very minute It hasn’t snowed a single flurry, But Santa, dear, we’re in a hurry Climb down the chimney Turn on the brightest string of lights I’ve ever seen Slice up the fruitcake It’s time we hung some tinsel on that evergreen bough

Justine Clarke

He’s makin’ a list and checkin’ it twice, Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice Santa Claus is comin’ to town He sees you when you’re sleeping, He knows when you’re a-wake He knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake Oh! You better watch out, you better not cry, You better not pout, I’m telling you why Santa Claus is comin’ to town He sees you when you’re sleeping He knows when you’re awake He knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness… Oh, no, no

For I’ve grown a little leaner, Grown a little colder, Grown a little sadder, Grown a little older, And I need a little angel Sitting on my shoulder, Need a little Christmas now

You better watch out, you better not cry Better not pout, I’m tellin’ you why Santa Claus is comin’ to town

Instrumental

Santa Claus is coming… to town

He’s makin’ a list, and checkin’ it twice, Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice Santa Claus is comin’ to town

We need a little music, Need a little laughter, Need a little singing Ringing through the rafter, And we need a little snappy Happy ever after, Need a little Christmas now

O Holy Night

Emma Higgins, Lara Vickers, Caitlyn Goodes

O Holy Night The stars are brightly shining It is the night of our dear Saviour’s birth Long lay the world in sin and error pining ‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Fall on your knees, o hear the angels’ voices O night divine, o night when Christ was born O night divine, o night divine, O night divine

Come they told me pa rum pum pum pum A new born King to see pa rum pum pum pum Our finest gifts we bring pa rum pum pum pum To lay before the King pa rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum So to honour Him pa rum pum pum pum When we come

Truly He taught us to love one another His law is love and His Gospel is peace Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother And in His Name all oppression shall cease Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy Name Christ is the Lord, let ever ever praise we Noel, Noel, oh night when Christ was born Noel, Noel, o night, o holy night

December

If it Doesn’t Snow on Christmas

Do you remember the 24th night of December Decorations were hanging in splendour A shining Christmas display

Santa works all day in his workshop Making lots of games and toys Then one day, he hops in his sleigh To bring them to the girls and boys Santa’s just as nice as he can be There’s just one little thing that worries me

Musician Stephen Bumford (1RAR Band)

Our laughter bringing Forth the joy that our souls were singing As we danced in the night, Remember how our love stole the night away Hey hey hey Ba de ya, say do you remember Ba de ya, loving in December Ba de ya, sharing love on Christmas Day Ba duda, ba duda, ba duda, badu Ba duda, badu, ba duda, badu Ba duda, badu, ba duda My thoughts are with you Holding hands with your heart to see you Now there is three to love, Remember how we knew love was here to stay Now September shares the love that we found in December Now we have three to love, Remember the true love we shared that day? [Chorus] x 2 Those bells were ringing Our love was singing Do you remember loving on Christmas Day? [Chorus] x 2 [Ba de ya, de ya, de ya Ba de ya, de ya, de ya Ba de ya, de ya, de ya, de ya] x 2

Justine Clarke

If it doesn’t snow on Christmas How is Santa goin’ to use his sleigh In case of rain, will there be a train That’ll speed him on his way If it doesn’t snow on Christmas How will Santa get around to us If he breaks down on his way to town Will they let him use a bus? I sent him a nice long letter And I hope it’s not in vain I’d really feel much better If I knew he could fly a plane People say he has eight reindeer For the sleigh he’s driving here But how’ll he go, if it doesn’t snow On Christmas this year If it doesn’t snow on Christmas How is Santa goin’ to use his sleigh In case of rain, will there be a train That’ll speed him on his way If it doesn’t snow on Christmas How will Santa get around to us If he breaks down on his way to town Will they let him use a bus? I sent him a nice long letter And I hope it’s not in vain I’d really feel much better If I knew he could fly a plane People say he has eight reindeer For the sleigh he’s driving here But how’ll he go, if it doesn’t snow On Christmas this year

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree Justine Clarke

Rockin’ around the Christmas tree At the Christmas party hop Mistletoe hung where you can see Every couple tries to stop Rockin’ around the Christmas tree Let the Christmas spirit ring Later we’ll have some pumpkin pie And we’ll do some caroling You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear Voices singing, let’s be jolly Deck the halls with boughs of holly Rockin’ around the Christmas tree Have a happy holiday Everyone dancin’ merrily In the new old-fashioned way You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear Voices singing, let’s be jolly Deck the halls with boughs of holly Rockin’ around the Christmas tree Have a happy holiday Everyone dancin’ merrily In the new old-fashioned way
